All Art Is Political | Eisen Bernard Bernardo

Featured recent works from Philippines-based graphic artist and favorite of ours, Eisen Bernard Bernardo. 

It is said that “all art is political.” Throughout our history, art has become a venue of people to communicate ideas including political thoughts. Today, there are lots of issues confronting our society such as government reforms, elections, gender and equality, peace and order, and a lot more.

By juxtaposing magazine covers and classical artworks, I was able to express my feeling about various political and social issues without being overtly biased. It really helped me release my frustrations to the all the depressing news everyday. Through these digital collages, I was able to examine the dynamics of media, art, and history, and how these things are deeply connected to our political and social condition.

Eisen Bernard

Eisen Bernardo is a Filipino graphic artist and illustrator of children's books. He is famous for his magazine multimedia collages, album covers, and classical sculptures.

Eisen bernard bernardo focused on his 'mag+art' concept, a series of magazine covers and mash-ups of classical artwork. The Filipino graphic artist is now working on an offshoot of the album+art project, which has the record sleeves of some of the world's most recognised singers and performing artists added to fine painted works of art. He  took the opportunity to create a collection of visual collages featuring some famous singers' studio album covers today.

Each album cover is carefully paired with compositions by famous painters, including Vincent van Gogh and Grant Wood. In order to perfectly mesh with their new background, the body parts and portraits of david bowie, lady gaga, britney spears and gwen stefani are meticulously and digitally put on the paintings to name only a couple. The mash-ups create a quirky and surprising union of modern and classical imagery, while retaining the overall theme.

I think the way is portrays dystopia is because of the mix of the quirky covers with the classical images. The mix creates that eerie and weird sense.

MEET EISEN BERNARD BERNARDO, THE MASTERMIND BEHIND “ALBUM+ART” Miss Rosen for Crave Online

Artist Eisen Bernard Bernardo is the mastermind “Album+Art,” a brilliant series of visual mash-ups that pair classic pop music albums with classical paintings to breathtaking effect. This is fourth installment of the “+Art” project, which started in 2009 with “Mag+Art,” a series pairing magazine covers with paintings that went viral in 2014. The following year, a follower challenged Bernardo to use album covers instead of magazines, and the result has thrilled people around the world.

The pairings reveal the eye of an expert with a vast vocabulary of both pop music iconography and art historical references. “I’m fond of homage, similarities and references in movies, music, and other art forms. I felt that album covers (like other contemporary artforms) were inspired directly (and/or indirectly) by classical paintings. I wanted to compare and contrast modern and classical aesthetics,” Bernardo explains.
