                                                    Uncaught

Sawamura kept tossing and turning in his bed. He was too excited about his date with Miyuki to sleep. It was rare that the two of them could spend time together just the two of them, what with practice and schoolwork and, what Miyuki called, “team management.” But tomorrow he had an entire day to spend with his boyfriend in the city! Sawamura couldn’t stop the grin that spread across his face and his whole body was buzzing with excitement. He glanced at the clock: 12:55am. If he ran some laps now, he just might tire himself out enough to get some sleep tonight. As quietly as he could with excess energy in his arms and legs, he snuck out of his room and headed out to the practice fields.

Sawamura still couldn’t believe that Miyuki Kazuya agreed to go out with him. The two of them had been getting closer as Sawamura trained hard to be the ace.  It was true that every time Miyuki gave him a compliment (or a lesser insult, coming from that jerk), Sawamura’s heart soared.  But it was in quieter, softer moments between them that Sawamura fell in love.  It was the patience under the snarky comments when Miyuki practiced with him and pushed him to further his own pitch. It was the way the other boy looked at him when they worked together to get a batter out.  It was a proud smirk or the solid weight of a mitt on his chest during a stressful game.  Sawamura had a lot of love in his life, from family, friends, teammates.  But none made him feel like this.  His heart felt safe in Miyuki’s hands and why wouldn’t it be?  Miyuki was the best catcher of his generation.

Sawamura had run at least seven laps with his tire (after making sure his name was still legible on the rubber) when Haruichi came by with a faint blush, asking to talk to him in the indoor practice hall.  Shoujo manga senses tingling, he agreed.

As soon as the door closed shut behind them, he slung a casual arm around his friends’ shoulders and asked, "So, what can the great Sawamura Eijun do for you, Harucchi?"

“Well," the other boy's face turned red, "it’s a bit personal."

"Oh ho!" he exclaimed, "is it about love?" Somehow, the other boy's face turned even redder and Sawamura heartily patted him on the back, "You have come to the right person! I’m an expert in all things love!”

Haruichi was looking anywhere but him as he said slowly, "It’s still a secret but Furuya-kun and I started dating."

Sawamura released Haruichi and leaned against the wall facing him, nodding encouragingly.

"Furuya-kun and I have been dating for a few weeks and we still haven't kissed yet. I don't know how to..." Haruichi’s voice trailed off and Sawamura swore he could feel heat radiating from his friend’s bright face.

“You want to kiss Furuya? Well, that’s easy.” Sawamura said with a laugh.

“Easy?”

“Yeah, when he starts to lean in really close, just close your eyes and lean forward and then bam! You’re kissing.”

“Umm," Haruichi began and Sawamura had a feeling that behind his bangs, his friend was looking at him with that mix of fond exasperation that he was used to receiving.

“It’s like trying to hit a ball, but with your mouth instead of you a bat,” Sawamura added helpfully.

“…” Haruichi was even more confused than when they started. “Eijun-kun, I don’t think I understand.”

“Argh, I don’t have my shoujo manga to show you!” Sawamura brows were furrowed in frustration and he made a move towards the door, “What if I went to get it? Can you stay here and wait for me?”

“Wait! You don’t need to go to that much trouble.”

“Then, you’ve just got to feel it!  In your heart!” he emphasized the last part with a hearty pat to his own chest.  

There was only got a confused and awkward silence in response.  Sawamura wracked his brain for ways to convey the kissing atmosphere he had read (and now experienced) so much about.  Unbidden, Sawamura remembered the first time Miyuki and he kissed.  It was a couple of weeks after Sawamura had given a romantic speech and confessed. Everyone else had left Miyuki’s room and the two of them had been poring over a baseball magazine on Miyuki’s bed. There was a strange quiet lull.  When he looked up, Miyuki was staring at him eyes that seemed to glow with a raw kind of intensity.  He was pretty sure he had forgotten how to breathe at that moment.

Yes, that was it.  

“I’ll show you how to do it,” Sawamura said out loud.  Something in his voice must have sounded serious because Haruichi simply nodded. He imagined what would happen if the roles were reversed that night and he had been the one to make the move instead — if he had been the first one to take the leap.  

If he was about to kiss Miyuki for the first time…  

In his mind’s eye, Sawamura could see his boyfriend in front of him, his expression serious as it often was when he was thinking about baseball tactics.  Sawamura met Haruichi’s gaze and crossed the short distance between them with purposeful steps.  He grabbed the other boy’s shirt with one hand and tilted Haruichi’s chin with the other, never breaking eye contact. Sawamura started to lean in but he stopped, several inches away.  He took a step back and a self-satisfied grin stretched across his face, breaking the tension in the air. “Like that!  That’s how you do it, Harucchi!”

Haruichi was flustered at the demonstration.  “That seems more like you or the captain’s style.”  He bit at his lower lip with uncertainty, “I’m not really sure I can pull that off.”

“Hmm, that’s true. That tanuki is kind of one of a kind,” Sawamura said with a fond laugh. “You try something. I’ll be Furuya.”

Now that Haruichi had some idea of what to convey, the two of them tried different ways for him to approach Furuya.  Sawamura played the role of the quiet and unwitting boyfriend and he made Haruichi giggle with his Furuya impression so no awkwardness ever lingered between them. Eventually, Haruichi had a plan (and several backups) that he was comfortable with.

Haruichi “Thanks for helping me, Eijun-kun.”

“No problem, Harucchi. You’re ready to kiss Furuya silly. Tell him if he doesn’t reciprocate then he doesn’t deserve to be the ace!” Sawamura started to get riled up as always when he talked about the ace position.

“Umm, what does that have anything to do with it?”

“Doesn’t matter! Kiss him like we planned! I’m sure he will like it!”

“Eijun-kun!” Haruichi motioned for the excited boy to lower his voice but there was a smile in his voice.

Sawamura gave him a cheeky grin and said at a decidedly loud whisper, “Sorry Harucchi. I was getting too fired up.”

“That’s okay,” Haruichi said with a giggle, “That’s just like you Eijun-kun.”

Haruichi bit at his lips absentmindedly as the two of them walked to the door, “Do you… do you really think it’ll be okay?”

“I’m positive,” said Sawamura but then his brows furrowed in consternation, “Though, I don’t know if I can help you with the next part.”

Haruichi turned beet red at the implications and he hurried through the door as if he wanted to avoid this particular topic of conversation. “I-I can handle that myself, Eijun-kun. Thanks again and goodnight!”

Sawamura followed him out and lifted a hand to wave at the other boy’s receding form, “You gotta tell me how it goes!” He grinned at the prospect of seeing Furuya off his game in practice. Maybe this time Furuya will be the one getting lectured!  

“My, my. What are you doing out at this hour, Sawamura?” a voice came from behind him and he jumped, startled.

He was about to open his mouth before he remembered his promise to keep this a secret from the others on the team. A flash of guilt went through him at the prospect of hiding something from Miyuki, but he had made a promise to a friend. He suddenly noticed the dark expression on the catcher’s face and he realized what Miyuki was thinking.

“It’s not what it looks like! I was just helping Harucchi—” Sawamura began.

“Amazing.”

That caught him off guard. “What-”

Miyuki’s jaw clenched and he looked as serious and angry now as he ever did in a game. “Amazing that you were stupid enough to cheat on your catcher. I guess you didn’t really want to be the ace, huh.”

Sawamura had a bad feeling about this, like when a bad pitch left his hand. He could hear himself get louder, “What? Of course I want to be the ace!  This isn’t what it looks like, Miyuki Kazuya!”

“Oh? Then what is it, hm?” Miyuki’s eyes were foreign as the cold gaze was turned on to him for the first time. Miyuki stepped forward, forcing him back. “You think I can’t tell when someone’s been kissed? Don’t lie to me, Sawamura. You are a thousand years too early for that.”

Sawamura was floored. What was happening? Why wasn’t anything connecting? His stomach dropped. This wasn’t just a bad pitch. This was an errant pitch flying from his hand straight towards the batter’s head. “W-What? Harucchi and I weren’t doing anything like that! You’ve got to believe me!”

“It’s over.”

What—? No-- what-- What’s he saying? Why won’t he listen? Sawamura was floundering. All he could see was the cold expression on his boyfriend’s face, like Sawamura was a stranger. He wasn’t even sure what he was saying anymore, his mouth driven only by desperation. Nothing he said seemed to make contact with Miyuki. Helpless, he watched as his catcher’s back got further and further away.

Miyuki, the best catcher of his year, had let Sawamura’s heart tumble to the ground.

22. Is there anything you regret writing? Not particularly about any fic, but I regret not finishing my JE fandom fic and some other fandoms made me leave some fics undone.

23. Name a fic you’ve written that you’re especially fond of & explain why you like it. For one shot, Living Proof. I think I captured a lot of things in that one shot and it gives an overall different perspective in SaiIno relationship. I have to say that it is the work I’m most proud of. And for multichaps, then Make My Heart Beat. I’ve always dreamed to inspire people through my writing so I’m happy that people got inspired by that Gruvia fic.

24. What fic do you desperately need to rewrite or edit? Make My Heart Beat. Too many grammar mistakes. Well, basically all of my fic though.
