I can even believe that Armin is living alone now, the only thing I can't believe is that Alexy doesn't have a key from Armin's apartment and doesn't pop around casually with food or without food in the most random and inconvenient moments, doesn't matter if Armin attempt to change the lock, Alexy will always find a way.

Saturday night would be boys night with Kentin, Nathaniel and some of Armin's new friends to play D&D or movie night with a lot A LOT junk food, Armin says that girls are not allowed but somehow Candy shows up sometimes and spend some time with the boys too, nobody dares to kick her out.

It's pretty rare to see him around the campus, not gonna lie, but when Candy came back to town, he does shows up more, maybe even enrolled in some of the classes she's in just so they get to spend time together. When Alexy and Rosa pointed that out, Armin blushed hard and denied, which sounded like an admission.

While studying Armin is doing freelancer stuff and streaming on the side, he has an small community around 1.000/3.000 active members on twitch which he streams his favorite games, every friday night is spooky games time, and every monday is just chatting days if there's no new updates on games he keep up with. His presence on youtube is small, mostly highlights from his stream. However he does more money being a freelancer.

Because of the streaming and youtube stuff he gets around to make contacts and ends up working in small indie games from time to time, which is something he always gets excited about and gives him a boost of energy. By the end of each new project he's spend and begging for some change of pace.

Candy often spends the night on his place after they got back together and he always make time for her somehow, specially on weekends, Saturday is always her day for him and most times Sunday is also spend together - sometimes they get so engrossed on one another that monday morning classes get completely skipped.

Be a streamer made Armin be more open and strive on his easy going chatty side, also made him more open and mindful of people's different perspectives. His group of friends are just another new side of him also, shows that his charming personality work just as well on others as it does with Candy - and finding balance on his life is something Armin will struggle with but also learn that he can ask other's for help.

Unplugging dates on the weekends happen regularly, in which they get to go hiking/biking to some distant beach, moutain, natural park. If they don't go to those, they go do something else like driving to another city to have dinner in a new place, or go watch a performace in a pub or something else that Candy picks - HOWEVER Armin will learn how to appreciate it more because always streaming, studying and working as a freelance does make him stressed and getting to turn everything off and just do something new with her became valuable to him.

Armin calls Rayan the "pretencious sussy teacher" because "HE'S TOO HANDSOME AND NICE, I CAN'T TRUST", but after they have a conversation about video game being a new and more revolutionary type of art, they became buddies and now Rayan also plays LOL - which was a L for Rayan.

yeah a lot of people call the classics Snobby and everyone with a lit degree has taken that as a personal offense and decried it as anti-intellectualism and blah blah blah instead of actually like addressing why people might say that

but to anyone who cares im pretty sure people say that shit as a defense mechanism

The Classics as a whole can be intimidating, especially if you already struggle with reading/writing or didnt have a good education on the subject

theres decades if not centuries of people talking about these works and interpreting and argueing about them and on top of that theyre Great Works that Everyone Should Read and Everyone knows about. theres also, whether you like it or not, a nice sheen of Only Smart/Highly Educated People Can Truely Appreciate This on top

so when someone approaches one of these works for the first time it already feels like coming in late to the party

but on top of that the writing styles can be dense, the books/poems/plays lengthy. theres usually a lot of historical context thats needed to fully appreciate the story being told. and thats before you get into whatever literary/mythological illusions thatll almost certainly be inside the story itself

then they take a crack at it and its slow and confusing and boring and really time consuming but everyone else is talking about how amazing it is and what a Classic it is but because of all the reasons listed above this new reader Just Doesnt Get It and well

that makes em feel fucking stupid. they feel like an idiot

so they brush it off as pretencious and snobby because otherwise theyre just too stupid to get it

or alternatively, they push through the whole thing, dont get what the fuss is about, and assume everyone praising it is so far up their own ass theyre now a circle

the same can also be said for things like movies, art, and music

im not saying that the brushing off of The Classics or more involved books/art/movies etc is GOOD

but i think brushing it off as anti-intellectualism is just attempting to ignore the actual problem

The poor implementation of politics in RWBY - Vagueness

Previously i have made a thread about why i think that political messages in RWBY fail, at least in regards to what i thought the problem with the writers themselves was.

While it is important to analyze WHY something might have gone wrong, one also has to not forget to analyze HOW it all went wrong. Were the tools for messaging the wrong tools to use in that moment? Were they used correctly? Were there some extra circumstances that changed the messaging?

To prevent my long-winded threads i will try to focus more on and will make separate threads for specific ways that politics are poorly implemented/explored in canon.

The topic of today is vagueness.

Vague Gestures to Symbolism

There is time for being subtle, there is time for being clever, and there is time to be open with your messaging. While being vague allows a writer more options and abilities for the future, there is also a point at which it becomes detrimental.

Volumes 7 and 8 are an example of that. Especially from the very start. The show vaguely gestures towards authoritarianism and workers-rights through symbolism. The first time we arrive in Mantle we are shown big screens with Ironwood and Weiss in them (The military) talking about keeping order, we are shown people not liking the military presence well by kids vandalizing military tech , we are shown tired workers coming back tired from what can only be assume as work in the mines.

The problem with all of these is that Symbols on their own do not create sufficient meaning or messaging. Symbolism has to feed into something more substancial if used in creative works. A good example of how it can be used badly is something like different Superman adaptations when he is given "Jesus" or "Angel" like symbolism. Since it usually never feeds into anything more it just comes off as pretencious and meaningless.

Great works, movies like 1984 specifically use symbolism to enhance the message that is already being told. All pieces of symbolism feed into one another and form larger pieces of information. The big brother screens are not the only thing showing governmental oversight.

Yet it seems that RWBY as a work thinks that it can do so.

Lack of Substance

The symbolism of RWBY is not inherently bad, some of it is acceptable. It falls apart because the show fails to have substance in the issues it is trying to explore. For example, lets say we want to explore Ironwood and authoritarianism. Okay, let us do that. Lets start with the government.

Ironwood holds 2 seats out of...... How many? Ironwoods responsibilities are...... What exactly? I could create dozens if not more of these comments but i think you can get the point. We cant analyze or explore Authoritarianism in regards to Ironwood, since we know barely ANYTHING about how the government of Atlas is structured in the first place. Some things we can assume with some level of certainty, but others we simply cannot.

Even the Star Wars prequels against all odds manage to make a more coherent message about authoritarianism. An elected leader assuming total control of a state after given emergency control due to a perceived crysis? It mirrors real life and as such can carry a message even with little details.

RWBY does not even have that.

Okay, lets tackle workers rights then. Jacques Schnee from the very start has been set-up as an ultra-capitalist stereotype, there have been hunts thrown around that SDC is not exactly working with clean hands. Now we get to go to Atlas itself, the home of SDC and there is some imagery shown that implicates workers to be unhappy.

And then all we are shown are tired workers after a hard work day and some vague eqipment in a mine? Really? That is all?

As an example i would like to bring up a game i am playing currently called "Sunless sky". In this game workers are forced to refine hours (Yes, literal hours) in work-worlds under grueling conditions. People are allowed to leave, but no transport is provided so they have to stay and work until they die, just to survive. People spend 24 hours of their day refining maybe an hours worth of "pure" hours that the upper class can use to live longer.

To learn the basics  of this does not take a person even 10 minutes. One can delve deeper into this rabbit hole of course. But the basic information is already clear on how the upper clases abuse the workers, how different the life of a worker and an aristocrat is. For fuck sakes, the Queen sits on a literal THRONE of hours and is practically immortal.

And what Atlas shows is nothing, even when it tries the best it can do is one or two stereotypes of those "clueless Atlesians" not understanding the danger they are in and the like.

Create your own story

This results in what i can only describe as a "Create your own story" kind of situation which leads to HUGE disagreements and conflicts when analyzing the show. For some people in the fandom seeing the big screens with Ironwood and Winter in them + Mantle not liking military is enough for them to create an entire narrative for themselves about how Authoritarian Atlas is.

I still remember the first time i was involved in V7 starting episode megathreads. People literally stated that Jaques makes his workers buy their tools with their own money. When i contested this claim i was downvoted to oblivion. There is nothing to indicate that but people decided that it is true and that is that.

And this is especially grating because the lack of information given is seemingly intentional and parts of the fanbase will tell you that you are stupid if you dont create your own story. How many times have we critics seen the claims of "See, critics cant analyze the show" in regards to us disagreeing with the majority opinion or refusing to create headcanons for ourselves?

It is especially annoying when people genuinely believe that their headcanons are genuine canon, and its almost impposible to change such a notion of theirs. Nor very easy to argue.

The fix would not be difficult

Fixing most of this would be easy. Instead of vague gesturing at tired workers we could be shown abuses done by the SDC or other companies? Maybe this would even allow Blake to actually do something in the volume. Instead of vaguely gesturing at them being tired show how they get injured for even the smallest reward ammount and the like, show how the company underpays them.

Instead of vaguely gesturing at Ironwoods control make it known how exactly Atlas political system operates, how many seats there are, what are people on them responsible for etc. You can even have Ironwood slowly assuming power ina belief that he is doing so to protect people.

Greed to be myself and have things only belong to me

my greed for money knows now end, I just got the fattest paycheck I've gotten in like a good while. I had to use it all and dip into my savings to pay off the credit card balance I had accrued by selfishly paying for my current necessities such as gas, my college tuition, and the little trips for fast food for me and my boyfriend. The last one makes me a little mad, but I know for a fact he's spend well over $300 on us dining in to semi-fancy restaurants. All I've done is cover the tip to the waiters and waitresses. The fact that I had to do that but suddenly he had enough money to buy somewhere to an 0dd $100 worth of weed was on sale. Is a little bit of a red flag. A lot of things about him are a red flag maybe. He did make me more conscious about my body when he told me I was the fattest girl he's ever dated, I hate that he tells me that my body type is like Florence Pugh. I hate that he squishes my arms and says he loved my fat arms.

I wish he wouldn't comment on my body at all, but at the same time I've asked him if he's noticed a difference in my body since I started working out consistently again.

I need to vow to myself that I will not make free time to hang out with him. If he wants me, he should at least have the courtesy to pick me up with his car. I had an idea to go the carnival and he paid for most of it, but I paid $15 back because I thought that it was going to be a lot cheaper than it was. He went on and would sign up for a trip with no second thought. I should do the same and really enjoy my time on my own. I'll get lost in this relationship otherwise. I want to continue this routine I had to get up at 5 in the morning make time to exercise, educate myself, and meditate. I think that was a time I felt true peace. I've put on the alarm to wake up at 5 am, but everyday I turn it off and go back to sleep.

I am grateful that I sleep so deeply and so soundly now, when there was so many nights in the past where I nearly begged to sleep forever if it meant that I could finally rest my mind. I fear I may go to much in the opposite direction now. Sleeping instead of thinking and living my life for myself first. I have to ALWAYS remember to put myself first.

So that means even though we have been together for a year, if continue to feel like he's harming my progress rather than adding to it. I have to end this relationship, even though, through my romantic stupor I now even have a bank account tied to him. I've exchanged so many gifts to him, and I've given my body to him. I need to get rid of this notion that just because I gifted him my first body doesn't me he has to be my last. As much I would like that to be the case. The problem is I do love him, the way he looks at me, and the way he talks to me. I just hate the way he makes decisions and the way he doesn't seem to remember boundries I set. How he makes me want to prod him into being sad, or tries to guilt me into paying for this when he knows he makes more money than me. I can't shake the feeling that he really isn't that serious about me. He's lying when he says he wants me to be his wife one day, and to be the mother of his children. I hate that he says his family will be heavily involved when I know I will be seeing as pretencious because i will say that this baby is mine first. If I see any way that I don't agree with by any of mine of his family members, I won't want to let them take care of my child again.

What was the good again? Oh right. He always reassures me when I ask if he's mad that he's not, that he's means it, he always makes me feel beautiful. Even when he did say I was fat. It felt more like an objective adjective than a sharp criticism. I know from my own mother any time I've fluctuated in weight how it feels like to be called fat as an insult. I didn't feel that at all when he told me that. Or maybe I'm making excuses for him? Maybe I'm re-framing all those red flags with my rose-colored glasses. All these thoughts feel like conversation that need to be had. I don't like that I'm writing about this rather than talking about it. I've learned better than to keep everything bottled up and be surprised when I explode.
