Red Wedding II
Take into account that after the Black Dinner that inspired the Red Wedding, one of the architects behind the Black Dinner was James Douglas III, uncle to the two boys killed, leaving him their title and seat as Earl of Douglas. Twelve years, later, history repeated itself when James’s son William was murdered at a dinner in Sterling Castle. There is likely going to be another Red Wedding in The Winds of Winter.
Whose POV is it going to be through?
Jaime, or if not him, then Brienne.
Who is getting married?
Ser Daven snorted. "I'll wed and bed my stoat, never fear. I know what happened to Robb Stark. From what Edwyn tells me, though, I'd best pick one who hasn't flowered yet, or I'm like to find that Black Walder has been there first
-AFFC, Jaime V
Daven Lannister to his Frey bride. In a fit of irony, he cites Robb Stark breaking his agreement to marry a Frey leading to his demise, yet it is his honoring the agreement and his wedding to a Frey that results in his demise.
Where is it going to be?
Riverrun. Its proximity and equidistance to the Westerlands and the Twins makes it the perfect location. It is the castle Daven besieged, the former capital of the Riverlands and the sight of the final Lannister-Frey victory over House Tully when they took their overlords’ castle signifying their de facto rule over the riverlands. It also helps that the Blackfish left it stocked with plenty of food meant to last a two year siege.
Who is going to be there?
A number of other Freys are likely going to be there including Emmon and Genna’s family since they are the Lords of Riverrun.
Lord Walder Frey is going to be there. This wedding is a big deal, celebrating the alliance between Houses Lannister and Frey, and as shown with his defilement of Robb and Cat’s bodies, he is a petty men who likes to humiliate his enemies. Having his kin’s wedding at his former overlords’ castle is something he cannot pass up.
It also draws one other person.
Lord Emmon rubbed his mouth. His hand came away red and slimy from the sourleaf. "To be sure. Riverrun is mine, and no man shall ever take it from me."
-AFFC, Jaime VII
Tumblr media
Lady Stoneheart could not stand the idea of her two most hated enemies celebrating in her family’s ancestral seat. She has her agent Tom O’Sevens in the castle who would likely tell her of the wedding and that Lord Walder is attending. Lord Walder being there means she will definitely come.
She also won’t be the only Tully visiting.
"After the trouble Ser Brynden took to leave us, I doubt that he'll come skulking back." Unless it is at the head of a band of outlaws. He did not doubt that the Blackfish meant to continue the fight.
-AFFC, Jaime VII
The Brotherhood would likely find Brynden and he would of course aid his niece in taking back their family seat. Edmure might be there as well, rescued by the Brotherhood.
How will it go down?
Walder and a few men and Freys from the Twins will come down to celebrate Daven’s wedding in a celebration of the Lannister-Frey alliance as the Lannisters control the Iron Throne and the Freys are de facto liege lords of the riverlands. Tom O’Sevens acting as an agent will coordinate with the Brotherhood to get them into the castle during the celebration.
The smallfolk of Riverrun will likely aid the Brotherhood given they served the Tullys their whole lives and remember Edmure for sheltering them in his castle during the Battle of the Fords while their new lord Emmon doesn’t inspire much confidence in even his own family, and he made them all stand out in the rain for three hours talking about what he expected of them. That’s not even mentioning that they all know he got Riverrun as a reward for the reviled Red Wedding, and his wife Genna is a Lannister, sister and aunt to the same people who attacked them. The smallfolk will likely hold no love for any of the occupants, wedding guests or garrison.
The Brotherhood will also have Jaime and Brienne, with the former in a position similar to the one Roslin was in the first Red Wedding in that he is forced to play a role in the massacre. Like with Brienne who was forced to lure Jaime to them, they will likely force Jaime to serve as a Trojan horse with the Brotherhood using Brienne as a hostage to ensure Jaime will follow through on his part. He will arrive with a supposedly captured Blackfish (and possibly Edmure) as a wedding gift and with the Brotherhood in tow disguised as his men to lure Riverrun into letting them in. Most of them will likely mingle with the Riverrun garrison who will be feasting separate from the main party while a few accompany Jaime to the great hall.
The players in the gallery had finally gotten both king and queen down to their name-day suits. With scarcely a moment's respite, they began to play a very different sort of song. No one sang the words, but Catelyn knew "The Rains of Castamere" when she heard it. Edwyn was hurrying toward a door. She hurried faster, driven by the music. Six quick strides and she caught him. And who are you, the proud lord said, that I must bow so low? She grabbed Edwyn by the arm to turn him and went cold all over when she felt the iron rings beneath his silken sleeve.
-ASOS, Catelyn VII
Like the first Red Wedding, the attack will be signaled by a song. In this case, Tom O’ Sevens will play “Wolf in the Night,” the song commemorating Robb’s victory at Oxcross to signal the attack.
The Brotherhood without Banners and any of Riverrun’s smallfolk will kill off the garrison. Lady Stoneheart then reveals herself at the wedding. Lord Walder’s reaction would be noted now that he is no longer protected behind the walls of the Twins and finds himself surrounded by foes in an enemy castle completely exposed. The same man who quivered at a ten year-old Tywin speaking against Emmon’s match to Genna would undoubtedly be terrified at an undead Lady Catelyn having come for revenge.
"on my honor as a Stark, I will trade your boy's life for Robb's. A son for a son." Her hand shook so badly she was ringing Jinglebell's head.
Boom, the drum sounded, boom doom boom doom. The old man's lips went in and out. The knife trembled in Catelyn's hand, slippery with sweat. "A son for a son, heh," he repeated. "But that's a grandson . . . and he never was much use."
-ASOS, Catelyn VII
Walder will likely make a similar offer of “a son for a son” in a way that shows the contrast between the two characters. While Catelyn offered to spare his kin to save her son’s life, he would be offering his sons’ lives to spare his own, ie “I’m sorry, I know you’re mad about your son’s death. So, how about this? Just to make us even you can kill one of mine. Take Emmon. If you want you can take more.”
Of course, it would work just as well as Cat’s did. Stoneheart won’t be swayed anymore than he was, and he like Cat was, is without any bargaining room. Lord Walder would likely get the most gruesome fate.
Catelyn would gladly have spitted the querulous old man and roasted him over a fire, but she had only till evenfall to open the bridge. Calmly, she said, "All the more reason that we must reach Riverrun, and soon. Where can we go to talk, my lord?”
-AGOT, Catelyn IX
Addam Marbrand's scouts had found them, hanging black-faced beneath a crabapple tree. The corpses had been stripped naked, and each man had a crabapple shoved between his teeth. None bore any wounds; plainly, they had yielded. Strongboar had grown furious at that, vowing bloody vengeance on the heads of any men who would truss up warriors to die like suckling pigs.
-AFFC, Jaime V
Walder will be put on a spit and roasted like a suckling pig over a fire. Such a thing would not be easy for Jaime to watch given it would be reliving his traumatic experience of seeing Aerys burn people alive.
The rest of the Freys and Lannisters captured who aren’t cut down will likely be hanged. Genna might survive, but she would see her children and possibly grandchildren hanged. She would be a mother who lost her family, exactly Cat’s situation at the end of the Red Wedding.
Brynden and Edmure would likely be disillusioned seeing what became of her, realizing this isn’t the Catelyn they knew and loved.
Jaime would escape Riverrun and the Brotherhood eventually, and like last time he would escape with Brienne. But as for House Frey, Walder was the glue holding them all together, and with him gone it’s going to be a civil war in the Twins over who becomes the Lord of the Crossing with Edwyn being next in line but his brother Black Walder will be looking to take that title and Lame Lothar will be working behind the scenes.

Sid Smith (with Marvel Rea) in Nonsense (1920, Jack White)
Pencil-mustachioed Smith worked for Keystone briefly in 1917, but returned more prominently when teamed with Billy Bevan in Del Lord-directed comedies in 1924 like Lizzies of the Field.
A Fairbault, Minnesota native, Smith started in motion pictures in 1911 with Pathé Western under the direction of James Youngdeer, appearing in films such as Her Son, The Bullet's Mark and The Blind Gypsy. He joined Selig around 1913, appearing in Castles in the Air, the three-reeler Garrison's Finish, Her Victory Internal and Tale of a Coat. Smith played Mickey in "The Red Head" series and appeared in their "Chronicles of Bloom Center" series in 1915.
He married Ruth Beckman on Mar 17, 1915, and they divorced in Apr 1921.
Smith's first starring series came with Alkire Photoplays, and in 1920 he made 26 Holly Comedies for Bulls Eye, featuring Paul Parrott and under the direction of Robert Kerr. Smith supported Monty Banks in his Warner comedies, and in 1921-22 he appeared opposite a succession of other comedians in the successful "Hallroom Boys" series for CBC/Federated. Smith made some shorts for Grand Asher in 1923 and starred in Jack White's Cameo Comedies in 1923-24, before his work at Sennett. Smith had appeared as "Ramon Alfaro" in the feature The Ne'er Do Well(Selig) in 1916, and repeated his role in the 1923 Famous Players-Lasky version. He also appeared in Kismet(Waldorf 1920), and starred in many shorts for Al Christie during the 1920s, for Paramount and Pizor in 1927 and for Goodart in 1928. In 1928, Smith was featured in two World War 1 spoof features for Anchor, Dugan of the Dugouts and Top Sergeant Mulligan.
Smith's death in at 36, was attributed to his having imbibed bad liquor at a Malibu beach party. He left his father J.L. Smith of Fairbault, Minnesota, and brother J.C. Smith of Des Moines, Iowa, and is interred at Hollywood Forever Cemetery.

The director Jack White(center)'s childhood days in Fatty Joins the Force (1913)
A neighborhood kid from Edendale, White appeared in a couple of 1913-14 Keystones (such as the boy who gives Fatty Arbuckle a pie in the face in Fatty Joins the Force). White also briefly worked the Sennett switchboard, but was fired for putting a call through to Ford Sterling that lured the star comedian to another lot. White wound up producing comedies for Educational in the 1920s that competed with Sennett's.

The Infamous Stringdusters & Leftover Salmon w/ The Kitchen Dwellers Live at The Eastern
On December 5th, 2023, Leftover Salmon announced via their social media channels that they would join their good pals The Infamous Stringdusters with special guests The Kitchen Dwellers during two very special shows: April 25th, 2024 at The Eastern in Atlanta, GA. and April 26th, 2024 at The Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, TN. Lucky for this Concerthopper, Atlanta made the cut on this special two-date throw-down with Leftover Salmon, The Infamous Stringdusters, and The Kitchen Dwellers. I know that I may cover a lot of metal bands for Concerthopper because that is what I grew up listening to. But bluegrass/Americana was also mixed in there for good measure as I was growing up.
Staring the night off, The Kitchen Dwellers made a statement with a phenomenal set chock full of some of the best hits from their discography. The Kitchen Dwellers are a progressive bluegrass/jam grass/Galaxy Grass band based out of Bozeman, MT. that has been active since 2010. Currently, The Kitchen Dwellers consists of Torrin Daniels (banjo), Shawn Swain (mandolin), Joe Funk (upright bass), and Max Davies (acoustic guitar). They have released five (5) LPs with Seven Devils being the most current release. I first saw The Kitchen Dwellers last year at Hulaween and fell in love with their sound.
Their style of Galaxy Grass is psychedelic bluegrass mixed with a progressive bluegrass style that always equals a great time. And this evening at The Eastern was no exception as I saw everyone dancing and singing along to The Kitchen Dwellers’ epic performance. If you are a bluegrass/Americana music fan, I recommend you check out The Kitchen Dwellers and listen to them as soon as possible.
Check out The Kitchen Dwellers’ setlist from The Eastern (04/25/2024) below:
·         “Smokestack”>
·         “Pendulum”

Leftover Salmon is a progressive bluegrass/jam band/Zydeco/country band from Boulder, CO. formed in 1989. Leftover Salmon consists of Vince Herman (vocals/guitar/washboard), Drew Emmitt (vocals/mandolin/fiddle/electric guitar), Greg Garrison (vocals/bass), Andy Thorn (banjo/electric banjo/vocals), Alwyn Robinson (drums/vocals), and Jay Sterling (keyboard/dobro). Herman and Emmitt are founding members of Leftover Salmon and have also played together in another band named Left Hand String Band. Leftover Salmon has released ten (10) LPs, one (1) Live album, and one (1) compilation with their latest release entitled Grass Roots (released May 19, 2023).
The crowd let Leftover Salmon know how excited they were as soon as the band took the stage with a ferocious cheer. I put Leftover Salmon up there with the likes of The String Cheese Incident and Greensky Bluegrass regarding how well they jam during their performances. They have been on my rotation for ages now and I do not see them getting removed anytime soon. Especially after getting to witness Leftover Salmon cover not one but two of my favorite artists: George Michael and The Allman Brothers Band.
The crowd was eager to join in as Leftover Salmon performed a flawless cover of “Freedom ’90” by the late George Michael. I am not going to lie, I was also part of the eager crowd ready to join in on the fun being had by the band. Also, Leftover Salmon performed a tribute for the late Dickey Betts by performing “Sweet Melissa”. Seeing Leftover Salmon smile and laugh while they performed their set makes my heart happy because I know that they are just as jovial as we are standing in the crowd. Artists who care about the music and show it while on stage are something that you do not see every day. And when you do, those are the artists that stick with you as you continue this journey, we call life.
Check out this amazing setlist from Leftover Salmon at The Eastern (04/25/2024) in Atlanta, GA.

The Infamous Stringdusters consists of Andy Hall (dobro), Andy Falco (guitar), Chris Pandolfi (banjo), Jeremy Garrett (fiddle), and Travis Book (double bass). They have released thirteen (13) LPs, four (4) EPs, one (1) Live album, and several singles over the years. Their latest release is entitled A Tribute to Flatt & Scruggs and is a fitting tribute to the kings of bluegrass music Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs.
Closing out the evening, The Infamous Stringdusters came on stage to the crowd's roar at The Eastern this Thursday evening. After being warmed up by both The Kitchen Dwellers and Leftover Salmon, you could see the pure joy in the crowd’s faces as The Infamous Stringdusters began their set. Their electrifying setlist covered songs from their nearly two-decade storied career and even a few exciting covers to close the night. I can only imagine the fun and excitement the good folks attending the following night’s event at The Ryman felt seeing this incredible display of musicianship by all three bands.

Read the full article

Zina Lynna Garrison (born November 16, 1963) is a former top-five professional tennis player. She was the women's singles runner-up at Wimbledon in 1990, a three-time Grand Slam mixed doubles champion, and a women's doubles gold medalist and singles bronze medalist in Seoul at the 1988 Olympic Games. She turned professional in 1982 and skipped her graduation at Ross Sterling High School to compete in the French Open, her first tournament as a professional, where she reached the quarterfinals. She was awarded the WTA Newcomer of the Year in 1982. The highlight of her career came in 1990 at Wimbledon, as she defeated Samantha Smith, Cecilia Dahlman, Andrea Leand, Helena Suková, then French Open champion Monica Seles in the quarterfinals 3–6, 6–3, 9–7, and defending Wimbledon champion and world No. 1 Steffi Graf in the semifinals 6–3, 3–6, 6–4 to reach her only Grand Slam singles final, becoming the first African-American woman to do so since Gibson. Moreover, it ended her record 13-time streak of Grand Slam finals. Then, she lost to Navratilova 6–4, 6–1, who thus won her record ninth women's singles title at Wimbledon. She claimed her third mixed doubles title at Wimbledon that year. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence #alphakappaalpha https://www.instagram.com/p/ClBQOKzLPpY/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

On March 22nd 1406 the 8 year old James I, on his way to the safety of France, was captured by pirates off Flamborough Head, what is now Yorkshire, and delivered, or “sold” to the then King of England, Henry IV.
A wee bit background to this is that James was never meant to be King, he was the third of three sons to Robert III, one of which died in infancy, the eldest, David Stewart, Duke of Rothesay who was at the age of 21, appointed “lieutenant” of the kingdom, partly due to the infirmity of his father and at a time of civil unrest and conflict with England. This didn’t go down well with his uncle, Robert, Duke of Albany and in February 1402 Albany arranged for David to be “arrested” and held at Falkland Palace, where he died, apparently of starvation some weeks later. Albany had designs on being King, and although an inquest was held he was absolved of blame, the Duke had more influential friends in the hierarchy than the King.
Oh by the way, King Robert, and his brother Robert Duke Albany, some might have notice have the same christian name, the King was christained John, but chose Robert as his Reginal name due to John being deemed an unlucky name at the time.
Anyway King Robert, under pressure from his brother was fearful for his only remaining son’s life, so put him on a ship hor, what he thought would be the safety of France.
Tensions were high in the country, powers struggles galore were going on and none of them seemed to favour the King so it it was arranging for James to be sent away, he was forced onto The Bass Rock for some time,, this being seen as a sanctuary he was safe there and endured more than a month there before boarding the France-bound Maryenknyght, a ship from Danzig. A few days later the pirates boarded the ship and the young Prince was handed over to become the hostage of King Henry IV of England, his father was at Rothesay Castle when he learned of his son’s capture, and he died soon after on 4 April 1406.So that left his uncle as everything but the name title of King in Scotland and in no hurry to bring James back home.
Now young James may have been a prisoner but he was educated and held as a person of royalty during, what would become an 18 year-long period. While away Albany seized the King’s lands, this deprived ay allies left in Scotland without a means to raise the ransom to bring him home.
And so we come to how King James was used as a pawn against his own countrymen in France. When Henry IV died in 1413 his son Henry V took a harder stance against the Scottish King, he ended his relative freedom and sent him to The Tower of London, but by 1420 The English King loosened the ties and saw that, with Albany sending Scots to support the French in the 100 years war, the Scottish King may have a use. Henry took King James to France and involved him in the war there.
Now there were a loose set of rules used, and still are in way, prisoners were held as such and often swops were arranged after battles, but King James, at the hands of the English had send messengers telling his subjects not to fight against Henry’s army, this was at the siege of Melun, a town southeast of Paris, the Scots ignored these pleas and after the English victory the contingent of Scots were hanged for treason against their king. Henry later, back in England Knighted James on St Georges day. The friendship went so far with the neighbouring kings that Henry appointed the Scottish King as joint commander of the siege of Dreux on 18 July 1421 and on 20 August they received the surrender of the garrison. The Scots at Dreux fled and were pursued but escaped.
By now Henry V was gravely ill, meanwhile in Scotland, Albany had died in 1420 and a majority of the Scots Lords wanted the rightful king back. It took a further 4 years for James to be brought home though, a ransom treaty of £40,000 sterling was agreed at Durham on 28th March 1424 to which James attached his own seal. The king and queen escorted by English and Scottish nobles reached Melrose Abbey on 5 April and were met by the new Duke of Albany who relinquished his governor’s seal of office. King James I was home, but his troubles were far from over……..

JUNETEENTH
The Emancipation Proclamation was an executive order issued September 22, 1862 wherein President Abraham Lincoln freed enslaved Americans in the states of rebellion. It was not until December 1865, however, when the 13th Amendment was ratified, that slavery in the United States became illegal. The reason we celebrate on June 19 is because not all enslaved people in the states of secession were free until Union troops regained control of Texas in June 1865, and on June 19 the last slaves in Galveston, Texas were emancipated. Juneteenth first became a day of celebration in Galveston, where the final Proclamation announcement was made, and was originally called Jubilee Day. It became nationally recognized in 1996 as “Juneteenth Independence Day,” and just this week, on June 17, 2021, Juneteenth became the eleventh American federal holiday. The day is celebrated with learning about African-American heritage, reading of works by noted African-American writers, singing traditional songs, making and eating soul food and barbeque, and taking part in recitations of the Emancipation Proclamation. Go here for a transcript.
Our recognition of the holiday begins with sharing the children’s book Forever Free: The Story of the Emancipation Proclamation by Dorothy Sterling, illustrated by Ernest Crichlow, and published in Garden City, N.Y., by Doubleday & Co. in 1963. The book is a middle-grade collection of educational stories about the history of American slavery and the path to freedom. The author thanks the University of Chicago Press and Benjamin A. Botkin for permission to reprint excerpts from slave stories, originally published in Botkin’s American folklore book Lay My Burden Down: A Folk History of Slavery, originally produced for the Federal Writer’s Project in 1945.
Dorothy Sterling (1913-2008), a Jewish-American author, was a prolific author for both children and adults. She started out in the Federal Writers’ Project with lifestyle photo essays but quickly moved to black history.
“I was excited, but also bewildered and angry,” she wrote. “Why had I never heard of Harriet Tubman or Sojourner Truth, Frederick Douglass or William Lloyd Garrison? Here was a wealth of information, dozens of inspiring stories to tell to young readers.”
Ernest Crichlow (1914-2005) was a black American social realist artist in the Works Project Administration, notable for paintings, murals, illustrations, and prints, including the 1939 lithograph Lovers. He worked in fine arts and illustration with a goal to show the "indomitable inner strength, intrinsic beauty, dignity and essential humanity that exists in the African American community." Helfert, “Joachim Murat”, Chapter 4, Part 5
We left Murat after the defeat of Tolentino and now have a look at what was going on with the other King of the Two Sicilies, the one actually sitting in Sicily, Ferdinand.
Among the motives that led Joachim to consider a speedy retreat to Naples was the impending danger from Sicily.
There were still British garrisons on the island, and Ferdinand IV himself desired it, although he was almost constantly at odds with their leaders, and especially with England's diplomatic representative. A'Court was full of complaints about him. "The foundations of the constitution," he had written to Castlereagh on January 5, 1815, "or rather I should say its rhymes, for it has never had any foundations, are being swept out of the way on all sides, and it appears as if, as soon as Naples is won again, everything will revert to a mild despotism, or else, if the court does not succeed in this, will take on a strictly aristocratic character and make the already overconfident barons fully masters of the king as well as of the people." The parliament had recently convened on October 22, 1814, and had been in session for months into 1815, constantly preoccupied with the financial question, which it had been unable to resolve satisfactorily. There had been some of the most heated exchanges; one day towards the end of January, the deputies literally got into each other's hair, so that the guards had to intervene to break them up. When the English had cancelled the King's subsidies of 400,000 pounds sterling annually, which were to be discontinued on 1 March, the matter had become so urgent that Ferdinand IV had had to resort to an extraordinary measure, which, as we remember, was taken on both sides of the Faro at times of need. By royal decree of 18 February, until the parliament had succeeded in restoring financial order, the salaries of all civil servants and officers due at the end of the month had been suspended, which not only exposed the majority of those initially affected to bitter shortages and worries, but in its further consequences also had a terrible effect on public safety; hardly a night went by in Palermo without houses being broken into, the inhabitants robbed, everything that could be carried away stolen, so that all better-off families were in constant fear of their lives. But all these sufferings and worries now took a back seat to the greater events taking place on the mainland, which were bound to change the situation on the island.
On April 29th, an alliance treaty was concluded in Vienna between Austria, with the accession of Russia and Prussia on the one hand, and the Court of Palermo on the other, by virtue of which the latter, represented by Prince Leopold and Commander Ruffo, undertook to put 30,000 men into the field and to bear all the costs of the campaign. In the second article, the conditions were expressed under which Ferdinand was to take over the government of Naples again: no investigation and persecution, recognition of the sale of state property, guarantee of public debt, keeping the new (Buonapartist) nobility on an equal footing with the old, and generally maintaining all the honours, promotions and pensions conferred by the previous governments. On the evening of May 4, the Prince and the Minister departed from Vienna, and from that moment there was no longer a "King Joachim", no longer a "Queen Caroline", but only a "Mme Murat", a "Marshal Murat", of whom Castlereagh said in the British Parliament that he owed his fall only to the ambiguity of his attitude: "if his sentiments could have been relied upon, he would not have been deprived of his crown". In Bianchi's main quarters, in accordance with the instructions received from Vienna, the royal title was still maintained; only Lord Burghersh, following the example of his compatriot Bentinck, did not allow himself to be deprived of speaking of anything other than "Marshal Murat", even in official dispatches.
On April 30, the day after the Treaty of Vienna, of which Palermo was of course not yet aware, the king announced his imminent departure for Naples in a solemn parliamentary session and demanded the necessary means, which the Estates willingly provided. To his Neapolitans, however, Ferdinand issued a manifesto, dated May 1st, which his supporters were to smuggle in and distribute in both Calabria and the other provinces as well as in the capital. Mistakes that had been made were deplored without any intention of punishing them; peace and harmony, general forgiveness and forgetting, the retention of all civil servants and officers in their ranks were promised; laws were envisaged that would serve as a basis for future state institutions and as a guarantee of civil liberties. Ferdinand did not wish to wait for the final outcome of the war before preparing to sail to Naples; he decided to go to Messina for the time being in order to be closer to the development of events.
A British fleet of 20 warships of various sizes under Admiral Bellew sailed in the Tyrrhenian Sea and kept an eye on the coasts of the mainland.
In Naples, after the first unfavourable news had arrived in April, extensive precautions had been taken to put the capital and Capua in a state of defence, especially Gaëta, where a whole suburb was razed, all the inhabitants who did not know how to provide themselves with food for months were expelled from the city, and the government palace was prepared to receive the royal family. But all these measures, initiated with strength and prudence under the rule of the regent, could no longer help a cause which made the rampant licentiousness in the ranks of the army appear to be already lost.
On May 4, after the second day of the battle of Tolentino, the general retreat of the royals had begun, more sinister than the previous defeat. The Carafa brigade disobeyed its commander and the soldiers ran in groups towards the Neapolitan frontier. General Lecchi had to report to the king that he was no longer able to keep his soldiers in obedience; the situation was no better with the legion of the wounded d'Ambrosio; Carascosa alone led his "legion" back in good order. The closer they came to the borders of their homeland, the more numerous the deserters became. The onset of severe frost, "not like in the Italian spring but like in the gruesome winter of Switzerland", as Colletta puts it, plus heavy rain that drove all the water over the banks and thus caused stagnation in the columns, were as much occasions as cloaks for the desertion. With bitter sorrow, the king saw such a beautiful army, his pride and his joy, disappear before his eyes, dissolve into its components; his otherwise cheerful countenance, smiling happily for everyone approaching, was now darkened by heavy grief and large tears streamed from his eyes down his cheeks. It was at the passage over the Tronto, at the border of his kingdom, which he was to cross again as a defeated man, where the word "abdicate" was spoken before him for the first time. In the first surge of his anger he wanted to strike down with his own hand the general d'Aquine, who had hitherto always played the humble servant; but he restrained himself and merely relieved him of the command which he had not held with great glory. The king, for his own part, even in this ignominious retreat, often performed miracles of valour. General Colletta relates an instance in which the king, who was brave to the last moment and the last in the train, helped with his own hand to barricade a road at the entrance of which a detachment of Austrian cavalry was charging and firing. But Joachim could not be everywhere, and where he was not, there was nothing but disaster. The imperials made one capture after another. At Lanciano, 23 cannons, 10 howitzers, 20 ammunition carts and their crew fell into their hands. Manhès, who was only strong when he was raging, abandoned his position at the Garigliano, the important border river, on 6 May, without having seen anything of the enemy, so that the Queen relieved him of his command and persuaded the Minister of War to take his place in the field. On May 10, Joachim was in Bopoli, on the 11th he held a review of his troops; he still had 14,000 men with 16 guns. But already the apostasy in the provinces began to spread, which also had an effect on the ranks of the army. In those days, an appeal arrived from Isernia from the sub-intendant Milizia, in which the soldiers were called upon to abandon Murat's cause. When the king heard of this he exclaimed painfully, "And I, who have done nothing but good to this man!" He made a last attempt to retain the loyalty of his people and sent the General and State Councillor Colletta to the capital, where, together with Minister Zurlo, he was to draft the outlines of a constitutional charter; but Joachim urged them not to be too generous with the concessions to the people.

Just for fun, I have a question. If you were either transported or say you lived in the Attack on Titan world, which regiment would you really choose? As much as I'd personally want to join the Scouts, I'm defiantly not cut out for it- physically or mentally. I probably wouldn't join the MP either because they seem like snobby assholes soilders. So I'd probably join the Garrison. I am curious about which you'd choose
Ooh, I had to think about this for a bit before answering! Right off the top of my head, I would have to say the Scouts - but I think I’m a little biased in saying that, since they’re my favorite branch of the military. I guess it would really depend on what happens to me in that world once I was transported. If someone I loved was killed by the Titans, I would probably take the route Eren took and swear revenge on them. But in the field, I would probably freeze on the spot like Hannes and Armin did when they first saw a Titan.
The Military Police is definitely out of the question, since they don’t really seem to do anything other than slack off and shove their responsibilities onto others. Annie was probably the only one who ever did any work in the regiment; whenever I watch the Lost Girls OVA with her, I’m always amazed that she found Carly within a day when the rest of the MPs couldn’t even be bothered to look into her case.
I like a lot of the soldiers in the Garrison (Hannes, Anka, and Rico being the ones that immediately come to mind). Pyxis seems like a lot of fun to be around, despite his alcohol problems, but his friendship with Anka is borderline adorable (I don’t really ship them, I just love their interactions). But the Garrison seems a little too laid-back for my liking. I have to be doing something constantly or else I’ll go crazy.
In the end, I have to go with the Scouts. And not because I get to look at Levi all day. To me, they’re the only branch that actually seems concerned with serving humanity to the best of their abilities. And none of the soldiers are corrupt, which is a huge plus. Even with their less-than-sterling reputation with the rest of the citizens (even before the series starts), I would have to choose the Scouts! Thanks for the ask! 😊

Lance said that Shiro was his hero. And after they get together S discovers L has kept an autographed photo of him since joining the garisson and thats when he learns L really idolized him. And L all emabressed accidentally spills everything, and goes onto say how he hopes it doesn't chnage how S feels abt him and he promises hes not some creepy fan boy despite the fact that he fanatasized abt him for hours- and oops didn't mean to spill that. But S makes a couple more dreams of his come true 😏
Haha it reminds me of THIS PROMPT  (So it’s just barely pre-relationship)
But just imagine after that dinner with everyone, Shiro finds himself back in Lance’s room looking over his posters with a soft smile. He’s even got one signed, which means Shiro met him before all this but didn’t recognize him when they met again later. Lance is so wholesome and sweet keeping these old posters. A cute innocent fanboy.  And then Shiro finds…the calendar.
He doesn’t know how Lance got a hold of this. It was a joke thing he made with his friends when they first passed their pilots exams. Sexy up and coming pilots of the Galaxy Garrison. Shiro flushes with shame and embarrassment when he finds his picture in it. He was Mr. February. In an apron and boxers with cake batter all over the place. But there written on the page is Lance’s young handwriting. ‘I’d lick every drop from this god, not gonna lie’ and ‘patty cake patty cake baker’s MAN!
Lance spots him with the calendar and is MORTIFIED. He snatches it out of Shiro’s hands and rolls it up with a nervous laugh.
“Geez I…forgot I had that,” he says with his own blush of shame.
“Guess you were a big fan,” Shiro chuckles nervously.
“Y-Yeah but…uh…I’m not like that anymore, you know?”
“Like what?”
“A starstruck moron,” Lance shrugs. “I…really admired you as a pilot but I…well, you’re good looking. It was hard not to admire the outside just as much as the inside. I mean–stupid Lance! Why did you say that?!”
“It’s okay Lance,” Shiro smiles, still a little flushed. “How did you get that?”
“One of the cadets at the Garrison found it in his dorm in a closet. A whole box of them,” Lance tells him. “Guess someone never got around to selling them.”
They were supposed to be burned, Shiro remembers. They got in so much trouble for making them and the upper command ordered them incinerated so that they wouldn’t ruin the galaxy garrison’s sterling reputation. Shiro didn’t even keep one in case it came back to bite him in the ass.
“He sold it to me before he got caught with them. Then he was forced to shred them all,” Lance remembers. “Guess I’ve got the only surviving copy. Good thing too. It definitely helped me get through some rough–SHUT UP LANCE! OH MY GOD!”
Shiro laughs and laughs at a very flustered Lance who keeps wringing the calendar into a smaller and smaller tube in his nervousness.
“I sound like a freak don’t I? Admitting that I…used this to think about you,” Lance shakes his head in shame. “Sorry.”
“Don’t worry about it Lance,” Shiro tells him with a soft hand to his shoulder. “There are worse things than fantasizing about your idol.”
“Yeah?”
“Yeah,” Shiro nods. “I wouldn’t be so hard on yourself. You’re not the only person in the world who’s fantasized about another.”
“You mean you did it too?” Lance asks curiously.
“Did? Still do,” Shiro admits with a flush to his cheeks. “You see there’s this amazing pilot. He’s younger than me but so skilled. I can’t help but admire his rapid progress as a pilot and as a person. Sometimes…I think about what it’d be like to be his special someone.”
“Oh yeah?” Lance starts to smile and sheepishly looks at the ground. “You…think he’s skilled?”
“At a lot more things than piloting, I’m sure,” Shiro winks and Lance grins. “Maybe one day…he can show me something new. And exciting.”
“I bet he’d like that,” Lance smiles up at him. “Maybe he’ll do that next Saturday…after dinner and a movie. Just the two of them.”
“Sounds like a date,” Shiro says and takes Lance’s hand in his.
“It sure does.”

FART AND FURIOUS
California congressman Eric Swalwell farted live on national TV during an interview. It was the fart heard round the world. If it were a scandal it could be called ‘Fart and Furious.’
Naturally, a cascade of jokes ensued. One message board wag said, Eric knows more about gas than Hunter Biden. I’m not a fan of fart jokes, but Swalwell deserves all of them. He regularly calls for Trump’s impeachment based on hearsay and imaginary evidence. He said Joe Biden is a saint and Trump was insulting Joe’s sterling reputation by accusing Joe and Hunter of impropriety. Well, Hunter was getting over a million dollars per year from Burisma, even though he had no qualifications whatsoever. His father made sure a prosecutor was fired before Hunter faced investigation for corruption. THAT was the true Ukrainian quid pro quo, and it didn’t stop there. Thanks to his dad’s sway, Hunter made out like a bandit in China, too.

Swalwell loves government and pushing people around. The smug punk told gun owners that they were outgunned. He said big government had nukes and so citizens may as well turn in their firearms. For this reprehensible statement alone, Swalwell deserves perpetual ridicule.
