Dark Skin Directory
I did one of these for my sideblog BlackFemmeCharacterDependency (BFCD) and... While it’ll take longer on this end to do because there are more prominent figures here than on that one, I thought it would be good to also have one for my main...
EDIT: Okay, so the one that I did for BFCD does not work, so I am posting this one to see if it works, and if not, they’ll both be WIPS until I have the time to repair them

Cursed child year 3 review
I don’t know if anyone cares or even reads these anymore, but I thought why not.
On Saturday the 4th May I saw Harry Potter and the cursed child in London for the second time ever (yeah I know I’m late posting this 😂) I missed this play so much since I last saw it in 2017 and it was 100% worth the trip. This play is just so amazing and never fails to amaze me.
The first time I saw the play the original London cast still played and it was really something special to watch them. So I was excited to see a different cast for the first time as I’m just very used to the original one.
This time I saw the 3rd year cast and thought I give a little review about this cast too and compare their interpretations with the ones of the original cast I saw the first time.
This time I knew what to expect, but the stage affects still managed to totally blow me away (AGAIN). I don’t know how they do it, the whole play is so beautifully choreographed and designed. It’s just magical. No wonder they won so many Olivier and Tony Awards. The production value of this play is simply superb. I know I should be over this, but as it’s my second time seeing the show after a long time in person, it still got me again.
I still love this story so much and it’s just so beautifully written. The script really shines when it’s performed on stage and gives the script a whole other dimension. Although the entire play is over 5 hours long (which is quite some time sitting in a theatre), I was hooked the entire time and there wasn’t even one minute I was bored (I know, no surprise considering how much I love it).
As good as the play may be the experience is still very dependent on the cast. Without a good cast not even a good script and good special effects can save the story. So I will move on to one of the most important parts of cursed child: the actors.
Overall the year 3 cast is really great. As a whole I wasn’t into this cast as much as I was into the original one due to some things I will explain below, but I think they did an amazing job and told the story very well. All of them are great actors and totally deserve to be in this play. Individually a lot were really extraordinary and as good or even better than the first cast I saw, but in comparison to the original cast their interpretations didn’t perfectly blend together as well, which isn’t any of their faults. I hope in year 4 cast this gets better as the actors I thought fitted together very well will stay and some of the other actors will go.
Harry Potter - Jamie Ballard
Tumblr media
I really loved Jamie Ballard as Harry. He had one of the hardest jobs as Jamie Parker is one of my favorite original cast members, but he did really great. At fists in act one I needed some time to get used to him (as he looks and talks very differently from Parker) and he was a bit stiff at the start (and the pacing was a little bit off). In the blanket scene I felt he could do more (as it’s my favorite scene from Jamie Parker) and I wasn’t really sure what to think of him after act one (although his Scorpius was amazing, he nailed imitating Jonathan).
But then act 2 happened and he really stepped up his game. In the last three Acts he was simply amazing and I got more used to his Harry and how different he is from Jamie Parker. Ballard isn’t as emotional/loud and as hot headed, but I really enjoyed his more softer but still emotional take on the role. As much as I love Parker he tended to be very rough at times and Ballard’s softer approach worked really great and was a new breath of air. He made Harry his own and didn’t just copy the actors before him. After act 2 I was 100% sold and in love with his Harry. He isn’t as much book Harry as Jamie Parker is (he is just the most perfect book Harry adaptation ever), but his own version of Harry worked really great in the play and made Harry very sympathetic and lovable. That’s why theatre is so great, it gives us many different interpretations of one character and let us see the same character in a different light.
Albus Potter - Joe Idris-Roberts
Tumblr media
I really liked Joe as Albus. He wasn’t one of my favorites from this cast, but he was good. Some parts worked really well with him especially Albus‘ more calm and dry moments (he gets Albus‘ dry humor spot on). His Albus is more collected and logical than Sam Clemmett‘s and his leader qualities really shine through.
Sadly the more emotional scenes didn’t work as well for him. The blanket scene could have been more emotional from him and especially the library scene lacked something. In this scene Albus really has to be sorry and understand Scorpius better. It’s a very emotional scene and Jonathan really gave it his all. Joe‘s restrained reaction did fit to his interpretation of Albus but not really to Jonathan‘s Scorpius or the atmosphere of the scene.
His chemistry with Jamie Ballard was fine and you could feel that they mean a lot to each other although there could have been a little bit more from Joe‘s side too.
Sam didn’t show Albus as much as a leader, but his emotional scenes were always spot on. Personally I see Albus more as a hot headed emotional character that makes decisions without thinking about it properly. He is much like Harry in this regard and I missed that from Joe‘s Albus. His more calm version of Albus is totally legit and he is a great actor (and I know many people love his Albus ❤️, which is great and what is the reason why so many different versions should exist),but personally as a fan of emotional (and super angsty) Albus I wasn’t 100% sold with his interpretation. I‘m happy to have seen his Albus, but it doesn’t perfectly match with the Albus I imagined while reading the script.
Scorpius Malfoy - Jonathan Case
Tumblr media
Oh boy...where do I start with Jonathan. His Scorpius is absolute perfection. He is such an amazing actor and this is exactly how I imagined Scorpius to be like. As much as I love Anthony’s Scorpius he was never 100% how I imagined him while reading the script (which is not a bad thing!), but Jonathan is just perfect. He was the most adorable thing I have ever seen on a stage. Where can I sign up to adopt his Scorpius??? (Sorry Draco 😉).
Jonathan played Scorpius a lot more shy and unsure with a lot of anxiety. Anthony was louder and more sure of himself. Jonathan on the other hand is a complete mess and as socially awkward as I am (he is very relatable). He wasn’t as funny as Anthony, but still hilarious. His Scorpius is just so adorable and lovable and I really can’t understand how anyone in Hogwarts can bully him.
His emotional scenes were spot on. The library scene was amazing as was the office scene with Draco in the dark AU. He was one of the strongest actors in the play and he made every scene he was in was in 100% better.
His chemistry with Joe was good although as I said above I missed a little bit from Joe‘s side. The Scorbus hug at the end was everything though. My Scorbus heart was more than delighted 😁.
With him and Anthony they casted two extremely talented actors and there is a reason Scorpius was the audience favourite in both shows I saw. As actors they are both equally talented, but I think Jonathan was more my personal Scorpius, which is absolutely subjective. I love both of them so much, please don’t make me choose. So happy Jonathan will also be in the year 4 cast.
Hermione Granger - Franc Ashman
Tumblr media
I have no doubt Franc is a great actress, but to be honest she was one of the weakest points about the year 3 cast. She just wasn’t Hermione to me. It was something about her voice and here lack of authority. Noma had an absolute authority on stage, her being minister for magic was totally believable. Franc tried to play her more playful, which I appreciated as a new interpretation. She tried something very different and I appreciate her for that. This new Hermione just really didn’t work for me personally, which again is super subjective and not a bad thing about her Hermione. She is someone else’s Hermione, just not mine.
Act one was really not my thing, but the first AU in act two was worse for me. I think Franc went for Hermione slowly losing her mind about being so frustrated over Ron, but she took it a bit too far for my taste. I prefer Noma‘s more subtle interpretation. Sure Hermione is bitter in the AU, but I don’t see her that extreme. Of course this is also a subjective matter, but it really didn’t work for me at all.
Franc got a lot better in act 3 and 4 though. I really liked the remarry scene with Ron, it was a very sweet moment and she gained more authority on stage towards the end. She still wasn’t my favorite Hermione, but her performance was more enjoyable especially in the last act.
I think she is a good actress and there is nothing obviously wrong with her performance, just sometimes actors don’t agree with how you see a character and for some reason her Hermione just really didn’t work for me. I do appreciate her different take on Hermione though and I know that some people really love her Hermione and found their Hermione in her.
Ron Weasley - Thomas Aldridge
Tumblr media
I simply loved Thomas. I didn’t think anyone could be funnier than Paul, but Thomas actually managed to pull it off. The office blocking scene was just simply hilarious and the whole theatre was in tears afterwards from so much laughing. I think Paul did the serious moments a little bit better, but honestly they are both just amazing and both do their own thing. I couldn’t even tell who I prefer. They are both just perfect and so lovable as Ron.
Thomas did the AU very well and seeing him that unhappy was sort of heart breaking. I missed a little bit of chemistry between him and Franc as Paul and Noma had such great chemistry together, but this could also be very subjective as I wasn’t the biggest fan of Franc and I may be a little bit biased here. The remarriage scene was very sweet though. With Thomas going on one knee to propose again. And I liked their kiss before the Dementors suck out their soul.
In conclusion I just love Thomas as Ron, he was amazing and I‘m very happy to have seen him live. It’s great he is staying for another year.
Draco Malfoy - James Howard
Tumblr media
At first I wasn’t too sure of how I would like James as Draco as he is very Lucius Malfoy like, but I actually really loved it. He is very different from Alex as he was very rough and made his own thing very different from the book Malfoys (which was one of the reasons I loved him so much), but James‘ more book Malfoy interpretation worked as well and was even closer to canon. He looked very elegant and definetly more like a Malfoy and at the beginning he seemed very arrogant like it’s Malfoy fashion. He was less of a brat (Alex was a very nasty brat at the beginning), but more arrogant and above other people similar to Lucius. It worked really great with how the Malfoy family appears in the books.
As the play progresses we see that this behavior is rather a facade and see the real Draco. And James nailed this. His scenes where he talks about Astoria were absolutely heart breaking and I don’t see how any Draco hater can get out of this play and not think that Draco was redeemed. He was softer than Alex and I really liked that. He wasn’t as funny, but the fight between Draco and Harry was still very enjoyable and funny.
I think James had great chemistry with Jonathan and Jamie and it all worked really great together. The hug between James and Jonathan at the end was just so adorable. You could feel how much Draco and Scorpius mean to each other. I actually ended up shipping Drarry a lot after the show although I‘m usually not that big of a Drarry fan. But James‘ and Jamie‘s chemistry was really good especially in the scene in Harry‘s office in act 4. You could feel how these two dads were bonding over their love for their kids.
James is a great Draco and there is a reason he is around since the original cast in 2016 (where he was Alex‘ understudy). He made Draco his own and I‘m happy they made him main cast and that he will stay for another year. Sign me up at the James Fanclub 😂
Ginny Potter - Susie Trayling
Tumblr media
To be totally honest I didn’t enjoy Susie‘s Ginny too much. She wasn’t bad and she is a solid actress, but she sadly didn’t do much with her role. I was never a big Ginny stan especially after the movies (I know I missed out on a great character),but Poppy made me fall in love with book Ginny. Her Ginny was fierce and full of fire, but also a soft and understanding mother and wife. She was Harry‘s rock to feel safe. Susie was very soft and she got the motherly part down quite well, but her Ginny was just too motherly and not enough fierce and interesting. She reminded me more of movie Ginny than book Ginny (which again I think some people could really love if they didn’t like Poppy as Ginny). The fire and the fierceness were missing at least in my opinion (which again is very subjective). She did have great moments and book Ginny did shine through now and then, but not often enough to really get me interested in Ginny as a character.
The chemistry between her and Jamie was alright, but because of her lack of emotion it never got more than that.
I think Jamie was really trying in the church scene and it’s my favorite Hinny moment in the play, but she just didn’t give him enough back to make the scene really great. From the backstage videos I saw they can have great chemistry off stage (at least it seemed to me like that) so I think it’s rather a problem with her interpretation of Ginny and her choice to play her so calm. The good thing that did work though was the comparison Harry made between Albus and Ginny at the end. Susie‘s Ginny and Joe’s Albus were quite similar in how calm and collected they behaved. This comparison worked very well in this version of the play. Maybe she just had a bad day or I just can’t warm up to her interpretation. Don’t get me wrong she wasn’t bad, her acting was solid and good, she just didn’t do more than that. Again subjective (please don’t hate me 🙏🏻).
Rose Granger-Weasley - Helen Aluko
Tumblr media
Rose doesn’t have such a big role in the play, but Helen is really good as Rose. Her Rose is more adorable and less bossy. I could see her very well as a young version of Hermione in something. She made Rose bossy but although sympathetic at the same time. She had good chemistry with everyone.
I really liked her, she is a good actress and I‘m happy I saw her.
Severus Snape - David Annen
Tumblr media
Snape doesn’t have a big role, but as he is my favorite character from the books the Snape scenes are really important to me. I adore David‘s Snape. He is everything I ever wanted from a book Snape adaptation. He is super sassy and mean, but still funny and serious. The patronus scene was beautiful and he nailed how I would imagine an older version of book Snape to be like. I liked him more than Paul, he did more his own thing whereas Paul tried to copy Alan Rickman a bit more.
David was also really great as Vernon Dursley (the scene was hilarious) and he was terrifying as Voldemort/ Harry as Voldemort. He had to play these very different characters and he nailed all of them.
David is my favorite adapted version of Snape and I‘m very grateful I could see him live in this role. As a big Snape fan this meant a lot.
Eva - Delphi Diggory
Tumblr media
At the beginning I really liked her Delphi. She was especially lovely at the beginning making the reveal much more drastic. She had good chemistry with Joe and I actually really liked her „good“ version of Delphi, it’s a pitty it all was just pretense and this version actually doesn’t exist.
Her evil version of Delphi was a bit too much for me though. She had some great moments where she was threatening, but in a lot of scenes she went for Delphi totally losing her mind. I think she tried to make Delphi a bit like Bellatrix being totally mental. I prefer Delphi to be more serious as it’s more threatening and easier to take serious.
She did a great job though and she made it very believable for Albus to fall for her as her Delphi was very lovable at the beginning.
The supporting cast
The entire cast was pretty good. I really preferred Umbrigde and Bane this time and Hagrid and McGonagall (who was an understudy) were great too. No complains here. I would go more into detail, but this review is already longer than anticipated, so I just leave it as that.
Conclusion
I had a wonderful time seeing this play again and I was once again reminded why it’s my favorite play. It’s such a beautiful story and production and I can’t put into words how grateful I am I could see this play again. I think I can see this play a thousand times and it never gets boring. The worst thing is after seeing it it just leaves you wanting to see it again.
If you have a chance I can’t recommend this play enough. I know it’s very expensive and doesn’t play in a lot of countries, but if you can go: DO IT!!! It’s worth it. If you go in London, I think the year 3 cast is really good (now year 4 cast, but a lot of great people stayed, so!) and I totally recommend watching them. Soon (there already was 🙈) there will be cast change, but Jonathan, James, Jamie, Susie and Thomas are staying for another year and the new actors looked lovely. London is a beautiful city with a lot of great theatre (seriously watch Everybody’s talking about Jamie, it’s amazing), so that’s also a plus.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child Dream Cast Board
Today some of my friends started putting together their dream casts for Cursed Child, and I couldn’t resist joining in, because this is way too much fun.
I feel like a couple of my opinions might be controversial, and that’s actually why I wanted to post this. Everyone in both casts is amazing, and it’s so interesting to find out everyone’s favourites and why! Especially when those favourites are a bit out of the ordinary.
My rules were that I could pick any mix of people from either cast, but no one could play more than one role, however I could pick someone as a cover for a different role (actors listed in brackets are my covers). I also tried to match up people who I thought would work best together, but in at least one case I had to sacrifice chemistry in favour of who I most wanted to play a role.
So without further ado, in order of appearance, here we go!

Sorting Hat & Hagrid – Ged Simmons (Chris Jarman)
When Ged plays the Sorting Hat he’s an ethereal being. I love his detachment from everything going on around him. He isn’t part of the scene, because he’s a hat! He’s not an emotional creature, he’s just there to do a job. I also think the way he does the Godric’s Hollow transition with the pumpkins is pure magic. He spreads the snow with this joyous, back and forth motion, and it soars with beauty and enchantment.
I also think his Hagrid is simply wonderful. He broke me last Sunday when he started to leave Lily and James’s ruined house in despair, but on the way out he heard baby Harry crying and the look of hope and wonder on his face was the most incredible thing. Here is a child, who has survived the most powerful curse in the world, and is here against all odds: the boy who lived.
Chris is my cover because he was the first Sorting Hat I saw. I fell in love with his steady, measured movement. It had such a beautiful quality to it, and I don’t think anyone else has ever matched that.
*
Harry Potter – Jamie Parker (Jamie Glover)
Is there any choice for Harry other than Jamie Parker? He lived and breathed Harry. He walked on stage and it was like Harry had walked out of my imagination and onto the stage. The fire in him, and the light, boyish, fun-loving side melded together to create sheer perfection.
Jamie Glover is my second choice because I adore his reading of the script with my whole heart. He takes Harry on such a complete journey, and he made me understand Harry in a way I never had before. You can see how he learns through the story, and the moment in the dorm scene when he understands for the first time what he’s done to his son is heartbreaking, which makes the ultimate reunion all the sweeter. He’s come so far in the last few months and he has so much more still to give, so that’s why he’s my cover Harry.
*
Albus Severus Potter – Theo Ancient (Tom Mackley)
I think Theo is the perfect Albus. I’d been writing Albus for a year before he stepped on stage, and I still get astounded when he does something that matches my concept of Albus so perfectly. The best example of this is in the torture scene, when he walks up to Delphi and presents himself as a target to her when he says “Do your worst”.
He’s an exceptional actor, who is constantly in the moment. On stage he becomes Albus completely, and there’s nothing of Theo left in him. Also, I have a huge desire to see him and Jamie Parker do a blanket scene together – it would either be the most explosive thing ever or it would reduce Theo’s Albus to a puddle of tears. Either way, I’m here for it.
It was tough to choose a cover, but after some deliberation I have gone with Mackley for the unique qualities he brings to Albus. I love his stillness and nobility. I love his humour as well as his serious side, and I’ve adored him with both casts. I think Samuel brings out the best in him, and it’s wonderful to see two people have so much fun on stage together. My Mackley highlight is probably when Samuel made him jump so hard with “Ever since being in the scariest place imaginable” that he fell off the bed in the dorm scene.
I also think it needs to be said that the way his Albus reacts to Craig’s death is stunning – it colours everything that comes after it in the show for him, not just the torture scene, but everything all the way through to the very final scene.
*
Ginny Potter – Poppy Miller (Emma Lowndes)
Poppy is the only choice for Ginny. She brought together the perfect softness and toughness, and she lived Ginny on stage. She’s another who seemed to have walked off the pages of the book and onto the stage. Also, I can’t pair another Ginny with Jamie P’s Harry. It just wouldn’t be right. They are everything Hinny should be together.
Emma is my cover Ginny for a couple of reasons. Firstly, I haven’t seen Lowri enough times to choose her in good faith. Secondly, I think that Emma does some absolutely beautiful things with Ginny. I love her focus on Albus throughout the play – she prioritises him over Harry at so many points, and that motherly ferocity is a beautiful thing. For that relationship between Ginny and Albus, she has to be my cover.
*
James Potter Jr/Sr & Cedric Diggory – Tom Milligan (Jordan Paris)
Milligan captured the spirit of James in a beautiful way, so I have to pick him. Hilarious as younger James, grown-up and noble as older James, and his “see you at Christmas, Dad!” will never be matched (although attempts have definitely been made). I also realised at the weekend how much I miss his Cedric, especially when Mackley is on as Albus. Their maze scenes were a thing to behold.
And as my cover, I’ve picked Jordan, because he’s silently become one of my favourites. I love both his Jameses, and his Cedric is wonderful. I don’t really have much explanation behind this one, aside from the fact that I enjoy his attitude on stage and the quality of his acting. He’s not overly showy, and his Cedric in particular really shines because of that.
*
Ron Weasley – Thomas Aldridge (Paul Thornley)
Tom may not physically match the perfect description of Ron, but in terms of the character he’s everything you could possibly want. From the bubbly humour, to the gentle ribbing of his family and friends, to the way he sneaks sweets to James in the opening scene, he’s just a dream. I also love the things he brings to the other timelines. In the second there’s the desperate desire to find people and places he loves and escape his miserable life, the bravery he tries to dredge up around Hermione, and his soft despair at never getting her. In the Voldemort world he’s trying to fill Harry’s role as a hero, but he’s also so much himself. And of course I can’t possibly talk about Tom without mentioning that glorious animosity with Draco. Tom is literally my dream Ron. Literally.
And I have to take Thornley as my cover. I wildly enjoyed every one of the performances he gave. He and Alex set the standard for Draco and Ron’s hatred. He was so funny, and he established some things about Ron that will be with the character forever – Scrupius, for example, and the kneeling during the reproposal. He set the bar, and he set it really high.
*
Rose Granger-Weasley – Helen Aluko (Rayxia Ojo)
Helen is such a sweet, dynamic Rose. I love how she teases Scorpius relentlessly, and her facial expressions during the opening scenes of the show are a constant delight. My favourite moment from Helen, though, the moment where she steals the show, is her reaction to the conversation in McGonagall’s office when the kids are eavesdropping. She’s heartbroken, and then she’s angry at her mum, and then she collapses back into heartbreak again. There’s so much there, and she never says a word.
I’ve chosen Rayxia as my cover Rose because I think she has a brilliant, unique take on the character. She’s such a vulnerable Rose. Even though she seems so much older (like Albus’s older and more glamorous cousin) she’s broken, and she needs him to be her friend. I love that take on it, and I’ve never seen anyone else do something like it.
*
Hermione Granger – Nicola Alexis (Rakie Ayola)
Nicola was playing Hermione for the best performance I’ve ever seen, so she will always have a special place in my heart. I think she’s the perfect middle ground between Rakie and Noma – wild and intense but not too much. She seems to have chemistry with absolutely everyone. I love her playful side, like the way she explores her hair and gives Harry a poke in the back of the head during the Polyjuice transformation. I also adore her Voldemort timeline, and her exploration of her character through developing shades of lipstick (including smearing pink lipstick all over Tom A’s face during the baby or a holiday scene) is one of my favourite memories.
Rakie is my cover Hermione because I adore how she plays the friendship between Hermione and Harry in particular. The moment when Harry walks into his office at the start of the play and we see Hermione and Harry alone together and really interacting for the first time is a beautiful chance to see how they’ve grown but also stayed the same. I also adore the way she plays the Romione moments, from her sheer despair in the second timeline when she’s alone, through to the complete, childlike joy of the reproposal.
*
Scorpius Malfoy – Samuel Blenkin (James Le Lacheur)
There is no Scorpius beyond Samuel for me. His performance is masterful; that library scene is a piece of art. Right from the start he took a role that had been so memorably established and made it completely his own. He can go from hilarious to heartbroken in a second. He cries more than I thought possible, and he’s so creative, with such beautiful, deep thoughts about the show and the character. He’s the person behind Draco handing Scorpius Delphi’s wand after the duel – a stunning display of the trust between them, and the development of their relationship – but he’s also responsible for the ‘I love Krum’ chant. He’s mischievous, confident, warm; with such brilliant dynamic and emotional range, and a love of everything he does on stage. I could go on and on, but there’s no reason not to pick him as my dream Scorpius.
James Le Lacheur is my cover Scorpius because her performance has such a special place in my heart. I saw her first ever show, and her last. I adored the way she played out the relationship between Scorpius and Albus. The impulsion in her acting was beautiful, with so much thought and intent. You could always see what Scorpius was thinking and how it was guiding his footsteps. And of course, that little Dark Mark arm rub in McGonagall’s office will forever live in my memory. I only wish we could have seen her and Theo together, because I think it would have been a thing of delight (and I’m not sure any of us would have survived).
*
Madame Hooch/Aunt Petunia/Umbridge – Lowri James (Elizabeth Hill)
Lowri has been my favourite Petunia/Umbridge for a long time. I adore the emotion of her Petunia, which is perfectly balanced, and she’s a masterful Umbridge. I think she finds the perfect placing for these characters that are so easy to overdo or take to a place that isn’t true to the books.
Elizabeth is my cover for Petunia/Umbridge for very similar reasons. She’s brilliant as Petunia, again finding just the right emotional place for her. As Umbridge she’s creepy and wonderful. Her stroking of the fur coat is just the right amount of gross, although she sometimes is a little bit too creepy for me.
*
Craig Bowker Jr – James Phoon (Jeremy Ang Jones)
It was so hard to pick between these two rays of sunshine, but in the end I had to pick James first because I’ve seen him work with Samuel and I know it’s perfect. This might have been the toughest choice though, so I’m not going to write separate explanatory paragraphs for each. They’re both glorious human beings, with the most adorable Craigs. However, I will say that I love James’s movement, and the fluffiness of his hair as he runs round the suitcases at the start of the show will never not warm my heart.
*
Polly Chapman – Leah Haile (Rayxia Ojo)
Leah is the prettiest Polly. That’s all you really need to know. I just think she’s glorious, and she’s a delight to watch. I would pick her as Polly every time just because she shines on stage.
I have better reasons for picking Rayxia as my cover. I’ve only seen her once, but the intent in her performance really impressed me, especially in the Voldemort timeline. She gives Polly this very grand air, with a sense of uncertainty and vulnerability. It’s very clear that she’s using Scorpius to establish her position in the world. She’s trying to marry into money and status, and it’s her way of making herself secure. I love that really clear take on the scene.
*
Yann Fredericks – James Le Lacheur (Henry Rundle)
Yann is one of those roles that doesn’t really feel established until whoever is playing him has covered Scorpius. He’s quite quiet, and the flair only comes out once his actor has had a chance to dig into the real meat of the play. Hence, I’ve picked the two cover Scorpiuses!
James Le Lacheur goes ahead of Rundle only really because she established the role, and I think she did have more intensity of character, however I love Rundle’s take too, and I can’t wait to see him grow into it more over the next few months.
*
Karl Jenkins/Dudley Dursley – Tom Mackley (Jack North)
Mackley has to be my choice for Karl/Dudley. He brings so much flair and humour to the roles, and his Dudley in particular is very memorable for its ridiculousness. Probably my favourite thing he does as Karl is when he stabs Scorpius in the stomach with the handle of his wand during the line “spill some proper Mudblood guts”. We all need to thank whoever gave Mackley a permanent speaking role, because I am never disappointed.
I have to pick Jack as my cover because I loved his movement so much. He brought so much quality to the track, and it was something I never failed to appreciate, and will never forget.
*
Viktor Krum – Jack North
I have to split out Krum because of my two principals neither played Krum! Jack had such perfection of movement and precision as Krum, and it’s one of the things I still miss most about the original cast.
*
Trolley Witch – Sandy McDade (Morag Cross)
I have to split up the Trolley Witch and McGonagall because I do have different preferences. For the Trolley Witch, I love Sandy’s authoritativeness, which I’ve always found carries perfectly through the scene. However, I’ll take Morag as my cover because she’s great too.
*
Professor McGonagall – Morag Cross (Sandy McDade)
Morag is my choice for McGonagall because I feel such an emotional connection to her performance. Before I saw Cursed Child I’d never really thought about McGonagall or felt too much about her, but there was one show where Morag’s scene after the lake made me cry, so she’s the reason I love McGonagall so much. The emotion she brings is simple beautiful, and I’m always excited to see her.
One of the reasons I fell in love with Cursed Child the first time I saw it was how perfect the professors felt, including McGonagall, and Sandy’s performance was a big part of that. I adore her performance, and recently I love how she’s started emphasising one of her lines differently, giving it a new meaning. When Hermione asks “What did I miss?” when she walks into the post-lake conversation, McGonagall’s reply ends with “Maybe you missed that.” It’s an emphasis that makes so much sense, but I’ve only noticed it recently, and I love it.
*
Draco Malfoy – James Howard (Ed White)
There is only one choice for Draco. James is perfect. He is Draco, in the way that Jamie Parker is Harry. He was born for the role and I can’t imagine him doing anything else. The strength and authority in his voice is what sets him apart from everyone else, as well as his interpretation of the character, especially in the scene in Draco’s office.
Recently he’s started explicitly playing Draco as being under cover in the Voldemort timeline, which I adore. He glances around before speaking to Scorpius about what he’s up to, and those tiny details are what makes his performance special. Other highlights are playing with his wedding ring when he speaks about Astoria, bracing himself on the desk facing away from Scorpius when he says he can’t lose him too, and that delightful chin grab, where he takes hold of Scorpius’s chin and examines him before declaring that there’s more Astoria in there than he thought. I could go on, but all you need to know is that it’s James, and it will always be James.
I had trouble picking my cover, but in the end I’ve gone for Ed simply because he works beautifully with Samuel (and because James L and Alex don’t work together at all), and because he did the best Draco’s office scene ever. When a Draco puts his hand on Scorpius’s heart as he says there’s more Astoria in there than he thought you just can’t say no to him. He’s my guilty pleasure Draco, everything I want but know I shouldn’t have, and I adore him for that.
*
Amos Diggory/Professor Dumbledore – Barry McCarthy (Martin Johnston)
Until Sunday I really wouldn’t have had a choice here, but I have now (finally) seen Martin, so this is actually a choice!
I’ve taken Barry first because he is the perfect Dumbledore, and because I love his Amos so much. There are so many tiny details that he’s changed in response to the new cast, and he’s a consummate professional. His Dumbledore really is part of the magic of the show that captured me when I first saw it.
I found Martin’s Dumbledore captivating, and I loved the fragility and vulnerability of it – that was the thing that most broke me when I saw him. I also love the flamboyant grace with which he dismissed the trees in the Forbidden Forest. It really was a thing of beautiful magic. So I feel no qualms in making him my cover, and who knows, when I’ve seen him more times I might end up preferring him!
*
Delphi Diggory – Annabel Baldwin (Esther Smith)
This was such a hard choice, because I love all three ladies who play Delphi with all my heart and soul. Annabel almost didn’t make it into my top two because I love her Lily too much (and I need her and Milligan to be James and Lily together), but then I came to my senses and realised it was stupid not to pick her.
Annabel has been my favourite Delphi since the first time I saw her. She is a captivating actress, who holds the theatre in the palm of her hand, especially in the torture scene. I love when she goes rogue and slaps the boys or kicks Craig (can someone get the directors to always let her get away with that? Because it’s great). She’s so sinister, and she can bring such powerful performances to the stage, especially in the scene in the church between Delphi and fake Voldemort. She’s just brilliant, and it would be a crime not to take her as Delphi every single time.
I picked Esther as my cover Delphi because I always found her performance so beautiful. She’s not the most creepy or terrifying Delphi ever, but she did some amazing things. I still remember her sobbing in the St Jerome’s scene during ‘the best show ever’, and I loved her hand choreography when she was reciting the prophecy – Annabel does a slightly different version, and I still miss Esther’s sometimes.
*
Uncle Vernon/Severus Snape/Voldemort – David Annen (David Annen)
Sorry but I refuse to pick a Snape other than David. I refuse. His performance is too special to be replaced. He has such an innate understanding of his characters, especially Snape and Voldemort, which comes from deep readings of the books. He cares so much about these characters, and it’s amazing.
He came up with his Voldemort voice by reading every description of Voldemort speaking from the books. As Snape, the messages he writes on the blackboard are messages of hope to Snape’s students who are struggling in that world. Those special details are simply irreplaceable.
*
Moaning Myrtle – April Hughes (Annabel Baldwin)
April learned her Myrtle voice listening to the films, and she’d practice it while she made dinner at home. She’s ridiculous, and that voice is perfect. I love the brilliant details she puts in the background of the Myrtle scenes (shaking her head when Albus tells Scorpius everything is going to be okay, waving her feet around by Harry’s head but never quite touching him, and very slowly lifting her leg up in the most flirtatious way when she says “I do like brave boys”). I didn’t think anyone could ever replace Annabel, but she managed it.
Annabel is of course my cover Myrtle because how could she not be? Also, she then gets to play Lily with Milligan, which is the real dream.
*
Bane – Adam McNamara (Nuno Silva)
Is this my most controversial choice? I think it might be...
I saw Adam’s Bane several times leading up to cast change, and I have abiding memories of the intensity of it. That performance made a huge impact on me. The acting was brilliant, especially the way he appealed to Harry. Those were some of the best Bane scenes I’ve watched.
And Nuno is my cover Bane because I love him just as much. Always consistently brilliant. Delivering show in, show out. I’m always mesmerised by the way he breathes in this scene for some reason. It fascinates me. And I love the strength and anger in his performance.
*
Station Master – James McGregor (Adam McNamara)
James McGregor’s Station Master is basically the cutest thing in the world. He just looks so young and adorable, and his Scottish accent makes me melt.
And obviously I can’t not pick Adam, because there is no Scottish accent like Adam’s. His Station Master was incomprehensible, just the way he should be. No one will ever match that.
*
Young Harry Potter – Harrison Noble (Jabez Cheeseman)
Harrison is an incredible little actor. He’s just perfect. My favourite scene of his is the dream at the beginning of Act Two, where he’s so intense. You can hear the fear in his breathing. He’s stunning.
Jabez is my cover because he was a close second behind Harrison before he left for me. The day we found out he was leaving was a sad day indeed, and I miss him a lot.
*
Lily Potter Jr – Ella Bright (Hope Sizer)
I want a Lily to be tiny and bubbly and full of life, and both Ella and Hope did that. Ella’s the sweetest thing, and she fits with the rest of the Potters so well. I picked Hope second because I always enjoyed her performances and looked forward to seeing her when she was on.

Harry Potter and the cursed child - the play, my opinion (+Scorbus)
(This is super long (3.5k words), but I marked the different topics in case you want to read about something specifically!)
I went to London two weeks ago and guess what: I was lucky enough to get tickets for the play!
I just wanted to share my thoughts on the play. Please note that this are my very subjective thoughts on the play and someone else who was in the same room as me could have thought something completely else about it. Also note that I am one of the very few people out there on the HP fandom who liked reading the Skript. So my opinion on the play may differ (although I highly doubt that anyone would dislike the actual play)
I LOVED IT. I loved it so much. I was shaking after part one and crying after part two. It was all too much to handle for my little heart. I hope I can somehow share my experience through sharing it here.
I want to start with some general thoughts and opinions and get more detailed later, where I want to talk more about the actors/characters and some of the relationships, ending with Scorpius and Albus‘s relationship in the play (spoiler: it was so gay). I won’t talk about the plot. Because that is obviously the same.
The theater was beautiful. The set and everything around it was so lovely. I actually had pretty good seets in the middle, looking down on the stage (I was in like the first balcony/dress circle). I could see the whole stage perfectly. I loved how they expended the set for some scenes, so it actually felt like you were in the middle of the action. You could feel the energy of the play way better that way. For example when the dementors flew through the air or at the end, when Voldemort steps from stage into the crowd and the other actors are looking at us, while reacting to Harry’s parents death.
The special effects were amazing! They were made so well and it really gave the play the magic it needed. Of course it’s different than a movie (or a book, where you see it perfectly in your head), but it didn’t matter. It worked brilliantly and made my mouth drop several times. Stuff like Draco and Harry‘s Duell looked very impressive and filled the whole room with energy and tension. I won’t be spoil how they did it, but I‘ll just say that they used light a lot and fire. Just one thing that I absolutely adored, that I need to talk about, is the effect while time-turning: when time settles lights were moved that way, that it seemed like the wall was moving like water or a wave. Like getting bigger and smaller in smooth movements. It looked so good.
The other normal props were okay. Sometimes I had hoped for more. For example the train scenes, where they just build seats with suitcases. But things like the moving stairs on the other hand looked really cool. But in general nothing special about it.
The costumes looked very good for the most part. (Exception is Ginny, more in her segment.). I don’t know why they changed the school uniform, but it looked really nice. Although you sometimes couldn’t see the house colors very well. I loved the school uniform in the Voldemort AU. It looked very elegant and reminded me of Draco in his sixth year. It also suited Scorpius so well. They also changed the wands of the people we already know. I don’t know the reason for that but it isn’t like you could see them very well anyway. I really like the wands of the next gen, whose we didn’t know. They look so pretty.
The actor‘s performances were brilliant! They gave those lines so much life and made the story appear very different a lot of times. They were the people who made it a whole different experience to reading the Skript. I think this would make it way more appealing to the people who didn’t like the Skript, because I think some lines work very differently played out by actors in comparison to reading them.
Now I will go into more detail about actors, relationships etc. (Things that always matter the most to me).
Let‘s just start with Harry Potter played by Jamie Ballard. I liked it. He is an amazing actor and portrayed Harry‘s feelings very well. Especially the scene where he watched his parents die was very impressive. The way he broke down really hit me. That scream at the end was nerve wracking and you could feel all the hurt inside him coming out.
Also the very controversial line „i wish you weren’t my son“ was delivered so well. It really came out of a place of frustration. You noticed throughout the whole scene how much he is struggling with being a good father for Albus and the hurt he is feeling when Albus rejects him: it all build up to that moment, where it all was too much.
I love how Jamie brought Harry‘s trauma to life. You could really see how Harry wasn’t able to get closure with his past.
Next is Hermione, played by Nicola Alexis. She was brilliant! It was 100% Hermione and she did a perfect job. All her mannerisms were on point and it really felt like Hermione. I loved how she interacted with Harry, in a kind of motherly way, but still as a friend. Especially when they were joking around. She had a really nice energy about her and can’t say enough how great she was (and I really don’t get how people were mad that she’s black. It didn’t matter at all and didn’t make her any less of a perfect Hermione.)
And the last one of the golden trio: Ron, played by Thomas Aldridge. He was a comedy figure throughout the whole play to lighten it up a bit. Thomas did a good job though. He was very funny and portrayed Ron’s strange humor and mannerisms really well. It still didn’t feel like Ron to me. I can’t really explain why, but I couldn’t quite see him as Ron. But his performance was still great.
My queen Ginny, played by Susie Traylling. She was a really cool mum. She was cool and badass just like she’s supposed to be. The only issue I had was her outfit: it was so ugly. She wore a horrendous long skirt and a weird wooly sweater. It just wasn’t Ginny at all.
Also sometimes she was softer, especially to Harry, and that never really felt right. Somehow there missed that sarcastic tone or something that alsways comes with her, but she was just this super caring and kind person in those scenes. She should have needed a bit more self esteem in those. But in general Susie did a good job (and it way better than movie Ginny, although that isn’t very hard).
And Harry and Ginny’s relationship kind of works. I liked there chemistry and how Ginny is kind of the boss of the family (because of course she is).
Rose, played by Helen Aluko. She gave Rose a very different touch to what I expected her to be. She’s energetic, has a shit load of self esteem and has quite some attitude but that becomes quite nice to the end of the play. At the start she’s just as irritating as I imagined her to be but by the end in her fourth year, she becomes kind of sarcastic and likes to joke around in here very own way, playing a lot with her attitude. I really liked her by the end, which I couldn’t in the Skript. Helen makes Rose appear so different to what I imagined her to be like are at the end, but I love it.
Young Harry by Tommy Bard was adorable. A brilliant performance for such an young actor. He really felt like Harry to me and he did an excellent job.
My boy Draco, played by James Howard. He was so sassy and I loved it. I was sceptical at first, because he seemed kind of arrogant, but you soon notice that it is a mask to protect himself and his son. After a while you could see the fear and emotions inside him. I liked how he gave Draco that three dimensional touch that he really needs. The only thing that irritated me a bit was his deep voice, I felt like didn’t suit Draco, but James’s performance absolutely made up for that.
Delphi played by Eve Ponsonby. She looked so good (I was kind of irritated at the beginning and than I realized how good Tom Riddle looked and it made sense). I loved her clothing style with ripped pants and a black jeans jacket. Also her colored light blonde hair with blue tips looked so cool. It just was very weird when she suddenly wore that jacket out of black feathers after her reveal. It made her flying around a bit too dramatic.
It came to a surprise to me that I really liked Delphi. She was someone I would like to spend time with myself (without the whole daughter of Voldemort thingy). She really felt like a energetic, self-confident young women, who’s very passionate. Also her revealed selve was very cool! Eve’s performance was brilliant. She was very evil but you could still sympathize with her at the same time. You saw how much she loved her father and how badly she wanted to see her dad. Not just as a partner in crime, but also as an orphan, who misses her father.
She’s also kind of the biggest Scorbus shipper (she absolutely knew that at least Scorpius has a huge crush on Albus) and the biggest cock block of all time (more about that later in the Scorbus segment).
I also loved how they hinted on Delphi being bad. In the way she talkes sometimes I could sense there was something shady going on. Or another example would be at the beginning in Harry’s house with Amos Diggory. You can see her carefully grabbing her wand when she sees Harry, but than deciding against it and leaving her wand in her pocket.
Hagrid was the only Performance I didn’t like at all. His costume was great, but everything else wasn’t Hagrid. He was too naive and wasn’t kind or empathetic (at least it didn’t feel like it).
Snape wasn’t very good either. He looked like Snape and killed Alan Rickman’s way of talking but his personality wasn’t right. He was purely a fanfic Snape and that isn’t how Snape really is: He’s an asshole and that doesn’t change in an AU. But instead he wasn’t mean at all. Instead more reserved.
Professor McGonagall played by Sandy McDade was brilliant. It was perfect. 100% McGonagall. She was sarcastic, sassy and so done throughout the play. She didn’t want anything to do with Harry’s shit. I loved how different her dynamic was towards her former students and her students now. And it was hilarious how she still had authority over the golden trio (+Draco) although two of them have super high positions in the Ministry (Hermione his the fucking minister of magic and still she’s intimidated by McGonagall. Genius)
Moaning Myrtle played by April Hughes. She was brilliant. My absolute favorite performance. It was absolutely perfect. Nicely uncomfortable but still funny. And the way she moved: so perfect! Aaand she changed her lines: Harry is canonly bi!
Let me explain: Myrtle is talking to Albus and Scorpius. While she talks it is obvious she sees their dads in them. She says so explicitly. They start talking about Cedric. She says it was such a shame that the pretty one had to die. She listened to so many people crushing on him. So many Girls and some boys. While she says that she looks more into Scorpius’s direction, but when she says “and boys” she turns to Albus, definitely thinking about Harry, and telling Albus (and us) that way, that Harry used to have a crush on Cedric. I was so happy about it.
Now finally the protagonists!
Albus Potter was played by Joe Idris-Roberts. I liked it a lot. Joe gave Albus so much personality I had a hard time finding in the Skript. He made him three dimensional and he really felt like a teen who is going through a lot.
My cinnamon roll Scorpius Malfoy played by Jonathan Case. Damn he looked good (the blonde hair suits him so well. He looked so handsome and adorable). It was perfect. Quirky, nerdy, socially awkward, enthusiastic, insecure, funny. Absolutely brilliant. I didn’t think I could love Scorpius more, but Jonathan did it. His mannerisms were brilliant and really portrayed his quirkiness. The way he presented the lines were creative, fitted perfectly and made them even greater as they were. Also so many layers to his presentation. There was never a scene were he was one dimensional and there always was something more going on with Scorpius. I loved just watching him and interpreting his performance and what Jonathan tried to show subtextually.
Now relationships! I touched some already but I wanted to talk about them a bit more.
I’ll start with Harry and Albus’s relationship. I touched this a bit in Harry’s segment already. They truely felt like father and son who have a very troubled relationship. You can see how they love eachother but they struggle to understand eachother. Especially with Albus being in the middle of puberty where you already have enough trouble understanding yourself. Until Godrics Hollow there is so much tension. When Harry decides that he must just be an authority to Albus and separates him from Scorpius really broke my heart and you could see how Harry didn’t know better and was frustrated. There was so much to it and so many unspoken words were between them. It worked brilliantly and they portrayed their relationship great.
I adored the shift in Scorpius and Draco’s relationship. You always saw how much they cared for eachother. But they didn’t know how to approach eachother. In Godrics Hollow everything turns and they have a adorable father-son relationship. You could see them in the background talking, both smiling at eachother. It warmed my heart.
Delphi’s relationship with Albus and Scorpius before here reveal was also very interesting. She actually was very nice to them, although she could get a bit too enthusiastic. Delphi saw that Albus and Scorpius need eachother to be stronger and therefore actually is a good friend to them and brings them back together. It’s also really clever how she separates them at the same time. While Scorpius and Albus are still together, she slowly loosens their relationship by making Scorpius very jealous. You could see how Scorpius dislikes her more and more the more the relationship between her and Albus grows. She’s excellent with people and therefore exactly knows how to play with those two so they do what she wants. Yes she looses at the end, but that’s because she didn’t manage to loosen Scorpius and Albus’s relationship after all.
So before I can get more into detail on what she did with the two I need to get started mit Scorbus!
Scorpius and Albus need and adore eachother. Their friendship helps them to get through some tough emotional stuff. But throughout the play I got the feeling that there was more. They both feel more than friendship for eachother and they truely love eachother. They don’t know that from the other and they try to hide it, but I saw something there.
It starts with the touchiness. There are loads of casual touches. More than I ever see with any of my friends. They need to be close to eachother.
And then there are Scorpius’s looks. Gosh that boy can look at Albus, it’s incredible. Almost all the time, when Albus isn’t looking at him, Scorpius looks at him with love and desire. The scene where it is the most obvious was when Delphi was Training Albus and Scorpius was getting closer to them to watched what going on. There was so much jealousy and hurt in his eyes. He was not only afraid he would loose his friend and be replaced, but also that Albus would have a crush on Delphi. Delphi sensed that of course and used this.
Another example is right before Delphi’s reveal. Scorpius and Albus sit very close next to eachother on the stairs at the owlery, talking what to do with the time-turner. Not only they sit very close and there’s lot’s of casual touching, they both make eyes at eachother. It seems like Scorpius isn’t even trying to hide what he is feeling, smiling so openly, warmly and loving at Albus. Albus is doing a better job at hiding it, but there also is some pain in his eyes, as if he is looking at Scorpius as if he will never be able to have him that way.
Then comes Delphi into the same scene. She goes and sit right between the two and separates them that way. You can see how Albus is looking apologetic into Scorpius’s direction, who is looking hurt and jealous. That look really made me sad. Delphi than changes from being the biggest cock block ever to being a shipper and ties Scorpius and Albus together on their hands, so they basically sit on top of eachother.
And finally the last scene Albus and Scorpius have together. In the Skript this scene made me very angry, because suddenly Scorpius needed to be straight again and have a crush on Rose, but the live performance changes it completely and is almost proof that there is more going on. The actors definitely didn’t care about Scorose and went full on Scorbus.
The scene takes place an a staircase. They stand in front of eachother, while Scorpius stands two stairs further down. Because of the hight difference it first seems like they don’t stand that close, but actually they stand pretty close to eachother. They talk about how they can’t believe Scorpius has asked Rose out. Scorpius genuinely didn’t look like he could believe it. As if he didn’t want to but now he was crazy enough to actually do it. Albus looks kind of sad when he says it. A little disappointed.
Scorpius starts rambling on how Rose and him will have a beautiful future together, but although his words should be hopeful, they came across as an act. As if his heart wasn’t at it. They both try not to look at eachother, because they have a sad look in their eyes. As if they were both hiding their true feelings.
Than Rose shows up. She greets Scorpius with Scorpius King with a sarcastic tone to it. She runs away laughing after that. In the Skript it sounded she actually liked Scorpius, but in the play she was just making fun of him. When Rose is pretending like she likes Scorpius for this few seconds, Scorpius looks shocked. I could practically see “oh no what have I done” going through his head. Albus also looked shocked. He never wished that Scorpius’s crush would be returned.
When they realize it was just a joke, they loosen up. And Scorpius hugs Albus. By far the most passionate hug of all. Especially because Scorpius is standing a little lower makes the hug even more adorable. Than Albus says he thought they agreed they didn’t hug. That made me thinking, why they would discuss that in the first hand. My idea is, that they are both scared that their crush would come out and they can hide it better, when they aren’t intimate that way. And then Scorpius says, that he thought they would do this in this new version he had in mind. This confuses me until the day of today, because this is an actual line in the Skript were Scorbus apparently isn’t a thing. But the only thing “a new version of us” could mean is in a romantic way. Everyone I spoke with agreed with me and were just as confused as me. I just believe that Scorbus is canon and that these two oblivious boys have huge crushes on eachother. That’s at least what the play told me.
I hope I could kind of share my experience and this didn’t end up being way too long for anyone to read. I can just say that I loved the play and I can absolutely recommend it to everyone. It was worth every pound.
