⁣ Canon EOS 250D | 35mm | 1/800s | f/8 | ISO 100⁣ Taken on 22/02/2020.⁣ ⁣ The area around the coast of Calabria, near the town of Isola di Capo Rizzuto, is part of the Marine Protected Area of Capo Rizzuto–the largest of its kind in Italy.⁣ ⁣ And on a small peninsula along this coastline stands a beautiful sandcastle-like fortress that seems to have come straight out of the pages of a mystical fairytale.⁣ ⁣ Known now as the Castello Aragonese, this structure dates back to the Greek colonisation of Southern Italy, an area then called Magna Graecia. The Greeks built a fortress on the peninsula around the 5th century BC that was later used by the Romans. At one point, the fortress was a refuge for the Carthaginian general Hannibal as he and his forces retreated during the Second Punic War against Rome.⁣ ⁣ After the fall of Rome, many different kingdoms, empires and people ruled over the area such as the Norman's, Byzantines and Angevins, each using and expanding the fortress over the centuries. The castle was inhabited during the Middle Ages, but was abandoned during the 9th century following a raid by Arab forces.⁣ ⁣ In addition, the area was the site of an important battle of the War of the Sicilian Vespers in 1297. During this time, the tower was built by the Angevins who ruled the Kingdom of Naples. It was later restored by the Aragonese during the early 16th century—hence its name today.⁣ ⁣ 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲:⁣ ⁣ Le Castella can be reached by bus from Crotone. The company's called 'Autolinee Romano' and runs this service Monday to Saturday.⁣ ______________________________________⁣ ⁣ #LeCastella #Ig_Crotone #IgersCrotone #Calabria #Italia #Italy #SouthItaly #AMePiaceIlSud #NatGeoTravel #NationalGeographic #BestPlacesToGo #FindItLiveIt #Mare #Love #CalabriaDaAmare #Sea #Travel #SembraEstate #TravelBlogger #IgersCalabria #BellezzaItaliana #PhotoOfTheDay #SudItalia #VolgoCalabria #InstaGood #Wonderful_Places #BeautifulMatters #Italia_Shotz #EarthFocus #YallersCalabria (at Le Castella, Calabria, Italy) https://www.instagram.com/p/CHpdhLEFlYJ/?igshid=ws8wdyvsgedl

⁣ Canon EOS 250D | 19mm | 1/250s | f/10 | ISO 100⁣ Taken on 25/02/2020.⁣ ⁣ Charming resorts along two gorgeous coastlines, rustic mountain villages and peperoncino-heavy cuisine make the southern region of Calabria a favourite below-the-radar Italian holiday destination.⁣ ⁣ Historically underdeveloped and neglected, Calabria is now trying to lure tourists to its quiet rural towns and villages of historical heritage – Rocca Imperiale, Tropea, Morano Calabro – and entice adventurous travellers seeking another side of Italy by promoting its unique, scenic hiking trail from the Ionian Sea to the Tyrrhenian Sea.⁣ ⁣ If you haven't ventured further south than Rome, you're missing out on soaking up over a thousand years worth of history and culture in the Calabria region as it was part of Magna Graecia. And somewhat isolated hill towns like Strongoli, surrounded by unique scenery, preserve tradition, authenticity, architecture and hidden treasures as well as countless gastronomic delicacies.⁣ ⁣ 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲:⁣ ⁣ You can arrive at Strongoli by bus from Crotone, Monday to Saturday. Look up the latest timetables on the 'Autolinee Romano' website.⁣ ______________________________________⁣ ⁣ #Strongoli #IgersCrotone #Ig_Crotone #Calabria #TurisCalabria #SouthItaly #AMePiaceIlSud #Italia #Italy #BeautifulPlaces #LandscapePhotography #Jaw_Dropping_Shots #Awesome_EarthPix #OurPlanetDaily #NatGeoItalia #NatGeoTravel #Calabria_BestPhoto #CalabriaMia #VolgoCalabria #IgersCalabria #Italian_Trips #WorldTravelPics #Amazingshots_Europa #Ig_Europe #ItaliaInFoto #ItalyInspired #Divine_DolceVita #Calabria_Love #TravelGreen #TravelItaly (at Strongoli) https://www.instagram.com/p/CHL1L1ilvJg/?igshid=1ni6ok8xt9pr1

⁣ Samsung Galaxy Note 10+⁣ Taken on 24/02/2020.⁣ ⁣ Caccuri is classified as one of Calabria's – and Italy's – most beautiful villages.⁣ ⁣ The name of this secluded medieval village derives from the Greek 'Cacumen' meaning 'summit' — quite a fitting name given that Caccuri is perched on the spur of a protruding spot between the Lepre and Lese, two affluents of the River Neto.⁣ ⁣ Narrow cobbled streets, interwoven with steep climbs and descents, await you in Caccuri. But the herculean effort that it takes to make it to the historical centre at the top is really worthwhile—not only for its ancient monuments, but also for the vast views that can be enjoyed of the beautiful, bumpy landscape that is nothing short of amazing.⁣ ⁣ 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲:⁣ ⁣ Catch a bus with 'Autolinee Romano' from Crotone bus station heading for San Giovanni in Fiore or Cosenza. The nearest stop to Caccuri is at the 'bivio' (junction) at the bottom of the hill near the 'Autoto Noce' service station. It takes about 45 minutes to reach the the top of the village on foot, though it's a wonderful way to take in the views at your own pace. ⁣ ______________________________________⁣ ⁣ #Caccuri #IgersCrotone #Ig_Crotone #Calabria #SouthItaly #AMePiaceIlSud #SudItalia #TurisCalabria #Italia #Italy #Fotografia #YourShotPhotographer #ILikeItaly #Ill_Grammers #Nature #Photography #Photographer #Borghi_World #Borghi_Italiani #BorghiPiùBellidItalia #BorghidItalia #TravelPhotography #CalabriaDaScoprire #TheHub_Calabria #VivoCalabria #VisitCalabria #Ig_Italy #YallersItalia #YallersCalabria #VolgoItalia (at Caccuri) https://www.instagram.com/p/CGABDXplmw_/?igshid=sui34ato6af7

⁣ Canon EOS 250D | 35mm | 1/125s | f/16 | ISO 100⁣ Taken on 24/02/2020.⁣ ⁣ Calabria represents the quintessence of the mezzogiorno, a historically underdeveloped southern region of the Italian peninsula.⁣ ⁣ After Unification in 1861, the area was largely neglected and sank into abject poverty that was worsened by emigration. Things have improved since then, although tourism is yet to bring the riches found in other southern regions like Puglia and Campania.⁣ ⁣ For me that's all the more reason why anyone should visit Calabria: it's off the beaten track and waiting to be discovered, providing an authentic Italian experience.⁣ ⁣ The northern stretch of the Tyrrhenian coast in Calabria is peppered with holiday complexes that crowd the flat littoral. But if you're in dire need of solitude, be it inland or by the sea, head to Calabria's Ionian coast.⁣ ⁣ Although less developed than the Tyrrhenian side of the peninsula, this mainly sandy strip of the Ionian side has a host of hidden gems to be explored in the way of hilltop villages with breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside and coastline.⁣ ⁣ As the crow flies, Santa Severina is around 25km from the crystalline sea and about 30km from the port city of Crotone. Yet despite being a fair distance from the coast, I felt I had the sea at my fingertips while taking in the view from 326 metres above sea level at the top of Santa Severina's historic centre. This photo is just one of many balcony shots that this hidden gem has to offer.⁣ ⁣ Santa Severina can be reached by bus from Crotone bus station with 'Autolinee Romano'.⁣ ______________________________________⁣ ⁣ #Calabria #SudItalia #SouthItaly #LonelyPlanet #AMePiaceIlSud #Italia #Italy #IgersCalabria #Ig_Crotone #YallersCalabria #VolgoCalabria #VolgoItalia #YallersItalia #Sea #View #NatGeoItalia #LandscapePhotography #Epic_Captures #ForBesTravelGuide #CondeNastTraveller #ItalyTour #CalabriaDaAmare #CalabriaDaScoprire #SantaSeverina #Nature #OffTheBeatenPath #TravelItaly #Jaw_Dropping_Shotz #TravelingTheWorld #Calabria_Love (at Santa Severina) https://www.instagram.com/p/CFwHIgmIKEi/?igshid=4xxykff1qej3

⁣ Samsung Galaxy Note 10+⁣ Taken on 25/02/2020.⁣ ⁣ A few kilometres away from the Ionian Sea is Strongoli, a historic town perched on a hill right in the centre of the Crotone area where olive trees can be seen at a great distance as they contrast with the cloudless sky and dry vegetation.⁣ ⁣ The town we see today is intrinsically linked to its medieval past; the 16th-century bastions and stone walls that were built as a defence against invasion and enemy attack – particularly against the Saracens – testify to this.⁣ ⁣ Strongoli may not be the fortified power that it was once, but it's rich in fascinating monuments that invaders so desperately tried to conquer. One important landmark is 'la Collegiata dei Santi Pietro e Paolo' that has resembles a cathedral with its basilica plan, three naves, quadrangular pillars and dome-shaped side chapels built in the Byzantine style.⁣ ⁣ If you swipe through this photo set, you'll realise that Strongoli has no shortage of charm; it breathes history and beauty in a quiet corner of Calabria that makes it such an idyllic place to visit.⁣ ⁣ 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲:⁣ ⁣ Catch a bus from Crotone with 'Autolinee Romano', Monday to Saturday.⁣ ______________________________________⁣ ⁣ #strongoli #ig_crotone #smartphone_photography #italia #italy #treasureitaly #ancientcity #adventuremore #turiscalabria #adventuretravel #bestdestinations #italian_trips #huntgramitaly #forbestravelguide #calabriadaamare #ig_calabria #calabriadascoprire #thehub_calabria #calabria_super_pics #shotz_of_italia #calabria_illife #raw_italy #italy_illife #madeinitaly #suditalia #southitaly #lonelyplanet #natgeotravel #travelgramitalia #instaitalia (at Strongoli) https://www.instagram.com/p/CEfBfWZoTQS/?igshid=kzrwrzco8no

⁣ Canon EOS 250D | 18mm | 1/500s | f/11 | ISO 100⁣ Taken on 25/02/2020.⁣ ⁣ * Repost *⁣ ⁣ Hard to think this photo was taken towards the end of February with the serene sky and the brilliant blue sea.⁣ ⁣ It's also hard to think that this seaside resort was totally deserted; you could hear a pin drop even along the shade-stricken streets.⁣ ⁣ Walking along the quiet, empty seafront, I felt as though the beach belonged to me. No doubt this sunkissed sport is chock-a-block this summer!⁣ ⁣ I took this photo from the Aragonese tower that's a short uphill walk from the seafront. The tower can be dated back to the 16th century and has a circular structure constructed on three levels, boasting breathtaking views like this one.⁣ ⁣ 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲:⁣ ⁣ Torre Melissa can be reached via train on the Sibari–Catanzaro rail line.⁣ ⁣ Astonishingly, I found the train was made up of one carriage. How on earth does this resort cope with heaving holidaymakers during the Easter and summer breaks? ⁣ ______________________________________⁣ ⁣ #torremelissa #ig_crotone #calabriadaamare #southitaly #suditalia #click_vision #italia #italy #ilikeitaly #illgrammers #sunkissed #ig_italia #yallersitalia #volgoitalia #vivocalabria #igerscalabria #yallerscalabria #volgocalabria #shotz_of_calabria #italy_ig #calabria_love #amepiaceilsud #turiscalabria #fromabove #seascape #travelblogger #iamatraveler #travelphotography #total_italy #beautifulplaces (at Torre Melissa, Calabria, Italy) https://www.instagram.com/p/CEd0fXMoarX/?igshid=wnsxyb9asb1j

⁣ Canon EOS 250D | 18mm | 1/20s | f/14 | ISO 100⁣ Taken on 23/02/2020.⁣ ⁣ * Repost *⁣ ⁣ It was an adventurous and fun four days in Calabria – the toe of the boot – from tasting typical food, such as the spicy pork sausage named 'Nduja, to visiting ancient villages, towns and cities dotted around the provinces of Crotone and Cosenza.⁣ ⁣ Calabria is one of the most untrammeled places for tourists in Italy, and it definitely helps to know basic Italian if you are considering moving around the region by bus. The trains, on the other hand, are straightforward enough but are only handy if you plan to visit seaside resorts.⁣ ⁣ The way things are done in this part of Italy can get hopelessly confusing at times but it somehow works, mainly thanks to the people's hospitality, generosity and understanding.⁣ ⁣ Here's a photo that I'm immensely proud of: a breathtakingly beautiful sunrise taken at the seafront in Crotone. It's worth getting up that bit earlier in order to capture unforgettable moments like this, especially since this port city is east-facing.⁣ ⁣ Crotone was in fact my base throughout the trip and it certainly paid off. The city itself has a small but down-to-earth historic centre encircling the 16th-century castle of Charles V, which is unmissable.⁣ ⁣ Oh, and you might end up learning more 'Calabrese' (local dialect) than Italian if you holiday here! 'Ndi vidimu!' (see you!).⁣ ⁣ 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲:⁣ ⁣ For heading down to Calabria by public transport, consider taking a night bus (Flix, Marino or Simet) depending on where exactly you want to go. I took Simet because it leaves from outside Alessandria station and it stops at San Giovanni in Fiore and Crotone by the middle of the morning on the following day.⁣ ______________________________________⁣ ⁣ #ig_crotone #sunrise #italia #italy #ilikeitaly #ig_italia #yallersitalia #volgoitalia #ig_calabria #turiscalabria #southitaly #suditalia #canonitalia #yallerscalabria #volgocalabria #amepiaceilsud #calabria_illife #raw_italy #thehub_italia #gf_italy #beautyinnature #tv_aqua #solotraveler #travelblogger #iamatraveler #sceniclocations #bestvacations #calabria_super_pics #travelphotography #theprettycities (at Lungomare Di Crotone) https://www.instagram.com/p/CEbzDOeoDqN/?igshid=1hu446yjttqwv

⁣ Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ ⁣ Taken on 24/02/2020.⁣ ⁣ * Repost *⁣ ⁣ I'd always longed to visit this ancient medieval hamlet – declared one of the most beautiful villages in Italy – and now I can say I finally have!⁣ ⁣ Surrounded by a wonderful hilly landscape, Santa Severina rises on a cliff at the centre of the valley with its majestic and mighty castle as its centrepiece.⁣ ⁣ The history of this breathtakingly beautiful village goes back as far as the 5th century B.C. and was colonised by the Greeks, the Romans, the Byzantines and the Arabs. As such, visitors can admire traces, remains and monuments left by these empires.⁣ ⁣ The Norman castle of Santa Severina, known as Carafa castle, was built in the 11th century in order to dominate the wide valley of the Neto river. It is a brilliant piece of engineering, and all the more so given that it stands on a craggy cliff.⁣ ⁣ From this perspective, I wanted to highlight the proximity of the historic hamlet to the modern houses built below it—literally metres apart.⁣ ⁣ 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲:⁣ ⁣ If you want to visit Santa Severina, there's only one bus that leaves from Crotone (Romano bus) Monday to Saturday, so I'd highly recommend spending the night there to enjoy your time to the fullest. ⁣ ______________________________________⁣ ⁣ #ig_crotone #alluring_villages #raw_italy #kings_villages #borghiditalia #borghipiubelliditalia #borghiitaliani #borgodeiborghi #italia #italy #ilikeitaly #turiscalabria #calabria_illife #calabriadaamare #southitaly #suditalia #italy_hidden_gems #bestdestinations #wonderful_places #loves_italy #forbestravelguide #prettylittleitaly #ig_calabria #yallerscalabria #volgocalabria #ig_italia #yallersitalia #volgoitalia #smartphonephotography #travelblog (at Santa Severina) https://www.instagram.com/p/CEbZ_R_I-Wk/?igshid=wevfh577d0it

⁣ Canon EOS 250D | 22mm | 1/500s | f/5.6 | ISO 100⁣ Taken on 22/02/2020.⁣ ⁣ A trip around the province of Crotone – or even in the region of Calabria for that matter – wouldn't be complete without visiting this gem.⁣ ⁣ Built on a small island and connected to the coast by a narrow strip of land, the 'Castello Aragonese' is absolutely impressive. There's simply no other castle like it (although it does remind me in some ways of the Aragonese Castle in Taranto in the southeastern region of Puglia).⁣ ⁣ If this landmark existed in the UK, you can bet your bottom dollar that there would be swamps of tourists all year round. Not here. And that's Calabria's charm — the 'wild west' as I like to call it.⁣ ⁣ 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲:⁣ ⁣ To get to this one-of-a-kind and yet-to-be-discovered beach resort, catch a bus from the bus station in Crotone with the company Romano, which offers a Monday–Saturday service. Tickets can be purchased on the bus at no extra cost. ⁣ ______________________________________⁣ ⁣ #lecastella #ig_crotone #turiscalabria #guardiantravelsnaps #travelphotography #bestdestinations #calabriadaamare #southitaly #suditalia #amepiaceilsud #doyoutravel #italia #italy #ilikeitaly #ig_italia #igerscalabria #yallersitalia #volgoitalia #volgocalabria #yallerscalabria #whatitalyis #lensculture #browsingitaly #best_italiansites #loves_madeinitaly #castle #iamatraveler #cntraveler #bbctravel #solotravel (at Le Castella, Calabria, Italy) https://www.instagram.com/p/CEXhWfsIaDy/?igshid=1at6s1ae6lda5
