"Mind the Gap" - Be Mindful of the Burnout!
Tumblr media
Millions around the globe transitioned to remote work during the pandemic and are expected to continue for a long time. However, after a while, the newness of the change starts to wear off, and that’s when burnout creeps in.
Check out my earlier post - COVID 2.0 Marathon – Stay Productive with 9 @WFH Tips While initial focus of work from home (WFH) was all about being productive and efficient but the focus has shifted on how to prevent one from burning out as this pandemic is incessant beyond average human comfort zone.
According to a recent Monster survey, pandemic induced WFH burnout is real as more than 50% of respondents said they are experiencing burnout. Another survey by a US-based anonymous professional network with 3.2 million verified users, stated that 53% of respondents across multiple organizations including Google, Facebook, Amazon, Apple, LinkedIn, and Walmart were feeling burnout and facing loneliness during WFH.
The lines between work space and home are blurring. Because the shift to remote working came about so suddenly, employees are forced into this situation without adequate preparation, much less of a choice. Many of us are "panic working" through pandemic doubled by economy doldrums, and it is taking a toll on everyone's health fabric.
With remote working and other personal tasks now often happening from the same room at the same time, many workers are stuck in an unending loop, often drifting between reality and their daily life. WHO has categorized burnout as an occupational phenomenon and considers these as the major symptoms:
Exhaustion and lack of energy, in general
Increased mental distance from a job, feelings of negativity and cynicism relating to one’s job
Reduced work efficiency
For those are experiencing burnout, necessary intervention need to be made to facilitate -   what’s the best way to possible to reverse what they are going through, maintain good health and get the most out of working remotely to get them back on track holistically.
Mindful steps to prevent WFH Burnout:
Structure your day
When your office is also the place you sleep, eat, and spend your free time, it’s difficult to keep track of the time and end up working less than your average work day — or even more. According to a survey, when working remotely 36% of employee’s structure their day to resemble normal office working hours. Structuring your remote work hours to resemble in-office hours can help you stay productive both as an individual and also as part of a team. Also, having a regular routine similar to one in an office helps in maintain a work-life balance.
Take a Planned time off
If you feel burnt out, take a time off and don’t feel bad about it. Know that you have earned it and plan it in such a way that it helps you to recover. Whether you decide to travel or just enjoy at home, make sure that you completely unplug. Turn off all notifications and make a rule to not talk or think about work at all. After a few days, you’ll feel recharged and ready for action.
Pick up a new hobby
At times work is challenging and you need to find a healthy way to take your mind off. Intense work needs to be balanced with intense play. Join a sports, learn an art, go on a hike or just strengthen yourself with workout and exercise or hiking. It would be beneficial if you choose a group activity, since it can help you combat remote work isolation.
Communicate with your team
Hiding your concerns will only make them worse. If you’re feeling burned out, tell your manager and colleagues as early as possible. They can collaborate with you to redistribute your workload, motivate and encourage you. Who knows, some of your teammates may be feeling the same way, so you will be doing a favor for more people than just yourself. While we can’t meet our co-workers face-to-face that shouldn’t stop us communicating with them using technology platforms like Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Google Meets, Skype, etc.
Be Aware of your Limitations
You don’t have to beat yourself for not being always available to your manager. Instead, practice self-care, decompress – mentally and physically. In between your work, stretch a little or take short breaks which help you recover. Resist the urge to be ‘always there’ as you don’t have to. Everybody is giving their best shot, and so are you.
As we all are experiencing, this pandemic is not a sprint but is turning out to be a marathon and it is key to stay healthy, motivated and be safe. Read my other post- Sprint done, now get ready for Marathon COVID 2.0
Conclusion:
WFH burnout is real and here to stay if not addressed head on by both enterprises and individuals. While above are a few recommendations that may help you avoid burnout while WFH, I am sure we can expand this list to suit the respective individual/groups. It takes a little mindful effort to shake up your routine, inject energy into your working life and stay clear of  WFH burnout. Pick the technique that interests you the most and give it a shot, there are no right answers here. Who knows, you might get used to it and never want to go to the office again! And most importantly, do exercise regularly, eat right and sleep well - for a healthy mind leads a healthy body. Finally it is essential to Mind the Gap in the Mind!!

UBI, On-demand insurance is gaining momentum!
Tumblr media
The pay-as-you-go and metering concepts are nothing new. We have seen it in our age old utilities usage and of course in the recent pervasive cloud computing in all layers as X-aaS. But when you apply this to insurance you get interesting breakthrough business model!
Usage-based insurance (UBI), also known as to as pay-how-you-drive or pay-as-you-drive or pay-as-you-go, is a type of auto insurance which allows insurance companies to set the premium based on how safe your driving habits are. UBI is supported by telematics technology which is either pre-installed in the car or by using plug-in device or through mobile applications which provides insurers a range of data like how drivers are braking and accelerating, what is their average speeds, where they are driving, and for how long they’re behind the wheel. The data collected helps insurance companies to closely monitor and assess the risk profile of the driver and to reward safer drivers with discounts on their insurance.
It is key to note while the idea may be a couple of decades old, the recent advancements in technology is making this possible to bring this to the market. Also insurance companies is able to forgo attaching separate telematics device and only require a mobile application to provide for UBI, which is a big booster due to smartphone adoption! By using GPS and other location-tracking features, the app will record and monitor the driving habits without the need to plug anything into your car.
Interesting Facts:
According to Statista, the global vehicle telematics market has almost doubled between 2015 and 2019, and is estimated to be worth USD 103 billion by 2022
IHS Automotive predicts that by 2023, 142 million people worldwide will be subscribed to usage-based auto insurance, in comparison to the estimated 12 million that use it 2019
According to a recent study, usage-based insurance market is estimated to grow over a staggering USD 200 billion by 2026.
A recent study by Ptolemus, shows that of the 20 million out of 875 million automotive insurance policies in existence are usage-based insurance and 20% of these insurance are leveraging mobile devices.
Finally – UBI often works out to be around 20-30% cheaper than traditional auto insurance – and it no surprise the adoption is on the rise in the real world!
Types of usage-based insurance policies:
In UBI model, the premium is calculated based on the actual usage of one’s car driving pattern. The theory behind it is that if car is not driven, the chance of getting involved in an accident is also less. Broadly there are 2 types of usage-based insurance policies:
Pay-per-mile or pay-as-you-drive: Here the premium rates are based solely on the distance you drive during the policy period. If you don’t drive often, the rates will be lower.
Pay-how-you-drive or behavior-based: Here the premium rates are based on how safe of a driver you are. If driven safely, the rates will be lower than if driven at a high-risk.
Brief summary of UBI programs offered by major insurance companies:
Today, UBI model is gaining traction worldwide with many Insurance companies giving their customers the required control over their auto insurance, where they can earn discounts on their premiums based on their safe driving habits. Not to be left behind, car manufacturers are also wiring into this ecosystem by partnering with insurers and analytics companies to provide UBI solutions.
Nationwide SmartRide: This app measures distance driven, hard braking, acceleration, idle time and night-time driving.
QBE Insurance Box: This app uses telematics to generate a driver score. The safer an individual drives, the higher their score and the lower their premium.
Allstate Drivewise: This app tracks the speed, braking and the time of day you drive to determine the cash back. Drivers get discounts for keeping speed below 80 mph, limiting late night trips, and limiting hard braking.
Travelers IntelliDrive: This is a 90-day program that uses a mobile app to track the driving habits. If you drive safely, you could potentially receive a 20% discount, however if you have riskier driving habits this program could actually result in a higher premium.
CAA MyPace: This app relies on a telematics device to track the distance driven and then charges drivers per 1,000-kilometre increment.
Insurethebox: This app uses unique insights to reach out to consumers who frequently speed in its proactive anti-speeding communications program.
State Farm Drive Safe & Save: This app measures driver behaviors like acceleration, braking, cornering, speed and distracted driving. Safe drivers can earn up to 30% in savings.
Conclusion:
To summarize, Usage-based insurance benefits both customer and the insurance company, since it acts as an incentive to adopt safer driving practices. Also, in general, people who drive less and have safe driving habits tend to get into fewer accidents, resulting in fewer claims. The goal of usage-based coverage is to reward you for your good driving behavior with a reduced rate!

Harnessing Data Lakes with Insights-as-a-Service!
Tumblr media
Almost every company today is a big-data company and has plenty of available data but the putting it to use to extract useful information is an ordeal due to lack of robust infrastructure and IT resources needed to derive valuable insights from the huge volume of data. While Data Lakes and Strategies around are being put in place it takes lots of resources to derive meaningful decisions in a timely manner!
The answer lies in allowing the data lakes to flourish, yet not to move them around through complex ETL, etc to distill them for decisions. This is where Insights-as-a-Service comes to rescue where a third party service provider will help you in deriving meaningful insights by using uses predictive analytics and business intelligence by hooking on to this data lakes.
Insights-as-a-Service platforms address the need for in-depth analytics and provide solutions to unique data-specific challenges. Also, it allows companies to reduce their costs significantly by removing the need for data scientists and complex infrastructure required to run analytics on premise. With so much benefits, the Insights-as-a-Service market is predicted to grow beyond $3.3 billion by 2021.
Monetizing Data
Insights-as-a-Service not only helps in deriving information from your own data, but it’s also about identifying other data sources which may help in answering specific business questions. As has been the case with many companies, it may look like they have lots of data, with close observation we will find that the information is duplicated, missing critical information or irrelevant to the business question. And this is where data itself is becoming the product.
An insights-as-a-service company helps in sourcing relevant data that can help in solving the business problem. For example, a company that has already aggregated data on automotive buying trends can share it with us and we can then collate to get a complete picture.
Insights-as-a-Service gaining traction thanks to the cloud model:
Forrester defines Insights-as-a-Service as “an integrated set of data management, analytics, and insight application development and management components, offered as a platform the enterprise does not own or control.”
Till recent times many of the companies were reluctant to share their own datasets and analytics. However, with the wide spread adoption of the cloud model, companies are now accustomed to the subscription based model and are more than willing to purchasing data, analytics and insights as and when required.
For companies operating on a smaller budget, Insights-as-a-Service cloud platform offers a secure, scalable approach. Insights-as-a-Service solutions are constantly evolving to address company specific data problems, helping them discover what data is relevant, what external data to purchase, and how any of this data can be meaningful.
Components of Insights-as-a-Service solution:
Vertical Domain Knowledge
For business process automation in the case of certain industries, having domain-specific knowledge is much needed.
Business Process Discovery
The Insights-as-Service solutions needs a detailed description of the business processes that are automated by SaaS applications. For example, detailed descriptions of the business processes related to planning, corporate financial budgeting and account consolidation processes, customer acquisition and retention.
Insights Generator
The insights generator includes one or more analytical models such as clustering, prediction, deviation detection and optimization, etc which are incorporated within the platform and the insights are then generated.
Action Generator
The action generator generates a set of actions that the organization needs to implement in order to achieve its goals. The action steps are derived from the insights generated from the components described earlier.
Decision Dashboards
Usually, the insights and actions provided are meant for business users who do not usually have any expertise in understanding complex data or codes. So Insights-as-a-Service platforms offer a user interface that makes it easy to understand the insights. For example, the platform can recommend that 25% of the marketing budget be allocated to reduce customer churn and increase customer acquisition.
Conclusion
In today age if DATA is King, then Insights-as-a-Service is the Chief Adviser, helping to take informed business decisions based on data-driven points of knowledge, predictions analytics and insights. In addition if you add the elements of AI, then suddenly you have a winning team! Also Insights-as-a-Service, organizations only need to hire cloud-based services on a subscription model, whenever needed, and acquire insights and actions. There is no need to set up costly infrastructure and hire experts to do the analysis. This way, organizations simply provide the data, and that data is analyzed so that proper actions can be recommended. In the end the elusive enterprise Himalayan Data Mountain is finally negotiated with ease by Insights-as-a-service thus allowing one to focus on the real business!!
Note => Pl follow me my next post on the “Dark Data” – coming soon, to understand why Insights-as-a-Service will be key and will play major role in the near future!

Business Antidote during Covid – adopt RPA!
Tumblr media
It has been 6 months since the outbreak of COVID-19 which has created havoc across the world, like bull in a china shop (no pun intended),  infecting more than 20 million people with a death toll of 0.7 million as of August, 2020. The economy of many countries is on the verge of collapse. Globally, we have moved from high level of social interaction to social distancing. Even though we are physically apart, the work continues to come in and needs to be completed.
However, compared to any of the previous outbreaks or crisis, the world is better prepared to address this global pandemic. There is technology readily available that can be leveraged to help organizations minimize losses and reduce the spread of COVID-19. Robotic Process Automation (RPA) is one such technology which the organizations around the world are implementing to become faster and more agile. The major advantages of RPA during COVID-19 situation are the minimal implementation time (about 3 weeks), RPA requires no integration or anything as it is a layer on top of your existing framework or application and frees up the employees from mundane repetitive tasks.
Forrester predicts the RPA industry is growing at lightning pace and will reach $2.9 billion by 2021 globally. According to Gartner, RPA software spending will reach $2.4 billion by 2022 globally.  Industries like BFSI, Healthcare, Travel & Tourism, Utilities and Telecommunication companies, etc have embraced and seem to be be the biggest adopters of RPA. On the technology vendor front some of the most popular RPA Tools are Blue Prism, UiPath, Automation Anywhere, Pega, Microsoft Power Automate, etc
Automation to the Rescue across Industries
Due to the this extended pandemic which is not showing any signs of slowing down the  companies around the world are facing extreme challenges – from backlogs, increased demands and business continuity challenges, etc. RPA is offering relief to overwhelmed organizations by automating processes such as:
Banking industry have been using RPA for efficiency in work, accuracy in data handling, and for the data security
Deploying robots to handle the surge in mortgage hold and postponing loan repayments requests
Insurance companies implemented RPA for managing the work processes, entering customer’s data, and for other applications.
RPA helped Retail industries in updating orders, sending notifications, shipping products, tracking shipments, etc
Accelerate COVID-19 testing and reporting with the help of attended RPA.
Companies manufacturing Hand Sanitizers, Masks, PPE kits faced influx of orders during the pandemic. With some of the team not available to work due to quarantines unattended robots helped to handle the volume and meet a growing market need
Aid airlines companies contact centers in handling cancellation requests effectively.
Monitor the health status of an organization’s workforce that is widely distributed using a health screening bot
Real world impact by RPA during COVID-19 Crisis
A major insurance company in Europe is using multiple robots to support massive surge in Service Now transactions, Remote Access Services (RAS), and Enterprise Mobility Services. Business continuity is now a reality as their teams can serve their customers remotely.
One of the top Hospital in Dublin is using RPA tools to process COVID-19 testing kits in a fraction of the time and receives the results in near real time. This has significantly reduced the burden on its Infection Prevention and Control Department saving almost 3 hrs per day.
In one of the largest hospitals in the US, medical staff were spending hours on administrative work to properly add the new patient, record the patient data, and report it to the CDC. However, with the deployment of RPA, the hospital backlogs have been reduced, 8-9 minutes per patient are saved, and costly manual errors have been eliminated.
Conclusion
Automation is not a new concept. With almost all major verticals leveraging its benefits, automation technologies such as RPA has become a preferred choice among the organizations. The reason why RPA is receiving a lot of attention lately is due to the fact that it is highly versatile and can be used in virtually every industry to reduce dependencies, streamline the processes and reduce cost.
While enterprises adjusting to these “new normal“,  at least the time bound, repeatable and rules-based tasks shouldn’t become a barrier for the company’s future. The answer lies in adopting the proven RPA technologies!
