Bike Handlebar: Let's Explore Its Types
The bicycle handlebars have seen major modifications throughout the years. Comfort and efficiency can be greatly affected by shape, angle and basic qualities. In this post, we'll talk about a variety of bike handlebars, where they're most popular and why they take the shape that they do.
Riser bar
The most popular and basic kind of bicycle handlebars are riser bars, often known as upright bars.
Their unique feature is a bar that dips in the centre and rises at the ends, elevating the rider's hands over the seat. The brake levers are positioned where the fingers naturally rest, whereas the gear levers are where the thumbs operate.
These are the handlebars you'll find on most hybrid bikes and bikes used by commuters in the city. Although the flat bar form of bikehub MTB handlebars has been gaining popularity as of late, riser bars are still available.
Tumblr media
Drop bar
Drop bars are the most popular alternative to flat bars.
The rider is set up aerodynamically to minimise drag and maximise speed. Therefore, they are often only seen on racing bikes, such as road, gravel and cyclocross models. In addition, many touring bikes include drop bars, which allow the rider to use a variety of hand positions.
Flat bar (Straight bar)
Common on mountain bikes, hybrids and fixies, flat bars are the simplest kind of straight handlebars.
Some fixie bikes don't have brake or gear levers, but most have grips on both ends with levers at your fingers.
Moustache (Cruiser)
The Moustache bar is a particular kind of cruiser handlebar that encourages a more upright riding position and a more relaxed pace.
It's the kind of handlebar you'd find on the kind of low, relaxed bike you'd see roaming the boardwalks of every major city in the globe.
The handlebar is 'moustache-like' in appearance, with the ends curved back to place the rider's hands at a relaxed 45-degree angle. This kind of handlebar is only seen on leisurely cruiser motorcycles because, although pleasant, it compromises control at higher speeds.
High rise (Monkey bar)
A high-rise handlebar, often known as a "monkey bar" or "ape hanger," positions the rider's hands in a dangling posture far above the ground.
Bicycles with ape hanger handlebars are common on BMX models and stylish cruiser bikes, which gained popularity due to vintage Harley Davidson motorcycles.
The huge U-shaped body is the most striking feature of its design, with the handles protruding from the sides. Single-speed bikes often have just one front brake lever and no gear changers because of the rear coaster brake.
Similarly, there is a bicycle wheel. You can find it in a wide variety of styles. Order your bike today!

Canyon Showroom / Experience
Koblenz, Germany
April 27, 2024
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Barclay and I made a last minute decision to drive up to the Canyon bicycle manufacturer. It’s about 3 hours north. We did the classic “stop at the local bakery and stock up on breakfast treats.”
We both test rode bikes - gravel, mountain and electric. So many choices!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The complex included a small “museum” that showcased the winning bikes from Triathlon World Series and the Cyclocross World Championship.
The top picture is the bike from a Red Bull sponsored ride in the Alps and was specifically made for the rider’s stunts.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Koblenz is at a confluence point of two rivers. There is a big monument at the point.
Tumblr media
And pieces of the Berlin Wall!
Tumblr media
Coffee break in the town square!
Tumblr media
And a super cool fountain. Each tier represented a period of time in Koblenz history, dating back 3000 years!

How To Partner Your Event With Bikeflights in 2024
Calling all Event Directors and Staff: For nearly 15 years, Bikeflights has been the go-to partner for cycling events worldwide, ensuring riders’ bikes are shipped safely and arrive on time. As we gear up for 2024, we remain committed to providing the best bike shipping experience for riders traveling to do events of all types. Here’s how you can partner your event with us.
Tumblr media
Make Travel Easier For Your Riders
It’s a lot easier to travel for an event when you don’t have to bring your bike case or box with you to, through and from an airport. Your riders will speed through airport check-in and baggage claim, and their bikes will be awaiting them upon arrival at their chosen delivery location. All your riders have to do is relax and enjoy their travel to your event.
Calling Events Of All Types And Sizes
We work with events of all types: gravel, mountain bike, road, track, cyclocross, triathlon, BMX, adventure and fat bike, just to name a few. Some are competitive events, some are charity rides and some are consumer or industry shows. We’re happy to provide our shipping services to your event, whether it’s brand new or has been established for decades. And we partner with events of all sizes, too.
Tumblr media
How It Works
When you partner your event with Bikeflights, we work with you before, during and after your event to give your participants the best bicycle shipping experience.
We begin by connecting you with a direct Bikeflights Event Support Representative who will work with you on the logistics of bike shipping for your event. For each event, we create a custom, co-branded Bikeflights Event Shipping Guide for easy booking of bike shipments to/from your event. In your Event Shipping Guide, we’ll help you promote your designated event partner bike shop(s) and any bike receiving, assembly and packing services offered to your participants. Our Event Shipping Guides save you as the event promoter from answering some of the same logistical bike transport questions over and over.
Once your participants’ bike shipments are underway, we provide elite-level tracking and monitoring to ensure riders’ bikes get to and from your event as scheduled.
At your request, we’ll also provide you with a shipping report ahead of your event detailing the number of bike shipments coming and from whom. And we can even provide a PDF file of shipping labels for all return shipments if you are helping handle those for your riders. Finally, we can help you get self-adhesive label pouches and luggage tags if needed for your participants’ return shipments.
Our experienced Customer Support Team - made up of fellow cyclists - is available for assistance needed via live chat, email and phone.
Tumblr media
Spread The Word
We like to work together to co-promote your events and our services.
Your event gets featured in the Event Calendar on our website, and for several months leading up to your event, we also list your event in our Bikeflights monthly e-newsletter which goes out to more than 160,000 cyclists.
In return, we ask you to share news of Bikeflights’ bicycle shipping services and bike shipping boxes with your event participants via your website, social media and email communications with registered riders.
To begin the process of becoming a partner event, email us at [email protected] with some information about your event.

Gravel riding is one of the fastest growing cycling disciplines. But let’s face it, your typical gravel ride will also feature a fair share of road sections. We’ve created the perfect bike set up for mixing the road and the rough stuff, one combining a lightweight yet rugged carbon frame with sturdy alloy wheels and the sweet spot of gear ratios for multiple terrain.

More pics from other attendees of the Muddy Onion Spring Classic 4/27/24.
When I started this page over a decade ago I was going to events and races 2-3 times per week. Illness, injury, and some life changes good and bad severely curtailed my ability to take to do as much as often. The big content plans I had dwindled. The number of events, especially races in New England, is a fraction of what it used to be but there are still some old classics hanging on and a few promoters trying to infuse some life into the scene. The gravel scene which has swept the nation is bare bones here in southern New England but is thriving in the Northern New England states of Vermont and New Hampshire. Many New England events pre-date the terms gravel grinder and gravel cycling.

Bike Types – Beginner’s Guide | What Type of Bicycle Should I Buy?
Choosing the right type of bicycle depends on your specific needs, preferences, and the type of riding you plan to do. Here's a beginner's guide to different types of bicycles to help you make an informed decision:
Road Bikes: Designed for speed and efficiency on paved roads. They have lightweight frames, narrow tires, and drop handlebars. Road bikes are ideal for long-distance rides, racing, and fitness training on smooth surfaces.
Mountain Bikes: Built for off-road trails and rugged terrain. They feature wide, knobby tires, robust frames, and suspension systems. Mountain bikes are suitable for trail riding, mountain biking, and handling uneven surfaces, such as dirt, rocks, and roots.
Hybrid Bikes: Versatile bikes that combine features of road bikes and mountain bikes. They have a more relaxed riding position, wider tires than road bikes, and often come with a suspension fork. Hybrid bikes are suitable for commuting, recreational rides, and light off-road trails.
City/Urban Bikes: Designed for commuting and city riding. They typically have a more upright riding position, wider tires for comfort and stability, and features like fenders, racks, and lights for practicality and convenience.
Cyclocross Bikes: Similar to road bikes but with more durable frames and wider tire clearance. Cyclocross bikes are designed for off-road racing in cyclocross events, featuring a mix of pavement, gravel, and mud.
Folding Bikes: Compact and portable bikes that can be folded for easy storage and transport. They are popular among commuters and people with limited storage space.
Electric Bikes (E-bikes): Equipped with an electric motor to provide assistance while pedaling. E-bikes come in various styles, including road, mountain, hybrid, and city bikes. They are suitable for riders who want assistance with longer commutes or extra assistance on hills.
Touring Bikes: Designed for long-distance touring and carrying heavy loads. Touring bikes have a strong frame, relaxed geometry, and multiple mounting points for racks and panniers.
Gravel Bikes: Versatile bikes designed for riding on both paved roads and gravel or dirt paths. They have wider tires, endurance-focused geometry, and often come with additional clearance for mud and debris.
BMX Bikes: Sturdy bikes used for BMX (Bicycle Motocross) racing, freestyle tricks, and jumps. BMX bikes have smaller frames, single-speed drivetrains, and compact handlebars.
When choosing a bicycle, consider factors like your intended use, terrain, riding style, comfort, and budget. It's also advisable to visit a local bike shop, where experts can provide personalized advice and help you find the right bike based on your specific requirements.

Can a Road Bike Go on Gravel?
Nothing beats a road bike when it comes to speed, agility, and handling tight curves. On the other hand, you might find more adventure on gravel roads. Some paths can give you that feeling of freedom that comes with being off the beaten path.
Can a road bike go on gravel? In general, yes. There’s no need to feel limited on where you can take your road bike. Whether you’re new to road cycling or an experienced racer, gravel riding is something you shouldn’t necessarily avoid.
You might have doubts about whether your road bike can handle gravel roads. Don’t trade in your road bike just yet. Gravel roads are often less-traveled, which can make for a safer ride in many cases.
Which gravel roads are safe for road bikes? These are usually roads with small- to medium-sized pebbles that are well packed and minimally loose. The main concern for road bikes is their tires, which don’t do quite as well on loose gravel.
Tips for Taking a Road Bike on Gravel
Plan your route. Know where you’re going and have an idea of the nature of the roads you’ll be riding. Will there be extremely loose gravel in some spots? Consider driving the route before you tackle it on a bike. On your ride, be sure to bring a map or a phone with GPS capability.
Look for “rails-to-trails.”
Many bike-safe gravel roads include “rails to trails” paths where gravel trails replace old railroad lines. Most of these paths are very bike-friendly and well maintained.
Look for smooth tracks
As you ride the gravel road, look for surfaces worn down by vehicular traffic. Some of these tracks will seem as smooth as asphalt. Follow these lines as much as possible.
Keep your eyes on the road
Use extra care because your road bike won’t handle gravel as well as a mountain or cyclocross bike. In addition to loose gravel, watch for potholes and larger rocks. Don’t forget to scan the road up ahead for smooth tracks, traffic, or potential hazards.
Heck your speed
If you’re inexperienced with gravel roads, slow down. Take time to decide how fast you can go on gravel. Once you’re comfortable with your pace, keep a constant speed. If the pebbles get as wide as your tires, it’s time to slow down.
Watch out for curves
Even on well-traveled roads with lots of smooth tracks, gravel will be looser and piled up around turns. When approaching a curve, slow down, follow a smooth surface, is possible, and don’t lean into the curve as you would on a paved road.
Slow down for intersections
You should always stop for a stop sign or red light. Also, … click here to read further information.
