The awe-inspiring beauty of the Brockville Railway Tunnel, showcasing a stunning formation of stalactites and stalagmites. These natural sculptures are formed over thousands of years as water drips from the ceiling of the cave, depositing minerals that gradually accumulate. The stalactites hang from the ceiling like icicles, while stalagmites rise from the floor, both glowing under the warm illumination. The tunnel, which is Canada's first railway tunnel, was completed in 1860 and is a testament to the country's rich history of railway construction.

June 24: Brockville Tunnel: Canadian first railway tunnel.
The Brockville train tunnel was Canada’s first railway built in 1854 to 1860 and allowed both the Brockville and Ottawa railways to travel under the city to reach the industrial sites.  The tunnel was finally closed in 1970 after a rocky history. The length of the tunnel is about 1721 feet but only 80 feet have been redone for public use as a walking path. The goal one day is to reopen the whole length and in 2017 the first part was open for 150th celebrations.
The city has done a great job with the tunnel. The tunnel is lined with LED lights set to change colours to music. My favorite part is that every so often they will have a block of red come rushing through the tunnel set to train noises and it totally made me jump the first time. The place feels like magic and walking through it just filled me with wonder.  The tunnel is free and doesn’t take long to walk through and would be a great stop to strength your legs on a road trip.
