“First, H.R. 6090 could result in colleges and universities suppressing a wide variety of speech critical of Israel or in support of Palestinian rights in an effort to avoid investigations by the Department and the potential loss of funding, even where such speech is protected and does not qualify as harassment. Even without H.R. 6090, advocacy groups have already filed or threatened to file numerous Title VI complaints and lawsuits, alleging that colleges have violated Title VI merely by condoning Palestinian rights groups, events, and advocacy. For example, in September 2023, the pro-Israel group Santa Fe Middle East Watch claimed that the University of New Mexico's anthropology department would violate the New Mexico Governor's executive order using this same definition of antisemitism if they hosted Mohammed El-Kurd, a Palestinian poet and writer currently serving as the Nation's Palestine correspondent.
Moreover, in February 2020, the David Horowitz Freedom Center sent a letter to Pomona and Pitzer college officials alleging “the colleges’ liability under Title VI” for, among other things, co-sponsoring a Students for Justice in Palestine event featuring a screening of the film ‘Gaza Fights for Freedom,’ and funding a panel on “Perspectives on Colleges and the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict.”
Additionally, there have been multiple instances of university censorship of pro-Palestinian expression after the October 7 Hamas attack on Israel. These include the University of Pennsylvania denying a screening of a documentary which raises concerns some young Jews have about Israel's treatment of Palestinians, and Brandeis University banning the student group Students for Justice in Palestine.* Equating criticism of Israel with antisemitism by law, under a threat of investigation, will only create more fear in schools, prompting administrators to silence this speech regardless of whether it is protected.
Second, even where administrators do not take formal action, students and their organizations, faculty, and university staff may be deterred from speaking and organizing on these issues. Activists would be understandably hesitant to engage in political expression criticizing Israel or advocating for Palestinian rights if they have reason to believe the federal government will actively investigate such expression in connection with harassment complaints and investigations.
Finally, the bill would likely inspire an increasing number of complaints focused on constitutionally protected criticism of Israel. These complaints will not only cause schools to limit speech out of fear, but will also force both the Department and covered universities to devote time and resources to addressing complaints about constitutionally protected speech, instead of meritorious harassment complaints.”

I used keyword: universities in Project2025.
To nobody's surprise the censorship across US campuses is fueled by religious extremism, capitalism, and nationalism. Even worse, things still seem to be going according to plan for project 2025 (huge thanks to Biden for that btw).
Tumblr media
My guess is that accusations of infiltration and having spies amongst their ranks will be an excuse we start seeing in news media a lot more often as both a method of discrediting university protesters and pushing all these laws to "protect Americans" from "foreign adversaries" and "national threats"

House Passes Bill That Conflates Criticism of Israel With Antisemitism
The legislation adopts a definition of antisemitism that could be used by the Department of Education to crackdown on college protestsby Dave DeCamp May 1, 2024 at 4:50 pm ET Categories NewsTags Israel, Palestine
The House on Wednesday overwhelmingly passed a bill that conflates criticism of the modern state of Israel with antisemitism and will mandate that definition be used by the Department of Education when enforcing federal anti-discrimination laws.
The bill could be used to crack down on pro-Palestine protesters at college campuses across the country, who have been falsely labeled “antisemitic” despite Jewish students participating in the protests.
The legislation adopts the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s (IHRA) definition of antisemitism, which lists “drawing comparisons of contemporary Israeli policy to that of the Nazis” as an example of antisemitism.
The IHRA also defines antisemitism as applying “double standards” to Israel by “requiring of it a behavior not expected or demanded of any other democratic nation” and “denying the Jewish people their right to self-determination” by “claiming that the existence of a State of Israel is a racist endeavor.”
The bill passed in a vote of 320-91 and now heads to the Senate for a vote, and received “no” votes from 21 Republicans and 70 Democrats. Opponents said they voted against the legislation because it threatened the First Amendment.
“Antisemitism is wrong, but this legislation is written without regard for the Constitution, common sense, or even the common understanding of the meaning of words,” Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) wrote on X ahead of the vote.
Gaetz pointed to another part of the IHRA’s definition that lists “claims of the Jews killing Jesus” as an example of antisemitism. “The Gospel itself would meet the definition of antisemitism under the terms of this bill!” he said.
Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) opposed the bill and said it was put forward with the intent to “increase prosecutions of activity on campuses.”
Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-NY) also criticized the bill. “Speech that is critical of Israel alone does not constitute unlawful discrimination,” he said. “By encompassing purely political speech about Israel into Title VI’s ambit, the bill sweeps too broadly.”
Nadler made similar comments last year when opposing a bill that conflated anti-Zionism with antisemitism, noting that there are Jews who oppose Zionism. “This resolution ignores the fact that even today, certain orthodox Hasidic Jewish communities—the Satmars in New York and others—as well as adherents of the pre-state Jewish labor movement have held views that are at odds with the modern Zionist conception,” he said.

PLEASE CALL YOUR SENATORS!
HR 6090 adopts the IHRA definition of antisemitism, codifying criticism of Israel as antisemitic. This is wildly unconstitutional, obviously, and we need all hands on deck.
Your local orgs may have call scripts, but here’s an example below you can just address it to your own senators!

Why American Jews Should Oppose the Antisemitism Awareness Act
Hatred in the U.S. is real. The bill that passed the House will only make it worse.
Last week, the House of Representatives passed the Antisemitism Awareness Act. But American Jews who care about fighting antisemitism should be against it. HR 6090, the Antisemitism Awareness Act, passed 320–91. Seventy Democrats and 21 Republicans voted against it (including Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, who noted that she was against antisemitism but wanted to protect her Christian right to say that Jews killed Jesus). The legislation would see the adoption of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s definition of antisemitism. There are some who have long opposed codifying this particular definition because it comes with troublesome examples, most of which have to do with Israel. These include things like “denying the Jewish people their right to self-determination, e.g., by claiming that the existence of a State of Israel is a racist endeavor,” “applying double standards by requiring of it a behavior not expected or demanded of any other democratic nation,” and “drawing comparisons of contemporary Israeli policy to that of the Nazis.” Under this definition, then, Masha Gessen’s New Yorker essay on Holocaust memory and Israeli policy in Gaza would be considered antisemitic under the law. Gessen is a Jewish descendant of Holocaust survivors and victims. There are many, including Zionist Jews, who have long warned that the IHRA standards could be used to chill pro-Palestinian speech. After the House passed the bill, Americans for Peace Now CEO Hadar Susskind warned in a statement:
Antisemitism is the hatred of Jews. Unfortunately, one doesn’t need to look far to find it these days. But the supporters of this bill are looking in the wrong places. They aren’t interested in protecting Jews. They are interested in supporting right-wing views and narratives on Israel and shutting down legitimate questions and criticisms by crying “antisemite” at everyone, including Jews, who oppose the Netanyahu, Ben-Gvir, Smotrich government.
Congressman Jerry Nadler of New York also opposed the bill:
I will take lectures from no one about the need for vigorous efforts to fight antisemitism on campus or anywhere else. I am also a deeply committed Zionist. … But while this definition and its examples may have useful applications in certain contexts, by effectively codifying them into Title VI, this bill threatens to chill constitutionally protected speech. Speech that is critical of Israel—alone—does not constitute unlawful discrimination. By encompassing purely political speech about Israel into Title VI’s ambit, the bill sweeps too broadly.
I agree with all of this. I think a bill that effectively restricts speech on the country’s foreign policy has no business being passed in the United States. This bill would be a problem if it only restricted Palestinian Americans from describing their families’ histories or present realities. That codifying this definition in a bill fighting antisemitism would also deem many Jews antisemitic—including the quarter of American Jews who in 2021 said Israel is an apartheid state—undercuts its stated reason for being. But I also think you do not have to disagree with the IHRA—you can, in fact, feel that this definition is a sound one—to believe that this law is a mistake. All you have to do is remember that, as a minority in the United States, American Jews have been as safe and secure as we are because of liberalism, pluralism, and civil rights. American Jews take pride in American Jewish participation in the Civil Rights Movement, and for good reason. But it isn’t just that some American Jews have stood up for civil rights, though that is true. Protection of civil rights has also helped American Jews. When American Jews stood up for freedom of expression and the right to be full political participants, they were also standing up for their own rights. In 1963, speaking before the March on Washington, Rabbi Joachim Prinz said, “America must not become a nation of onlookers. America must not remain silent. Not merely Black America, but all of America. It must speak up and act … not for the sake of the Black community but for the sake of the image, the idea, and the aspiration of America itself.” He might have added “for the sake of every minority community.” Freedom of religion and the right to express that religion in public by, say, freely speaking out against prayer in schools has long protected Jewish equality in American life. The same goes for the freedom to protest American domestic or foreign policy—against, for example, the Vietnam War (as many American Jews did). These fundamental rights are a large part of why American Jews are free to participate in public life as both Americans and Jews.

The violent clearing of US university encampments demanding divestment from Israel and protesting the ongoing genocide in Gaza has taken a vicious turn at UCLA. On Wednesday morning, a large group of pro-Israel supporters attacked the UCLA protesters – with 2x4s, metal poles, firecrackers, pepper spray, and tear gas while some screamed ‘second Nakba’. The pro-israel attackers played audio of babies crying, presumably referencing the Israeli Occupation Forces repeated use of ‘crying’ quadcopter drones to lure Palestinians out to help an infant in need, only to kill them. The UCLA police department retreated and locked themselves in a building, refusing entry to journalists as well, while the mob attacked the students *for four hours*. In addition to the melee on student protesters, four campus journalists were attacked by the pro-Israel mob. Last night and this morning, UCPD, LAPD, LASD, and CHP riot police began attempting to dismantle the camp. After being initially forced to retreat by students, over 500 police swept the quad and area buildings, using rubber bullets, concussion grenades, and paper spray to disperse protesters and arrest dozens. Multiple witnesses report UCPD blocking entry of EMS, and report onsite medics treating over 100; 25 people have been hospitalized. UCLA has cancelled classes for the day. The UCLA police department budget is over $22 million dollars a year, which continues to increase despite years of brutality, harassment, discrimination, and surveillance complaints. The purported justification for suppressing the exercise of free speech on campus is that some Jewish and Israeli students have expressed fears for their safety, disregarding the fact that many/most protest groups have a large and often central Jewish presence. Yesterday: security stood by as people attacked UCLA Gaza solidarity encampment.Today: police violently attack UCLA encampment.Let's not pretend any of this is about student safety.Overnight, hundreds have been arrested across other universities, including Dartmouth, Fordham, University of New Hampshire, Stony Brook, University of Buffalo, CUNY, UW-Madison, UT-Dallas, and more. On Tuesday, NYC’s Mayor Adams, who is currently under investigation for corruption and had vowed to bring Israeli tactics to the city’s police force, sent a small army of militarized security forces to disperse a Columbia University protest against the war; three hundred protesters were arrested. The US House just overwhelmingly passed HR 6090, which ridiculously expands the definition of antisemitism to include criticism of Israel.Meanwhile, Netanyahu promises a forthcoming Rafah invasion and continues strikes across Gaza, where ~1.7 million are sheltering, making obvious the lie of ongoing diplomatic negotiations. The US weapons shipments and Israeli genocide of Palestinians in Gaza marches on.https://thepostmillennial.com/breaking-lapd-clear-rioters-gaza-camp-from-ucla-campus https://jacobin.com/2024/05/palestine-crackdown-authoritarianism-university-policehttps://www.latimes.com/california/story/2024-05-01/four-student-journalists-attacked-by-counterprotesters-at-ucla
