Doumeki-sama, who hates humans, wants to see everything about the sacrificial girl. - By 柚木マチ (7/10)
Tumblr media
A short misunderstanding. A possessive, killer Demon God. No plot, just a sweet ending. Don't worry, be happy.
Doumeki is a greasy sentient pile of eyeballs. Kuchina is a healthy, happy sacrifice that already behaves like a happy housewife.
Tumblr media
They live like a couple already.
Tumblr media
Doumeki is a 10/10. A super polite, caring God who enjoys Kuchina's company. He doesn't think she will ever love him though. His handsome human form often breaks. His true self is pretty gross.
Tumblr media
He wants to kill the village that sacrificed her, but she doesn't seem interested in revenge.
Tumblr media
One day, quite suddenly, Kuchina decides to seduce him. He's overjoyed.
Tumblr media
So overjoyed that his human form kinda falls apart when he kisses her.
Tumblr media
After they become a couple he shops for her favorite foods because he's a sweetie.
Tumblr media
Doumeki is insecure, so he spies on Kuchina. Turns out that the village chief has been encouraging Kuchina to sleep with him, so he will protect the village.
He is deeply hurt, but he will not let Kuchina go. She is officially his wife. She cannot leave him.
Tumblr media
It's a misunderstanding. Kuchina has actually been crushing on him for a few years now. Yay mutual pining!
Doumeki's insecure side does make him a fun yandere though.

WIP Snippet Sunday
From the next Lure part, What you can’t bury.
🔪 🔪 🔪 🔪 🔪 🔪 🔪 🔪 🔪 🔪 🔪 🔪 🔪 🔪 🔪
"No, but I know you. Everyone knows Kaiba-sama's friend." The man flashed a sardonic grin. "I'm Tachibana, by the way."
Great. That meant he was a part of the Aoryu-kai. But what did he want with Jounouchi? First, it was Sugoroku, and now this guy. He hoped this wasn't becoming a pattern.
He stood and gave the seat a perfunctory wipe. "Alright, it's all yours then, Tachibana-san."
Swiftly, he scooped up his things. Next stop was the backroom office. Maybe he'd find Doumeki there.
"Wait."
Jounouchi paused and glanced over his shoulder, hoping it wasn't a mistake to stop.
"What do you say to a friendly bout, Jounouchi-kun?" Tachibana pointed to Jounouchi's worn boxing gloves. His eyes gleamed with open challenge.
Jounouchi weighed his options carefully. Normally, he wouldn't think twice. But Tachibana being a member of the Aoryu-kai complicated matters. How far up the food chain was this guy? Which lieutenant did he serve under? Daimon? Ota? Oshita? Times like this, Jounouchi wished he knew the nitty-gritty of Kaiba's organization better.
If Jounouchi lost, which seemed likely, how badly would that reflect on Kaiba? Or was it far worse to refuse Tachibana's challenge in the first place?

I Know You Very Well Indeed (Thanks)
Fandom: xxxHolic Rating: Gen (but CLAMP gen, so really easy to see ship undertones) Characters: Doumeki Shizuka and Watanuki Kimihiro Summary: Lunch was an unfortunate casualty, but luckily there's a substitute. Contains: N/A Word Count: ~700 AO3 Link
Doumeki was hungry. He was not pleased. He hadn’t planned on being hungry. He had asked Watanuki for a bento and while he had flailed and protested like usual, he quite obviously still made it. No, the problem today was that the bentos were an unfortunate casualty during this morning’s walk to school. That particular ayakashi was determined and reckless enough to go after Watanuki, even with Doumeki’s presence. He managed a shot, but before the arrow hit, it made one last attempt at Watanuki, hitting the bentos instead.
It was a waste. Doumeki hated wasting things. Still, there wasn’t anything he could do to salvage the food. Watanuki refused to stay there any longer regardless of the fact Doumeki was on alert and had his bow in hand. So, the two boys left very promptly and much less burdened. Once Watanuki had calmed down, he moaned about losing his “precious Himawari-chan’s” lunch and ran off, presumably to apologize profusely.
The bell had rung some minutes ago, leaving Doumeki alone in the classroom. He didn’t have money to buy something to eat, and he wasn’t sure it would even be worth it if he did. With that in mind, he really didn’t see the need to get up and find his two lunchmates. It was safe enough on school grounds that he didn’t have to worry about Watanuki. That one ayakashi aside, it was a normal, if annoying, day. Decision made, he reached for a book to pass the time.
Deep in thought as he was, it was no surprise Doumeki missed the sound of the classroom door opening and closing. What he couldn’t ignore was the scent wafting from that direction. It was the scent of a freshly baked treat, Watanuki’s, in fact. He abruptly stood up and in one swift motion placed the book on his desk and turned to face the door.
“Here! I, the great Watanuki-sama, have decided to take pity on you and let you have some of the extras from class!” He one handedly thrust a dish towards Doumeki, the cookies within it tumbling about wildly from the gesture. Doumeki took a few into his hands, eating them with abandon. Watanuki’s eye twitched. Doumeki couldn’t understand why; he wasn’t making a mess, these were good, and he was hungry. He reached for more and managed to finish another before the other boy started his customary ranting.
“Do you even taste anything!? How about a word of thanks?” The cookies shifted and the dish tipped precariously from his flailing motions. “All that work and no gratitude! I could be with Himawari-chan, but she’s busy with student council duties.” Watanuki wailed.
That didn’t sound right to Doumeki. As far as he knew there was nothing to do at the moment. Sneaking suspicion aside, it didn’t really matter. He plucked a few more cookies from the dish and focused on eating them, one finger in his ear as Watanuki continued. The cookies were still warm. Watanuki either didn’t know, or if he did he refused to acknowledge it and had adopted an ‘if I ignore it, it’s not true’ approach, but Doumeki knew that the home ec class didn’t meet until after lunch.
“Oi.” He cut Watanuki off.
“My name is not ‘Oi’, you bottomless pit! See if I ever deign to feed you again!”
“Thank the teacher for letting you leave early.” He caught the now empty dish as Watanuki suddenly froze, dropping it. He quickly put it down and covered his ears before Watanuki could recover.
Watanuki blanched for a few seconds, stunned by Doumeki’s words. “Wha-What are you talking about?!” Color rushed across his cheeks as his volume rose and his arms began to wave, far more animatedly than before. Clearly any concerns about the dish were gone from his mind. “Those were from class!”
Doumeki nodded noncommittally. “Ah.”
Watanuki bristled, offended by the obvious disbelief. “They were!” Before he could continue, the door to the classroom opened as people began to return. He glared at Doumeki, before glancing at the dish. He grabbed it and muttered an embarrassed “I’ve got to return this” before fleeing.
Used to Watanuki’s behavior by now, Doumeki went back to his seat and picked up his book again. While he wasn’t full, he was deeply satisfied. It wasn’t such a terrible day after all.

My Review of Laid-Back Camp
Tumblr media
(a.k.a. Yuru Camp)
How did I get into this anime? I’ve heard this was sort of a laid-back gem. You know, cute girls doing regular life things and have extraordinary times with beautiful scenery.
Tumblr media
Rin Shima is a school girl with a love of camping. Usually, she’ll be seen during the off-season near the base of Mount Fuji and all alone. Despite being alone, she seems to know what she’s doing and enjoys doing it. Probably because she comes from a family full of experienced campers!
Tumblr media
That silence however is broken when one night she comes across a lost girl who’s new to the area named Nadeshiko Kagamihara. After sharing a meal together and looking at the night sky, Nadeshiko was inspired to join an outdoor club at her new school.
Tumblr media
At the Outdoor Activities club, Nadeshiko meets Aoi and Chiaki, the only two members to the club. The club room is a baby classroom. But we won’t be spending time in there, outdoor activities means activities in the outdoors. While pitching a tent, Nadeshiko notices that Rin, the girl she met at the base of Mount Fuji goes to the same school. Now is Rin going to join the club and be more social? Rin is usually quiet and keeps to herself most of the time (with the exception of her friend Ena). It looks like Rin prefers the company of none than one on her camping experiences. But after having another encounter with Nadeshiko, it looks like Rin might turn her thoughts about solo camping around.
BETWEEN THE SUB AND THE DUB: This is licensed by Crunchyroll, but believe it or not, they decided not to dub this. Not going to question that for now and I am enjoying the cast a lot. Here’s what you might recognize these folks from.
*Rin is played by Nao Touyama (known for Koga on Bunny Girl Senpai, Nii-chan on Blue Exorcist, Chitoge on Nisekoi, Tsubaki on Oresuki, Akira on Kono Oto Tomare, and Momo on Ai Tenchi Muyo)
*Nadeshiko is played by Yumiri Hanamori (known for Hayasaka on Kaguya-sama, Sorawo on Otherside Picnic, Hinaki on Demon Slayer, Asahi on Happy Sugar Life, and Doumeki on Eizouken)
*Aoi is played by Aki Toyosaki (known for Rin on Fruits Basket 2019, Momo on To Love Ru, Uiharu on Railgun/Index, Yunyun on Konosuba, Yui on K-ON, Suu on Shugo Chara, and Aoi on Beelzebub)
*Chiaki is played by Sayuri Hara (known for Luna on Konosuba, Reimi on Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure Pt. 4, and Mio on Idolm@ster: Cinderella Girls)
*Ena is played by Rie Takahashi (known for Emilia on Re:Zero, Megumin on Konosuba, Mash on Fate/Grand Order, and Sumi on Rent-A-Girlfriend)
Tumblr media
ENDING TO SEASON ONE: The girls of the Outdoor Activities club are planning on a camping trip for the Christmas holiday. Many of these adventures usually consisted of between 1-3 people. But now it’s going to be Nadeshiko, Aoi, Chiaki, Ena, and now their new advisor to the club. Throughout this season, we learned different things involving camping, money management, what’s more durable in the winter season, and so on. At this point, just about everyone in this group has experienced the winter camping experience at least once (except Ena who hates camping in the cold weather). So is it possible for the girls to have a great experience while doing everything they want to do and come prepared for anything that is to happen in the terrain? Let’s see what happens!
Oh, I suppose I should talk about Rin. Slowly but surely, she seems to be opening up more and more to the idea of camping with friends. During a solo expedition, Rin ran into several tough obstacles, but was able to get out of it with help from Chiaki and Nadeshiko.
Tumblr media
I’m not saying she’s fully warmed up to the idea of camping with friends, but she does agree to join Nadeshiko and the rest on their Christmas camping trip. The camping trip actually went well. No major hiccups or anything like that. I mean aside from their teacher getting shit-faced in front of the kiddies. At least she didn’t tell the kids about the birds and the bees like in Azumanga Daioh. But I digress!
Tumblr media
If you’re looking for something action-packed, there is none of that. It’s quite campy!
Although we do get an imagination of the girls 10 years from now, this is a callback to the opening sequence with a flying camping tent! After the trip, the girls plan on what to do for New Years. And out of nowhere, Nadeshiko gets a part-time job. As we all know, camping can get expensive when there’s so many gadgets one wants to purchase for a trip. At least this anime shows some young adult responsibilities.
We end this season with Nadeshiko running into Rin while solo camping.
MINI-SPECIALS: After season one, there were 3 small specials that would come out with DVD releases. The special I wanted to bring up is the 3rd one where the girls are on a plane heading to Australia for summer camping (because when it’s winter in Japan, it’s summer in Australia).
Tumblr media
The girls end up parachuting out of the plane when they all thought they were going to crash and land on a deserted island. Did their adventure on the deserted island really happen or was it just a dream? Because I seriously can’t get over 5 high school girls jumping to the conclusion that they are going to crash in an airplane and have to jump out of a plane.
Tumblr media
SEASON TWO: Before we continue with the cute group going camping, we get a flashback of Rin’s very first time camping on her own. Yeah, despite her grandfather’s wisdom in the woods and her parents know-how, she was a bit of a noob. Hey, aren’t we all when it’s our first time going solo?
As for the real start, we begin exactly where we left off after the Christmas holiday and right to New Years. Nadeshiko started her new part-time job so she’ll have some spending money to go camping. Aoi and her little sister are going to do their own thing for the holiday. Rin’s gonna go solo camping as usual. Chiaki is stuck at work because a lot of people drink for the New Year and she works in a liquor store. And Ena is going to be somewhere warm as she hates cold weather.
Despite Nadeshiko becoming a working girl throughout the second season, we still see plenty of sites and many different travel buddies hooking up to go camping.
Tumblr media
END OF SEASON TWO: This has been an eventful time for the girls. Chiaki, Ena, and Aoi went on a camping trip of their own and it almost ended very badly. That’s a big lesson for you all. Always inform at least one person where you’re going and always prepare for the weather. Temperatures can drop drastically at night depending on where you are!
Tumblr media
Nadeshiko on the other hand found great success in her solo camping trip. Despite Rin and even Nadeshiko’s sister severely worried. When they spied on her, they noticed everything was going according to plan. Okay, it’s now March and everyone is done with exams, let’s have a several day excursion to Izu! This area is famous for geo-spots worthy of seeing at least once in your life. Toba-sensei will rent a mini van, take all the kids (minus Rin, but add Aoi’s sister), and remain sober at the most important time.
That might be asking a lot because Sensei loves booze!
Tumblr media
Always remember to never drink and drive.
This trip to Izu also had an ulterior motive for some of the girls. As it turns out, both Aoi and Nadeshiko have the same birthday and the date is during this trip. So Rin, Ena, and Chiaki were planning a big dinner to celebrate. Despite Nadeshiko and Aoi knowing about the surprise prior to the actual surprise, they still had a fun time.
Tumblr media
This was actually a very successful trip all around as the girls were able to see many geo-spots, got to go to hot springs, see rare animals, and just have a fun time all the way around. Just an enjoyable romp!
This was an enjoyable series. I know there’s no action or romance or mystery, it’s just some high school girls enjoying the great outdoors and camping. Nothing wrong with just keeping it simple! Watching this almost makes me want to give camping another chance. I know it’s been a good two decades since my last outing, but who knows. Plus I live in a different territory than I did back then so I might feel adventurous and want to do it. My state has a lot of places to do so. That’s what anime does to us, it inspires people to try something new or rediscover something you did long ago. Laid Back Camp just might be one of those animes. Again, I cannot stress this enough. There is no action adventure. No one hooks up. You notice how I just breezed through this review? That’s because there’s no ship to speak of.
Tumblr media
If you are looking for love in this anime, there is none. Only more campy!
But sticking to the main story of five girls who like to explore the great outdoors without any kind of ulterior motive in mind is fine. It keeps the story safe and we all might learn something from it. And I’m quite interested to know where the story will lead us next as I think there are plans on there being a Laid Back Camp movie. We could finally see the girls camping during summer without me wondering if it was a dream or not.
If you just want a chill-lax anime about cute girls going camping, this is your anime. Crunchyroll has both seasons available for streaming.
Okay, next Amazon, Crunchyroll, or Netflix exclusive anime! Please be a good one!
Tumblr media
Tokyo Revengers? Okay, I guess I’m jumping on this bandwagon.

BLCD Review: Saezuru 6
Tumblr media
Title: Saezuru Tori wa Habatakanai 6 (囀る鳥は羽ばたかない 6)
Release Date: 2020/02/21
Author/Artist: Yoneda Kou
Cast:
Hatano Wataru x Shingaki Tarusuke
Yasumoto Hiroki
Ookawa Tooru
Takase Akimitsu
Okitsu Kazuyuki
Satou Takuya
Miyake Takahiro
Synopsis: Adaptation of the 6th volume of the series of the same name.
Review Proper
Tumblr media
That's it. That’s the review. Also, I miss you, Qinni.
No, but seriously, the instant the bgm started in track 1, I was already in tears. Volume 6 was hands down the most painful and nerve-wracking volume out of the whole series so far, and it has many of the most iconic and painful lines ever said by Yashiro, so I was so scared of listening to this even though I’ve had it for a while now. Needless to say, it completely broke me as Frontier Works came at me with another masterpiece. From the pacing, to the voice work, to the sound direction, and the accuracy, Frontier Works has, yet again, hit every mark. But well, Yoneda Kou’s always in good hands as all of her BLCDs were adapted beautifully.
Speaking of beauty, let’s move on to the beautiful, beautiful voice work.
Man, Shingaki Tarusuke never fails to emulate whatever feelings Yashiro and Yoneda Kou wanted to convey in the manga. It’s no wonder that Waccha’s Doumeki fell hard for Shingaki’s Yashiro. His Yashiro is easily one of the best and most iconic performances of the BLCD world of all time. Did you know that Saezuru's BLCDs almost always place 2nd in chil-chil's awards and that Shingaki is always in the top ten? We have to stan! 😩 If they didn’t bring him in to do Yashiro for the movie, then I’m sure that there would’ve been protests. You just have to give it to Shingaki Tarusuke and Okitsu for handling these types of emotional roles. Side note, isn’t it funny how Nanahara’s always chasing Yashiro’s ass considering that Okitsu has never topped Shingaki so far? 😂 Speaking of emotional roles, I just want to remind everyone that Shingaki and Okitsu did team up for Life Senjou. *war flashbacks*
As for Hatano Wataru—this is how it’s done, boys! Waccha is one of our gen 1 whale lords that can go even lower without ever sounding flat. I don’t know how he does it and which part of his respiratory system he uses to do it, but despite how low pitched his Doumeki is, it still has a sharpness to it that keeps his voice clear and light! Waccha really has such a broad range. His Fuwa-san in Memento Scarlet and Doumeki here are almost like polar opposites in pitch and tone. Ugh. Veterans. It’s kind of funny knowing that both Shingaki and SatoTaku is in this BLCD as well considering what went down in Kanawanu Koi and Memento Scarlet. 😂
The rest of the cast also delivered. Mind you, Saezuru has a lot of cast members, but majority of them are veterans. Volume 6 has almost all of the cast of the series present sans Ryuuzaki (Miyake Kenta), Kuga (Ono Yuuki), and Kurobane-san (Kanehira Yamamoto). KUROBANE-SANNNNN 😭😭😭. I lost it when Misumi-san called his name out when he visited his grave. The sheer emotion Ookawa Tooru poured into that one line—THAT HIRATA MOTHERFUCKER GOT WHAT HE DESERVED. Sasuga veteran-sama. No expense was spared for the voice work and sound direction as it should be.
I know I said that I wouldn’t make a review for Saezuru, but since Hirata’s case has been wrapped up, I think that it was about high time everybody got the recognition that they deserve (especially Shingaki and Waccha). Man, I just love Yoneda Kou and Saezuru in general. I know a lot of people feel that it’s too dragged out and some already find it boring, but Saezuru’s just hits different for me. The beauty, tragedy, and madness makes this work so captivating to me that I will never tire of waiting for the next chapters to come out. Only Yoneda Kou knows how this will end, but I’m sure as hell that I’m sticking around to see it.
It goes without saying that I highly recommend everyone to listen to 6 and Saezuru as whole especially if you’re a fan. Despite how complex the dialogue is, catching up with the BLCD is easy. Plus, there aren’t any major additions and cut outs from the original dialogues. If you haven’t read the manga, but are interested in it, I would suggest listening to the BLCD while you’re at it because it helps you distinguish between the characters (since the VAs voices are distinct from one another). If you want more serious yakuza/police BLCDs, then give Yoneda Kou’s Don’t Stay Gold (Yasumoto Hiroki x Ono Yuuki) and NightS (Ono Yuuki x Nojima Hirofumi) and drum roll please...Natsume Kazuki’s MODS (Yashiro Taku x Saitou Souma) and Nights Before Night (Ono Yuuki & Morikawa Toshiyuki x Nojima Hirofumi) a try! WAIT. ARE YOU TELLING ME ONO YUUKI IS IN ALL OF THOSE AND THAT NIGHTS AND NIGHTS BEFORE NIGHT HAD THE SAME CASTING???? ARE YOU A BANCHOU, SIR?!

Ship Tag Game
Tagged by: @dreaming-fireflies Thank you for the tag!! \(≧▽≦)/
First ship you ever read fic for: I actually can’t remember 0.0!!! It’s either for Kyo/Tohru [Fruits Basket], Sakura/Shaoran [CCS] or Kyoko/Ren [Skip Beat!]
First ship you ever wrote fic for: Viktuuri [Viktor/Yuuri – YOI] ehehhehe. It’s taken me YEARS to get around to write fic lool.
Ship you write the most now: Viktuuri [I’m a fledgling of an author I’m still taking my time in spreading my wings]
Ship you read the most now: Klance [Keith/Lance – Voltron] and Viktuuri of course!
Newest ship: SO many actually – and all from Voltron because I just finished binging all of it and am swirling in the fandom pool. So Keith/Lance, Matt/Shiro, Pidge/Lance, Allura/Lotor.
Rare ship you want to read more of: Hmmm……. Oh oh Minami/Plisetsky (YOI) because they’re a ship I love that’s not so common in the fandom. Can’t think of any other ones at the moment >.<
Your taboo ship: Tom Riddle/Harry Potter (it just sounds wrong to me) I can never ship them BUT I appreciate the fan works that come out for them. Mainly Festivite’s comic with a YOIxHP cross theme got me appreciating the fans for the ship but not the ship itself. I know there are others but, again, they’re not coming to mind when I need them. Also I think there’s an All Might/Deku [Boku no Hero Academia] ship out there that I cannot imagine at all - to me it feels so wrong.
They never met in canon ship: Phichit/Seung-gil (YOI). They are such a cute ship ^.^
Your unexpected ship: Bakugo/Kirishima [BNHA]. Mainly because I never thought that I would like Bakugo enough to ship him with someone (oopsies >.<)
The ship you always forget to give love to: A whole ton of ships across all platforms. Because they all deserve love even when completed. But even so some of them are:
Zuko/Katara [Avatar The Last Airbender]
Watanuki/Doumeki [xxxHOLiC]
Ren/Ninako [Strobe Edge]
Natsume/Mikan [Gakuen Alice]
Ship your OC with a canon character (if applicable): HMMMMM…. I can’t. I have so many OCs but I can’t think of someone I can ship them with suitably right now cause I’ve shipped them so heavily with my other OC’s.
A ship you’re embarrassed to ship: None. I will broadcast all of my ships till the end of time.
Your most romantic ship: Tomoya/Nagisa [Clannad]. THEY’RE SO SOFT I LOVE THEM TO BITS.
Your sexiest ship: I have so many I consider sexy but honestly, they’re probably more hot. Misaki/Usui [Kaichou wa Maid Sama] were like my ultimate definition of sexy because both of them were (I was a child). Kyoko/Ren [Skip Beat!] can be so sexy when they want to be. Kabakura/Koyanagi [Wotaku ni Koi wa Muzukashii] are another.
Your most tragic ship: Jintan/Menma [Ano Hana no Namae wa Bokutachi wa Mada Shiranai]. SO TRAGIC WTF. Also Pete/Tazusa [Ginban Kaleidoscope] I cried so much when I saw how they ended up.
A ship you want more content for: Loads actually. Makoto/Haru (Free!!) (I KNOW there’s lots its just… I’m greedy ><), Minami/Plisetsky (YOI),  Momose/Nifuji and Koyanagi/Kabakura [Wotaku ni Koi wa Muzukashii], Ryoma/Sakuno (Prince of Tennis) [I used to go crazy trying to find something on them, I still think that they’re quite a popular ship], and more honestly. I’ll just eagerly lap up anything I find on a ship and keep wanting more. *sighs*
Tagging: @porkcutletbowltrash, @savedbythenotepad, @katzuyas, @iwritebetterthanispeak, @peasantaries and anyone else who wants to give this a try!

My Review of Otherside Picnic
Tumblr media
How did I get into this anime? Every now and then, I’ll take advice from one of my close online friends and pick a franchise she’s been hooked on. I mean, she did get me into Azumanga Daioh, Love Live, and the Railgun series…Eh…
Tumblr media
This series has potential lesbians, doesn’t it?
Tumblr media
Sorawo Kamikoshi is alone in a strange, new world. No one else inhabits the area except for these paranormal creatures (which she calls “Wiggle Waggles”). Sorawo almost ends up drowning in the first scene of the series premier until she was saved by a young girl named Toriko Nishina. Toriko seems to have some experience with this place as she is heavily armed in salt and ammo. After her friend Satsuki disappeared from this place, Toriko has made it her mission to find her. So you’d think she’d be totally serious. But in the real world, this gun-slinging gal is a curious, silly girl. After that first encounter with Sorawo, Toriko has taken an interest in her and either wants to hang out or go to the “Otherside” with her.

But it wasn’t until their second voyage to the otherside where these girls end up with life-altering changes to their bodies. Sorawo ended up staring directly at the wiggle waggle causing madness and mysterious blue gunk appearing around her eyes. But Toriko was there to swat it all away. Because of that incident, Sorawo’s right eyeball has a blue tint to it and Toriko’s left hand has a translucent feel to it. These two anomalies have proven to be beneficial to the girls when their lives are in danger while on the otherside.
BETWEEN THE SUB AND THE DUB: FUNimation owns this here in the states. Now according to my friend who is hooked on everything Otherside Picnic, she’s noticed a lot of changes from FUNimation’s translations. This is certain nitpicky things that I’m usually thrown off by like changing the spelling of main characters or changing translations from the original source material. And FUNimation is guilty of doing both on a regular basis (and doing a lot worse). Yeah, they’ve been given authority to screw around with translations and input whatever they damn-well want. When they do this, it doesn’t end well with the audience. By the way, I’m spelling “Sorawo” like this. I’m actually used to seeing it like that and FUNimation subtitles be damned. Amazingly, no dub to this! I’m thinking they’ll do it one of these days. Here’s what you might recognize these folks from.
*Sorawo is played by Yumiri Hanamori (known for Hayasaka on Kaguya-sama, Asahi on Happy Sugar Life, Doumeki on Keep Your Hands Off Eizoken, and Miza on Tokyo Ghoul :re)
*Toriko is played by Ai Kayano (known for Kanae on Demon Slayer, Itsuwa on Index, Alice on SAO: Alicization, Menma on Anohana, Ryouko on Food Wars, Mayaka on Hyouka, and Anna on The Promised Neverland)
SHIPPING: So think of this as your wet dream of Velma and Daphnie from Scooby Doo getting into a relationship. You’re welcome!

In this corner, we’ve got Toriko. Sure she seems interested in Sorawo. But is it she finds her interesting romantically or just interesting human wise? Plus, we’ve got this thing with the never-seen character named Satsuki. Toriko always talks about her and I’m wondering what’s up with their past. Then you have Sorawo! She has some interesting thinking in her brain and these monologues in her brain that make us think, yeah she wants to get in this girls skirt and scissor ‘till the break of dawn.
Tumblr media
Yeah, I’m rooting for this ship to work. It’s just that during episode 9 when Toriko was mentioning Sorawo’s hair and how it’s getting long, I can’t help but think Toriko is trying to turn Sorawo into Satsuki. Yeah and I suppose Sorawo noticed that when someone ends up mentioning that fact.
Once again, anime version isn’t going to give us anything more than speculation when it comes to these relationships. If I wasn’t so swamped with other mangas, I would pick this up to see if there’s any development between Sorawo and Toriko or if Satsuki mucks things up from beyond the beyond.
ENDING: Throughout this anime, you find yourself asking a myriad of questions.
Where the hell is Satsuki?
Did Toriko have a relationship with Satsuki?
What happened to those U.S. soldiers Sorawo and Toriko left in the middle of the season?
Why are these supernatural things happening in the most random places in the real world now?
Tumblr media
Seriously, where the fuck is Satsuki?
We…are going to go with the third question. So we’re going back to that mysterious dead-spot those U.S. soldiers were left at. Believe it or not, Sorawo forgot all about those soldiers until Toriko brought it up. I mean, it was a scary situation where the soldiers really didn’t know if they could trust two girls that pop out of nowhere in the Otherside. And the situation almost turned deadly! But in this rescue mission, the soldiers seemed trusting this time.

Despite Sorawo’s eye and Toriko’s hand, they accepted the fact that those two anomalies will lead them to freedom from the Otherside. And after a big fight against a scary wiggle waggle that resembles…Satsuki(?) everyone was able to make it out of the Otherside and back to the real world. Actually, Toriko and Sorawo didn’t even mention Satsuki’s name during this showdown so I’ll drop it for now.
We have an extra several minutes after the girls save the U.S. soldiers. Why don’t we have Toriko and Sorawo go back to the spot where they first met each other? We actually get a touching moment between the two girls. Toriko reveals her feelings about what it was like after Satsuki disappeared and how it’s changed since the three months after hanging out with Sorawo. As for Sorawo, she likes hanging with Toriko despite always longing to be alone.

This was definitely a trip of an anime. And I would love to see more if it’s popular enough to warrant a second season or an OVA. I know the novel and manga are still in publication so there are more stories to come from Otherside Picnic. I myself thought the anime was just okay. There’s so much more I wished was covered. And by cover, I mean by what I’m to assume is to happen next because I have never picked up the manga or novel. But I would like to believe that there’s a deeper connection between Toriko and Sorawo further down in the story.
And what about Satsuki?! She’s mentioned constantly throughout the series and we don’t really get a clear answer of how she disappeard, why she disappeared, and if she’s even alive. Now it could be that Satsuki’s mystery is still going on in the manga and novel, so I should drop it for now and be thankful the anime didn’t divert from the original source material.
Tumblr media
But I will continue making the Kozakura face of disapproval until we get some sort of conclusion with the Satsuki mystery.
Unfortunately, I believe this series will just be a one-and-done kind of series. The scores I see from the audience are meh at best. I guess you can say it was a curse that Otherside Picnic was airing in the same season as an anime like Wonder Egg Priority that people kinda took to the latter. But I’ll hold out hope because I like to see the end to things no matter how confusing, meh, or WTF it is.
If you would like to watch Otherside Picnic, FUNimation has all 12 episodes available.
