Ive been rereading @thatsoneginger 's Machines Don't Bleed trilogy and have been getting hit by massive waves of nostalgia.

Its rly weird looking back on the fanart I made for it ages ago and comparing that to now, it makes me that more emotional sjdjkemf :') It really is a special thing to come back to a formative work and experiencing it with a brain that's (mostly) finished cooking.

Thank you for all the memories, Chaos. Your mercenaries will always have a very special place in my heart 🥹

14. If you could see one of your fics adapted into a visual medium, such as comic or film, which fan fic would you pick?

Heh. I mean, the last thing I wrote (I've been publishing old fics on AO3 to archive them, but Scar Tissue is my only new fic since February) is a comic, but I guess Fairy Tales and Hokum with all its fault could more or less stand on its own as a movie or a comic? I initially wrote it as a kind of sequel to The Mummy Returns four or five years before the third movie came out, so. I mean it's a bit of a mess, but I'm very fond of it.

Silent Spy and Nath, 95?

One of the things Silent Spy admired about Nath was his incredible concentration. However, it sometimes lead to situations like this.

He’d first leaned over Nath (who was entirely engrossed in drawing a picture of one of Hippie’s chickens) with just his jacket off and the top two buttons of his shirt undone.

Nath didn’t notice. Not surprising really, he’d never been good at picking up subtle cues.

Silent Spy would just have to make things a bit more obvious.

Next he had his top off, and rested a hand on Nath’s shoulder as though just stopping by to admire his artwork (which admittedly, was very good.)

Nath paused to squeeze the hand on his shoulder, giving a small, happy hum. Nothing more though.

Not even when all Silent Spy’s clothes were gone and he reached right across the table under the guise of clearing away a coffee mug.

Really?

Really???

Right. Silent Spy neatly made the bed, draped himself across it elegantly, and threw a shoe at Nath’s head.

‘Ouch! What the hell? What are you up- Oh. Ooh, hello.’

Pick any passage of 500 words or less from any fanfic I’ve written, and I’ll give you the equivalent of a DVD commentary on that snippet!

/Okay let’s go!! It’s technically 600+ words but eh i’m not complaining/

The two waited for their drinks in silence, watched them be poured in silence, and drank in silence.

/My co-writer @longliveteufort asked whether Sniper was drinking fancy draft beer that someone poured for you or the stuff you pour yourself, and frankly I had no idea, i don’t drink, so I just kept it as vague as possible. No one’s called me out on it yet so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ /

The air was tense. A RED and a BLU walking into a bar sounded like the set-up for some violent joke, not whatever this was.

/One of the best things about this ship when you take the RED vs BLU angle is the visual contrast of colours that represent this Tom and Jerry rivalry that seeps so strongly into their relationship./

Sniper saw himself, sitting in this moment. He imagined what would happen if one of his teammates walked in right now. The image weighed on him. He knew the risks. He’d read the very large, very bold section in his contract: NO FRATERNISING WITH ANY INDIVIDUALS UNDER THE EMPLOY OF BLU AND ITS SUBSIDIARIES UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES. And yet…

/In proper tf2 fashion, I cannot imagine the buckwild fine print in their working contracts. I would defs be interested in reading a fic about the just reciting what they look like. Probably a lot of stuff about hats./

Sniper had to admit that there was something that intrigued him about Spy. So much time spent, maybe even wasted, at each other’s throats. This was likely incredibly stupid, but spending time with Demo and the rest of RED had done Sniper good, great even. The difference he felt in himself as a person just by knowing he had people who gave a shit about him and didn’t expect him to be anything more than what he already was - it was remarkable.

/Something VERY important to me for this fic was establishing Sniper having a good support network. Although it’s quite cathartic reading sniperpsy fics about Sniper being some loner badass who’s too proud to admit how miserable he is, whenever I read them the only impression i get is ‘this dude is in no shape for a romantic relationship and needs some therapy.’ I wanted to go for something a bit different in this story through exploring the themes of how we cope hardship and the importance of support systems./

But, there was also something to be said about how, from the beginning, it was the BLU Spy who for a long time used to be the person he spoke to the most, even if it was through trading insults. He’d been spending the last few days contemplating not just the similarities of their jobs, but maybe even their positions in life.

/A big question when it comes to any romance/slowburn story is asking why these characters are initially drawn to each other. For Sniper, the thing that @longliveteufort and I are starting to tease out here is that for Sniper, it’s him projecting his own solitude onto Spy. He’s gotten so much emotional fulfilment by letting himself be vulnerable to others. And since the BLU Spy is someone Sniper has interacted with the most before becoming friends with Demo, in Sniper’s eyes it’s only a natural progression that he’d try to clear the air with his arch-rival/

Call it a hunch, but maybe there was a mote of kinship there that could be kindled into something.

/Something everyone has gone through but not a lot of media tends to portray: The friend-crush./

Silence thick, Spy made no move to speak. His demeanour and expression very clearly said the same thing: Tell me why I’m here, now.

“Spy, I don’t know you very well,” Sniper said. “And, that’s why I wanted us to meet here.”

Spy went very still, face darkening. He sighed as he leant forward on the counter, rubbing his face. “Fils de pute,” he muttered.

Spy sat back up and looked at Sniper. “So, it’s an interrogation then.”

/As sniper is about to learn, he can’t just pull a Demoman and get chatting with someone over drinks. He’s still quite new to this whole friendship thing, let alone understanding the nuances of what’s appropriate for different people. Especially such a closed-off, paranoid person like Spy. Baby steps./

Sniper opened his mouth, but no words came out. The absolute certainty with which Spy spoke was disarming. “Uh—“

“You invited me here because you didn’t wish to cause a scene.” Spy reached into his coat. “Not because of social mores about decorum, but because of the neutrality rules. If we fought, the residents would complain, our employers would be notified, and it would be très gênant for both of us.”

/Even thought this chapter is focalised through Sniper, we can clearly see that Spy is not one to trust others. A very weird meeting times a very suspicious person like spy equals this conclusion Spy comes to due to his background/

He pulled out his cigarette case. He spoke languidly, like he was being forced to recite a tax return and was bored already. “Next, you will tell me I can’t leave, because the rest of your RED brethren are waiting outside.”

He whipped open the case, pulling out a cigarette. “Thus, the only choice I’m left with is to be very graciously moved to a location outside of Teufort, so if I didn’t tell you what you wished to hear now, you could ask me questions there in a more persuasive manner.”

/This whole speech when I was drafting this was originally one large paragraph. Writing tip: it’s so important to break up big pieces of dialogue with action, folks!! It draws out the tension, and you can fine-tune character’s acting so the reader can envision tone and even what they’re thinking. And it’s just a lot more cinematic to boot!/

Spy exchanged his case for his lighter, lit his cigarette and took a drag. He breathed out, continuing: “And finally, they used you specifically as bait due to our pre-established relationship of proverbial pissing contests.” There was a little impressed quirk to his mouth as he put away the case. “I have to say, it’s not bad. Certainly not great, and very obviously a trap, but not bad. /(Whenever Spy has a chance to condescend, he MUST pounce on it. Dickhead.)/ Whoever masterminded this whole thing must have had at least a few neurons rattling around in his skull, so I know for a fact it wasn’t you.”

/@longliveteufort helped me with this final line. Spy originally was gonna go on this tangent of asking whether it was the RED engineer that came up with it, but it dragged the conversation, so she rightfully suggested to trim it down and boy was she right! The line has a much better punch now./

You've been asking a lot of people about their OCs. How about you? Do you have any fave OCs you'd like to show off?

Goodness yes, these days I’m having a lot of feelings about my Greenport OCs in general!!

But if I had to show one off I gotta say I just love my Pernelle so much, she’s such a complex character (maybe too complex for my very limited writing abilities if i’m honest lmao), she seems like your usual lovely old lady at first - which she is, to an extent - but she’s so devilishly smart, and definitely has a darker side that most don’t even imagine. She’s very ready to do bad things for the ‘greater good’, and she’s ready to let go of the good to protect herself if need be.

She’s not a bad or good person, she’s just.. Very complex, and she’s very cool, and she’s one of my fav OCs and I love her :’) ♥

during my freshman year of college, i helped out at the cat club on campus in feeding the feral cats at marked locations. there was one black and white cat named dapper dan i kept seeing in the distance, watching me fill up the food station, but he never got close until it was the last day i was at the station. he let me pet him and i was so endeared until i saw a giant tick on his back and immediately noped out of there

anyways he was later taken in and captured because he was so friendly, which lead the club to believe he was a stray and not feral. someone later adopted him and his name is now chester

1. Favorite character?

Oh, gosh... I love them all, especially Sniper, Spy, and Medic, but I will have to go with Sniper. Stinky bushman who is a professional assassin for a living and isolates himself in a van in his offtime? Yep, that’s him. For some inexplicable reason I just love him so much, from that terribly difficult to draw hat to the way he mutters to himself when doing his job, he is such an amazing character.

2. Least favorite character

Oh, yikes, that is a hard one- I equally love all nine of these idiotic mercenaries and most of their employers.

The one character that I think I would express true dislike to, however, is probably C!Heavy.

I just don’t like his attitude towards the situation, and his desire to gain power and control(?) over everything (such as the life extending machines). How he rose up in Gray Mann’s place so quickly is just something I disliked about him. (Also, HE KILLED SNIPER, which is NOT OKAY)

3. 5 favorite ships (canon or non-canon)

Heavy/Medic, Sniper/Spy, Soldier/Zhanna, Engineer/Pyro And Maybe Soldier/Demo HANDS DOWN.

These are ALL of my favorite couples, and I will not hesitate to defend my choices >:3

4. Character I find most attractive

So there’s this one mysterious masked snarky Frenchman...

5. Character I would marry

Oh gosh, it’s GOTTA be Engineer. I know I said Sniper was my favorite character and Spy was the most attractive, but like.. Engineer has really good qualities that would be great in a marriage. He seems understanding and even-tempered, and very smart. Also, he looks like he’d be able to cook some damn good breakfast, don’t ask me why.

6. Character I would be best friends with

Honestly? Probably Scout. I’m a better listener than I am a talker, and I wouldn’t mind having a whole bunch of information dumped on me. He looks like he’d be willing to have fun, doing stupid things that I wouldn’t usually do.

For a similar reason to the second one, I also think Demo. He also looks like he’d be willing to have some damn good fun.

7. A random thought

mess with the crabbo, you get the stabbo

As an added bonus, when prompted, my younger sister just simply said ‘Scout’. Nothing else came after that, just ‘Scout’. I appreciate that.

8. Unpopular opinion:

Medic does have a pretty big heart underneath all the seemingly insane stuff. (Possibly one or more hearts, in fact, and not all of them may be human)

9. Canon OTP

Since we STILL do not have the 7th comic, I currently only have one canon OTP and that is Soldier/Zhanna.

10. Non-Canon OTP

It’s either Sniperspy or Heavymedic. I can’t choose just one.

11. Most badass character

I had to think a lot about this, but in the end, it came to Miss Pauling, hands down. If I were in her shoes, I would be scared to absolute death, but she is able to give threatening speeches to dying men and fight off an army of robots alongside those under her employment. I think that’s pretty cool.

12. Most Epic Villain

Charles Darling isn’t really much of a villain (yet?), but he definitely seems to act like one, holding a regal stance and a sly look when he’s getting exactly what he wants. Like a super villain, except one who doesn’t wreck havoc, just keeps a whole bunch of animals in a room.

HOWEVER, if the Administrator turns out to be some type of villain (I’m not exactly sure yet) then she’d make the top of the list, for obvious reasons.

13. Pairing I am not a fan of.

Anything in which Scout is shipped with a merc other than Sniper. They’re all so much older than him, I don’t really like it. ESPECIALLY but not limited to Scoutspy, because that is incest. (Unless, of course, you make an AU or an OC that puts them as not father and son but similar ages. But still, I don’t know if I’d be able to read a story without wondering about the canon stuff.)

14. Character that I feel like the writers screwed up (in one way or another)

I don’t really think the writers screwed any characters up much. They somehow found a way to fit every single character to be a large part of the story, and I find that really awesome.

However, there are a few flaws with various characters. The one I’m choosing to talk about is probably C!Heavy.

C!Heavy is revealed to be the true villain in the operation that Gray Mann set up after he kills him and takes his life extending machine away. But, other than living forever, he seems to have no other motive (that I can see). Extending one’s life seems like a fickle thing for a villain to want, especially if they have no visible reason for it.

15. Favorite Friendship

DEFINITELY Demoman and Soldier. They seem like they would be such a chaotic pair and I love it.

16. Character I most identify with

Ooh, that’s a tough one.

Though, if I was FORCED to choose, I would choose Miss Pauling, for reasons unknown. I have nowhere NEAR the badass level she has, but it just seems right for some reason.

Weird explanation, I know.

17. Character I wish I could be

Also Miss Pauling. She’s just so frickin’ badass, I honestly wish I could be like her.

Hey, anon who asked me about how ChaosandMayhem/ @thatsoneginger was doing a while ago, I hope you can read this, but she's fine! We talked briefly a couple of weeks ago and as I suspected, she's super busy with RL stuff, mostly good. I don't think a return to Tumblr soon is in the works, but she should have a little more time for fan stuff this winter. She said she was very touched that someone reached out 💖
