I was gonna make this post way way earlier but I forgot lol but Uhm
I have played through the splatoon 2 story fully and am replaying it (for a future post bc a lot of the dialogue is rlly funny) and honestly while I absolutely loved it it makes me even sadder that splat 2’s story mode was kinda tossed aside (for valid reasons ofc) because it’s so Cool.
Excluding the gameplay, I think they did marie so well, because she sells the desperation of someone who’s got nobody she knows by her side. While she of course keeps the sassy attitude of sneak dissing her best friends (agent 3) and also telekinetically telling you to fuck off if you talk to her too much it’s very clear she genuinely cares so much about agent 4 and is so grateful they’re doing what they do.

It’s like heavily emphasized multiple times that Marie could not be more grateful for 4’s help in retrieving not just the zapfish but also her cousin.
But then revealing that 4 knew about Callie the WHOLE TIME (I have a lot to say about this part but it’s mostly hc so) which is so KIND OF THEM???? this random woman recruits them into a secret military agency and hides the fact she rlly misses her cousin but they help anyway bc they WANT TO. (They didn’t even know either of them were famous btw) Marie shows a lot of gratitude toward 4 ESPECIALLY after the big reveal.
(You could make arguments for 3 being similar bc an old kook made them do it but this isn’t about them..)

And it’s not just being grateful for the one time, she genuinely enjoys 4’s company and wants to be better friends with them and chat after the zapfish and Callie are saved 😭😭😭

It’s so cute too, because 100%ing the game and even just being a little nosy is something that Marie picks up on, and remembers way later in the game. (More abt this later)

Speaking of said soldier! I think the way they characterized 4 via the actual gameplay rather than art/statements/whatever is so cool
4 doesn’t have many illustrations besides the chaos splatfest and that one group photo where they’re being funky in the corner (and the apartment) but I feel like the reason for that is the fact that a lot of Marie’s dialogue as well as how splatoon 2’s hero mode is structured/designed speaks a lot about how they wanted to represent 4.
From a realistic standpoint, of course splatoon 2’s story mode has to be more creative both prompt wise and secret wise. But it feels like the reason its that way is because both 4 and Marie are separate types of people from Craig and 3.
The bosses help a lot with this too, being more gimmicky and weird (subtracting stamp.) Octo shower and samurai being bosses where you have to either react well or change your positioning to effectively beat them. (Octo shower is my fave btw I loved fighting it the first time)
The level design also shines in this aspect because if I’m honest I remember none of the splat 1 levels significantly besides the few octoling ones. Splatoon 2’s levels are very detailed (and also insanely pretty) and have some rlly fun puzzles in a handful of them and even the more fast ones are a blast to play through
And then all the little extras (sardiniums and scrolls alike) are hidden so well and you usually have to go out of your way to find them and even the secrets that aren’t either of those things have substance
Small note, a lot of extras are also made so that it flows well with the levels design (like the first dualie request mission) which is also extremely fucking cool.
the way marie touches on those little discoveries is so smart too because it (as I said before) characterizes 4 as someone who loves to look for things even if it’s on a whim especially since the sunken scrolls in the game are so much harder to find than in splat1.

And the fact that unlike splat 1, you can (technically) 800% the game by playing EVERY SINGLE LEVEL WITH EVER SINGLE WEAPON TYPE. to me it feels like it deepens the fact that 4 likes to be really thorough. marie goes “you have a problem.” When you break like two hidden egg crates in this one level and it’s so great.

I love what they’ve done with 4, whether it was intentional or I’m over-analytical.
Nothing gets past them, looking in every nook and cranny whether or not there’s secrets to be found. They’re too nosy and thorough and they like to be around marie after completing missions, they don’t know who the squid sisters are, hate balloons, may or may not be ok, have impulsive secret finding, partake in many extracurriculars, can be needy at times, go with the flow and they apparently smell better than agent 3.

#rat rambles#splat posting#predictably I adore frye 😔#also Im a lil frustrated with the fanbase gendering them all so quickly but Ill get more ranty abt that another time lol#ANYWAYS harmony got promoted to in game npc good for her!!#Im so obsessed with her modle she is so <3#I love how much thought and care just oozes out of the characters and art design as usual#Im very interested in this updated rainmaker and the new tripple splatfest#Im not sure if having a checkpoint system is gonna do rainmaker any favors but it depends on how theyre usef I think#as for tripple splatfest I am very excited abt the ideas that come from thar#my gut was to go team rock for the first onw since thats my go to but also after the diologue I kinda wanna side with frye 😔#as for the new weapon announced its definitely interesting but I definitely think itll need some work throughout updates#it just seems a bit underwhelming rn thanks to its severe lack of ink coverage#idk though well have to wait and see for the games release#also while Im a smidge disapointed that some splat 2 specials are returning Im just glad that ink armor abd stingray are dead fkfbdjfh#also the ticket system for weapons is certainly interesting. idk how well itll work in execution but I like the idea of being able to get#weapons youre not high enough level for yet#I am SO happy abt the returning splat one stages especially mahimahi resort I actually started happy stimming so hard I LOVE that stage#I dont have many thoughts on the new stages so far but they definitely look better than the splat 2 stages to me so far!!#all in all I am so fucking excited for splat 3 I am hopeful that itll be good

Splatoon was the first Nintendo game to push me out of my comfort zone of single player games, and with the closure of it's servers I wanted to draw a tribute to a game that really means a lot to me.
Some long rambles about the game under the cut.
When I first played the Global Testfire I was 15, and the only mutliplayer games I played were with friends in the same room.
Splatoon was also the first shooter I ever picked up, as I always liked bright colours over more realistic graphics in my games, and back then the only shooters I knew about were Halo(and that was only really a name to me!) and the CoD games.
Any worries I had about being bad quickly vanished as the sheer vibe of chaotic fun the game had, particularly when no one had played it before, got rid of any worries, and all I remember is having fun. And choosing to play as the guy instead of the girl for the first time, solely becuase I wanted a ponytail like in real life(I would continue to use the guy through the series as a tradition, a contrast to what I saw most people online doing).
When the game came out I binged the single player, and vividly remember the first time I fought DJ Octavio, and the first time I heard Calamari Inkantation. If ever a game was to convince me that a song could irreversibly change your life, it was Splatoon. Because to teenage me, in that moment, with Calamari Inkantation playing in the background while I fought an octupus DJ, it did.
It gave me terminal brainworms for this series. And here I am, 8 yrs later. Older and more tired, been through some shit, had some good times, tried, succeeded and failed in things throughout the years.
I've always been grateful that they made the decision for the player character from 1 to return, everytime they've shown up it's felt a bit like seeing an old friend, especially since as the games time skips have always had them close to my age(which probably helped my attachement back in the first game). So hi Three, can't believe we both probably pay taxes now.
I have the original two Inkling Amiibos, in a collection that is slowly building, I'm still attached to Marie, and yes I was on her team for the Final Splatfest.
I cried when it was over, just like I did in 2's Final Fest(I was team chaos, two for two baby!) and will probably do so for 3's as well. Something about this series just makes me super attached to it's world and characters.
So booyah Splatoon, my final online game of yours was well and truly years ago, but I replayed story mode to share you with a friend recently, and I think I'll refight Octavio tonight in honour of the good times.
You encouraged me to try out games I wouldn't have otherwise(hello Overwatch and Deep Rock Galactic), and outlasted one of the other major games of my teenage years(...Overwatch 1 I miss you). So thank you for that.
I'll miss Squid Jump, Inkstrike, the og kit for the NZap 89(why does it's new one not vibe with me ;-;), the Squid Sister's broadcasts and the more saturated colours. At least I can always return to the Plaza in 3, and that Spyke isn't dead like I was concerned he was when 3 released, and see the Squid Sisters perform during Splatfests again.
I have so much more to say in my heart about you but no more ways to word it.
You've been a fantastic game, and will always be a treasured experience that I am grateful to have been a apart of from the very beginning.
Now bring back Moray Towers in 3 damn it! It's in 2 but I DON'T WANT TO LOSE MY FAVOURITE STAGE IF IT"S NOT IN 4.

Talking about Side Order and... Marina. (SPOILERS AHEAD!!!!)
You know, i really enjoyed Side Order, like it wasn't perfect or anything but i had such a blast with it and if they continue to expand on it we could have something REALLY amazing. My reaction to the GOD DAMN TUTORIAL BOSS GOT ME HYPERVENTILATING! IM NOT JOKING! IT WAS SO EXCITING AND SHOCKING!!! THE FINAL BOSS WAS INCREDIBLE TOO! I was singing along to Spectrum Obligato and WHEN THEY BROUGHT IN THE STUFF FROM THE LIVE CONCERT VERSION OF EBB AND FLOW MY JAW DROPPED!!!
However i gotta admit, the story could have been better, what was the deal with the Octoling engineers Marina was talking about? That goes completely nowhere and i thought it was gonna build to something with the repeat playthroughs of the final boss.
And of course, the biggest missed opportunity in my opinion, Marina Agitando.

Now look, i wanna say right off the bat, the design is excellent, it was so smart to bring back her Order outfit and make her into a giant abomination that moves in such a weird way that makes you feel uncomfortable. When i saw her for the very first time when you enter the room, i stood there for at least a solid minute in complete disbelief and shock seeing a giant Marina in some octopus tentacle heart thingy that beats and pumps with the music. The song that plays too "Unconscience" is such a BANGER and honestly it rivals Octo Callie's Bomb Rush Blush remix in my opinion.
The build up for this was pretty good too, seeing Marina say "help me" before she was knocked unconscious and then possessed by Overlorder BROKE ME! I was like "OH NO! ITS HAPPENING AGAIN! NOT MARINA!!" The build up to the 10th floor was so anxiety inducing because you know in the back of your mind that Marina is gonna fight you but you don't know what it's gonna look like, if you were there since Splatoon 2 and have watched Pearl and Marina since the beginning then this build up is even more anxiety inducing and its pretty damn good. And once you free Marina she feels so sorry about what happened and helps you out to put things right, heck she goes through a small character arc of embracing chaos.... but... i have to say...
It is unfortunately not executed that well or with any depth in my opinion because they repeated the whole thing of "oh no a character we know is evil because of (quote on quote) mind control!!!! oh noooo!!" Which is a tired trope in this series that needs to stop or else I'm gonna get REALLYYYYYY pissed off.

I've done enough ranting about Callie's villain arc and how that has been misinterpreted and stuff, but for Marina, i really wish they didn't do the whole "oh no a character is evil because of an evil character oh nooo!! we gotta save them!!" thing again and i wish Marina was more of a villain with a sad motivation for her actions. As much as its cute to see Pearl and Marina act all flirty with each other in Side Order, it kinda ruins the mysterious and dark tone of the story that was teased from the trailers and the tutorial in my opinion. Everything is also explained so quickly early on which really sucks. I really wish Marina was actually conscious throughout her time as Marina Agitando and most of it should have been her fault. She does blame herself for creating Overlorder but it's kinda brushed aside quickly and Marina ends up being totally fine and free of guilt. There isn't enough depth to it which is so lame and a missed opportunity.
Marina is flawed, she makes mistakes and acts emotional and angry sometimes. We have seen a side of Marina where she snaps at Pearl when she loses Splatfests and has shown signs that she still hasn't recovered from her time before she met Pearl.

She picked team Order because she was genuinely scared that her new life would fall apart and she doesn't wanna lose the people (especially Pearl) that she's met and grown to love. Marina is also heavily theorized to be on the autism spectrum and as someone who is autistic, i can see myself in Marina, they could have really explored Marina's psyche and mental health in Side Order but they just... didn't. Instead she's put to sleep and controlled by her ai child and all of the focus is put on stopping it like a traditional "oh no we gotta stop an evil ai!! oh noo!!" story... ugh... I mean Smollusk is cute i guess but there's not a ton to them and they come off as yet another "evil ai that wants order and control!! roarrr!!!"

From reading the most recent interview on Side Order and seeing the concept art, they said that they wanted to tell a story about Marina losing herself to a machine that she created. Could you imagine how tragic it would have been to learn more about Marina and how she's so wrapped up in anxiety that she decides to make this replica of Inkopolis Square and make the Memverse? Maybe at first she makes it to help Sanitized Octolings just like in the dlc, but then maybe due to overwork and burnout (which Pearl mentions in the tutorial by the way), her emotions and anxiety become so strong that she becomes consumed by it, this obsession of order and trying to achieve happiness takes over her and then she gets the idea to spread this order to the real world, where her friends can be "happy" and "safe." Maybe Overlorder is still there but they just whisper to Marina, manipulate and point her in the right direction to continue to her mission of order instead of just fucking knocking her out and using her as a meat puppet for 5 minutes.
Could you imagine how much better the build up would have been to not see Marina until you get to the 30th floor for the first time and you got to unlock her diary entries beforehand? Seeing her thought process and her slow descent into becoming an antagonist. I'm not sure how they would have changed the permanent upgrades but they could have thought of something man. I get that they wanted to subvert expectations but, i think they should have gone WAY further with Marina Agitando.
I was waiting for Pearl and Marina to have their "Tidal Rush" moment where it's this emotional battle between the two, could you imagine how DEVISTATING a remix of Ebb and Flow would have been if it had gotten that "Tidal Rush" type of remix? Pearl singing her parts in this chaotic and emotional way, on the brink of tears trying to get Marina back and calm her down, and Marina trying to fight back against her words, not wanting to believe her because she's so wrapped up trying to make them both happy in her way. She's so caught up in order that she has forgotten what Pearl wants, that Pearl wants to be with her and go against any obstacle that stands in their way together. God i would have cried seeing that I'm not gonna lie. Maybe once Marina starts to think rationally, she breaks free from the machine and then leaps into Pearl's arms, and then we have to go back up the 30 floors to fight Overlorder and we slowly see Marina learn to embrace chaos throughout the floors instead of it just being at the final boss.

I really do feel like Splatoon has this issue of trying to appeal way too hard to kids and being really scared to dive into the flaws of these characters. They are so avoidant of being more serious and they hide it away in optional collectables and obscure posts on social media that creates misinformation and stories that feel way too undeveloped. They just say "oh this character has been brainwashed!!" which is such a lazy and bullshit trope they slap on these characters to avoid getting into their flaws for some stupid reason. (Hell that word has lost all meaning to me now to be honest. Like no, Callie wasn't "brainwashed" per say, hypnosis is not brainwashing or mind control I've said that a trillion times in other blog posts but whatever. Agent 3 was knocked out and had no clue on what was happening. They weren't "brainwashed" they were used as a puppet from a fucking goopy telephone for five minutes while they were asleep. Maybe its poor translation i don't know.)
I know that Splatoon is made for all ages and primarily for children but, i find that to be a stupid excuse for bad storytelling, a good story with depth that's explored and set up properly can be applied to all kinds of age groups not just adults. And the adults that say that shit too, why do you think like that? Why do you wish to dismiss that sort of thing in media? So what if it's made for kids? Adults write these stories and plant themes and arcs into them. Why do you think people cried over the Rosalina storybook in Mario Galaxy and think its the best part of that game? You don't want that kind of stuff in games because "they are made for kids"? Why do you think there are so many adults in the Splatoon community hmm?
I am so worried for Deep Cut in the next game because i really don't want this to happen again, i want an actual proper villain arc for either Frye or Shiver. No hypnosis, no brainwashing, no mind control. Just a pure fucking villain arc caused by the flaws of the characters and without the involvement of a third party. Please, i wanna see growth in these characters that is explored way more clearly and better. Or maybe don't do a villain arc again and just have Deep Cut be fully happy with each other and develop their relationship more with lore and backstory. PLEASE!

ok i think im just gonna type everything on my mind rn so this wont have any kind of continuity or shit so im sorry
also i know they talk inklish so idk if there a spanish or birtish version of it but idc!!! im going to ignore that ok so for agent four:
was 15 when marie made him agent 4, then he got hit with my transgender beam and changed his name to Four
sees Marie as a mother to him, and even if Marie thought that four was kinda weird at the start she warmed up to him
didn't talk a lot to marie af the start either, kinda just. looked at her, but as time went by he started to get more and more comfortable and started to get very talkative
met with the other agents at octo canyon-Tentakeel Outpost after octo expansion, so never got to see three without the scar on their face
the only one of the agents who finished school, three dropped out and eight couldn't go anymore after going to the surface
even if he acts really silly and goofy he’s not stupid, especially good at math!
fucking LOVES soda, really really rarely drinks water
bites eight and three out of nowhere, his way to show affection <3
sleeps a lot, likes to go into swimform and sleep in top of three or eight
in swimform, one of his tentacles is shorter than the other
(idc if games and franchises like this wouldn't exist in the splatoon world.... i have to project) LOVES pokemon, like an insane amount, has finished pokemon platinum like 50 times at this point

also likes to bite as a way to show affection, but does more carefully because she’s venomous ( just a little bit, tho! )
loves LOVES being the small spoon despite being the tallest of the three! ( 172cm tall !! woah.. )
Agent 3:
was 14 when recruited by captain cuttlefish, 16 when octo expansion stuff happened
scar on their face thanks to sanitization ! it kinda burned their skin... ouch !
big fangs that stick out, constantly bites their own tongue accidentally
has this dead/tired face :| but they're actually really silly too, just more chill than Four
cut their tail when they got into the new squidbeak splatoon, but its now growing back
selective mutism, learned sign language at like, 16? at the start Marie had to translate sign language to the neo3s
loves wearing his hero-headgear, they were modified to work like noise cancelers whenever he wants to
likes to sing, but is kinda shy about it
Also loves pokemon ! but more on the competitive side of it more than the casual, completely destroys Four when playing against him
loves when Eight or Four just. lay on top of them, like putting their whole weight on top of them.
can purr, both eight and four are fascinated by it??, no idea how they do it but its cute so its okay
when they and Four were teenagers, they loved to show him stuff he stole from enemy octolings, or just stuff they found cod knows where
has to do trips to alterna that usually last like 1-2 weeks? Four and Eight bake cookies for them <3
THEY ACTUALLY SHOWERS NOW, but forgets to wash their clothes so idk how much of a difference that makes
ALSO knows inklish and spanish! they have little to no spanish accent, their voice get a little more husky when talking in spanish tho
teaches Eight hard to pronounce spanish words because they like hearing her try and say it with her british accent
rubs their face against the other agents face / body to demand attention / show affection
HAS A CAT ALLERGY, you know how bad luck that is? the only mammals alive on your world and you're allergic to them?
also works at salmon run, but not really in the same team as Four or else they both get really distracted being GAY.

guess who finished talia’s ref/propaganda post!

talia is one of my oldest splat ocs (both in creation age [july 2016] and character age at 24) and honestly not much has changed about his design since i made her! the main difference is literally just some fun new piercings and a lgbt pass

talia is 5’10” and the middle child in his family! he has one older sister (taller still, a firefighter named moselle) and one younger sister (ren, new ranked battler) and they all come from calamari county where they were primarily raised by their mother :]
he moved to inkopolis at 15 to get into turf + to try to meet the squid sisters since they’re from the same area! there, he met peri, and they became roommates for about a year before they started dating
talia is highly money motivated mostly because she wants to make sure ren and her mother especially can live an easy life. she also wants to do something good with her life like moselle, who she looks up to as a hero.
sooo after a couple of years turfing with peri (an e-liter main) and working part time at the crust bucket, grizzco opened and the two decided to check it out!
turns out they’re very good at it + get paid very well as a result so that quickly becomes their priority and are very consistently ranked at profreshional
talia believes he’s doing something good to help out both mr. grizz and inkadia so he’s happy
after a while, grizzco’s splatlands branch opened and the two were forcibly relocated invited to move to the splatlands to help out with egg retrieval and training, and subsequently hit eggsecutive vp with victoria and fiorello in their now complete quad
talia knows jacinthe (my agent 3) but at the moment he does not know anything about the true nature of grizzco.
talia is a very trusting person and will typically take whats in front of him at face value. as mentioned before, she’s very tall and is pretty loud/high energy, so can be unintentionally overbearing when meeting new people. he also has the worst name memory ever so will typically nickname everyone he meets to something he can easily remember (peri is a nickname! jury’s out if he remembers her actual name) such as eggs for victoria and safety for fiorello. however, talia is very afraid of being perceived as a rude person, so tries very hard to be seen as the opposite, typically with gifts. can be unexpectedly emotional—cried over clam mochi being different when homesick, whenever big man loses, etc
her favorite idol in the splatlands is big man because she feels like she relates the best to him (and often feels sorry for him). his favorite splatbands are diss pair and front roe, but feels no connection to squid squad.
splatfest wise, he will consider his favorite idol’s alignment first before his own preferences. ex. he’s terrified of ghosts but likely will be on big man’s team for splatoween
in my imagination, his tentacles are box braids in human form :]

A VERY lengthy ramble about Salmonids, Grizzco, and Big Run.
Aaaand this is the follow up to my previous long post where I talked about the new Drizzle Season maps with my stream of consciousness observations. It is long. I am sorry.
Now, I seem to be in the minority when I say that I absolutely love Big Run as an event. I sort of get this vibe that a lot of people aren't happy with it, and considering how infrequent it is compared to Splatfests, I can't say I blame them - especially considering how stacked against the odds the reward system is. Like, top 5% of the entire playerbase for a gold statue? The playerbase of one of the best selling Nintendo games of recent memory? That's a lot of people who're gonna be left in the dust simply by design. I honestly can't fathom why they made the PvE gamemode's event more competitive than the PvP one, but for someone like me? Between the two, I do enjoy Big Run more. I prefer mastering a difficult challenge with a rare accolade to prove it over the stomping/getting stomped that comes with Splatfests.
So yeah, there's gonna be a Big Run arc in Humanity's Endling. I am biased. I will admit to this. In fact, I'm even willing to spill the beans on the fact that Act II is the Big Run arc. You may think it odd that the Big Run arc is gonna be happening before the inevitable Alterna arc, but keep in mind that you are technically able to experience Big Run before the main story. In fact, the original trailer for Big Run sorta inadvertently hints at this since Mr. Grizz's radio is still the bear eating the fish, rather than the new one you get after clearing the main story. Now obviously, that's likely the case since Nintendo didn't wanna spoil that detail, but it's worth keeping in mind that the main story can just... never be done on a save file. Could be the final damn Splatfest of S3 before some asshole decides to actually do something about Cuttlefish lurking in the manhole, y'know?
Anyways, Um'ami Ruins as a Big Run map is... interesting. The first three maps we've had have all had some obvious way for the Salmonids to arrive - Wahoo World is on the coast, Inkblot was built on a river, and Undertow is literally the sewers, but Um'ami?

...or is there?
Now, bear with me for a second, because I'm gonna go full detective here. Full theorist. A game theorist, if you wi- *gets shot*
Why would the Salmonids even want to attack these ruins to begin with? Do they have some kind of deep rooted cultural vendetta against the people who built this place? Is there some sort of ancient artifact interred within these grounds which holds unfathomable power? Are the Salmonids simply stupid?
No, no, and no comment. It's a lot simpler, actually.
They're not after the ruins. They're after the town next to the ruins.

That clearly isn't Splatsville. It's nowhere near big enough. It's just some tiny town in the middle of literally nowhere that just so happens to border these ruins, and is likely where the excavators and archeologists that are working here live. Additionally, such a town in the middle of nowhere would need some kind of way to get water, and there's this cool invention made by none other than Mario "Jumpman" Mario himself (source: trust me) called 'motherfucking pipes'. Those pipes probably run under/around the ruins - hell, those pipes getting built might even be how the ruins got discovered in the first place - and the Salmonids, being the chaos incarnates that they are, hitched a ride.
But if that's the case, why are we fighting them in the ruins? One of two reasons: they're trying to secure the ruins as some sort of outpost first and we're stopping them before they do that, or Grizzco is actively countering them by cutting off their advance at the ruins themselves. I'd imagine there's likely some sort of measures at play as well to cut off the flow of pipes for the exact situation of, "oh god there's hundreds of fish climbing out of my toilet", which would even explain how all that water gets there. The waterways are closed; wherever it wells up is where Grizzco moves in, as that's the only place the Salmonids can emerge.
That's probably why the alarms were going off in Undertow Spillway, beyond a literal 'perimeter breach' alarm. They likely closed off every waterway going to/from the place to contain the advance, it gets dangerously close to overflowing, alarms start ringing... this is right underneath the city. Shit was dire.
Big Run is a phenomenon that is as much a natural disaster as it is a literal act of war. We get to play as the soldiers, since that's the 'fun' part, but like with any hurricane, tornado, typhoon, forest fire, flood, or earthquake, there's so many moving parts to the response that a lot of people don't know about. First responders, evac, medical, meteorological, just to name a few.
A lot of people seem to be under the impression that the Salmonids are just hapless victims of Grizzco, and Big Run is just them striking back after dealing with Grizzco for so long, but honestly? I disagree. I mean, Grizzco ain't exactly squeaky clean, that's for damn sure, but the Salmonids aren't all that great either. They have their own culture and belief system for how the world works, and part of that culture is one that idolizes combat to the point where they'll attack in droves simply because the clouds dictate. If anything, they probably respect Grizzco and it's workers to some degree for being such formidable opponents time and time again.

Big Runs have been happening long enough for them to be mentioned in what's more or less the closest thing to an in-universe equivalent of the Bible, so their aggression is pretty heavily and historically documented. And clearly, they have no interest in joining the wider society outside of their clans in their murky waters (with Little Buddy being an extraordinary exception). Every sect of their society is trained for fighting one way or another; the smarter ones build and pilot weapons, the stronger ones are commanders, and they even have a place for the inexperienced where they serve as the snatchers. Their entire belief system is predicated on the idea that conflict makes one whole, that fighting and then dying is a process that lets them serve the cycle of nature. It's so deeply engrained into their way of life that they arm their children and send them to fight and die as well. They're a proud warrior race, through and through.
Does that justify Grizzco moving in to take their eggs? Because keep in mind, the Splatoon universe is also undergoing a constant energy crisis, and while we know Grizzco is doing shady stuff with the Golden Eggs... we're still collecting Power Eggs, too. In fact, that's literally the name of the job position - 'Freelance Power Egg Collector'.
On top of that, Grizzco isn't really keeping it secret. They're very open about what exactly is done. You go in, you fight Salmonids, you get their eggs, and you come back. It's a dirty job, but someone's gotta do it. It's legal, somehow.
Grizzco is likely providing legitimate aid for society through egg collection, which is probably how it's been able to grow to begin with - despite it being a front for Mr. Grizz's own schemes. Not only that, but society relies on Grizzco during Big Run. You can hate them all you want, but they're the ones who're making sure you still have a city to live in and power to run your damn internet.
But also, it's clearly not impossible to have some kind of positive relationship with the Salmonids, as the Octarians have managed to get some kind of trade deal going with them - although as of Splatoon 3, the Octarians seem to be less an actual army and more just the last few groupies Octavio still has after the Squid Sisters pulled some inspirational anime moment hijinks through the power of song twice. It just seems like the only thing the Salmonids are interested in are... more weapons. Weapons that they will then use during Big Run.
Imagine your neighbor breaking into your home and stabbing you with a knife you let him borrow because the clouds 'told him to'. It's... sorta easy to see why the rest of society hasn't really tried doing that. The Octarians probably didn't have much choice - or were at least comfortable with the trade since the Salmonids dwell on the surface, so they wouldn't be affected by their stampede.
Really though, it's a matter of two different shades of gray in constant opposition with each other. Lawful Evil versus Chaotic Neutral. Pick your poison.
If you haven't noticed, I've given this a lot of thought. Kaleb will have a ton to say in Act II about this whole situation. It truly is a uniquely fucked scenario, especially for someone who's world was taken away because of fighting like that... and that's without even getting into the actual things that'll happen during that act.
Before this post gets any longer, I do wanna put out a headcanon that'll be present during Act II, and that's the idea that there's only one Big Run that happens. I find it really weird and frankly absurd that this legendary, prophesized event of utter devastation at the hands of the Salmonids is... a neat, two day event that happens once every few months where they attack a single place and then leave. It's quite literally a biblical event, what's the deal?
So basically, the way I picture it is that Big Run is closer to a week, maybe longer, and basically everywhere is being attacked at once. Like, each Big Run we do ingame is just another theater for the fighting that's happening at the same time as the previous runs. Or, in other words, Wahoo World is under attack at the same time as Um'ami, and Inkblot is under attack at the same time as Undertow, and they're all under attack right now all at once. The fact that Mr. Grizz always acts like you've never heard of Big Run when it starts and the fact that you can hear the fighting in Inkopolis Square no matter the map honestly kinda lends to this idea.
It's just spaced out weirdly in the actual game's event lineup because having Big Run be a week long event that happens only once in the game's entire lifespan would be incredibly stupid from a commercial standpoint. Yes, I am huffing copium.
Anyways, I'm gonna stop myself here because holy shit this is a long post and it's so late that it's early. My sleep schedule is in shambles. I enjoy making these, though. I might do one regarding Alterna & Mr. Grizz himself when we get closer to the Alterna arc. Also I will still be playing Big Run tomorrow. Join me if you dare.

Tbh i think one reason why shivers won so much is that a three team splatfest is... kinda lopsided
so if theres one team thats more popular then naturally the other two are gonna get snubbed. Especially when like... in the first half the two least popular teams can get pitted against each other
Dunno if that makes sense thats just my hypothesis. I think for the next splatfest they should announce theres only two teams and shiver disappears falling down a trapdoor style
i at the very least dont think popularity should give you extra points that seems like an unnecessary bump </3

purposefully dramatic title to begin this post, i am in that kind of mood. i'm going to be talking about, as you can see, how translations handled {..butchered} pearl and marina.
i'm going to preface this by saying i know WHY this is the way it is. the communications between NOJ and NOA were not there for the most part, and also the fact that nintendo is as huge of a corporation as it is, {.. also the fact they're a company IN GENERAL} it can be and IS unethical in some practices. my anger towards their characterization isn't directed towards the employees, as they just did what they could!
now that i've made this clear, let's get started.. everything from this point on is under the cut. hang tight, it's a long one.
the main way these two are different lies in the ways they interact with each other. if you've played the english version, of course you're going to be used to the unserious bullying dynamic they have.

here's an example. {manta maria stage announcement dialogue.}
however, in the original japanese text, it isn't like this. this especially shows within marina.. though i wouldn't say she's exactly mean in english, she's positively a bit more smug in the comments she would make towards pearl. i'm specifically referring to her here as the contrast in her personality is very noticeable, here's an example. these exchanges were from the mayo vs ketchup splatfest, first beginning with the english version.
🦑 "it's the glorious union of eggs and oil-- MAYONNAISE!"
🐙 "versus the red stuff that runs through my veins -- KETCHUP!"
🦑 "pshh. ketchup is BOOOORING. it's like the sheldon of condiments."
🐙 "boring? at least ketchup has flavor. mayonnaise is just tasteless lard!"
now the original..
🦑 "the opponents are: mild and creamy! the alluring oily condiment "mayonnaise!" and.."
🐙 "a collaboration of sweetness and sourness! the way it spreads throughout the mouth, it's the refreshing "ketchup!"
see how different that is? this was only the theme announcement, but even just in that small bit of text, you can get an idea of the shift.
now, with this, vague hints of joke bullying are somewhat there however it's worded in a much kinder way by marina. something that must be said is that marina originally is sickeningly sweet, and is always polite. she speaks in a very formal and gentle manner, she's also quite respectful and that especially shows with pearl. going back to the vague playful jokes, here's a comparison of dialogue remaining similar, but being worded in a much gentler fashion.

marina has also seemed to be protective of pearl, sometimes worrying for her wellbeing.

as you can see, she worries about pearl potentially falling off the tower in blackbelly skatepark instead of thinking of her turntables. though this protectiveness is lightly hinted at in english, {marina commenting that she will "protect her precious pearlie at all costs" with her brella} it's more apparent here, don't you think?

this sturgeon shipyard conversation follows similarly to how it does in japanese, except marina exclaims to pearl that it's dangerous to start singing so suddenly. i can almost guarantee this is because of the pure destructive power of pearl's voice! the english translation hints at that same reasoning, but oddly enough? it's never outright said that her voice actually can destroy things, which was an interesting choice.
one more example before we move on. while it's a small detail, i feel it's worth mentioning. sometimes in their exchanges, pearl will speak of an idea or something similar to the text above, and marina will tell her to save it or to not do that now. meanwhile, in japanese, marina is more encouraging to comments pearl would make.

these are far from the only examples of this, but i'll keep it to these for now. i may make a future post talking more about this.
you may have noticed..
the ways they speak to each other in english are very similar to the interactions between the squid sisters. {in case you wondered, callie and marie aren't any different across either versions. the same old 'sibling' bullying.} while interesting, it makes sense. as i stated much earlier, the communications between NOA and NOJ were not prioritized as much in splatoon two, which isn't the fault of the translators themselves. they used a dynamic with them that they were familiar with, as they seemingly had nothing else to go off of.. it's a very nuanced subject. i very heavily dislike the localizations, but i understand why it's been done in this way.
example, i do not like a vast majority of the way the octo expansion was handled.
this is a whole other can of worms, due to the fact that even beyond off the hook, things got kind of weird within it. if you're curious as to what is different, please take some time to watch the octo expansion retranslated mod, by ardnin with help by rassicas!

it's a wonderfully done mod that is about ten times more faithful to the original expansion LMAO. the chat logs also feel a ton more natural.

i cannot possibly give my proper thoughts WITHOUT spoiling anything so this is your warning
spoilers for splatoon 3 side order dlc
gonna be kinda going through multiple aspects and analyzing them, this is just my opinion don’t punt me into the sun please
starting off, im overall not a fan of rougelike games. so that has definitely biased my opinion. i didn’t like all the repetition and i got frustrated at it a lot, its just not for everyone! i found it became a lot easier once i figured out which colour chips and hacks helped me the most (drone boosts were big).
it took me a bit to actually finish my first run because the palettes i kept getting were weapons i’m awful at (brella, splatting, charger, BRO CMON) but i cleared my first run with the brush surprisingly. i understand how rougelikes work but it still felt kinda short and underwhelming.
the gameplay itself wasn’t terrible, the levels were interesting and i liked how you could choose the difficulty and rewards and such. colour chips and the drone were a really neat addition and i had fun getting used to it.
the lore was meh. kinda disappointed. i’m glad we got to see more of ahato/acht, just wish they got a bit more spotlight and development aside from the diary entries (they got lots, i’m just a diehard fan lmao).
the storyline in general was… a little lame to me? it felt like it didn’t really build off of much and it doesn’t give much room to expand from it (at least personally). felt a little predictable imo.
REWARDS! not bad! inkopolis square was expected, and it’s not my preferred area so it won’t be my default but i think it’s really neat and i’m excited to see it again for splatfests. really liked how we got the exact gear from the dlc as well, and the replica weapons (no tri slosh </3)
the final boss was COOL. very fun to play and much easier than i thought! (why was F28 harder than the final boss lmfao) the cut scenes were awesome, esp before the final phase. music went hard.
also. where is agent 4. cmon. cmon bro.
overall, meh. didn’t hate it, didn’t love it.
the main letdown i had was how the game actually played out vs. the concept art and how it was teased. it seemed like it was going to go in a much different direction, which is fine, just a little bit of a bummer. thought it would be a little darker like OE. side order was really hyped up and for me it just, wasn’t all that!
for me there was a lot of comparison to OE, i kinda expected/hoped for it to have the same hype. with that comparison it felt a little boring and short, ESPECIALLY in terms of rewards. it’s pretty hard to top unlocking PLAYABLE OCTOLINGS. OE had a LOT of brand spankin new stuff, levels characters plots all of it was so fresh and exciting, because before we only had basically 2 copies of the same story mode.
another thing i was talking about with sem was how in OE, since you didn’t need to beat every level right away to beat it, there was lots of new to go back and finish, AND most had multiple weapon options to 100%. SO has something similar, but again, feels repetitive to me. don’t have any motivation to do another run.

Little Shiver
Baby regressor, they are itty bitty
They’re nonverbal 95% of the time
Chew and teethe on everything
Their main caregiver is Big Man, and Frye is sometimes a big sister regressor (she also regresses to around 4, so she’s Big Man’s little helper)
They struggle to play with toys a lot, especially with others, because they prefer quieter games or ones that don’t require a lot of energy/movement. They tend to just watch others play or color. When Big Man cooks, they’re always at the table, watching Big Man 50% of the time, the other 50% is them coloring.
-If Frye is little with them, she usually wants to play with them even though Shiver isn’t super good at matching Frye’s energy. Because of this, they usually end up playing games like “princess” where Frye is a knight going out to fight the dragon while Shiver cuddles with their plushies and watches.
They’re extremely clingy but also prone to a bunch of napping. They will demand your cuddles, immediately fall asleep in your lap, but somehow wake up and whine immediately as soon as you try to put them down.
Very sensitive little one
-Big Man has gotten accustomed with the little octoling’s sensitivity and knew exactly how to handle this situation by now. He set them onto the counter before gently taking the shark plush from their hands. He also sets a first aid kit on the counter next to Shiver, taking out a special pack of bandaids for situations like this. “Ay ay, ay ay (okay baby, can you show me where she got hurt)?” The sniffling octoling points to the shark plushie’s head, continuing to softly cry to their papa, silently asking for him to make it better. Big Man then placed a heart pattern bandaid on the plush’s forehead before giving it a kiss. “Ay ay (all better)!” He hands the stuffy back. Shiver hugs it tightly before they’re picked back up and gently bounced on Papa’s hip. “Ay ay…ayyy… (She knows you didn’t mean it baby. She’s okay).”
Bottles > Sippy cups
Doesn’t even try to pretend they’re a big kid, even going as far to insist they’re the ittiest bittiest ever (a contrast to Frye who will deny being even kind of little for DAYS at a time)
Needs to be guided with everything, even having trouble with walking on their own
Thinks peekaboo is the best thing to be invented since Splatfests
Enjoys the nicknames “Little star” “prince/princess” “squirt”
Accidentally chewed holes in their baby blankie and stuffies before because they have sharp teeth, so it’s important to always have teethers and pacis nearby
Baby babbles
-Big Man will greatly encourage the babbling, asking stuff like “oh yeah baby?” “Tell me all about it!” “is that so?”
Always snuggled up in blankies, as they get cold really easy

I Wrote a lot about Octavios music Teehee. (both his themes, Callie and his collab and 3MIX)
something I found interesting. Was how in splatoon1 his voice was much more like softer, not that grimy feel he has now, (although he still has it in his dialog so idk-) which makes me think he recorded the vocals at the beginning of the war, plus it makes sense due to the first theme feeling very like, authoritative, it was very out there, plus the chanting where it goes “U A, U O A” which gives it a huge octarian feel, along with the bells as if it’s the end Y’know? Also all the beat drops and wind-ups, along with a considerable tech feel, the synthetic kinda noises, which kinda show's how he was still learning, especially how he kinda loses control for a moment in one of the fazes where it’s like the disks jog back and forth, along with how kinda quiet it is compared to the BOOM his other themes have, which I can say the same with his voice, (ignoring the term balls dropped here) it shows how once he gained more popularity as a DJ he just got louder, and the weird voice box he has now is most likely due to his old age and his throat sounding like it’s sore as fuck, Although comparing this to his remix of his own theme in Splatoon3 is much faster yet the background noise is more chillax, you can still faintly hear the ‘u a, u o a’ in the beat, yet seconds after shit goes ham in an ‘in your face' manner as he starts spitting bars, instead of a quiet voice with slightly louder music doing the work it’s the opposite here, his voice being louder and the backbeat matching his words, also it sounds a little intergalactic which is ironic cause he ends up helping you in space, you can’t hear the chanting anymore most likely because he fights you alone on the surface, which he just does himself with some of the beats, also it’s most likely as short as it is due to not having the great zapfish and being defeated quicker than the other two times.
Ok so back to splatoon2, Callie and him practically collabed instead of him using his own theme, with Bomb Bomb Blush Ft:Callie, It still has very much octavios i guess preference, except it’s much more expansive with different styles of music, showing how over the years he used other music to mix with his own (which is DJ-Ing at its finest) yet still has much of a threatening army tone, yet again here he uses the chanting beat instead of having the octarians do it most likely to let Callie sing her ass off, so they don’t steal her spot-light, yet there’s another beat that sounds almost inspiring like to give hope to his people in a way, cause if you really think about it, they are the good guys in their eyes, when in reality octavio is more in the grey area, hence the mix of tense and threatening parts compared to callies, which is most likely why he kidnapped her in the first place, kinda a ‘hey your happy and inspiring ig, make my people hope or something’ way. It really is a collab as well, like neither of them are going overboard on the other, they both get their moments and Octavio doesn't even rap at all, he’s just the backbeat, and when Callie takes a breather that’s when he goes ham with the beat, Splatoon3 Calamari Inkarnationen3MIX has its typical Octavio start, but now mixed with the new trio's national Instruments which once again shows his vast knowledge abt music, as shiver and Frye sing their asses off, Octavio took calamari incantation and MADE It more of an incantation, it’s a mix between Octarian music and inkling music, this is something completely different than what he usually makes, which shows he really likes this fucking song, (even though he denys it but that's cause he's salty) and wants to take it to its full potential, he even adds a little of the music that’s been playing at splatfests for years, like the whistles and drums, it also has much of an electric feel to it which is most likely conforming to frye, what I like most is the songs overall aura, like it gives off such a cocky yet hopeful vibe, he also makes sure to keep the notes relatively the same for Marie and Callie when they sing on their own, but the more they get into it the more hyped up the song gets, as they finish their lines, as it goes back to the singless jam, i love how like culturally aware he is, he’s like “aight, we got a throat singer, a theatrical singer, J-pop, and an inkling of African descent along with Big-man’s Brazilian ass, “ so he incorporates ALLL OF IT into one, and he does it in such a good way that none are overdoing the other, which like we Stan, he’s like “ok the inkling Jpop shit is getting old so, lemme yassify it losers" And fucking does it, it sounds like he listens to everyone’s fucking music and makes sure it all fits their vibe so they can give their best performances, which keep in mind this is playing when your SAVING THE WHOLE WORLD, so they better fucking be giving their best. Faintly at some points you can hear him say some stuff too, but it’s mixed in with the drops of notes so it’s hard to catch, I also love the back chorus, which he most likely got from his own people, it sounds practically “heavenly” which is what he calls the song on multiple occasions, so it makes sense. In conclusion I believe he picked up music more for his people than himself, but genuinely loving music and making it, it once brought hope to his people, and then finally in splatoon3 it’s bringing hope to everyone, which I think shows a huge character development in his case, I don’t think he helps you just to beat a common enemy, but because he wants to protect, and I find that very admirable, he really fits the title of king. i wrote this at 6AM after no sleep

Question: Can inkfish even eat chocolate? My headcanon is that Inkfish can eat chocolate but only in very small amounts and probably with an age limit. I imagine that chocolate was brought over via trade with another species that can eat chocolate and inkfish might have gotten a little addicted to it. Kind of how squirrels are addicted to chocolate but shouldn't be eating it.
They can eat chocolate. there is a ridiculous amount of chocolate-flavored things and chocolate drizzle is something people love to put on stuff, we just had the splatfest (normally splatfests are a questionable canon source though). Chocolate is toxic to a lot of animals, just like pretty much everything is in certain amounts - humans have a weird amount of tolerance to a lot of things in nature that are meant to be toxic deterrents but we're like omg poison sooooo yummy. given how Inklings evolved to be somewhat omnivorous and really enjoy fruit, it wouldn't be far fetched to me that they also developed resistance to a lot of stuff. hell, maybe they can even eat berries that are toxic to us.
idk. Really i dont think about things like this much at all because i know that even if you deep dove into animal diets and made a comprehensive list of what human foods a squid could be able to eat, or what it could theoretically evolve to eat, it would never add up to what's in the actual game because it's first and foremost a human parallel. If we're being real, squids are carnivores and they shouldn't be eating pretty much anything except fish and crustaceans and each other and like, worms. But in the game they're eating waffles and ice cream and avocado toast and whatever the hell else they absolutely in no way should even be able to digest, lol.
So they clearly have omnivorous adaptations despite mainly being carnivorous. I like to think it's so they can supplement their diet easier because the amount of calories that an Inkling needs in a day is literally ridiculous, if we look at pre-civilization Inklings or even modern inklings that play lots of turf war. Considering HOW they move changing forms, swimming, producing that much ink, super jumping, having no bones so a LOT of their movement is almost purely through muscle, ET CETERA, you'd be REALLY GRATEFUL to be able to eat something that doesnt require chasing and is calorie-dense, and metabolizing sugars is something that would REALLY HELP THAT (which brings us to stuff like noodles, rice, bread).
Fruit is an especially notable thing and I believe it was one of the first things Inklings started eating when they started developing away from being purely carnivorous. Fruit has a LOT of sugar which is good if you can metabolize it and you're a hyperactive species that produces like their own weight in ink in like an hour if given the chance, and fruit also has a LOT of WATER which is. Well, read above. same thing. The water is really the main thing they would NEED to get through their diet, way more than solely eating meat provides on average
kind of a ramble there but it's tangentially related i promise. ALL THAT BEING SAID. there's definitely foods that have been brought cross-species through trade. i'd like to think stuff like rice and wheat actually wasn't commonplace with inklings and vegetables are VERY new in their culinary culture, especially things like lettuce. They probably mainly had things like crustaceans, fish, eggs, fruit and whatever prior. There's a piece of stage dialogue in Splatoon 1 that implies vegetables literally didn't exist until like less than a hundred years ago but idk if they just made that up.
