Probably been asked this before but in your little AU where Senshi found her first is Izutsumi mute or is she just very quiet?
Also love your little Au it warms my itty bitty heart
She's not mute- I'm just really terrible when it comes to dialogues :'). I think she is already capable to speak more or less, but occasionally she rather expresses her thoughts through expressions, meows or her tail (like cats). I like to imagine senshi shows how to communicate more through words, to allow her human half to show more as well.

Laios enjoys napping with you under the shade of a tree.  In this moment, there’s nothing stopping you and him from understanding one another completely.  With a gentle breeze flowing, Laios finds his hands resting on your back as you turn to collapse on top of him, earning a small wheeze from him.  But he laughs, and he holds you.  It's time for rest.  Forget your responsibilities for a while.
Marcille will come to you every time she finishes a book in a daze.  She recalls the ending to you, as she usually does when she has finished a few chapters for the past few days.  However, in her post-book stupor, she finds herself more prone to rambling and such.  Still, she isn’t anxious about ‘talking too much’ or otherwise.  The way you engage with her and help ground her, especially if an ending is particularly stressful, is her favourite routine.  She shan’t trade it for anything.
Chilchuck gets busy on workdays.  With his shop and representing his fellow half-foots, his hands can get very full, very quickly.  This is why he’s thankful for your presence, welcoming him home with open arms, a tasty meal, and a hot bath prepared just for him.  You get to watch as the furrow in his brow relaxes in the midst of you.  When all is said and done, when you lay in bed together, he finds respite in this moment.  That at his age is a rare feat.  You’re really something to behold, aren’t you?
Senshi finds the time spent after a hearty meal to be some of the most tender.  Standing beside one another, Senshi plunging cutlery into suddy water only to hand it to you to dry, is like something out of a dream.  Momentarily, not only is he doing what he loves, but he’s doing it with someone he loves too.  Someone he might consider spending the rest of his days like this, washing the dishes.  He’s always sure to thank you for helping, his beard barely disguising the wide smile on his face.
Izutsumi is hardly one for staying relaxed in a perfect moment, but she still lets her guard down around you no matter how many times she tries to catch herself.  It’s a slow process.  First slouches against your arm, before turning to nuzzle into it, and then she rests her head on your shoulder and finds herself curling into you entirely.  It’s hard not to pet and scratch her, but don’t be surprised when she finally realises what she’s doing and pulls away entirely, embarrassed and acting like you’re the problem.  It’s but a moment, though a peaceful one she wouldn’t mind falling into the trap of again.
Falin sees her whole world in moments.  Little treasures to be looked back on with a tenderness and fullness unlike any other.  That’s why, with you, she holds all the time you spend together close to her heart.  From the first time your fingers brushed against one another to a late night conversation, Falin remembers each and every one, all committed to memory.  That way, when you see each other again, Falin is flooded with a feeling of bliss.  The thoughts and yearn for your smile directed at her is a moment in itself.  When you wear that glowing expression, how could she ask for more?

ougghh these past few days i cant get this thought out of my head;;;; chilchuck with a tall-man clingy reader who's just wrapped around him at all times...
whenever the party takes a quick rest from walking they instantly have their arms around him. they r very short despite being a tall-man (lost the genetic lottery 😔 def not projecting) but still conveniently tall enough to comfortably lean their chin on top of his head
`✦ ˑ ִֶ 𓂃⊹ THIS WAS SO CUTE ANON!!! i feel that so bad, it’s hard being short out here. :”)) i loved coming up with ideas for this, as i know i’d definitely be that way with him if given the chance!!!
Tumblr media
— CHILCHUCK: x clingy tall-man!reader
꒰ warnings: ꒱ gn!reader and sfw as always! super fluffy <33
꒰ wc: ꒱ 528
✦ i hope this is okay!! like always i had so much fun writing it!! enjoy!! <33
Tumblr media
✦ This first started when you found out just how warm the half-foot was. You were struggling to fight off the cold one night and had noticed how delighted Izutsumi had been when she held him. Curiosity getting the better of you, you shyly asked if you could put your bedroll closer to his. Unsurprisingly to anyone in the party, you ended up with him in your arms that night.
✦ Soon enough, snuggling up beside him at night turned to you leaning into him whenever the party took a moment to rest. This grew into more of an embrace, which finally ended in you fully wrapping yourself around him every chance you got. Chilchuck wasn’t a fan of public affection, but for some reason, that soft spot he held for you let it slide. After all, it’s not like it was completely unwelcome…
✦ You weren’t very tall for, well, a tall-man, which meant you often rested your head on top of Chilchuck’s when you could. Pulling him into your arms and wrapping them around his waist, you nuzzled into the back of his neck and perched your chin atop his head often. This caused the half-foot’s cheeks to flush violently the first time you did it, but over time he’s gotten more and more used to the action.
— “Alright, we’ll take a break here and make something to eat.” Laios announced, the party breathing a sigh of relief at the chance to take a moment of rest. You immediately sought out Chilchuck, standing in front of him with your arms extended towards him. He let out a sigh, scratching the back of his head to disguise the heat rising in his cheeks. “C’mere…” He grumbled, hiding how his heart skipped a beat at your elated expression.
You sighed at having him in your arms, resting your head on his shoulder as his back was flush against your chest. He’d never admit it, but he had started to look forward to these little moments with you…
✦ Marcille couldn’t help but squeal with delight whenever she saw you hold him close, teasing Chil about how hard he had avoided forming a relationship. This would result in him barking out excuses about how you just used him for warmth, it wasn’t like that!! (Except it was, and everyone in the party was privy to the budding relationship between you two.)
✦ Especially when you noticed when Chil was exhausted, he’d wordlessly plop his head down into your lap, curling up into your side. He could be a bit clingy himself, given the right circumstances… Pet his head and run your fingers through his hair to practically hear him purr. (And to have him completely pass out.)
✦ Chilchuck began leaving room for you beside him, or even behind him, whether it was in his bedroll or when the party was taking a moment of reprieve. It became a common occurrence that there was a perfectly you-shaped space anywhere around him. Maybe soon he’d confess how he really feels, which we all know would only bring on more of the affection. (Which he couldn’t say he’d be disappointed in.)

Re: Winged Lion fulfilling Laios' desires + "Marcille will no longer have to be alone"
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Throughout the lion's persuasion, Laios has been acting reluctant / defensive / angry / embarrassed. He tells the lion that his desires of having monsters attack a village was a foolish childhood fantasy. Concerning Falin, the lion tells him he's being a hypocrite because he's wishing for a peaceful world and they can't revive Falin without magic, then the lion says they'll move onto more cheerful topics and digs into Laios' "true" subconscious desire to become a monster (reflected in the succubus chapter).
Laios is clearly uncomfortable but the lion continues digging in. The lion mentions Laios' own desires of becoming a monster, loving monsters, desires that define Laios as a person, and almost glosses over his will to revive Falin? Because we all know he loves his sister and wants to save her. It's a noble and sympathetic act. But turning in a monster and potentially terrorizing or at least scaring people? Just because he wants to? To make up for his lack of social tact and his seeming distaste for humankind? That's not noble. So naturally Laios clings onto his goal of saving Falin (evident in the scene when the lion curses him and Laios immediately thinks of Falin), and just as naturally, the lion wants to uncover that and make him confront his "true" desire.
Laios loves his friends and his party, but I think the lion isn't granting them full livelihoods out of pure selflessness on Laios' behalf. Because his party, despite everything, accepts him. They cook with him, they journey with him to save Falin, they trust him, they support him. In the dungeon, Laios' monster knowledge is respected and valued by his friends. Right before the confrontation with the lion, Laios gives each of his party members something to do, in particular telling Izutsumi to kill him. This is probably because of her skills and the fact that he's known Izutsumi the least (and they're less close compared to, let's say, Izutsumi and Marcille). But regardless of how long he's known them, he trusts them. He feels comfortable and confident around them. He feels supported. He knows his friends will do what he told them to do. And in a world in which Laios struggles to navigate due to his social skills, his companions are very precious to him. The party is aware of Laios' shortcomings but they follow and love him anyway. Keeping them unharmed is a noble act, but also selfish, because Laios likes being accepted and cared for.
Keeping the party safe is a vague concept, but then the lion goes for the kill— Marcille's lifespan.
And you can see Laios' expression instantly changes. There's a whole panel of his face. Previously, he's been uncomfortable and defensive. Even when the lion points out his "embarrassing" and "selfish" desire to be a monster, he's not as affected as he is. Now, he's shaken. He twitches. He knows something inside him just wavered. And the lion pounces on it.
Regarding why Laios wants Marcille to not be lonely, I have some thoughts:
Sympathy
Laios is the one who saw Marcille's nightmare and knows acutely what she fears. She lost Falin and was traumatised because of it. The whole party got killed and she was also traumatised. And Laios probably thinks it's his duty as a friend, party leader, and someone who saw into her nightmare to protect her and make her happy. Falin might never come back and maybe Marcille's already lost a loved one, and Laios doesn't want that to happen again even though it inevitably will.
2. Marcille's time as a dungeon lord
Laios' argument against lord Marcille is that she can't force everyone to eat from the same menu and not everyone wants to live that long. This might be a translation issue, but the lion doesn't say it's going to extend everyone's lifespans. No, it focuses on Marcille herself and says "Marcille will no longer have to be alone". Not "everyone will live as long as Marcille" or "Marcille will live as long as everyone else". It's not about ages, it's how Marcille feels. Which is something Laios obviously cares about.
Lord Marcille was unable to fulfill her desires. What if Laios does it for her, in a kind of "two in one" demon deal? Logistically, in order for the party to keep Marcille company, they'll have to live as long as she does (note the 999 years), or as the lion says, make up a fake version of themselves to keep her company. It might not be real, and with a bit of thinking, this dream crumbles, but the lion deviously targets the emotions and it overshadows rational thought. What if it's impossible to keep Marcille company for as long as she lives? Maybe the lion will magically make it work. Just maybe. And Laios holds onto this shred of hope.
3. Solidarity of being alone
Marcille, Laios, and Falin all experienced loneliness / feeling outcasted growing up. During the nightmare sequence, Laios says Marcille is different from him because her dream takes place in a library to show how hardworking she is. But ultimately, they are people who don't like being alone. Marcille warms up to eating monsters and accepts Laios for who he is. Laios rescues Marcille from the nightmare and the lion. They are each other's comfort zones and they keep each other company.
Laios doesn't want to be alone, hence the lion offering to save his friends. And he doesn't want Marcille to be alone, because he cares for her, and she's just like him in that regard.
Mentioning Marcille's feelings is what tips Laios over the edge. He isn't embarrassed or angry, he's frozen to the ground, shaken and persuaded. Arguably, saving Marcille is also a "noble" goal in the way saving Falin is a noble goal, but I think L+M has developed so far that saving her will feel like saving him because they both just want someone to keep them company (especially with the context of having lost Falin, who keeps them company and loves them for who they are).
Before all of this, Laios trusts Marcille with his precious gourmet guide. It's his hint that he's turned into his ideal monster, but the fact that he's given the embodiment of his dreams and desires to her shows how much he trusts her and feels comfortable around her. And it's Marcille who passes the guide around their friends as they all realise the monster is Laios. Even as a monster, Laios is recognised, his friends cheer for him, they want to save him.
I don't think I've seen anyone talk about this before, but later, Marcille tries using her summoned serpent / monster to eat monster Laios. (Like how she used it to eat her friends when she was a lord.) And Marcille's monster actually swallows Laios. But then Laios claws open its stomach and breaks free. Consumption is a form of love and salvation. I liked seeing their different monsters: Marcille's being a sleek serpent with flower motifs, kind of resembling her sky fish familiar that she used to rescue Senshi and Laios' almost chaotic chimera full of bits and pieces he picked up and carefully selected (including the scylla head he picked from the succubus). Marcille tries to save Laios by using her monster to eat him. They all save Falin by eating her monster parts. Even though initially Marcille was the one most picky about eating monsters, in the end she summons her own familiars and monsters and engages in her own way of creation / consumption.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And after all of this, it's Marcille who finds human Laios first. She doesn't berate him or anything, just treats him normally, tells him everyone is waiting for him. Because they accept each other and keep each other company. That's one of their core desires. Their character arcs intertwine and in the end they live together. Neither of them will have to be alone.

someone in my dash is liveblogging the succubi chapters in dunmeshi. and. damn. i love that part so much.
i specially like how revelatory the conjured images are about the ways all of the characters think about desire.
chilchuck's is the most straightfoward one: a halfling blonde beauty. it's absolutely what i thought the chapter would be about (figuring out their "types", the traits they find attractive suddenly manifested as reality). we as an audience also have zero confirmation if this entity looks at all like his ex-wife because of course chilchuck would never confirm or deny that.
marcille's gets a little more abstract. marcille doesn't conjure someone that could be a real person trying to seduce her, but this specific fictional character that she likes (the half elven guy from her romance novels). marcille's succubus has been dissected to death but i really dig how it reinforces things we know about marcille: she loves fictionalized narratives (i mean, she's always speculating about other people's loves lives the way one would interact with a story) and expressing her desires in the relm of fantasy. that guy is also her favorite half elven hero so, as a half elven woman, this is a form of self love for her. it's cute and also hilarious because LOOK at him.
laios' is..... honestly incredible. there's so much going on there. he sees marcille, implying that he's subconsciously attracted to her. but there's a catch: of course succubi marcille is not only secretly a monster but she also claims to possess the ability to turn him into a monster. it's one of two instances where we learn of how much marcille's necromantic transgression left a mark on him (the other being the doppleganger chapter, where he envisions marcille the way she looked on the day she ressurected falin). here, he sees marcille as an actor of transformation and that's the way in which he finds her desirable. super interesting stuff. and, well, there's also his furry inclinations and his wish to become a monster himself. but that part is much more obvious.
izutsumi's succubi are my favorite ones, though. she sees a black panther (something her cat half finds attractive! lmao) and also what her human side thinks a loving mother would look like. it's so bittersweet. much like chilchuck's succubus, it's impossible to tell if this is what izutsumi's actual mother looked like or if it's just a mix of half remembered memories and her own longing.
i think this gets even sadder with the information that izutsumi is a cat with a human soul trapped in it. izutsumi wants to be human, longs for humanity, but her human body is long gone. if she were to separate her human soul from her body (like she wishes), she would just be a cat. and this is the thing that always makes me a bit emotional while revisiting this section.

ok i have sone words now
the way i blindly trusted laios even when it looked like he had lost then i thought oh he planned all of this (<- foolish assumption, no precedent for me to believe this, his plans often fail) and when things worked out i was so proud of him and everyone is like WOAH I CANT BELIEVE LAIOS PLANNED ALL THIS!! and kabru asked "omg laios did you plan all this from the start?" and laios face became a loading screen like. mf was just so into his special interest (monster) he accidentally succeeded at doing the impossible and saved the world....
the way marcille's lil gay ass was still able to be saved because saving falin was more important to her than her biggest desires and her life goal. pointing at her entire arc. just all of it i dont have words to describe my thoughts theres so many.
izutsumis lil chapter as her fumbass figures out only after everything that she stayed w the group this whole time because she actually does care about them. the way senshi is like a father to her. She ate the pie w vegetables in it so she can be healthy and live longer and see marcille. she was sad about not being able to hang out w her friends immediately after saying those arent her friends. Girl theyre ur besties. The way she got said when yaad thought he was gonna die cause she wanted to go on adventures together... shes so full of love and she doesnt even realize it....
chilchuck wanting to help the other halflings before he goes on to start his shop because making sure his people arent hungry means so much to him its ok bestie laios will never let anyone be hungry in his kingdom the halflings r safe u can go reconnect w ur family and ur grown ass daughters.
senshi just. Actually everything about senshi tbh. i dont have words to express my undying live for senshi. The man of all time. Peak performance.
Thistle. Thats the whole sentence.
Falin!!!! Falin who we get to see so little of but whos so important to the entire plot. Façin ehos full of love and compassion and curiosity and admiration for her friends and her brother even tho shes incredibly powerful on her own!! Falin who is so happy about her fuzzy feathery legs and shes so loved.
The way everyone worked together to eat all that meat. Even if they didnt like the idea at first.
MITHRUN!!!! MITHRUN REALIZING HE HAS WORTH EVEN LEFTOVER VEGETABLES HAVE WORTH MITHRUN WHO REALIZES HE CAN FIND NEW REASONS TO LIVE!!! KABRU AND THE ELVES GIVING HIM IDEAS TO HELP HIM MOVE AGAIN!!!!!!!!!
ough my heart.......
OUUGHHHH YEAH RIGHT YOU ARE HITTING ALL THE NAILS ON ALL THE HEADS YOUR BRAIN IS SOOOO HUGE ILU UUUUWAAA

2023 Media Thread - Part 105
Dungeon Meshi
Nine years. Nine years and its finally finished. I only started reading Dungeon Meshi a year and a half ago; I can't imagine the pain of having to wait for each chapter for nine years.
The artwork in this series in insane. The detailed backgrounds create such a real sense of place. Character designs are varied and expressive. And when Kui Ryoko pulls out all the stops, you get some of the most striking, beautiful, and haunting visual imagery.
The main characters are amazingly realized. They're all so likable, while remaining complex personalities with goals, emotions, and histories. Laios. Marcille. Chilchuck. Senshi. Izutsumi. I love each and every one of them.
I think where it loses me a bit is the story. As more elements and pieces of the plot are introduced and come into play, the focus starts to spread a bit thin, and not everything is of equal interest or appeal. By no means is it ever bad, but something is just a bit under cooked or some vital ingredient was missed that would make it hit harder.

if you're still doing it top 5 relationships... can be romantic platonic family etc
I'll be assuming you mean among animanga characters!
whatever is going on between matrioshka and mister 5 protagonist of the manga that bears his name. a friend of mine who's better with words described them as simultaneously acting like old friends of several decades and like a couple on a honeymoon. they're clearly fond of each other yet by nature do not express it in ways that are socially normal, both being distant and rather asocial people in the middle of serious geopolitical bloody drama; but neither care about that and are fine just chilling and trust each other with infinite amounts of personal space. the concept of a normal (ish) human person in a mutual loving relationship with someone bearing a level of intelligence and perception that is so inhumanely high that their take on life is fundamentally unrelatable for other human beings is so so good. I don't have to wish them the best they got their happy ending fucking off in the moebius desert to raise a kid
custas and dagda 😢 cus describing their relationship is what got me to love both of them so much in the first place..."he's not my dad but he's family [...] He's a really great guy, he's too nice" vs dagda seeing him as his son because he taught him what he knew, but being surprised custas sees him as family regardless. very heartfelt and bittersweet. I do like found families and this one is a good example of a very loving one that does not fit in the mold of a nuclear family fandom is so obsessed about. they're both flawed people with a rocky relationship but who genuinely love each other so they don't mind those bumps in the road...
the kazukabes from dorohedoro. what did i just say about a human being and a greater form of consciousness being in love? but this time they're both retirement age and also huge freaks. the stage of romantic love where it's been so long it's mostly just commitment and lovingly held up routine that remain is my favorite but this is dorohedoro that we're talking about so they're batshit on top of it all. when he violently dies and she pulls out his dismembered hand to hold it to say she loves him? peak romance. when he talks about how she burns people in hell with fondness that freaks out his colleagues at the coffee break? peak romance. when he's all flustered bc she opened her back to hide him in her innards? peak r- you get it
it's hard to pick a favorite relationship in dungeon meshi because they're so well written, but i really like laios and farlyn's unspoken complicity in being siblings born to parents who did not give either a happy childhood; chilchuck immediately noticing and taking into his own disgruntled hands the teenage moody callousness of izutsumi and protecting her emotionally without overstepping her boundaries because goddamn that's a man who's raised four teenage daughters and knows what to do; kabru and rin being childhood friends who both survived similar traumatic events and grew up into an introverted stuck up discreet mess and a master of emotional manipulation with unmatched shrewdness for analyzing human behavior who yet is completely blind of how in love she is of him
the unique flavor of genuine love, codependency and mutual mental health issues ping-pong between black and white. white's little speech about their relationship defined as "i'm missing some screws but i got all the screws he needs" is one of my favorite scenes especially in the film. their relationship and its duality is a major focus of the story so i could go off for pages but it's interesting how one is mentally disabled yet very emotionally intelligent vs his brother being on the stupid side and so hellbent on protecting his brother it bends back into borderline ableism. every horror happens to them that my tragedy loving self can ram into walls about INCLUDING how their love for each other and dedication to a common goal that might doom them concludes the whole story. alexa play plaid - white's dream

omg poor chilchuk...he's being held like a little grapr
Tumblr media
love to see siblings appreciating each other

THE EXPRESSIONS HE IMAGINED FOR THEM
Tumblr media
okay maybe this was in the manga but I do NOT like that marcille was only in those panties. and it doesn't make any sense either like why put on her mage cape and not PANTS?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I hate when characters do this because it reminds me of ichigo from bleach and that's just too cringe for me. but the way the rest of this scene plays out is so mature and lovely <3 unlike bleach which is crass garbage. teenagers deserved better
Tumblr media
I love this moment....chilchuk is rarely so heartfelt and emotional about anything, and he's been considering the wisdom is staying with the group even in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds
I'm going to rewatch the first part of the episode again bc those expressions are SO good
I wonder when farlyn will be back....when is the next big fight scene you know. iirc they go back up, then on their way back down run into shuro and his crew, AND kabru and HIS crew, and I know they were both at the fight bc kabru literally cuts farlyn's throat (insane panel) and izutsumi is there too.or at least, they've met her at that point
could be a few episodes! they're being very sly about dragon-farlyn's form. keeping it a surprise while giving us hints to the other characters and events and creatures - good!

GUSH ABOUT IZUTSUMI DO IT NOW THIS IS A THREAT
Tumblr media
You dont need to tell threaten me with a good time. Look, i get that i talk and reblog izutsumi here alot, like its my thing, thats my wife etc etc. but just...i dont really have proper words to describe just how much she means to me. Ive tried to find them, Looked for them in the various love story quote twitters i follow, try to pull them from the creative aspects of my mind with poetry, even try and maybe spy something from other peoples posts. But i cant find anything, i cant find genuine words that can describe how much she means to me and how much i love her. I can do my best with poetry and art, thats when it feels the closest. I understand why the poets of old would write sonnets and poems and plays for the people they love, why artists would do massive murals and carve brilliant statues of the people they love. and sorry for the incoming tangent. Because art? art is perhaps the closest man will ever come to speaking the language of the gods. Because creation is what the divine do, it is there specialty. To create is to speak the language of the divine in the best way our feeble human souls can manage, and so to create for the sake of love? Why that is man trying to speak in the language of gods, for i believe that in this language one can find the words to describe true love. Im not a religious man, far from it in fact. And my words ascribe to no particular religion, and just like my words are not bound to any specific religion, neither is creating. Humans have always created, every culture, every religion, every race, every instance of humanity has created. Because the act of creation is a universal human experience, it is something imbued into every single person. From the youngest child to the oldest soul, we are all drawn to creating things. Art, music, stories, it is part of humanity to create. For humanity, whether it realizes it or not, is always chasing a taste of divinity. And so i try again and again, using my art and my words to try and speak that tongue of the divines. Hoping to unravel its ancient and cosmic secrets, so that i may finally speak the words i have long sought and truly and genuinely express my purest adoration and love for izutsumi.

One of the neat things about The Locked Tomb is the times that a character who's hiding something lets slip what they really mean, but in a way that you don't get until you reread it. It's like a fridge joke but emotional (which is different than foreshadowing, because you don't even realize there was a shadow at the time).
My favorite example in Gideon the Ninth is when "Dulcinea" is asked why she decided to become a Lyctor, and she says "because I didn't want to die." Past tense, because she's already a Lyctor. Only the second time do you realize that Cytherea didn't want to die.
This happens in Harrow the Ninth too, which I'm only just realizing. On the shuttle to Canaan House, Ortus expresses that he's glad he'll finally have the time to finish the Noniad, which Harrow interprets as him using the time while she's studying Lyctorhood. But Ortus is already a ghost at this point: he has the rest of eternity in the River to write his poem.
It's exciting to imagine what new rugs Muir will find to pull out from under us tomorrow.

Normally it would be easy to dismiss language anachronisms in fantasy. Having to figure out what the actual language would be doesn't usually affect the story in any way and takes a lot of effort, and not everyone can be like JRRT. In Gideon the Ninth, you don't think twice about the fact that they can still read the signs in the Canaan House laboratory 10 thousand years later. Gideon speaking in Tumblr memes is just a characterization shorthand
But then in Nona the Ninth it does matter. It's a relevant plot point that some characters speak House and some characters don't, and Nona is a universal translator. From Gideon we know that House has to be at least compatible with modern English, and the people who fled Earth no longer speak that (or call it English). Whether or not the language is necromantically frozen, it's being artificially preserved somehow

Kiriona Gaia Isn’t Gideon Nav
That’s an extreme claim, I know. And we’ve clearly seen a lot in common between the two. However, the differences are stark enough that I don’t believe that it can be explained purely as off-screen character growth over the course of several months.
Let’s review what we’ve seen of Kiriona in Nona the Ninth. She’s extremely possessive of and in love with Harrow still (“Get in line, thou big slut”); she’s besties with Ianthe (friendship bracelets, secret handshake); and she’s deeply loyal to the Emperor, her father (going on secret missions that even the other Lyctor Prince doesn’t know about).
The first one makes sense. When John brought Gideon back and bound her soul to her corpse, it was still her soul, only a little worse for wear for being killed twice already. The only way John seems to be able to create new souls is the old fashioned way (which tbf is how he created Gideon the first time). However, he clearly put his own spin on the body. The titanium bones, unbreakable skin, and leaving the hole through her chest are his mark of Cain upon Kiriona.
Kiriona’s friendship with Ianthe feels like a major stretch for Gideon. We know she can be temporarily swayed with puns (“gall on gall” -> “let’s get married”), but it’s a far cry from merely cooperating with someone you don’t like to becoming best friends with them. While I can see Gideon continuing to work with Ianthe like at the end of Harrow the Ninth for a significant period time, I find it impossible to believe they could actually become friends given how diametrically opposed they are. (I don’t think Ianthe can have friends at all, but this isn’t about her.)
I think the hardest part to swallow is her loyalty to John. Gideon wasn’t loyal to the Ninth House or the Houses as a whole a day in her life; her only loyalty was to Harrow personally, and even that was self-serving. Gideon was definitely a schemer; she wasn’t book smart (although even she picked up enough skeletal knowledge on the Ninth), but she spent a lot of time making intricate plans for escape, and they got pretty good. If Gideon knew that Harrow’s body was walking around on New Rho, it’s reasonable to think that she maneuvered things to get planetside to rescue her.
But she didn’t. Kiriona was a Lyctor Prince for a good deal before the New Rho operation, and I’m not sure how much she knew about Harrow’s body’s presence when the planning for that began. Instead, it turns out the whole thing was actually John’s plan to get Alecto back to the Tomb. The same John who’s only prior interaction with Gideon was ordering the death of her girlfriend necromancer. And even without the personal slight, Gideon hates authority figures. John is Crux turned to 10,000, and Kiriona took great pleasure in finally finishing him off.
Except, she didn’t. And while her response could be read as “revenge is hollow because it doesn’t get you back what you lost,” Kiriona seems to react as though she can tell her empty response doesn’t feel legitimate. This is my central thesis: John fucked with her mind when he rebuilt Gideon. He didn’t want a loose cannon teenage daughter, he needed a new Lyctor who would actually remain loyal after everyone else had turned on him. And so he ensured that Kiriona would be a better soldier than the ones he had just lost.
The biggest piece of evidence is actually the simplest: her name is Kiriona now. One of the major revelations in Nona the Ninth is how he built the crew that would later become the Lyctors post-Resurrection. Those sixteen people who were largely his friends and colleagues before the end of the world were not quite the same people that became the Lyctors and cavaliers afterwards. When he first animated Ulysses and Titania, he gave them new names to signify that they were new people. When he killed his friends and resurrected them, he gave them new names too. Their personalities were generally the same (Alfred was still the peacekeeper; Cristabel was still a martyr; Augustine and Mercymorn were still kismesises), but they explicitly didn’t remember who they were before. The same is true of Kiriona: she still had the same general personality as Gideon, but now her ideals are John’s ideals. She was resurrected with the same loss of agency that the rest of John’s people suffered.

Top 5 Ships
tl;dr: I guess my type is ships where one of the characters is just awful at socializing but the other *gets* them and they work together to be a power couple anyway
in no particular order:
1: marcille/izutsumi (dungeon meshi)
their dynamic is one I definitely kind of relate to. like, izutsumi isn’t used to being around other people and sucks at expressing herself, but she wants so desperately to allow herself to let her guard down and pour out all her affection. as someone who’s kind of an outsider to relationships and close friendships, it’s pretty easy to project onto
and then marcille is so warm and genuine and is super patient with her
it’s just very sweet.
2: kabru/misurn (dungeon meshi)
kabru is basically the perfect partner (romantically or otherwise) for misurn, and they form a really compelling power couple when they work together. kabru’s whole thing is how he can work well with anyone and he’s great at assessing the talents and limitations of the people around him, and it shows in how easily he meshes with misurn when they get stuck together. he totally gets what misurn’s limitations are and complements them masterfully
misurn’s naturally a bit harder to get a read on, but you can tell that they have a huge amount of respect for kabru, even though they both know he’s up to something. misurn recognizes what kabru’s strengths are and is totally willing to let them take the lead when his skills are needed.
any relationship has to be a team, and these two work together incredibly effectively
also they’re both pretty attractive and misurn is totally a goal
as a side note, some parts of the fandom seem to try and downplay or eliminate misurn’s disability when shipping these two, and that just seems like it misses out on a lot of what makes them interesting! the way they work together to uplift each other is the compelling part!
3: battler/beatrice (umineko)
there’s no spoiler free way to be specific, but pretty much all of the beato ships are good
like above, I think these two make a good team when they work together in the later episodes. and like, even though battler’s usually a dumbass around other people, once he gets it, he does his best to be respectful and doesn’t like, make a big deal about beato’s history. he makes her feel valued for the person she is.
and they’re really cute when they start flirting in like episodes 3 and 4 and are just totally awful at it. like the bit where beato turns battler off by being too into the ridiculous deaths and freaks out about getting him back is great, and ditto when she’s worried about him after he got freaked out by the heel turn at the banquet
also evil witch lady hot
4: renko usami/merribel hearn (touhou)
renko’s another character I relate to a lot. she’s always super passionate about everything the two of them do together, and she’s always supportive of merry whenever she gets into weird stuff
I love their dynamic of merry constantly worrying about renko getting in over her head and renko always going above and beyond to be there when merry’s going through something
5: akira/shoko (valvrave the liberator)
nobody knows who I’m talking about, so here’s this thing I made:
dailymotion
this one has elements of a lot of the others I’ve listed so far. I think shoko comes off as really sweet and earnest, and she’s super supportive of akira without being like, smothering. and akira’s a good kid! she’s clearly been through a lot, and it’s really heartwarming to see her open up after all that and grow to trust and be comfortable around shoko
I’m kinda beating around the bush, but akira really obviously reads as probably autistic or similar, and I like that it’s kind of just a fixture of her characterization. like it would’ve been easy for the writers to fall into the trap of her turning “normal” after she befriends shoko or whatever, but they don’t. she’s still the same person, just comfortable and at ease
