Thanks so much @clove-pinks for tagging me in this reading ask!
Last read: In Ascension by Martin MacInnes. My favourite book of the year so far. Dazzling. Like sticking your head underwater and suddenly realising you can still breathe. It completely changed the way I look at selfhood – we are so much more plural than our individualist society would have us believe. We are home to ecosystems of bacteria, and just as we ourselves are part of earth's ecosystems. It's about a Dutch scientist, Leigh, who becomes involved in algal research that takes her into the depths of both ocean and outer space. Absolutely dizzying and so, so good.
Currently reading: Infinite Ground by Martin MacInnes (he has conquered me heart, body and soul), Hyperobjects by Timothy Morton, Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer, The Plague by Jacqueline Rose, and the correspondence of Martin Heidegger and Hannah Arendt.
Next read: The Magic Mountain by Thomas Mann, and the poems of Thomas Traherne.

answered this in a prev ask but the white book by han kang and on earth we're briefly gorgeous by ocean vuong. both inspired me to write fucking better bc they use such simple things and words but the metaphorical implications just blow me away :'//

Random Moxie HCs [Part One]

Mox has a few tattoos; a large raven in flight with void trailing behind its feathers, a rowan branch clutched in its talons on her back. An ace of spades on the inside of her left wrist in honor of her mother and grandfather.
She possesses a large mark that most people assume is yet another tattoo, appearing as a void-stricken vein branching off into smaller veins on the side of their neck and crawling down the top of their right shoulder. Upon closer inspection though, you can see that this is actually more similar to a scar. It was from the first time she died and was brought back by the vault itself.
On the inside of her right wrist, she has a lone freckle in the shape of a heart. At some point she was teased about- it was like she truly had her heart on her sleeve. She hated that.
The scar along the bridge of her nose and her cheeks isn’t actually a complete scar, it is disconnected on one side and earned through one of the many fights she got into in her past. That one being she she decided that just because she was being held back…she wasn’t giving up. Going literally headfirst into her attacker and the weapon they had. It was stupid and painful- but it did stagger them and shock the people holding her. Enough so that with the adrenaline, she was able to simply grin, face already covered with fresh blood from the new gaping wound, her nose broken- the attackers backed off. Claiming that it wasn’t worth it when Moxie was clearly crazy and had no sense of self-preservation. Both things were only partially true.
Scars litter her body from any number of things; fights, accidents, random events- she has so many that some of them she doesn’t even remember the story behind.
Her eyes are reminiscent of her father’s and grandfather’s save for the sectorial heterochromia she possesses in her right eye. The top right silver is the same rich brown as her mother’s. The rest is a hyacinth blue color with a golden bloom around the pupil which makes her eyes occasionally appear grey and hunter-green instead of gold and blue depending on the lighting.
Has always had oddly sharp teeth, inheriting them from the Rowan side of her blood. Her hair has also always been that unnaturally bright crimson, despite the fact that her mother’s was a much more natural auburn sort of ginger. [This is namely due to traits being amplified by Rowan blood.]
In addition to marathoning movies with her mother and researching the origins of the monsters within them, Acelynn also had a unique taste in literature to read to her daughter. Stoker, Wilde, Poe, Shelley- any and all of the greats and could be betters if gothic literature. And Moxie loved it. In some ways it was to desensitize Mox early to the idea of things that go numb in the night, often telling the small child that sometimes humans, could be much more violent and cruel than any monsters you found in movies and books.
Mox has a soft spot in particular for Edgar Allen Poe, for a time before Reel-to-Real she even carried around a brick that she nicknamed Amontillado as both a companion and a ‘creative use’ tool/weapon. She still has Amontillado. It’s under the counter in Reel-to-Real.
Her first crush was, to the surprise of no one, Merletta McDaniels. The leader of the eventual misfit gang she would join in her adolescence.
She learned how to play some instruments during her time in the group just for fun, the members [at least, under Merletta’s rule] often taught each other new skills. Moxie has a fondness of the electric bass guitar, she enjoys feeling the deep vibration in her bones.
Smoking was something that she picked up from that group too- though she had been around it before. Both Leigh and Acelynn had been known to smoke on occasion. Her favorite brand is hard to find and called, ‘Odds-and-Ends.’ Mostly composed of tobacco and cloves/other herbs. It is highly fragrant when smoked but pretty good at taking the edge off. Though because of how hard it is to find, she doesn’t often smoke unless really needs one or finds an occasion where she feels like it.
Because of the events of her past, she has convinced herself that she is complacent on indulging in small acts of things she wants. Keeping people at arms length or from knowing too much about her in every other aspect to protect them and herself. She can be happy enough with other people’s happiness, with helping, with seeing them live. She can survive with the small flirtations and nothing more. Its what she’s always told herself after awhile.
It’s not really a secret that Moxie has trouble backing down. Ever the type to fuck around and find out and keep going until she gets through something if she gets herself into trouble, owning her mistakes and holding her responsibilities. She will refuse or decline things if she doesn’t want to do them or can’t- but if she is challenged and feels she can handle it; there’s no going back.
Has a love of cards thanks to her mom and Leigh. Though that extends to more than just playing cards. She holds a fondness for divining tarot cards too; having procured a set through a visitor once upon a time and studying it for a long while thereafter. She keeps that deck under the counter next to Amontillado and the playing card deck, that used to be Leigh's, on her person whenever she can.
One of the things she regrets losing the most from burning down the cabin she grew up in is the box of Floriography notes composed by her and her mother. One of the random jobs Acelynn had picked up had been a florist and with their shared love of movies and media, floriography became a point of interest. Eventually, they made a collection so that they could use the flowers to speak to one another or convey messages when one or the other wasn't around- or even if it was something that they were struggling to say. Leaving flowers behind. When Acelynn eventually switched to a new job or when flowers weren't available, drawings or even the flower names were left around as a substitute. Moxie memorized most of them, but...she misses having that box. They poured hours into researching and conferring the different messages and meaning, debating which ones fit and how to incorporate them. Plotting on if the meaning changed depending on the other flowers it was paired with, dedicating an entire chunk to combinations and bouquets. Mostly...she misses seeing her mother's handwriting and the memory of coming home from school or staying up waiting for her to come home so that they could work on it together in between replaying their favorite slasher flicks.

How much screentime is too much/too little for an antagonist? I have the feeling that, in many books, the antagonist is out of screen most of the time and just casually shows up to throw obstacles into the protagonist road. It's like they appear out of the blue, make a super quick appearance that has a disproportionate impact on the protagonist life, and then they disappear again.
In Harry Potter, Voldemort rarely shows up himself, specially in the first books. We do get a feeling of the threat he poses, but I never considered him an interesting antagonist until the last books.
In The Hunger Games we don't spend much time with Snow, and I honestly did not care much about him besides for some direct threats he made in the few moments he was around Katniss. Which makes sense, as he's ruling a country and has more important things to do than being around some 17 yo. I felt like the real antagonist here was the whole system, rather than Snow himself.
And I don't know if you're familiar with the books, but the antagonist in A Court of Thorns and Roses (guess it's Hybern but oh my) or even The Name of the Wind (the Chandrian) are just so absent and meaningless. Not that I didn't enjoy both series, but plot feels weaker without a compelling antagonist.
Do you think this is just a preference of mine, or is it actually important to keep your antagonist around to make him believable? I'm asking from total ignorance, as a reader, cause I've never written anything, but I'd like to learn about how the stories I love work.
And also, do you happen to have any book recommendations were the antagonist is strongly present, since that seems to be my thing? Thank you in advance for sharing your knowledge and sorry if my question is lame, I ended up messing a bit 😅😅
How Much Villains Need to Be Present in Your Story
So... I haven't read ACOTAR yet, but in HP and THG, there's something important to bear in mind. Although Voldemort himself doesn't show up much until the last books, most of the antagonists Harry and friends face through the earlier books are either Voldemort henchmen or allies (the Malfoys, Death Eaters, Dementors, Quirrell, Nagini, Barty Crouch Jr., the Giants, and even Dolores Umbridge whose prejudices certainly made her a villainous ally.)
With The Hunger Games, you hit the nail on the head... the antagonist wasn't just Snow, it was the entire system, and much of that system was either put into place by Snow or reinforced by him. So, in many ways, a lot of the antagonists in THG also qualify as henchmen or allies of Snow. Otherwise, they are henchmen, allies, or functions of the system (such as some of the violent tributes in the Games, like Cato and Clove.)
So, in both cases, while the "big bad" or main antagonist isn't always present, they are still pulling the strings via their henchmen and allies. And yes, in both cases there are antagonists who aren't necessarily henchmen or allies of the big bad, but 90% of them are. And when it comes to villains (as opposed to non-sentient antagonists like natural disasters, monsters, etc.) this is typically the case. Allowing for henchmen and allies broadens the villain's reach and creates surprises for the reader, where someone who was trusted (Professor Quirrell or Mad Eye Mooney for example) turn out to be agents/allies of the villain.
As far as stories where the villain plays a more direct role, the only thing that springs to mind at the moment is Leigh Bardugo's Shadow and Bone trilogy (though the villain has allies and henchmen, too.) The Wrath and the Dawn, maybe? Stephen King's It probably counts. Also, maybe The Lovely Bones? These are just a few off the top of my head, but keep an eye on the comments for other possibilities.
I think however, you'll probably find that in a lot of books, the villains may not be visibly present, but they are very much pulling the strings behind the scenes, as in HP and THG. :)

Salisbury Steak

Comfort food special right here! Bye bye hot girl summer, hello fat girl fall...
2 pounds Ground Chuck
2 cloves of minced garlic
1/4 cup Creole seasoning sauce
1 small onion, finely diced
2 tablespoons grain mustard
1 cup of panko crumbs
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
2 eggs
Salt and Pepper
Mix! And form into the size and shape that you like. Keep them all same size and shape so they cook the same.
Fry some bacon in a cast iron pan. Save the bacon for breakfast tomorrow, or if you are like me, that is your snacking bacon while you cook.
Keep the grease in the pan. Season the outside of your meat patties however you like. I used BT Leigh’s Somethin to Beef About.
Cook 3-4 minutes per side. I look for a deep brown color on both sides.
Remove meat and set aside. Add sliced mushrooms to pan. Add butter. Add garlic. Add flour. Add Guiness. Add beef broth and better than beef bouillon. Add thyme. Add salt and pepper. Simmer.
Add steaks back in. Spoon gravy on top. Simmer for 5-8 minutes or until they are done to your preference. I finished mine in the oven while I worked on my mashed potatoes.
Garnish with parsley.

The Gilded Wolves Book Review by Roshani Chokshi
This book was...I can’t quite place it. 
I definitely enjoyed it! And to me, it seemed like the reading experience went very quickly, which is usually synonymous with an enjoyable read, but there were definitely other moments when my head would cock to the side and I would think, “Huh?” and “I don’t get it” and “What even is happening right now?”
That about sums about my experience with The Gilded Wolves, thank you for coming to my Ted Talk. 
No, but really, 
 is the epitome of my exact taste and preference when it comes to a YA novel, at least on paper. Let’s go through the list:
1. A group of misfits coming together in some sort of friendship group/intimate team? Check. 
2. Banter and fluid dialogue? Check. 
3. Whimsy, magic, imagination, and world building steeped in exaggerated history? Check. 
4. Romance galore? Check and check. 
So if this novel checked all of the boxes, why aren’t I lauding it as the best thing I’ve ever read? 
I’ll get to that, don't worry. 
First, I’ll start by saying that this book isn't the most original thing I’ve ever read. In fact, it probably doesn't even crack the top ten. This criticism will likely come up time and time again so I’ll just say it from the get go: having all the ingredients for a good book does not make it a good book. I do think The Gilded Wolves is a fun, fluid, and interesting read, but it's not the best in any category compared to other YA books out there. 
It’s not the best romance, the best friendship, the best magic, the best history, the most well-written, and it’s certainly not the best heist novel I've read, that cake definitely goes to Leigh Bardugo’s Six of Crows. 
It’s like this novel has everything you want and nothing at all simultaneously. 
Our main characters consist of a group of five individuals, all within their stereotypical archetypes of course. 
You’ve got the stone-cold calculating leader that chews cloves of all things, the beautiful girl that’s sort of a robot, the half Filipino boy who struggles with his identity and proving himself, the flamboyant aristocratic outsider, and the girl who can only think, breathe, and speak science, but doesn’t understand a modicum of social interaction or communication. 
They were good characters, but they just weren’t the best. They weren’t memorable in the slough that is the ocean of YA original characters. They had good moments of banter, friendship, and interaction, but also moments of overbearing cliche, unbelievable character dialogue options, and very predictable motivations and actions. 
The plot is worse believe it or not. 
The bare bones of the story is that you have a society in which there are secret Houses that possess Babel rings-artifacts that display their House’s standing as well as give them unique powers- and things called Babel fragments which are buried...somewhere. 
These fragments essentially gift certain people of the population abilities and advantages while other people are just...normal, I guess. I don’t know, no one seems to care about the disparity. 
Then there are other things like Sphinxes which are...guards, I think? But not? I actually don’t even know if they’re truly human. And other cool technological and magical items like Mneno Bugs which record stuff and umm, Tezcat Doors which allow you to see out, but not in or something? 
If you haven't caught on by now, the magic and world building of this novel has much to be desired. 
It’s like Chokshi has the ideas down, the rough outline of what her world looks like and how it operates and how the characters live and struggle in this world, but instead of giving it to us, she gave us the Sparknotes version. 
Half the time I was reading, I felt like I was missing a good 50% of the content needed for the stakes and tension to actually mean something, which is such a shame because her ideas are interesting. They have so much potential.
 I love the idea of old Houses and historic artifacts and complicated political histories interwoven with social implications and new-age technology, but the world-building and magic system just falls flat on his face. I needed more from Chokshi about the world and how it operated and less conversation about Tristan’s goddamn tarantula. 
We read as our main group of five attempt to steal and retrieve a Horus Eye-some piece of something that acts as a Somno-a default button basically-to Babel Fragments. Confused? I am too. 
This book, at the end of the day, is nothing special, but it is enjoyable. This book has several tropes and several things I love, which honestly made this a fun, amusing, and worthwhile read. I’ve actually already gone out to buy the sequel The Silvered Serpents already which is a positive connotation in and of itself. 
  I genuinely found this book delightful, but I also think it's because the parts that comprise this novel are all things I adore, whilst the sum of the parts is...lackluster and unforgettable. 
Since we are still in Quarantine and I miss concerts dearly, here is a metaphor for you: if anything, this is the opener to the band that you've actually waited at the concert to see. The opener isn’t horrible by any means, and it’s similar to other musical artists you like, but it’s not the main attraction or the highlighted draw, and at the end of the night, you’ll forget you watched it in the first place. 
Recommendation: If you like what I like, which are misfit groups, romance, historical Paris, magic, and heist novels, then you will definitely find it as engrossing and fun as I did. If you want something to rock your world, to compete with the likes of other YA juggernauts, then well, this book is not for you. Go read Six of Crows instead.

7. Writer I trust enough to read whatever they write? Oh geez, that’s a loaded question. I have such high standards with what I read, so it’s hard to say that there’s a single writer I trust no matter what. I do love Anne Bishop, though I have issues with her most recent works, yet I still enjoy them regardless. I’ve recent dove into Leigh Bardugo’s works and love them, so I can at least trust she’ll have an interesting story, even if I love some of her works more than others.
9. Favorite flavor of anything? I love warm spices like cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, and so forth. And yes, I’m a fan of pumpkin spice because that. Fight me! Raspberry or hazelnut with chocolate is a close second.
12. The question you ask new friends to get to know them better? I like asking people what they do in their downtime. You can learn a lot from a person from something simple like that. What hobbies do they enjoy? How do they prioritize their life outside of work? Do they rattle off a to-do list or just shrug and go, “Eh, not much.”
49. Superpower I wish I could have? Either the ability to freeze time or be like, physically invulnerable with the intent it will punch all my health issues in the face D:
65. What fictional universe would I like to be a part of? I really love the world in the Ephemera series by Anne Bishop. People can create their own worlds by tending to gardens and when they travel between them, they arrive where their heart desires to be, not necessiarly where they want to go. I always loved that idea and would gladly tend to my own garden to make worlds for people who feel they don’t belong anywhere (which is what one of the characters in the series does).
77. What is my current desktop picture? Beatrix from Final Fantasy IX! I named my laptop Beatrix due to the exterior color being called rose gold, so I needed an appropriate background :D
86. Who is my hero? I guess my mom? That’s kind of cheesy, but it’s true. She’s been through so much and continues to be kind no matter the circumstances. I always to aspire to be as wise, compassionate, and badass as she is.
88. What makes me really angry? Some bullshit at work I don’t fucking agree with. tl;dr - a shitty coworker didn’t get fired for something he should have despite HR stepping in.
149. Do I have any tattoos? Yup! I have Rinoa’s wings on my back with the Latin phrase “alis volat propris” (which translates to “she flies with her own wings”) and a semi colon beneath my left clavicle.
150. What is the best decision I have made in life so far? Sticking with my boyfriend of more than thirteen years. We’ve had a lot of bumpy times, but he makes me phenomenally happy and I couldn’t imagine getting through this life without him.
163. What do I love most about myself? I’m not afraid to stand up and speak. If people want my input, they’re going to get it, or in the case of my job, they’re going to get it whether they asked for it or not. I hate being quiet on matters that mean something to me. Nothing gets done by sitting around and waiting for someone else to do it.

202. How do I define love? Love is what makes you smile even when you’re too busy to slow down and think about it. Love is what shines through when you’re at your lowest. Love never judges and simply wants what’s best for you.
214. What TV character am I most like? Probably a mix between Pam Poovey from Archer and Rosa Diaz from Brooklyn Nine-Nine.
215. What is the weirdest talent I have? My face is very emotive and I am super bad at holding any semblance of a poker face, which results in making a lot of people laugh :D
