Joker Out: The band that conquers Europe

Joker Out is a band that definitely left a mark this year in the territory of the former Yugoslavia. After their performance at the Eurovision Song Contest, they became popular all over the old continent. "Carpe Diem", the song they represented Slovenia at this competition with, surpassed 10 million streams on the Spotify platform. Their collaboration with Elvis Costello on "New Wave" also attracted a lot of attention.

Although they have been active since 2016 and have two studio albums behind them, it seems that things fell into their place only this year. After the Eurovision Song Contest, they performed all over Europe, so they recently also had a concert in Dublin. For Oradio speaks the band's frontman Bojan Cvjetićanin, who we talked to before the performance at Arsenal Fest.

"When we came to Dublin for the concert, we didn't know if there would only be people from the former Yugoslavia in the audience. We were surprised because it wasn't like that. Most of them were from Ireland or England. We were even more surprised that they also learned the songs. They tried their best to imitate our language. They were club concerts, and we had time to talk to people. The vast majority noticed us at the Eurovision Song Contest. I think that despite the Internet and social networks, it is not possible for people to hear you without such a competition in the flood of music", believes Bojan.

Liverpool is somewhat a fateful place for you - you performed there at the Eurovision Song Contest, but it is also where the legendary Elvis Costello grew up, with whom you recorded "New Wave". Has that made you popular with the audience that likes a more alternative sound?

I believe that version of the song "New Wave" with Elvis Costello is not the most commercially interesting thing, but it is one piece that means a lot to us and always will. It's our first collaboration with such a big name in music. If anything, it gave us some credibility in the music world.

You made that transition from Slovenian to Serbo-Croatian and English. Which versions of the songs are easier for you?

It is easier for me to sing in Slovenian and Serbo-Croatian. I was in the studio yesterday trying to record an English version of one of our old songs. We came to the conclusion with the producer that we have everything, but we still need to find a tone in which I can move when it comes to music in English. I will definitely have to practice more!

The audience truly has a great time at your performances. There was a frenzy at the Beer Fest in Belgrade recently.

There was a flood. That was all we talked about after the concert, and we couldn't believe it had happened.

You sold out Novi Sad's "Fabrika" in record time. What do you expect from the upcoming concert in Novi Sad?

We had our first gig in Serbia last year in Novi Sad. Even then, we saw that a tiny "bubble" of people who would come to our concerts created. I think there will be a great atmosphere in the "Fabrika" reserved only for us that evening.

Lezet - "Fabrika" is out on MURMURE INTEMPOREL (France)!!!

felt a strong urge to once again react musically to the incessant noise produced by the factory across my street - I have already done it on the "Misadventures" album. But instead of organising actual factory sounds into tracks, this time I chose to react to them by improvising on piano, organ, synths and wooden flute as they unfold.

Recorded in September & October 2023, Pozega, Serbia.
