In any universe, no one could possibly sway Silver from declining Raihan's offer, not when soul-stirring battles and the promise of improvement were what he always sought for, leading him to where he was tonight after years of stumbling and falling to stand up on his own feet.

"Of course," Silver smirked, snatching Raihan's hand for a tight handshake. The fire in his heart burst into a fiery flame, and before he could extinguish it, he asked, "Well, are you ready to lose?"

Or: 5 years after his appointment as one of Johto's Elite Four, Silver was invited to Galar to celebrate Hammerlocke Gym's newest leader. There, his own stage in life and the person that he loved the most awaited him.

"I can raise him," Silver blurted, and it didn't feel like he was present when he claimed the now-wriggling Deino as his own. It sounded much like his past self, the one who stared at the happy families traveling for their vacations aboard the S.S. Aqua, his frail heart wishing for a chance to live just as normal as those kids who never knew how lucky they actually were. The decision, as abrupt as it may be, felt right as it glided off of his tongue.

Or: Silver was assigned to raise a Pokémon from when it was an egg by Lance, and there was more lesson that he learned than just forging a bond with the newest addition to his team.

But Lance, the first person who saw past all of his childish mistakes and only saw a kid beneath them, had walked into his gym and noticed the spiral that he hid from everyone else in a single glance, and the simple truth of it was the final blow needed to break Silver's wavering resolve, forcing him to croak out, "No matter how different this city and gym looked now, I still see my parents in every corner and crevice, and the past just… continues to haunt me. I thought they would go away with time, but they only drove me crazy instead."

Or: instead of enjoying the Tanabata Festival with the rest of the Viridian City like a good Gym Leader, Silver instead shut himself off and found an unexpected company with Lance. Truths he tried so hard to hide bled so easily when he was facing someone that actually knew him in his hometown.
