Animal of the Day!
Bobcat (Lynx rufus)
(Photo from National Geographic)
Conservation Status- Least Concern
Habitat- United States; Southern Canada; Mexico
Size (Weight/Length)- 18 kg; 124 cm
Diet- Small mammals; Reptiles; Birds
Cool Facts- Despite being the most numerous wild cat in North America, it’s almost impossible to spot a wild bobcat. Being at home in forests to deserts to open grasslands and cities, bobcats are the ultimate small animal predator. Holding small territories, bobcats keep rodent and rabbit populations stable. Although capable of taking down animals as big as elk and pronghorn, bobcats mostly stick to smaller critters. Female bobcats give birth to a handful of kittens every spring. The kittens stay with their mom until the following winter, learning how to hunt and survive in the constantly changing world.
Rating- 11/10 (The smallest lynx species but no less formidable.)

Canadian Lynx Kitten
"The Canadian Lynx (Lynx canadensis) is a North American mammal of the cat family, Felidae. It is a close relative of the Eurasian Lynx (Lynx lynx). Some authorities regard both as conspecific. However, in some characteristics the Canadian Lynx is more like the Bobcat (Lynx rufus) than the Eurasian Lynx. With the recognized subspecies, it ranges across Canada and into Alaska as well as some parts of the northern United States.
With a dense silvery-brown coat, ruffed face and tufted ears, the Canadian Lynx resembles the other species of the mid-sized Lynx genus. It is larger than the bobcat, with whom it shares parts of its range, and over twice the size of the domestic cat."

NATURE STUDY CANADA LYNX FEBRUARY 7, 2023 FELINES RELATING TO ANY OF THE MANY MEMBERS OF THE CAT FAMILY We have three members of the cat family living in British Columbia. They are all elusive creatures that we seldom get to see in person. We will start our study with the: CANADA LYNX (LYNX CANADENSIS) The Canada Lynx is a medium-sized short-tailed long-legged cat with large feet. It weighs in at 7-18 kg and has a shoulder height of 45-60 cm. It has large perky ears with long protruding black hairs. A long facial ruff ringed in black and fine black stripes on the face blend into the buffy grey sides ending in a short stubby tail tipped in black. The large feet are excellent for walking in snow and the footprint of this cat is broader than an adult human hand. Note its tall hind end and sturdy legs. The lynx is typically a solitary hunter and uses ambush techniques to capture its prey. They live and hunt in northern forests with dense thickets and fallen trees. Their main food source are Snowshoe hares but they will also feed on squirrels, grouse, and small rodents. The life cycle of the lynx has been closely linked to the that of the hare. More lynx kittens will likely survive and reproduce when there is an abundant population of hares. Lynx population declined in years with few hares and for several years after. They are a silent hunter; their large well furred feet impart little noise and serve them particularly well in deep snow. The Canada Lynx breeds in March or April and the young are born in May or June. The mother lynx will den in an unimproved space under a fallen log or in a cave. The female will raise her young alone, with adult contact being restricted to mating. The average litter is 2-3 kittens. They are a soft grey colour with dark grey stripes and bars on their body and legs. Their eyes open in about 12 days and they are weaned in 2 months. They will stay with their mother through their first winter and acquire their adult coat at about 10 months. Every Species of Kitten
To celebrate the USA’s win--and it is a win, in spite of all the very real concerns--I thought I’d make another cat post, because they make people happy and it’s a happy day! Going to try to find three images per species, but some are pretty hard to find as many of these cats are rare and/or elusive!
First off, the subfamily of roaring kittens! Pantherinae:
Clouded leopard (Neofelis nebulosa):
Sunda clouded leopard (Neofelis diardi), not common:
Leopard (Panthera pardus):
Tiger (Panthera tigris):
Snow leopard (Panthera uncia):
Lion (Panthera leo):
Jaguar (Panthera onca):
Second and final (and much bigger) extant subfamily in Felidae, which is the purring kittens! Felinae:
Marbled cat (Pardofelis marmorata) does not want you to see its babies!:
Asian golden cat (Catopuma temminckii):
Bay cat (Catopuma badia), babies are elusive to say the least:
Serval (Leptailurus serval):
Caracal (Caracal caracal):
African golden cat (Caracal aurata), this is literally all I could find in the way of kittens:
Pampas cat (Leopardus colocola):
Andean mountain cat (Leopardus jacobita), very elusive baby:
Ocelot (Leopardus pardalis):
Margay (Leopardus wiedii):
Kodkod (Leopardus guigna), when the adult already looks like a kitten, the kitten looks...exactly the same as the adult, just smaller:
Geoffroy’s cat (Leopardus geoffroyi):
Oncilla (Leopardus tigrinus):
Souther tiger cat (Leopardus guttulus):
Bobcat (Lynx rufus):
Canada lynx (Lynx canadensis):
Eurasian lynx (Lynx lynx):
Iberian lynx (Lynx pardinus):
Cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus):
Cougar (Puma concolor):
Jaguarundi (Herpailurus yaguaroundi):
Pallas cat (Otocolobus manul):
Rusty-spotted cat (Prionailurus rubiginosus):
Leopard cat (Prionailurus bengalensis):
Fishing cat (Prionailurus viverrinus):
Flat-headed cat (Prionailurus planiceps), couldn’t even find any photos, had to screenshot a video:
Sunda leopard cat (Prionailurus javanensis), another not easy to find kitten!:
Jungle cat (Felis chaus):
Black-footed cat (Felis nigripes), just remember this species has one of the highest kill rates of any cat:
Sand cat (Felis margarita):
Chinese mountain cat (Felis bieti):
European wildcat (Felis sylvestris):
African wildcat (Felis lybica):
and finally, Domestic cat (Felis catus)!:
Remember, there is only one species of kitten on this list that belongs as a pet, and that is our beautiful domestic cat. Some of the wild species are endangered, and as precious as all these babies, the wild ones are best left to the wild. :)

Physical Description
Morch, T. (2012).
The Canada lynx is a medium-sized cat with distinguishable characteristics which are their pointed black ear tufts, a short black-tipped tail, large webbed paws, and silver-grey to red-brown pelage. The different coat colour is attributed to a change in seasonality, being lighter during the winter and darker during the summer.
James, W. (2016).
Kittens are also born with a red-brown pelage along with stripes and spots. Newborns are altricial despite having well developed fur with guard hairs and under hairs. Their eyes are closed and they have no teeth until after about 10 days when they open and start gaining weight. Between males and females, there exists a slight sexual dimorphism in size in that males are 15 to 25% bigger than females (13). In addition, males have more subcutaneous fat than females.
