Some Important Supplements for Good Health
There are several supplements that can help your body stay healthy. These vitamins have been shown to improve immunity and slow the ageing process. They may also improve your vision and strengthen your immune system. Vitamin A, also known as beta-carotene, is necessary for the proper functioning of your eyes and soft tissues. Apricots, guavas, and pumpkins, among other fruits and vegetables, contain this vitamin. Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, promotes wound healing and raises levels of the neurotransmitter norepinephrine, which gives us a sense of alertness.
Vitamin D Health
Its role in boosting immunity and supporting the immune system can aid in disease prevention. During the COVID-19 pandemic, vitamin D became a major concern, and its role in infection prevention is now being investigated. Vitamin D, according to Barry Boyd, M.D., an oncologist and hematologist at Yale Medicine, aids in disease prevention. Cenforce Professional a male erectile dysfunction medication, is now available. The USPSTF was unable to establish a balance between the benefits and risks of vitamin D supplementation. Although adequate levels of 25-OH-D may reduce cancer incidence, no scientific evidence suggests that higher levels of this vitamin reduce cancer risk. Furthermore, more research is needed to determine whether vitamin D deficiency increases the risk of cancer. Furthermore, it is unknown whether increased vitamin D exposure can prevent cancer or how levels will change over time. A lack of vitamin D is one of the most common causes of rickets, a disease in which bone tissue fails to mineralize. Soft, weak bones and skeletal deformities are among the symptoms of Ricket. Severe deficiency can cause failure to thrive, developmental delay, hypocalcemia, cardiac arrhythmias, and dental abnormalities.
Vitamin B12
Although many people believe that taking more Vitamin B12 is bad for you, research shows that it is required for proper brain and red blood cell function. Even though a higher dose of Vitamin B12 is not harmful, taking vitamin supplements would benefit a healthy approach to ageing. However, some researchers have questioned whether higher doses of vitamin B12 can lower the risk of cancer or dementia. Vitamin B12 deficiency can cause a number of problems. Although symptoms often appear gradually, a deficiency can lead to a variety of complications, including mental, physical, and emotional issues. For example, if you are deficient in vitamin B12, you will experience fatigue, weakness, and mental fog. The condition can cause depression, paranoia, and hallucinations in severe cases. People with digestive disorders or who have had intestinal surgery are also at risk of vitamin B12 deficiency. An ileum or stomach operation may result in intrinsic factor deficiency, a symptom of vitamin B12 deficiency. Furthermore, people with digestive disorders like celiac disease or Crohn's disease may be vitamin B12 deficient.
Vitamin E
Vitamin E is a fat-soluble antioxidant that protects cells from free radical damage. Free radicals are thought to contribute to ageing and certain diseases by causing harm to healthy cells. Vitamin E also helps to strengthen the immune system and prevent blood clots. It also serves a variety of important functions, including maintaining cardiovascular health and preventing vision loss. Vitamin E is a necessary nutrient that should be consumed on a daily basis. One of the most significant benefits of vitamin E is that it stimulates the production of prostaglandins, a type of natural sterol that regulates numerous bodily processes. Water-soluble vitamin E supplements should be taken by people who have digestive issues. Vitamin E is also necessary for healthy skin and eyes. Some vitamins may interact with vitamin E, so read the labels before taking any supplements. Several studies have been conducted to determine the amount of vitamin E required for heart health. The Framingham Heart Study and the Physicians' Health Study II included over 4,000 people who did not have cardiovascular disease. While vitamin E supplementation did not reduce the risk of heart disease, it did prevent some strokes. Despite contradictory findings, the research suggests that Vitamin E may play an important role in cardiovascular health maintenance.
Magnesium Health
Half of the American population is thought to be magnesium deficient, which has been linked to cardiovascular disease, depression, and Type 2 diabetes. The mineral is abundant in plant and animal foods, so a varied diet should suffice. If your diet is magnesium-deficient, you should consider taking a magnesium supplement. People who consumed more magnesium than recommended had an 8% lower risk of developing hypertension, according to a recent meta-analysis of seven prospective cohort studies. Nuts have a low magnesium content of about 80 milligrammes per ounce. This is roughly 20% of your daily recommended intake. The same amount of magnesium is found in a quarter cup of peanuts or pumpkin seeds. Seeds are also high in fibre and antioxidants. Seeds can also help to compensate for nutritional deficiencies. If you want to learn more about magnesium, visit Nature Made. Magnesium deficiency can cause a variety of symptoms including fatigue, weakness, and nausea. A blood test can be performed by a doctor to determine your levels. However, most people who have low magnesium levels will not be able to get enough magnesium from food alone. Because their bodies do not absorb magnesium well, they have higher levels of magnesium in their urine than younger people. Despite this, older people are more likely to be taking medications that reduce their magnesium levels.
Zinc
Zinc, an essential nutrient for human health, can be found in a variety of foods. This mineral can be found in meat, seafood, baked beans, and fortified breakfast cereals. Zinc-rich foods include meat, seafood, nuts, whole grains, and legumes. On the other hand, vegetarians have fewer food options. All legumes are high in zinc. Nutritionist Krista Linares, who founded the Raleigh-based company Nutrition con Sabor, adds blueberries, nuts, and whole grains to the list. Oral zinc supplementation is popular for a variety of health reasons, including cancer prevention. It has the potential to prevent cancers of the stomach, head, neck, and throat. It also reduces the chances of these diseases recurring. Meat, fish, and poultry all contain this mineral. Zinc, as a trace mineral, is involved in over 100 enzymes and chemical reactions in the body. It is essential for the formation of DNA, the formation of proteins, and the repair of damaged tissue. It is also necessary for the immune system and the production of antibodies against pathogenic bacteria. Low zinc levels are a leading cause of malnutrition and diarrhoea, a leading cause of diarrheal disease. Taking zinc supplements may help you meet your daily requirements. Cenforce 200  strengthens the immune system, keeping you healthy and preventing infection.
Folate Health
Folate is a vitamin that is required for red blood cell formation. It is also required for proper cell growth and function. Dark green leafy vegetables, nuts, and citrus fruits are all natural sources. Many fortified foods also contain folate. According to research, a high folic acid intake may lower the risk of developing heart disease and stroke. This, however, has not been demonstrated in humans. In women who do not intend to become pregnant, increasing their folate intake can lower their risk of developing cardiovascular disease. It also reduces the risk of neural tube defects, which can be fatal in newborns. Folic acid is also useful in preventing neural tube defects. In addition to improving overall health, studies have shown that folate reduces the risk of developing cancer. Folic acid consumption may reduce the risk of colorectal cancer, according to some epidemiological studies. It is believed to affect one-carbon metabolism, cell division, and DNA replication. Furthermore, it may suppress the development of some cancers in their early stages. High folic acid doses, on the other hand, may raise the risk of colorectal cancer. Read the full article

Aditi Jagtap Pune talks about individuals developing Cardiac Arrest in Youthful Age
Tumblr media
Giving reference to celebrity, Siddharth Shukla's ill-timed death that left everyone in shock and grief, Aditi Jagtap Pune , talks about heart attack, cardiac arrest and other cardiovascular diseases that have become a leading problem around the world. The actor was only 40 years of age and suffered a massive heart attack and relinquished to it thereafter.
Recently the number has been seen soaring in diagnosing and reporting cardiovascular diseases among the younger population. Many kinds of research have been conducted to find conclusive answers to such occurrences, which led to unravelling some factors that could lead to it.
Dr. Ranjit Jagtap, an enthusiastic fellow of the World Society for Pediatric and Congenital Heart Surgery (WSPCHS), Indian Association of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgeons (IACTS), American Association of Thoracic Surgery (AATS), and European Association for Cardio-Thoracic Surgery(EACTS), says that cardiovascular diseases have prevailed since the sempiternal time. It is not something that has recently been discovered or diagnosed but has been wreaking disarray for a protracted time. Nevertheless, contradicting its standard pattern of targeting the older community and those with pre-existing heart conditions, cardiovascular diseases have found a way to affect the younger population too. This has put forward warnings and concerns making people question the science behind it.
He further explains that there is no exemplary age to encounter a heart attack, the kind of lifestyle we make, the diet plans we act on, our workout routines and how we regulate our stress levels can fluctuate the likelihood of experiencing a heart attack. “While prolonging heart diseases have been predominant and a discernible tendency over the last decade, the surge in cases in last few years is more discomforting. Most healthcare consultants comprehend this upswing to be a forthright outcome of COVID-19 since the disease gravely affects the patient’s blood vessels” he adds.
Aditi Jagtap, Dr. Ranjit Jagtap daughter and the head of Ram Mangal Heart Foundation (RMHF), Pune on this says that when a person is in their twenties, they gradually proceed to cultivate inconsequential blockages because of heightened cholesterol levels or congenital factors. Though when the person encounters an acutely troublesome event and undergoes a significant bodily exertion without preparation or severe biological aggravations such as an infection, the exertion on the heart results in clots forming near the already existing blockages, ushering clots and even heart attack. She further says, young people, these days do not get any prior heart checkups. They begin gyming without considering a pre-cardiac check-up and then during gym, they perform treadmill workouts, cross-training, and even weight training, which leads to the thickness of the heart. Some even consume supplements which affect adversely and cause heart damage, leading to Arrhythmia.
There is no qualm that a robust lifestyle can impede cardiovascular diseases and also lessen the risk of cultivating other incurable diseases like diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, and hyperglycemia. Everyday routine and drill along with an adequate nourishing diet sure play a critical role in keeping diseases at bay. Nonetheless, evaluating the thriving digits of young cardiac patients, who are extra conscious and knowledgeable, there is more to it than meets the eye.
Dr. Ranjit Jagtap explains that a substantial segment of Indian humankind is also genetically predisposed to these intricacies, leading to cardiovascular disease.
"This genetic transposal of cardiovascular disease is generally identified to primarily be disseminated through the father’s side rather than the mother’s," he says.
Adding to it, he further accentuates that this genetic transmission impacts the younger breed approximately about 6-8 years before it affected their parents in the previous generation. When the genetic arrangement sets in, there is not much that one can do to prevent cardiovascular disease completely, but its perilous factors can be mitigated.
Aditi Jagtap Pune says, Cardiovascular diseases have often been correlated to stress and anxiety.
Research has inferred that high cortisol levels from long-term anxiety can make a person more inclined to high blood cholesterol, triglycerides, and blood sugar, and intensify the risk of hypertension. These are widespread risk factors for heart disease, she adds.
Young people have a lot of pressure - the pressure of achievements, pressure correlated with urbanization, and lifestyle - which often lead to smoking, drinking, and unwholesome eating habits and patterns. This in turn drives stress on the heart, leading to either heart attack, cardiac arrest or Arrhythmia.
Aditi stressed the fact, “An Ounce of Prevention is better than a Pound of Cure.”
"The most fundamental thing is to conduct a cardiac check-up. In case a person has a dominant family chronology of cardiac disorders, then one should visit a cardiologist or a cardiac electrophysiologist if need be."
In a nutshell, Aditi Jagtap Pune recommends "altering one’s sedentary lifestyle, curbing excess sugar consumption, monitoring lipids, regulating fat consumption, and quitting smoking and drinking, which boosts the chances of cardiovascular disease."

What are the complications of covid 19?
If you have COVID-19, your symptoms may be moderate and easily managed at home. For the majority of people, that is correct. However, if you are older or have another illness, such as diabetes or heart disease, you are more likely to have a severe type of COVID-19. But no matter what your age is, you should get tested for covid 19 at the coronation clinic because early detection will lead to quick treatment.
So let us now discuss the complications of covid-19-
Severe Cardiac Injury
Many COVID-19 patients who were hospitalised suffered heart difficulties, including arrhythmias and elevated levels of various cardiac disorders. However, it is unclear if the virus directly harmed the patients’ hearts or if the damage occurred as a result of the illness’s overall stress on their bodies.
COVID-19 may also cause long-term heart issues in persons who have recovered from coronavirus infection.
Severe Kidney Injury
This is not a common issue, but it is significant if it occurs. If your kidneys stop functioning properly, doctors will begin treatment to reverse the damage. You may require dialysis (in which a machine filters your blood) until your kidneys resume normal function. However, sometimes the damage is not repaired and people develop chronic kidney disease, which must be handled on a long-term basis.
Blood Clots
Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) is a disorder that causes your body’s blood-clotting response to malfunction. Unusual clots form, resulting in internal bleeding, organ failure, and death.
Those admitted to the hospital with COVID are more likely to develop clots than those admitted with the flu. Some were in the legs of patients (deep vein thrombosis, or DVT), the lungs (pulmonary embolism, or PE), or the arteries. However, none of the patients experienced DIC.
Respiratory Failure
When you have sudden respiratory failure, your lungs may not be able to pump enough oxygen into your blood or expel enough carbon dioxide. Both of these issues can occur concurrently. Respiratory distress failure has been the major cause of mortality among COVID-19 victims.
Everyone should be aware of the signs and symptoms of COVID-19, the illness brought on by the coronavirus, as well as the conditions that increase your risk of complications. So as you feel the signs then get tested immediately at the coronation clinic to avoid any serious complications.
Speedimed clinic is one of the best clinics to get tested for covid-19. You can contact us to learn more about our PCR, ART, and other tests.

Cardiac Arrest: Tips to save someone’s life
Tumblr media
Heartbeats are under the control of electrical impulses and when these impulses change their pattern, it leads to irregular heartbeat and the heart goes into a state known as arrhythmias. Under this state, the pumping of the heart is stopped or arrested and this is called cardiac arrest. Cardiac arrest can be fatal if appropriate steps aren’t taken immediately.
Cardiac arrest is often misunderstood as a heart attack, though the major difference between these two is that heart attack is caused due to a blockage in the heart, restricting the blood circulation and cardiac arrest is caused due to irregular electrical impulses. Although a heart attack can trigger Cardiac arrest.
Signs of Cardiac Arrest
Immediate Signs of sudden cardiac arrest are:
Loss of consciousness
No pulse
No breathing
Sudden collapse
Signs occurring before cardiac arrest are:
Chest pain/ discomfort
Rapid or irregular heartbeats
Shortness of breath
Unexplained wheezing
Dizziness
Heart palpitations
Steps to take if see someone having a cardiac arrest
Call for medical help- The first thing you should do if you see someone having a cardiac arrest is calling for medical help. 911 is the number to call in the USA and 102 in India.
Perform CPR- After calling for medical help, immediately check for the person’s breath, if he/she isn’t breathing normally start performing CPR. Clash your hand in the center of the chest. Push hard and fast on the person’s chest at the rate of 100 to 120 compressions. Let the chest rise during the compressions. If you are trained in CPR, check the airways and deliver rescue breaths after every 30 compressions. If you aren’t trained, just continue doing the compressions till a defibrillator is available to you or medical help arrives.
Use portable defibrillator- If a defibrillator is available to you, keep it on charge and perform compressions till it is charged. When it’s charged, stop with the compressions and place the defibrillator’s pads after peeling their back above the right chest and below the left chest. The defibrillator will check the heart rhythm of the person and will give you step-by-step instructions through automated voice. If the defibrillator recommends a shock, stand back, push the shock button and continue with chest compressions for the next 2 minutes or more. The defibrillator will let you know if another shock is needed and if it does, continue the process if not, then do chest compressions till medical workers arrive. Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) are generally available in many places such as shopping malls, train stations, airports, and other official public places. You can buy Portable AED for emergency purposes too.
Steps to prevent cardiac arrest in a long run
Eating a healthy diet
Staying active by exercising regularly
Reducing stress level
Stopping any type of consumption of alcohol and tobacco
Avoiding sugary and aerated drinks
Maintaining healthy weight
Post-Covid Cardiac arrest
Covid infects the heart cells and this leads to various cardiovascular complications such as cardiac arrest. Not only when the person is infected but also when the person is Covid-free. According to the Swedish study, the death rate of patients having a cardiac arrest in the hospital and out of the hospital increases 2.3 times and 3.4 times respectively within 30 days of being Covid-free. To be cautious, regular monitoring using an electrocardiogram (ECG) should be done for more than 30 days. Also, it is advised for people not to give CPR while treating a cardiac arrest as it may transmit Covid and to restrict only to chest compression till medical help arrives.
Not only aged people but also young children are at risk of having a cardiac arrest mainly due to their unhealthy lifestyles. Sometimes, heart-related problems might be genetic due to gene defects. Having accurate information about the diseases and what to do during these situations might help you save someone’s life.

What Is Telecardiology? The Ultimate Guide Of 2022
The rise of telecardiology equipment is not shocking to anyone, given the increased emphasis the health sector has placed on the telehealth industry. Telecardiology services are one of the many doors telehealth vs telemedicine have opened in medicine.
Telecardiology is necessary because unpredictable events like pandemics, severe weather, remote locations, and political turmoil can cause treatment to be delayed significantly.
To avoid things from falling apart, patients dealing with cardiac sickness frequently require brief medical Specialty treatments. Endocarditis, arrhythmias, atherosclerosis, strokes, chest pain, and hypertension management are some illnesses that necessitate frequent and routine trips to the emergency room. With growing age, routine cardiac exams are equally seen as necessary. The delivery of medical care can be made possible in a friendly and affordable manner with the help of telecardiology services.
What is Telecardiology?
“telecardiology” refers to examining individuals wearing an implantable medical device, such as a pacemaker, cardiac defibrillator, or musical holter.
With the help of this health model, it is now possible to connect patients with healthcare providers from any location in the world. Most telecardiology teams at medical facilities have a planned network of associates to help them manage these patients from around the world.

How have Telecardiology services transformed the healthcare landscape?
The diagnosis of cardiovascular diseases such as dead myocardial tissue, congenital coronary disease, and coronary supply channel infection is included in telecardiology. For such illnesses, this media also provides viable therapy options. The entire procedure is carried out virtually using video conferencing in healthcare.
In the United States alone, about 80,500 people experience chronic respiratory failure, and about 1 in 5 coronary events occur without the patient being aware of what is happening. In the unlikely event that we include Europe, cardiovascular infections are the leading cause of death for half the continent’s population. These enormous figures highlight the critical need to address heart health.
As the pandemic spread, victims suffering from COVID-19 flooded the clinics. Patients suffering from heart infections or other conditions in that regard turned out to be of secondary importance. Recognition of the need for an economic well-being model emerged during this period.
Telehealth software recovery specifically takes care of patient’s needs, even in rural and unreachable areas. Additionally, it allows workers to work at their own pace and provides medical services as a necessary break. The telecardiology facility for medical treatment is empiric; it has served several patients during the pandemic, and medical service providers constantly repair prior errors and missteps to transform this into a robust framework.
Telecardiology can help older patients save time, money, and energy. It is the new face of modern healthcare services.

Covid Related Athlete Deaths
As Monkeypox takes over health headlines from Covid-19, the long term aftereffects of Covid on the body — and the body politic! — are still lurking among us, and within us, and athletes appear to be at higher cardiac risk of future Covid damage to the heart than the rest of the population.
Here’s a bit of research to share light on that concern:
Scientists have discovered an alarming increase in the incidence of sudden cardiac deaths in athletes following Covid-19 infection and/or vaccination.
In a new scientific paper, “Covid-related athletic deaths: Another perfect storm?” published in the journal Frontiers in Sports and Active Living, researchers Philip Maffetone and Paul Laursen highlight the disturbing trend of sudden cardiac death in the wake of the Covid pandemic. While SCD in athletes is relatively rare, even a single case is too many, especially considering most are preventable.
The researchers highlight the common cardiac risks associated with both Covid-19 infection and the side effects of mRNA vaccinations (Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna) — myocarditis and pericarditis.
Both myocarditis and pericarditis are acute inflammatory cardiac conditions that raise the risk of SCD. They can lead to cardiac dysfunction such as arrhythmias and heart failure. Viral myocarditis in asymptomatic athletes is a common cause, especially in those under 35 years including adolescents.
Myocarditis tends to develop rapidly in younger individuals, mostly after a second vaccination; pericarditis tends to affect middle age and older patients later, after either the first or second dose.
It’s been long known that physical activity can increase the risk of death in those with myocarditis. In addition, high-intensity exercise, which releases stress hormones called catecholamines, and is a common risk factor for overtraining, can suppress the immune system and risk infection, and promote inflammation. These problems can last several days, even after a single exercise bout. By comparison, a similar type of cardiac injury is observed in the hearts of some patients recently given mRNA vaccines (which can increase heart inflammation) and in post-Covid-19 infections. Health practitioners, parents, and coaches should recognize the potential added risk of mRNA Covid vaccination in athletes and take the necessary precautions.
Many athletes with SCD had no apparent signs or symptoms and first presented with sudden death. However, about 30 percent reportedly had chest pain, shortness of breath, performance decline, or palpitations leading up to the event. Better healthcare and education can help prevent such events.
As we age, and as we become more aware of the lingering, hidden, attacks against our bodies from a variety of viruses, and other diseases, the way to persevere-to-overcome is to stay alert to symptoms — even if we are not currently infected — and to test. Get methodological baselines. Compare pedagogic moments in time. Find the trends.
With professional athletes, it will always be easier to spot a health anomaly before it hits, and so the rest of us sometime athletes might do better than to just sit and wonder about the lurking future. We need to proactively ask our medical support teams to test us, verify us, and care for the needs we do not yet understand that we have.

Heart Palpitations As Well As Ectopic Beats
They can deteriorate into the fatal cardiac chaos called ventricular fibrillation. Various people experience heart palpitation symptoms in various means. Palpitations can feel like the heart is trembling, throbbing, flip-flopping, murmuring, or pounding.
For Robinson, one of the most important factor is that individuals seek responses, either from an application or from a medical professional's visit, as opposed to chalking their palpitations as much as anxiety or something mild.
From poor migraines to standing also promptly, dizziness and also faintness can happen for a selection of factors.

If you have https://scopezan.com/ actually never ever had heart palpitations prior to, see your service provider. The only means to recognize for certain if you have an arrhythmia or not is to talk with a medical professional or try putting on a heart monitor. However, there are various other indications of arrhythmias that you can watch for. While anxiety alone can create palpitations, Robinson stresses that rejecting palpitations as a sign of anxiousness without a test or additional screening is a poor suggestion.

"It relates to a leading chamber of the heart pressing when shutoffs aren't open, which sends out blood backwards," Robinson explains. There are many points that can create your heart to really feel a little off, several of which are mild and also a few of which are extra severe. "A change in rhythm can reverberate even more and also utilize the upper body and the chest wall as a drum," Robinson clarifies. "The public does not need to evaluate themselves for palpitations to see if they have COVID," Robinson says. It's also vital to keep in mind that these percentages vary according to different demographics. Older grownups, for example, are more probable to have an actual arrhythmia.
Threat Factors
It is necessary to recognise that these arrhythmias are triggered by free influences over initiation of impulses, as well as not intrinsic disease of the conduction system. In the majority of situations, people who experience heart palpitations in the evening do not have substantially various heart rhythms contrasted to during the day. During the night, however, heart palpitations are typically a lot more visible since there are fewer sounds and also experiences to distract from the feeling of your heartbeat. Both types of rest apnoea led to sleep interruption and also nocturnal hypoxia, with a greater occurrence of atrial fibrillation and also ventricular arrhythmias amongst those with sleep apnoea than among controls. There is clearly a link between CHF as well as rest associated arrhythmias, and also the nature of this organization remains to be checked out and defined.

“Despite only 4,224 confirmed cases of COVID-19 reported on Thursday, recent wastewater monitoring by Ontario’s COVID-19 Science Advisory Table shows that the province is currently seeing between an estimated 100,000 to 120,000 new cases a day, with the Kingston, Frontenac and Lennox and Addington Public Health catchment area seeing the highest case rates in the province.
According to the COVID-19 Science Table dashboard, KFL&A currently leads the province in COVID-19 cases per million habitants per day, with more than 520 cases per million habitants reported per day.
As cases in the province reach a record high, Ontario Health Minister Christine Elliot said Thursday that the surge is not concerning, as a rise in cases was predicted once public health measures were eased.
“We have to learn to live with COVID as it is now,” Elliot said in the legislature on Thursday.
For Dr. Dick Zoutman, an infectious disease specialist at Queen’s University, the province has shown little evidence that anything has been learned.
“We talk about wanting to learn to live with COVID, but you can only do that if you’ve learned something and you use what you’ve learned....We should be doing a lot more than we are doing. We are allowing this to pass us by and, really, there’s no need for this. It is not entirely preventable, but it is largely preventable.”
For Zoutman, the argument currently used by public health to justify widespread infection — that milder illness leads to fewer deaths — fails to consider the longer-term consequences of the virus.
“There’s the whole issue of what does COVID do long-term? We know that the virus goes after the lining of all our blood vessels, we know it shrinks your brain, we know that it causes all kinds of heart and lung problems — cardiac arrhythmias, heart attacks, lung damage — things we haven’t even discovered yet. This virus has far-reaching consequences that we just don’t understand yet, so it is just good common sense for everybody to take precautions,” he said.
Zoutman is echoing the calls of infectious disease doctors and health-care workers across Ontario: The reinstatement of mask mandates and other simple and effective protective measures.
“It’s the simple things: masks, vaccines, ventilation, capacity limits and increased testing. These are protections; they are not restrictions. These are easy things to do that we’ve learned are very effective and would turn this around and protect as many people as we can protect. They’re remarkably effective, but we’re just not doing it. It’s really nuts. I just don’t understand why we’re not doing this,” he said.
Members of the Ontario COVID-19 Science Advisory Table, including scientific director Dr. Peter Juni, have been loudly calling for the reinstatement of the mask mandate.
Speaking to The Canadian Press, Juni warned of a potential “tidal wave” of infections if masks aren’t worn, and urged consistent communication:
“recommending that it (is) really important right now for everybody to wear masks indoors again.”
Increasing testing is also a strategy that Zoutman believes is crucial to understanding the full picture of COVID-19 both regionally and provincially.
“We’re flying blind. We don’t have the information that we need to inform us. We can’t tell you if there’s a new variant because we need tests to do that. We can’t tell you where the cases are, what’s going on and how many cases there are. We really do need to have the PCR testing opened up,” he said.
While fewer hospitalizations is always good news, Zoutman suggests the success of our pandemic response should extend beyond simply keeping people out of hospitals.
“We shouldn’t judge this by how many ICU beds we think we can handle and how many people we can handle in ICU beds, but rather how many cases can we prevent from getting sick so they don’t have to go to hospital in the first place?” he said.
“All those people that do end up in hospital are desperately ill, and hospitals staff are exhausted. Many of them are getting sick themselves, and there is a real struggle to catch up on the huge backlog of patients.””
