Multiple cities across France boycott World Cup in Qatar
Multiple cities across France boycott World Cup in Qatar
The FIFA Men’s World Cup, the most widely watched sporting event on the planet, begins November 20 in Qatar. France is the defending champ, but many French cities are refusing to broadcast the games on giant public screens. Paris and other French cities like Bordeaux, Strasbourg, Lille and Marseille say they won’t promote the World Cup in public fan zones to protest Qatar’s human rights and…

Heat
Synopsis: Qatar seems worse than ever this year, and it’s especially not kind to F1’s female driver. The grid does what they can to help.
young female driver reader x 2023 F1 grid
A/N: For this one, reader will be 21, and have driven for aston martin since the beginning of 2021 with lance
You’ve driven in about 60 races in your 3 year F1 career so far, yet you’ve never raced in conditions like this before, and you hope you never will again.
Preparing for Qatar the weeks leading up for it, you could laugh at it now because no amount of simulator training or exercising could’ve readied you for the heat in Lusail.
You felt it as soon as you walked out of the airport; the gust of hot air that hit you in the face, the harsh evening sun beating down on you.
“Oh my god” You said to your teammate, pulling a pair of sunglasses out of your pocket. “I know,” Lance says, copying your actions. “This sprint is gonna suck” You groan. “I can’t wait”
The two of you immediately got into the cars waiting for you in the parking lot, and drove to the hotel you’d be hiding in until Thursday.
Media day was bad enough, having to spend hours doing interviews and sitting in to press conferences while trying to get any cool air near you.
“Is Qatar like this every year?” Oscar asked you while sitting alongside Charles, George, and Pierre in a conference.
“It’s been hot the last few years, but nothing like this, no” You answer honestly. “It was nowhere near this hot last year” George adds as the other two drivers nod.
You get through the rest of the day with a lot of water and the many surprisingly useful paper fans you and Lando made as a joke. Friday is dedicated to FP1 and Qualifying, and you end the practice in P11, qualifying P7.
The temperature was bearable that day, but you still left your car red-faced and sweaty afterwards. You talked with a few engineers and strategists before leaving to collect your things and go back to your hotel in hopes of getting some rest before the sprint the next day.
You walk into the paddock Saturday afternoon prepared to endure whatever the shootout and sprint was going to bring to you. You went P9 in the shootout after a stressful amount of track limit warnings, and spend the time before the sprint relaxing in your drivers room. You finished Saturday’s race P8 after defending against Pierre and Valtteri , and trying to overtake Alex in front of you.
You exited your car feeling as tired as you would after a normal race, and tried to show as much happiness as you could for both Max and Oscar after their race finishes.
After using your post-race interview to congratulate the two, you went back to your garage to finish the first race debrief of the weekend, and was sent back to your hotel with instructions to get more hydration and rest.
You thought you felt the worst of the heat earlier in the weekend, but you were proved wrong as you neared the Aston Martin garage Sunday evening.
Nobody could find decent shelter from the Qatari sun, and you were almost sweating by the time you were getting into your car.
You’d done as much possible as you could to prepare for this race, and now it was time to see if it was all worth it or not.
“Good luck, stay safe” Lance said, leaning over your car.
“Good luck, you too” You flip your visor down as your teammate gets into his car, and you’re given the signal to enter the pit lane.
“Ladies and gentlemen,” David Croft begins to commentate. “it is a scorching night out here in Qatar, our drivers have just finished their formation lap, we’re seconds away from driving into the night for 57 laps, it’s light’s out and away we go!”
You pull away from Esteban early and get close to Pierre, taking P6 by Lap 15, and are able to get out his DRS zone afterwards. Statistically, this was good, but physically, you were not feeling well inside your cockpit.
By the halfway mark, there was sweat running down your face, your throat was dry, and your entire body felt like it was overheating trapped inside the small space.
You tried flipping up your visor and adjusting your gloves to get some more airflow, but both methods proved ineffective, leaving you with no fresh air.
By the time you were nearing the end of the race, every turn made your head spin, every straight blew more hot air into your cockpit, and the constant effort of defending against the two Alpine’s behind you was draining your energy.
Your vision was starting to go in and out as you finished your last laps, and you crossed the checkered flag with a sigh of relief, not even caring Pierre overtook you and left you in P7.
It took everything inside you not to black out during the cool down lap, and you could barely manage to maneuver the car into perc ferme.
Drivers were sitting up and getting out of their cars all around you, but you couldn’t find any energy to leave yours. You sat in your car, head leaning against the steering wheel, breathing heavy, as other drivers started to notice.
“Y/n? Are you okay?” Pierre kneels by your car, labored breathing and accent thicker than usual. You shake your head, the small movement making your head pound, and groan.
“Y/n, c’mon, I will help, give me your steering wheel” The driver persists, holding out his hand.
You oblige, as Pierre shouts towards the cars in the front. “Charlie! Venez ici! (come here)
As Charles makes his way from his Ferrari to your car, you begin to sit up and wrap your hands around the halo to pull yourself into a standing position. You move to sit on top of your car after your vision gets dizzy and you start to lose balance.
“What’s wrong? Are you two okay?” The Monagasque asks before you shake your head once again.
“I’m fine, I don’t think she is. Here, put one of her arms around your shoulders” Pierre instructs as he reaches out to help you step off the car.
Despite themselves finishing the same grueling race, the two men move you to sit on the ground before doing the same.
George notices, and comes over with four bottles of water to join you three sitting against the Aston Martin car. The four of you pull off your helmets and balaclavas to chug the water George brought, too tired to move anywhere else.
You’re still dizzy, your hands are shaking, and your body is still overheated, but you’re done with the race and you have water, and those things seem to be the only ones that matter.
“You guys okay?” George asks from beside Charles.
“No”
Charles and Pierre shake theirs heads. “Me either, but shouldn’t we, like, go get weighed and stuff?”
You wave a hand dismissively and take another sip of water. The British man nods again. “Yeah, you’re right”
After a few more minutes of sitting on the ground against your car and listening to all the action around you, the four of you stand up to complete the post race procedures and go to the media pen.
“Y/n, how was your race? Are you happy with P7?” The journalist asks you, pointing the microphone towards you.
“Yeah, I’m happy with it. The race was really tough though, I was really struggling towards the end to finish the race and bring the car in”
“A lot of people think Qatar should be moved in the schedule, or taken off completely. What do you think about that?”
“I think it should definitely be moved to either earlier or later in the year. I know I wasn’t the only driver struggling out here, and it’s not safe that we race like this” You reply honestly.
“I agree, Y/n. Good race today, get some rest” The woman smiles at you, and you’re glad to be able to head back to your garage.
After about thirty minutes, Lance joins you and the rest of the engineers in the debrief room, and takes a seat next to you.
“Holy shit” He says.
“Yeah”
“Never again” You agree.
something short and sweet for the all the pain qatar brought earlier this year

You don't belong to him, do you?
jealous!Max x girlfriend x Lewis Hamilton
Summary: Lewis crashed out first corner in Qatar so you walked over to the garage to comfort him(knowing his your bf's enemy)... What will happen if Max finds out-
Warnings: Aggressive Max....yea pretty much it-
Tumblr media Tumblr media
------------------
You paced back and forth by the pitwall, slightly poking your head over Christian's shoulder everytime to see the car-cam in Max's vehicle waiting to hear your favourite part of each race start "lights out and away we go". Completely lost in your thought you zoned out for a moment, not hearing anything at all, that was until you heard "Lewis Hamilton turns into George Russell-". You slightly shook your head to break the trance and walked up behind Christian to confirm what you heard, and infact what you heard was true. You watched as Lewis got out the car and walked across the track, immediately excusing yourself you made your way to the Mercedes garage of Lewis Hamilton and waited for him.
Afew moments later he arrived, clearly not in the mood for anything or anyone. So you quietly stood there and watched him take his helmet and gloves off. "I'm sorry about your race Lewis." you softly said trying to not draw too much attention to yourself. He just slightly smiled and nodded his head "These things happen all the time, no need to worry." he responded. For the next few laps of the race you two spoke and you sat next to him trying to comfort him as much as you could before it finally snapped you back into reality that you should be watching and supporting your boyfriend right now. "Sorry Lewis I have to go before certain people start wondering where I am." you offered him a kind smile and hugged him before leaving to go back to where you originally were. Little did you know certain F1 and fan cams got you two on record.
"Where were you?" Christian asked not looking back as you walked up behind him. "I was just walking around the paddock." you responded nonchalantly. Christian didn't respond and just nodded before continuing to speak to Max over the radio. Eventually the race came to an end, and as usual it was your boyfriend that won. You smiled a genuine happy smile and clapped as you saw your boyfriend on the big screens crossing the line. Eventually Max got out the car and grabbed a bottle to quench his thurst. As he congratulated Norris and Piastri, something on the big screens behind them caught his eye. It was you hugging and talking to Lewis. Oh Max was beyond pissed and he watched the way you two smiled back and forth.
You were completely unaware of anything and smiled when you saw him walking towards you and Christian. You were slightly confused to why he looked completely pissed but you probably thought it was because he was tired. And let me fucking tell you, ma'am you were WRONG... "Congratulations Maxie-" "I don't want to fucking hear it." he cut you off. He held your wrist tightly and pulled you behind him before going to Christian and whispering something to him, to which Christian just nodded and walked away. Max then turned back to you and grabbed your wrist tightly dragging you with him. "Max you're hurting me-" you try and protest, but he ignores you and the fans watch as he drags you to his driver's room. He slams the door behind him.
"What the actual fuck Max! You won the fucking race!? What's got your dick in a knot!?" you shout at him, clearly angered by the way he manhandled you infront of people and at all for that matter. Without saying a word he moves fast and places his hand around your throat, gripping it tightly(not enough to hurt you just cut off the airflow). "You think you can fucking embarrass me like that Schatz. Smiling and being all over Lewis while I'm racing to fucking win for us!" he raises his voice and you furrow your brows "I-i- it's not like that..I was comforting hi-" you managed to struggle out. "Comfort him? Comfort my fucking rival?" he smirks clearly amused at your stupidity. You attempt to shake your head but he has a firm grip on your throat and smiles and your hands come up to his hand in attempt to get him to stop. "Oh Schatz, baby-" he smirks as he cuts himself off and loosens the grip on your throat as you take a gasp of air.
Suddenly there's a *ding* on his phone and he quickly takes the phone out his pocket. He opens the notification and it's the exact same thing he saw on the big screens. He smirks still looking down at the phone as he reaches his hand out to grip you face by your cheeks as he pulls you over to him and shoves the phone in your face. As you watch the video and pics that people took of you and Lewis. While you're distracted Max latches his lips onto your neck trailing wet, sloppy, open-mouth kisses up and down your neck causing you to whimper. Inbetween kisses Max mumbles "You don't belong to him, do you Schatz?" "N-no" you softly whimper out-

the moment you stepped off the plane you noticed that doha was extremely hot and humid. max had warned you, he had sent you multiple texts telling you to bring fresh clothes and sandals, and to leave behind jackets and boots. you couldn't stop yourself from thinking how it would be to race under such conditions when even walking outside was uncomfortable.
"hey". you heard max's voice through your airpods.
"hey, i've just landed". you said. "i'm on my way to the hotel right now".
"i'm sorry i couldn't pick you up-".
"max". you interrupted him. "don't worry, i'm very aware you're busy right now. plus you've already sent a driver, which is more than enough".
"yeah, but who would've be a better driver than a two-time f1 champ-?".
"didn't you say the other day you didn't want to sound too cocky? and i'm pretty sure he will do the job well".
"well, tell me if he doesn't, i'll drop everything and i'll pick you up".

saturday was the day. by the time you had woken up, max had already left the hotel. the night before, he had told you his schedule was packed, from trainings to meetings until the sprint shootout.
you knew it was going to be a difficult day. being back into the spotlight absolutely terrified you. you weren't sure how people would react when they saw you back in the paddock. back then, when charles and you were a thing, the fans used to love you, but now you weren't so sure.
max and you had planned this beforehand. it wouldn't be like it was in the past. you would not be walking next to max and celebrating his third world championship win with the team like you did with charles whenever he ended on the podium. max had told you he would love to see you there, but you had made it clear you wanted it to be more private. after all, that was a girlfriend would do and you were not. you decided you would be hanging out in the paddock with the rest of the vip guests, but max had given you a red bull pass so you could access to all the facilities if you needed to.
the first thing you did when you arrived to the circuit was text max just to tell him you were there, just like he asked you the night before. he was quick to respond, asking you to join him in the garage, where he was getting ready for the sprint shootout. even though it was still early, the atmosphere was busy. you adjusted your sunglasses hoping you would not be recognized easily, but you quickly spotted a couple of cameras pointing at you. god, the rumors would be terrible.
"y/n?". you head a voice you knew very well. charles was standing in front of you, with his red race suit tied on his hips and a surprised expression on his face.
"hey". you said as you approached him. he, as he always did, opened his arms to give you a hug as a greeting. "i was going to wish max good luck before the craziness starts".
"making friends with the enemy?".
"oh, come on, charles! you know very well that my favorite team has always been ferrari". you said. "plus, i'm pretty sure you love max".
"i know, i know. i'm just messing with you". he confessed. "how come he convinced you to come here?".
"well, you know, stepping out of my comfort zone and that stuff". you explained. "i wanted to come before, but i always felt like the rumors would be too much after we-".
"yeah, don't worry, i get it". he interrupted you. "i'm glad you're here".
"i happy to be here too". you said. "i should probably go see max, he must be waiting for me".
"go, i will see you later".
"good luck, charles". you said as you wrapped his arms around his body, he tightened his embrace to hold you closer. "and please don't get hurt".
"thank you". he said after giving you a soft kiss on your forehead.
· · · · ·
max stood next to two of the red bull engineers, with his navy blue race suit tied on his hips and a bottle of water on the other. he listened carefully to what the engineers were explaining to him, but, as soon as he noticed you, he excused himself to approach you.
"i thought you got lost and i was about to send someone to find you". he said as soon he was close enough for you to hear him.
"i actually found charles on the way and we talked for a bit".
"oh, that makes sense". he replied smiling.
"how are you feeling?".
"pretty relaxed now, but i know it will change the moment i get in the car". he confessed. "i don't want to insist, but you can stay here if you like or, if you want to go somewhere quiet, you can go to my driver room. i've made sure they let you in wherever you want".
"don't worry, max. thank you".
"max". a man called him. "sorry, i hate to interrupt, but the trainer is looking for you".
"just one second and i'll go".
"i should probably go grab some food before the shootout starts". you said. "good luck out there".
you smiled at him and placed your right hand on his arm. max reached out to grab the left hand to pull your body closer to his, your arms instinctively embraced his body as he did the same. and for a few seconds it felt like there was no one else in the room.
· · · · ·
after the celebration of max's third world title with the team, max and you had headed back to the hotel, keeping in mind that the next day was still race day. max, who after a couple of drinks couldn't stop smiling, had asked you if you would like to stay for while and now you were sitting on the sofa of max's hotel room balcony, where you were able to appreciate the stars in the qatari sky. max, after asking which drink you fancied, had opened a bottle of red wine and filled two glasses. you noticed how the burgundy color looked prettier under the moonlight, just like the ocean blue of his eyes.
max had placed his feet on the table in front of him while yours had ended on his lap. his fingers timidly drew small circles on your bare legs and ignited your skin with every movement.
"you know what?". he said while his blue eyes starred at the moon. "i have this vivid image of you in my mind from when you traveled to barcelona to support charles".
"oh, that was in 2019, right?".
"yeah. charles wouldn't stop talking about you back then". he smiled as the memories come back to his mind. "i remember seeing you smile to everyone who approached you, even though charles had told us you were shy and, man, i just remember thinking you looked so pretty that day with that red summer dress you wore".
"oh god, i remember it! you didn't speak to me the whole time i was there and i thought you disliked me or something".
"well, it was the other way around, i definitely had a crush on you". he confessed. "but you were dating charles and you were way out of my league".
"oh, come on". you hit him on his left arm and he chuckled.
"it's true, it's true". he took a sip of the red wine. "and now, four years later, here we are".
his blue eyes starred deeply into yours. the blood rose quickly into your cheeks while your pulse accelerated. it was almost ridiculous how he could make your body temperature rise with just one stare. you left the glass on the table and moved you feet from his lap to be able to come closer to him.
"i've always been fascinated by you".
the moment those words left his mouth you found the courage to place your hands softly on his face. max stare dropped from your eyes to your lips and his hand found their way to your waist, pulling you even closer to his body. carefully, your nose touched his, feeling his breath become deeper. time stopped the moment you placed your lips on his and all you could feel was him: his hands grabbing the fabric of your dress, his chest touching yours as he leaned towards you, his lips moving against yours and deepening the kiss so passionately that you were out of breath. and that night, under the qatari heat, two bodies became one.

omfg your vore fic is life changing. hell yeah to stigmatized weird af kinks ❤️ since you’re so good at character kink psychology, i’ll throw another one in the ring for fun - thoughts on inflation? i’ve never seen it in f1 except one fic that had it i’m pretty sure unintentionally lmao
also congrats on accidentally solving an f1 dilemma: if the drivers vore each other, there are more seats left open for young drivers to join 😅
oh anon!! first, THANK YOU and i’m so glad you liked the vore fic — i was honestly shocked at what a great reception got, but i’m really fucking delighted that people like it. hell yeah INDEED to the stigmatised kink rep! and lmaoooo maybe oscar should let the FIA know about that one too, it would sure solve a lot of problems 🤔
now, inflation! this one was WAY out of my comfort zone and i have done a lot of interesting reading today instead of doing my job! there are so many facets to it and you didn’t specify a preference, so i went with liquid inflation as this scenario came to me pretty naturally — i honestly have no idea if i’ve hit the sweet spot (ahem) with this as i was so unfamiliar with it, but i definitely awoke something in myself writing it lmao. i hope you enjoy :)
sort of one-sided landoscar, but in the context of an established relationship. cw for liquid inflation (eta because i wrote this in a rush: to clarify, it’s fantasy-based, not actual inflation), curve worship, fantasised helplessness (although all fully consensual).
Oscar’s not built like any other driver Lando’s seen.
He’s strong, obviously. Stronger than Lando is, that’s for sure. But he’s also — shaped. He’s got an arse some of the underwear models of Lando’s acquaintance (or, well, former acquaintance) would be jealous of. Little waist, but his belly pushes out against the fabric of his fireproofs. The soft mounds of his tits, firm muscle covered in a light layer of flesh that Lando likes to squeeze.
Oscar’s shy about his body too, in a way Lando finds slightly odd given how they’re all used to being manhandled and grabbed by their physios, engineers, sometimes the fans when the security in the paddock is lacking. Keeps himself covered up in shorts and T-shirts until the very last minute, even when they’re fucking. Averts his eyes from his own body, preferring instead to focus on Lando’s.
It’s not that Oscar hates his body or anything, as far as Lando can tell; he’s just used to seeing it only as an object of function, not something to be desired. Even though Lando thinks he’s gorgeous, could spend hours worshipping every soft and furred camber of his strong thighs and broad chest.
Lando doesn’t know how to tell him that, express how much he loves Oscar’s curves. He tries to show it instead, spends snatched hours between free practice sessions mapping out Oscar’s body with his hands and tongue.
He daydreams about it sometimes, the words he’d use to explain it. That there isn’t enough of Oscar to contain all of the desire Lando wants to stuff him with. That he wants more of Oscar to worship.
It’s something he’s always known about himself, ever since he was a kid. But it’s never been as intense as it is around Oscar. Pale, soft Oscar, all hair and solid heft, his blurred edges and the sweet flush of his skin.
Probably Oscar wouldn’t mind it if Lando admitted it to him. He’s never minded anything else. But this one feels risky, somehow — a raw and vulnerable thing to express.
Still, he wants Oscar to know, somewhere underneath it all; he must do, because he slips up, sometimes. Just in small ways.
It had been bad in Qatar. Lando had been half-delirious anyway, staggered back into the garage after media to see Oscar propped up against the central island in the garage, hungrily sucking water from the long straw of his drinks bottle. Eyes closed in bliss, throat working as he swallowed, swallowed, swallowed.
His racesuit hung limp from his hips. Above it, Oscar’s swollen belly curved from the fabric, full and distended. Feverish, Lando told himself he could see the stretch of it, the skin taut and bouncy as a drumskin beneath his sweat-soaked fireproofs. His hands had twitched with the effort of not reaching out to check.
“Thirsty?” he’d said, smiling, trying to make a joke of it. Trying to keep his eyes on Oscar’s face and failing, drawn to the curve of his stomach like it was exerting its own gravitational pull. “Careful, you can fuck yourself up if you drink too much water.”
Oscar had slow-blinked at him, like a cat trying to make friends, left the mouthpiece of the straw resting on his bottom lip when he answered. “Kim put electrolytes in it.”
Lando had nodded, swallowed. His own mouth watered in sympathy.
“Keep going, then,” he’d said, and Oscar had smiled, sucked the straw back into his plush mouth and continued to drink.
The memory still does it for Lando, even now, months later.
He could have taken Oscar back to his room, their bodies still salty and aching. Let him curl up on his side on top of the cool sheets of Lando’s bed, let Lando fill his bottle to the brim with cool water and stir in electrolyte powder. Kneel at the side of the bed and feed the nozzle back into his mouth, stroke the damp hair back from his temples, let it curl around his fingers as Oscar sucks and sucks.
His stomach would stretch, round and tight as a ball, one smooth convex curve from ribs to hips. The inward dip of his waist hidden, overwritten by the surge of flesh.
He’d let Lando crawl onto the bed behind him, spoon Oscar’s growing body, one arm tucked beneath his armpit to hold the straw in place. Lando would slip a hand beneath his T-shirt, peeling the fabric back so he could rub soothing circles over the bulging skin. Undo his straining jeans, the zipper sliding down of its own accord from the pressure. Say something like that’s it, Osc, you’re doing so so well. Oscar would press back against him, shuddering, body lax and lush. Moaning when Lando’s hand skims his swollen nipples, cock slipping between the fat globes of his arse. Oscar’s got a nice fat cock too, a plump handful. He’d press it up against Oscar’s belly, tend to him as he lay helpless and swollen, suckling trance-like at the straw still held between his lips.
Here, let me help you with this, Lando would say to the shell of Oscar’s ear, squeezing his cock. It’ll take the pressure off. His big belly pressing Lando’s hand into the bed, barely able to rock his hips into the answering push of Lando’s hand.
He’d come like that, spilling over himself, letting Lando push his soaked fingers into his mouth and swallowing that down too. Part his lips and say more, please, eyes blank and lidded with pleasure. Lie patient and limpid while Lando scrambled off the bed and round, taking out his own cock and pushing it against Oscar’s hungry, suckling tongue, filling him impossibly more.
That’s what tips him over, spilling into the clutch of his own palm: the thought of Oscar swallowing down everything he has to give. His come the final straw, stretching the skin almost to breaking point. Oscar’s eyes closing in bliss, sleepy and sated, unable to move.
Lando keeps his eyes closed for a long time once the aftershocks have subsided, unwilling to let go of the fantasy. Finally opens his eyes, staring at the unfamiliar hotel ceiling. Outside, the dull thump of bass from the party yachts berthed along Yas Marina filters through.
He sighs, struggles to sit up, goes to wash his hands. The room is all meagre angles, cold metal and sharp, mean corners. He curls his hands into fists, feeling the emptiness inside them.
Back in the bedroom, he sits down on the edge of the bed with his phone, tabbing to his message history with Oscar.
How would u feel if i told u about something u might find gross, he sends before he can chicken out.
Oscar replies almost immediately, like he knows Lando’s waiting, nervous.  About yourself? Literally nothing could surprise me anymore.
Promise u won’t get mad or tell me im a freak? Lando sends back.
Try me, Oscar replies. Then, immediately after: Well, not unless you want me to, anyway.
Lando smiles, chewing his bottom lip. Come to my room after debrief and i’ll tell u in person.
Oscar heart-reacts the message. He definitely knows Lando needs reassurance; usually he uses the thumbs-up. Lando pockets his phone, stretches the kinks from his back and goes out to the balcony, letting the last vestiges of sun warm his skin. That’s the funny thing about Oscar. Whatever love Lando has to give him, however strange its shape, he’ll always find a way to make it fit.
---
ps even though this ends on a slightly ambiguous note due to its one-sidedness, it does of course take place in my landoscar kink shared universe and so, in case anyone is worried, oscar did indeed react with a shrug and "okay, cool" and fire up "i have an inflation kink, AMA" on reddit :)

“Qatar has shown the world that football can be enjoyed without alcohol, and women can enjoy it without fearing for their safety,” Yes Qatar has human rights issues but this raises some very interesting questions about drinking culture and Women’s safety.
Tumblr media
Doha, Qatar – When Andrea M set off from New York to follow Team USA’s journey at the FIFA World Cup in Qatar, she reassured her friends and family that she would not do anything risky during the tournament.
What she had read about Qatar painted an alarming picture of the host country.
“The US media’s portrayal of the Middle East has been very different from what I have experienced here,” Andrea, 29, told Al Jazeera, adding that her friends decided against travelling to Qatar.
Andrea said she is glad she came. “Simple things like taking a walk around the city late at night, that’s something I can’t do back home.”
A 10pm (19:00 GMT) kickoff time for many of the group stage matches and knockout games mean that fans exit stadiums, use public transport and celebrate in fan zones well past midnight. And women, in groups or on their own, are watching football at public screenings, singing and dancing with other fans and moving around without worrying about their safety. According to the Numbeo Crime Index, Doha routinely ranks as the safest – or the second-safest – city in the world.
For Joy Nkuna, the experience has been a stark contrast to her home country South Africa, which ranks as among the most dangerous countries for women travellers. “We have very high crime rates in my country, especially against women,” she said. According to recent government figures, more than 1,000 women were murdered in South Africa in a three-month period between the start of July and the end of September.
Nkuna, 39, said she doesn’t venture out alone past sunset in her country. “From the minute it gets dark, women can’t be out alone or they will be in danger,” she said. “Here, me and my daughter walked around at 3am and nobody intimidated us, catcalled us or looked at us in a way that would make us feel unsafe.”
Tumblr media
It’s an experience that Tatiana Lopez can relate to. Thirty-three-year-old Brazil fan Lopez, who has travelled from Colombia with two female friends, said men in public places have been very courteous. “While it is strange to see more men in public places (compared to women) than I’m used to seeing in Colombia, they have all been very respectful.”
Lopez said she has been enjoying the tournament without worrying about her belongings, which is something she’s not used to back home. “I can actually carry my backpack on my back, and keep my phone in my pocket because I know nobody will snatch it from me.”
Women who have been living in Qatar said safety is not a new phenomenon linked to the World Cup.
Khadija Suleiman, a 32-year-old Ethiopian who has been living in Qatar for 10 years, was at the Lusail Stadium for a 10pm kickoff recently with her three children and two nieces. “I don’t feel the need to be with a man in order to feel safe,” she said as she walked towards the stadium.
To be sure, security presence has increased in Qatar because of the World Cup. But Suleiman said that women’s and children’s safety in public places has never been a concern for her while in the country. “If I need to, I can send my children to school in a taxi and not worry about their safety.”
That confidence is shared by women from other parts of the Gulf region, many of whom have been able to participate in the Middle East’s biggest-ever sporting extravaganza without fear.
Tumblr media
Dalia Abushullaih has travelled to Qatar from Saudi Arabia and said she is overjoyed to see women celebrating in public spaces. “Qatar has made sure that women feel safe and comfortable in being an active part of the tournament and enjoy freely,” the 29-year-old said. “The world is finally witnessing our beautiful Arab culture, and it is beautiful to see people taking it all in and going back home with a part of it.”
Apart from the stadiums, women and children have thronged tourist areas such as Doha’s Souq Waqif and fan zones spread all over the city. Some arrive during the day as festivities are getting started, while others push through the crowds with strollers to join the post-match celebrations.
The decision by organisers to ban alcohol sales in or near the match venues has also added to the confidence of many women that attending games won’t compromise their safety.
Camilla Ferrierra, a tournament volunteer from Brazil, said knowing that she won’t be surrounded by drunk fans at the stadiums made her feel safer.
Tumblr media
“I could never imagine going to a football match alone [in Brazil],” she told Al Jazeera. “I can’t imagine being outside late at night, using my phone in public without fear and just being able to enjoy a walk or a football match. Here, I feel 100 percent safe and that’s a great thing for us women: to be able to enjoy the festivities and football in a safe and secure manner.”
Hanoof Abdullah, a Kuwaiti football fan, sat by herself in the middle of thousands of Brazilian fans at the Lusail Stadium. She said Arab families would have found it difficult to stay out at night if they knew alcohol was being served.
“Qatar has shown the world that football can be enjoyed without alcohol, and women can enjoy it without fearing for their safety,” she said. “The bar has been set very high, and now the world will have to work very hard to match it.”

There was a comment in one of the articles about drivers not liking the driver introductions saying 'it will only be at the big races' and actually that kind of reveals part of the problem with F1 today...
They're all 'big' races, they all give the same points (except sprint weekends), they all have 20 drivers there, 10 teams taking part, they all have an equal outcome in the championship standing, so why are F1 trying to create a tier system between them. (Rhetorical question... The answer is money)
And more to the point, if there were 'big races', from a fan perspective at least, Miami wouldn't be one of them. Only the second year, relatively poorly attended (I know they announced record attendance but last year sold out and this year had empty stands so the math ain't quite mathing), and not exactly the best racing on track. Instead F1 is trying to re-engineer the 'prestige' of these races to suit their highest bidders.
It'll be interesting which other races they try this at. My bet would be everything in a US friendly time zone plus Qatar and Abu Dhabi (although I wouldn't put it past Silverstone trying to replicate it too) but we'll see i guess...

Tatooine
How does Tatooine work? What do we know about Tatooine?
its habitable zone is very small - probably about the size of the Qatar peninsula
it has water, but most of its hydrosphere is underground, probably deep underground, and not accessible from the surface
we don't know about the surface temperature in the habitable area, but most fans assume it to be on the upper limit of human tolerance (similar to the Sahara or the Californian desert, both of which are shown in the films)
the indigineous intelligent species, a progenitor of both the Jawa and the Tusken, is/was not human
humans and other sentient beings from around the galaxy have tried several times to settle Tatooine, but it was apparently never profitable enough to keep going in the long run
Tatooine as we know it has been officially under Hutt rule for about a hundred years, which means it is definitely not part of the Republic - that is in fact the reason Jinn tells the Nabooians to land there
the Jawas and Tusken are both semi-nomadic and live with the land and its creatures (especially the bantha)
the diet of a traditional Tusken includes hubba gourd, black melon, ganno juice, womp-rat meat and other game, bantha blood, and bantha milk, they rarely have fresh water and see it as a sacred ressource
the settlers on the other hand have established moisture farms, that is to say a homestead were they use vaporators to gather moisture from the air and use part of that water for underground hydroponic farms (the rest they sell or give as water-tax to the Hutts)
Tatooine has some small oases
every bigger settlement on Tatooine has a hunting guild
the moisture farmer (like the Lars family) thus have clean water and fresh produce to sell and buy meat, milk, grains and technology from others

Blog Post 2 --Music
Music that I relate to this class!
Based on our class discussion on March 27th
Dreamers performed by Jungkook BTS
Jungkook BTS. “Dreamers.” Dreamers [Music from the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 Official Soundtrack], Katara Studios, 2022. Spotify, open.spotify.com/track/0jY618wuln0b5b8sCxFgjk?si=5984a81bcb554860
This is a song that first came to mind to me. I am huge BTS fan, and I remembered that one of the BTS members performed at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. The song is about achieving one's dream. It also highlights how one's hard work has allowed dreams to come to reality. The performance of this song in a world stage in Qatar signifies how music can be a common language to different cultures.
Arabian Nights performed by Bruce Adler and Disney
A Whole New World performed by Lea Salonga and Brad Kane and Disney
Menken, Alan and Ashman, Howard. “Arabian Nights.” Aladdin (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack), Walt Disney Records, 1992, track 1, Spotify, open.spotify.com/track/0CKmN3Wwk8W4zjU0pqq2cv?si=ab20df9beb964674
Menken, Alan and Rice, Tim. “A Whole New World.” Aladdin (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack), Walt Disney Records, 1992, track 9, Spotify, open.spotify.com/track/5VIfacsWytkcgr7aTt8Tql?si=474b084114604623
When I think of Arab culture portrayed in media, the Disney animated movie Aladdin first comes to mind. My favorite song from the movie is "A Whole New World" specifically performed by Lea Salonga, as she is a fellow Filipino. The song "Arabian Nights" describes the stereotypical setting of an Arab country--"it's flat and immense and the heat is intense." Based on our class discussion, I've learned that the lyrics of "Arabian Nights" can negatively connote the Arabic culture, especially with the lyrics "It's barbaric, but hey, it's home."
Where is the Love performed by Black Eyed Peas
Black Eyed Peas. “Where Is The Love?” Elephunk, Interscope Records, 2004, track 13, Spotify, open.spotify.com/track/0xmjwnQ3FNE6HuWCt2nHdZ?si=eb3f5ada72d847a0
This song also comes to mind when I think about our class title. "Where Is The Love?" calls to attention the double standards individuals have for other cultures in comparison of their own. The song compares stopping overseas terrorism to domestic terrorism. It implies how our society is focusing a lot of our attention overseas, while turning a blind eye to terrorism occurring at home. "Overseas, yeah, we tryna stop terrorism, But we still got terrorists here livin In the USA..." Aside from having a deep message (which is, where is the love these days), the song is very catchy.
Danger Zone performed by Kenny Loggins
Loggins, Kenny. “Danger Zone.” Top Gun – Motion Picture Soundtrack, Special Expanded Edition, Sony Music Entertainment, 1999, track 1, Spotify, open.spotify.com/track/3hMHG6lx9QHVcfYSUr5PoM?si=d8a899f8dd8f40b2
The movie Top Gun is the first movie that comes to mind when I think about American strength. Top Gun showcases the US Air Force's mighty planes and aerial performances. Every time I hear the song "Danger Zone" I immediately connect it to Top Gun. Again, based on our class discussion on March 27th, a lot of Hollywood media always portrays US military as mighty and powerful in comparison to Arabic militaries. With this in mind, I find Top Gun as a good example of US military power.

大家好! I welcomed the ICJ's ruling and order to Israel to take all measures to prevent genocide in Gaza. A ceasefire would've been even better, but for now, this will do. I'll continue to pray for an end to this conflict and a two-state solution to be implemented. It's the only plausible way for both parties to exist in peace.
Tumblr media
Hamas has already agreed to release hostages in return for a ceasefire and the only thing that stands in the way is Israel's refusal. To me, it looks like Israel is unreasonable and refuses to compromise. How can negotiations take place if one party insists on wiping out the other? Take the hostages, pull your soldiers out and go, you've done far too much damage, taken too many innocent civilian lives and caused too much suffering! Hopefully countries will begin sanctioning Israel and apply pressure for a ceasefire.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, I continue to visit Muslim stalls and enjoy dishes like nasi padang. We have quite a sizeable Malay population in our country and they're Muslim. Many of them are saddened by the tremendous suffering of the Palestinians. By offering warmth and friendship, all of us are reminded that we're fellow citizens during these very trying times. I just wish certain parties are not so belligerent and would stop fanning wars all over the place (stare at the US and UK).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Countries that are defunding the UNRWA, such as the US, Britain, Australia, Finland, Germany and Italy may potentially cause famine in Gaza. These nations claim to champion human rights so why the double standards when it comes to Palestinians? Do their lives not matter equally? Should they not be allowed basic essentials in order to survive? Why are they being denied food, shelter and warmth?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The hypocrisy is very disturbing at a time when innocent Palestinians are dying, either from a massacre or from starvation. Frankly, I don't trust these countries any longer. Human rights should be universal and not a privilege. I pray that more aid will reach Gaza. 下次见!
