Asks (Favorite Things)

Nearest thing to me that is also my favorite would be the book Invisible Cities by Italo Calvino. It's the book that got me back into reading after a long dry spell.

OH! Signs from M. Night Shyamalan. I've probably seen it at LEAST 50 times. One of those "everything has its place" kinda movies. After that, maybe Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb, and Dog Day Afternoon. They're all kinda stationary movies, I guess (other than Truman). I love love love movies! I have way more movies that I'll watch if I get the opportunity but I could go on and on. ok i'm gonna go on and on. couple more. Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Jaws. The Truman Show.

Favorite soup is a toughie, uhhhh, ooo, maybe ramen, or tomato if I got a grilled cheese. I'll take just about any soup, I'm a broth bitch.

I haven't gotten to play many classes yet (only Warlock, Bard, and Barbarian), but I'm going to guess it's always going to be Warlock purely due to the flavor. I love a sold soul, I love to explore conditional love and loyalty. I'd like to try a GOO Warlock sometime! I haven't gotten to play Paladin yet, but I think I may dig that too purely for flavor reasons. Generally, I'm gonna like something with magic and a promise involved haha

I work almost exclusively digital, so I guess digital is my favorite (program: Clip Studio Paint). Though I've been getting into acrylic paint, sorta, at least to make fake anime cels. My least favorite is probably oils. I'm just not patient enough.

The Turtles, Stevie Wonder, Townes Van Zandt (i really like outlaw country music and specifically Townes), The Coasters, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Fall Out Boy, Panic! at the Disco, Otis Redding, so so many musicals i love musicals, spaghetti western soundtracks, Childish Gambino, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, The Beatles (my mom is obsessed with The Beatles so I inherited it I guess), The Jones Sisters, Kid Cudi, and again a LOT of musicals.

honestly a lot of it is "does this remind me of one of my characters/stories?" and if the answer is yes i become obsessed with it

Fun facts for those of you that follow my peachy chronicles (not that I update abt my life recently but lmao): But I went from being upset i wasn't being treated well/right by people to now putting down my foot and stating my needs/wants clearly without room to misunderstand me.

And I think that's super important progress! The problem is is that now I'm seeing p clearly how and where people treat me and it's not very fun! I'm v good at compromises and am super patient! And I'm realizing people take that hella for granted and it's like. Dude.

Gentle reminder that very little fandom labor is automated, because I think people forget that a lot.

That blog with a tagging system you love? A person curates those tags by hand.

That rec blog with a great organization scheme and pretty graphics? Someone designed and implemented that organization scheme and made those graphics.

That network that posts a cool variety of stuff? People track down all that variety and queue it by hand, and other people made all the individual pieces.

That post with umpteen links to helpful resources, and information about them? Someone gathered those links, researched the sources, wrote up the information about them.

That graphic about fandom statistics? Someone compiled those statistics, analyzed them, organized them, figured out a useful way to convey the information to others, and made the post.

That event that you think looks neat? Someone wrote the rules, created the blogs and Discords, designed the graphics, did their best to promo the event so it'd succeed.

None of this was done automatically. None of it just appears whole out of the internet ether.

I think everyone realizes that fic writing and fanart creation are work, and at least some folks have got it through their heads that gif creation and graphics and moodboards take effort, and meta is usually respected for the effort that goes into it, at least as far as I've seen, but I feel like a lot of people don't really get how much labor goes into curation, too.

If people are creating resources, curating content, organizing the creations of others, gathering information, and doing other fandom activities that aren't necessarily the direct action of creation, they're doing a lot of fandom labor, and it's often largely unrecognized.

Celebrate fan work!

To folks doing this kind of labor: I see you, and I thank you. You are the backbones of our fandoms and I love you.

hey got some important news. the affordable connectivity program that helps poor and disabled people afford internet is going to run out of funding by april 2024 if we can't convince congress to renew it

i know emailing and calling politicians often seems like a waste of time, but this is gonna hurt alot of people (myself included) if this program is allowed to disappear. we really need to raise some awareness and get this program the funding that it needs. ACP is a game changer for literally millions of people. this is the only way many homes can even get internet, and in this day and age internet access is pretty much a necessity for almost everything. its gonna be a huge blow to have this vital program taken away from those who depend on it.

god I'm so fucking furious at the removal of Te Reo Māori names from organisations around Aotearoa. it's a complete non-issue, every organisation has the English name directly underneath the Māori name. I have never once as an English speaker been unable to understand what an organisation is for. Winston Peters, the Deputy Prime Minister, who is literally Māori himself, said “Te Papa is a historic name but tell me this waka kotahi, how many boats have you seen going down the road?”. Waka does not just mean canoe. it means vessel, and waka kotahi (the transport agency of Aotearoa) explains this VERY SIMPLY on their official website. waka kotahi means to travel together as one. Can you see how fucking upsetting this is. A Māori person in power who is in agreement about banning his own language, being so cocky about something that he does not even understand due to the suppression of the language of his people. It makes me sick. I've seen reports from Māori people all over Aotearoa speaking out about how upset and furious they are, how decades of progress have been undone in the fight to restore the rights of their people who have for so long been oppressed and have suffered the effects of colonisation. Please share this if you can, I hate knowing how few people will hear about this, I know there is so much injustice in the world right now and it is so exhausting, I know. I love you all, keep it up.
