The BJU Board of Trustees Executive Committee has a busy week ahead.

The +++Positives+++ are focused on the vote that will occur on this Friday, March 10. They say:

The executive committee (EC) of the BJU board of trustees is having their regular monthly meeting this Friday, March 10. The EC is currently six men who seem to be divided into three groups. The group that has most consistently opposed Dr. Pettit: John Lewis, Joe Helm, and Hantz Bernard; two who now seem to be supportive of Dr. Pettit: Sam Dawson, Mike Harding; and finally, Jerry Morgan, who had been very positive about Dr. Pettit over the last year. We are praying that the EC will advise Dr. Lewis to retire or resign this week, and that new EC majority will support the current positive direction and growth of BJU.

And then on the 28th:

As part of the board’s annual meeting, the EC will meet again on Tuesday, March 28 when they will discuss the renewal of four board members. If the renewals are recommended and approved by the EC, the board member renewals will be voted on by the full board on March 29-30. If any of the four board members are non-renewed by the EC, those board members would simply roll off, without any vote by the board. The EC could also nominate new board members for a vote of the full board on March 29-30.

We believe these self-perpetuating EC provisions of the board bylaws are the most troubling–-that a small minority of the full board (only four EC members) can control the future of the university. There are two pro-Pettit board members and two additional board members who are more “in the middle” up for renewal at this annual meeting. We will be watching the actions of the chairman and the EC as they have several different choices that they can make with regards to the makeup of the BJU board.

But two women -- Holly Helm Davis and Heather Helm Olson -- object to "the names that were named" saying that it's a "complete falsehood."

Now who could they be related to. Hmmm.....

As a frequent "ugh, fanon," person it's not that I don't like non-canonical character designs or interpretations as a concept. I love unique and creative ideas about fictional characters that are informed by canon but diverge from it in interesting ways that build upon the original vision! I almost never see this in fanon.

#this is about a bunch of things but rn i'm thinking about halfling tails...uninteresting repetitive pointless and in conflict with canon #more generally i get that fanworks are derivative by nature and that's the point but there's similar and there's The Same. #like. my beef with fanon is not ultimately one of HOW DARE YOU DEVIATE FROM THE HOLY WRIT #it's that it's often dull and poorly executed by people who are gathering around a single kind of stupid headcanon #there are many great individual headcanons out there but they almost never make it to fanon status #bc fanon is not a garden of many new interesting ideas. it's a single dirty pink flamingo haphazardly stabbed into the lawn. #99% of the time canon was better bc it wasn't passed through a committee that stripped it of anything interesting and made it reproducible #anyway follow for more musing on how i believe that while capitalism has DEFINITELY made art worse social media also has #most of my favorite creators end up being the ones who are either very offline or at least have very hard boundaries #and most of my favorite fan creators are involved in fandom but are also fanon (derogatory) people

In response to the BJU administration ultimatum letter, the BJU Board of Trustees Executive Committee responded.

Note that the author of the response is John Lewis's lawyer, Ashley Abel. The +++Positives+++ are aghast that the CEO has hired a non-fundamentalist lawyer, but their pearl-clutching is kind of silly. I'll get to that later.

This letter will have to come in two posts -- the BJU Board Handbook section and the BJU current position section -- since Tumblr is persnickety.

Dear BJU Administration, Faculty, Staff, and Student Leadership Council:

The Executive Committee of the BJU Board of Trustees thanks you for your service to the Lord through the University.

It is generally both policy and wisdom for a board of trustees to refrain from public statements and from providing internal board information to anyone outside the board. Boards function under tight confidentiality. Recently, these trusts have been violated and nearly obliterated. Hence, we must take the unprecedented step of communicating with you. As stated below, between Board meetings the Executive Committee is authorized to act on behalf of the Board.

Before we get into specifics, you should know BJU's board was created to be an active board with clearly defined responsibilities and duties. It is not a ceremonial board. Consider the following sample of University and Board requirements in connection with what has been transpiring at BJU:

Bob Jones University exists to grow Christlike character that is scripturally disciplined, others- serving, God-loving, Christ proclaiming and focused above. (Policy Manual, Section 1.1)

To establish a thoroughly Christian school that would be distinguished by its academic excellence, refined standards of behavior, and opportunities to appreciate the arts, and at the same time, a place where Christ would be the center of all thought and conduct. (Policy Manual, Section 1.2.1)

The Board of Trustees is vested with all the powers and authority to govern effectively and set policy for the University in accordance with the laws of the State of South Carolina, including to approve and periodically review the mission of the University and to ensure that the leadership of the University is guided by the mission; to establish general policies for the University concerning the mission, vision, values, clientele, programs and services; and to evaluate the performance of the University and the University administration regarding compliance with the policies. (Policy Manual, Section 1.3, Bylaws, Article III, Section 8)

Involvement as a trustee should create an atmosphere that will allow others to see the University in a favorable light. (Policy Manual, Section 1.4.1.4 (1))

Trustees are to provide advice and counsel to the executives (Policy Manual, Section 1.4.1.4 (1)); to monitor progress on the achievement of institutional goals, objectives, priorities and student learning outcomes; to maintain strict confidentiality of board and committee meetings and of all information proprietary to Bob Jones University; and to avoid conflicts of interest or the appearance thereof in accordance with the Board’s Conflict of Interest Policy and to subordinate one’s personal interests to the interests of the whole Board. All matters discussed in board meetings are to be kept in the strictest confidence by each board member. (Policy Manual, Section 1.4.1.4 (3))

The Board maintains the rights and authority in all matters pertaining to the University and may limit or rescind the authority it has delegated to the Administration (Policy Manual, Section 1.4.2 (1)) and evaluates the University’s progress in achieving its mission and the quality of the educational programs and services it offers and the performance of every other function required to be performed by the Board of Trustees by the regulatory and accrediting bodies with jurisdiction over the University (Policy Manual, Section 1.4.2 (8)).

Trustees are to be free from any conflict of interest, which includes financial conflicts; political gain; and actions or situations that might result in or create the appearance of adversely affecting the University’s reputation or public confidence in its integrity. (Policy Manual, Section 1.4.2 (7))

The Board of Trustees is the overall governing body of the University. It assumes responsibility to develop the mission of the University consistent with the University Charter and Creed. It sets direction and ensures continuing relevance, fulfills responsible oversight, and evaluates the University’s performance related thereto. (Policy Manual, Section 1.5.2.1)

It shall be the duty of the Executive Committee to keep a strict supervision over the affairs of the University and at all times to protect, uphold and defend the creed and all other bylaws and rules and regulations of the University lawfully adopted. (Policy Manual, Section 1.3, Charter)

The Executive Committee shall exercise all the duties of the Board of Trustees in the interim between meetings of the Board. The Executive Committee serves as a sounding board for the board chair and the president. (Policy Manual, Section 1.3, Bylaws, Art. VII, Sec. 1)

The chair shall serve as the spokesperson for the Board of Trustees. (Policy Manual, Section 1.3, Bylaws, Art. V, Sec. 2)

The president of the University shall have the day-to-day supervision and control of the operation of the institution. (Policy Manual, Section 1.3, Bylaws, Art. VII, Sec.1) The Board, however, maintains the right and authority to interpret its policies and to mandate enforcement of the policies by the president for all matters pertaining to the University. The Board may rescind, limit, suspend or reassign the authority, duties and/or services of the president. (Policy Manual, Section 1.3, Bylaws, Art. VI, Section 2) The president is appointed by the Executive Committee and approved by the Board of Trustees and reports directly to the Executive Committee through the chair and to the Board of Trustees. (Policy Manual, Section 1.5.2.2)
