Do you have any tips for writing Obi Wan or any meta in mind with his characterizarion?

hmmm sure why not! i'll give a few tips on how i'd write obi-wan. mind you this is how i interpret the character, so ymmv.

i truly do not like it when fics have obi-wan voluntarily leaving the order. like it's so out-of-character for me in my head that the premise of the story + the writing would have to work triple-time to get me to stick around. now if he's been removed from it by an EXTERNAL SOURCE (not the order. i cannot stress this enough: the jedi kicking obi-wan out is so jarring to me i'll leave the fic in an instant) or somehow unable to return to the order for whatever reason, all is well.

not a prodigy, but a genius. obi-wan is an incredibly intelligent person with an absolutely staggering knowledge base in a wide variety of topics, but all that knowledge was earned through blood, sweat, tears, and time. he sat down with his game face on and put in the work. that's also why he makes an excellent teacher: he knows what most students will struggle with because he struggled too, and knows through experience how best to overcome them. i headcanon that it contributes to why he's such a good negotiator: he's really good at stripping down information to the essentials and communicating that information effectively and efficiently to others because of his intense study habits.

humble, but not ignorant of his skills. it's pretty impossible to fully divorce yourself from pride in your achievements, and i don't think it's healthy to not feel any pride at all, so i think obi-wan has a very clear understanding of his skillset and how best to use it. i don't think he'd be ignorant of how good he is at something, especially since the direct consequence of his aptitude led him to being a member of the jedi council. pretty hard to be blind to your strengths when you're being asked for your input on topics that directly draw from that knowledge.

averse to healthcare. listen i enjoy obi-wan whump just as much as the next obi-wan stan (the desire to put him in the cosmic salad spinner comes with the territory, i fear) but as a character who grew up in an environment that deeply cares for the well-being of all, and knowing that you cannot help others unless you yourself first have the ability to do so, i can't really see him ignoring injuries outside of combat scenarios. like on the battlefield he's got more pressing concerns than a pesky little shrapnel wound or five, but once the battle's over?? he might not be first in line to the medics but i can't see him avoiding them entirely. an army without a general is working at a sharp disadvantage and i don't think he'd risk his men by neglecting his physical health in that manner. note that i said 'physical'. make of that what you will :)

duty. obi-wan is the definition of a paladin. he takes an oath and by the force he's going to keep it. train the boy? absolutely, qui-gon. whether or not anakin chooses to respect that training is another matter, but he did definitively get knighted! refuse to kill anakin? listen he's handed vader his own ass to him twice post order 66 and each time he did it he did it nonlethally. that takes skill. that takes dedication. exile yourself to tatooine for 19 years and then decide fuck it, we ball, and die after Once Again Deciding Not To Kill Anakin Skywalker? step aside casper, there's a new friendly ghost in town. every time obi-wan commits to something the man COMMITS. you GOTTA respect that grind.

flirty but in the sense that he's going to match the energy someone brings to the table. like he's a negotiator. he knows how to read people and figure out the Vibes. if he thinks the other person will be 1) 100% receptive and 2) will respond with a delightful wit, why the hell not? obi-wan's highest stat is charisma and he's got expertise in persuasion. whether they're allies or not does not factor into this equation. he can have a little flirtation with morally dubious and potentially hostile characters. as a treat.

this has nothing to do with his character but i firmly believe that he and quinlan vos had at LEAST a fling when they were padawans. there is zero evidence to back this up aside from a few comics where they were being goofy teenagers together but i stand by this. it is an unshakeable aspect of obi-wan to me that has only gotten worse with the kenobi show.

no matter what, no matter how terrible or devastating or downright apocalyptic it gets, obi-wan kenobi will never fall to the dark side. never. it won't be easy, but that is a line he has never, and will never cross. i will not hear any "obi-wan touched the dark side during the theed generator fight" slander. if that was true tell me why the force theme was playing during his moment of triumph!!! Would John Williams Lie To Us Like That?? to our face?????

anyways i could go on forever about obi-wan because he is My Ultimate Blorbo but this post is getting super long so i'll leave it there. hope this helped even a little or at the very least was entertaining for you to read <3

HI!!! AUGGHHHJHH THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH T__T my art style is kinda simple imo so my process is pretty bare-bones ^^;; there's not rly much too it!! it also kinda changes depending on how uhhhh lazy im feeling in the moment HAHA

probably around half of my drawings are straight to line art bc they're rly just doodles or things i decide to draw without any planning (but also im kinda impatient so i try to skip the sketching step if i can LOL...). but if i DO have a specific pose in mind for a drawing, i'll start with a sort of mannequin sketch or loose pass, then depending on how messy it is, ill either do the lineart pass on the layer on top or duplicate the sketch and then clean it up.

and then my coloring process is not sophisticated at all i just create a new layer and then paint bucket tool away LMAOOOO

here's an example of a drawing where i did sketch first ^_^

And idk if it's moreso a crackship or a rarepair that only works in an AU (HACKS up Starstruck), but Reggie's line of "...and I hope Ollie made it out too. I hope a lot of things." It's totally me reading into it but like,,,,I want them to talk because Ollie is not dead to me in my heart of hearts.

Maybe the only change is like Reggie taps into the communication on the radio in Hot Water instead of using the earpiece, so Ollie ends up hearing him also? And they end up getting along really well (with Reggie having to jump through a couple hoops to be like "haha what agency..."). There's an Agency base in the South-East coast of Australia and maybe the Agency ends up adopting him after he washes up on the shore with the escape pod (after HEAVY questioning).

1. Matcha flavours!!

Especially in Milk tea, sweets and desserts! (Mainly because it’s not overly sweet when done well, and as someone who famously does not like sweets, it can be a blessing when I’m pressured* into getting a little treat while out with friends)

2. Villainess Otome Genre!

Look, okay, just hear me out. I know it’s an overused cliche now, but when I’d just broke into it there were very few that had comprehensible English translations, so I feel like I got the golden scoop. And I’m not as much of an avid reader of manga/manwha/manhua as I was a couple years ago, so I’m not bombarded with rip offs and trend jumpers all the time. That being said, my number 1 fave villainness manga is Hamefura! (My Next Life As A Villainness) (also!! New VN Coming for it on the switch?!? I’m so excited!!)

My beloved Bakarina is the golden standard of idiot MC dialed up to 100% and she IS my daughter.

3. Isekai genre!

Yet another overused cliche, but I’m not defending myself this time lmao. As almost every isekai fan knows, the medium is over flowing with shitty-lack-lustre-power-fantasy-harem-building but every once in a while (read: every once in a million years lmao) you’ll come across a read that is generally really interesting, whether it be through a new twist on the concept or just really great characters and world-building. A particular favourite of mine is Campfire Cooking. A more recent entry (though it might be a little old now? I don’t watch often.) but it’s basically just ‘salary man makes food for magical dog who happens to have the personality of a cat’ with a bit of monsters and worldbuilding sprinkled in. 100/10 highly reccomend (AroAce bonus: there is no romance or love interest 🥰)

Edit: campfire cooking was originally a light novel I believe, but I found it through the manga - which has an amazing and really unique artstyle that the anime COMPLETELY BUTCHERED (also I love my silly dragon dork Elrand(yes it’s ripped straight from ‘Elrond’(yes I thought it was very funny and a cute lil nod)))

4. Retro/Vintage Aesthetic!

This mainly applies to furniture and decoration, I’ve grown up with a lot of retro things around myself since my parents are a fair bit older than the norm for my generation, and there’s just something so cosy about it. You’ve probably heard me ramble about it at some point in our servers together but I’m planning on getting a lot of retro furniture for myself in the coming months. I’d love to own vintage clothes but the masc leaning pieces tend to be too restricting for my tastes, I prefer looser, more casual outfits.

5. Food!!!

Self explanatory. But just in case: as someone with very little emotional or sentimental connection to physical objects and an overwhelming lack of object permanence, pretty much the only thing that is guaranteed to consistently make me happy is good food. In particular I’m partial to Japanese and Korean dishes, but Malaysian food is pretty high up there too :3

So regarding the last anon, I am personally not scared of dying but im confused on why God asked us to love one another when it comes with such painful loss ? Idk It’s just hard to comprehend.

it does suck. but the alternative is also painful, in a different way. we are a social species and not loving or being loved by others will fuck you up. it is how we grow and it is one way we experience god. grief can have those characteristics as well, if you can allow it. you have to sit with grief and get wrecked for a while, and eventually it starts to shift and you learn to live again, in a different way. sometimes it heals more or less completely, but you can't expect to be the same as before. unfortunately this is one of those situations where the only way out is through. but the crucial part is you don't have to do it alone

I finally cracked it. The placing of Lena’s scene, the exposition on the clergy, a moment on how things unfolded in the past.

Funny thing too, since Lena’s scene almost ended up exactly where it started. It just needed some foundational work, a little nudge to remind the reader of where MC came from, and where they are going. It sounds so simple in hindsight, but it was driving me insane for the longest time.

It only took a restructuring of my entire outline, a hard look at the actual themes I wanted to introduce this early, how it weaves together with the rest of the story, changing the reveals I cherished so dearly... My brain turned to goop. But! I am so satisfied with how it looks now. And with the first draft of the update having grown legs, sprinting ahead of me, I have so much to work with now! Tonight I start on the second draft, the one I will be sending to betas. (Don’t worry, I haven’t announced the need for them yet!)

I feel like I’m finally tooting the boat-horn and shouting full speed ahead!

Clara is no stranger to the strange and bewildering, but even she has to admit some amount of discomfort with this place. Something about the posture of the people in the rabbit suits, if they even are people... none of them move at all, even as one is yanked around. If they're not extremely realistic robots, then she doesn't want to know what's keeping them bound.

Still, there is that bubbling feeling that always arrives in situations like these. It's a dangerous feeling, she knows, but also a gleeful one. She can't help but be charmed by oddities.

This is nothing if not odd.

"Well, I do like being adored," Clara replies at last, and shrugs, palms out. The picture of casual innocence. "But I guess I don't know how to answer your question. My name is Clara Kelly, I like dogs, but not walks on the beach... does any of that help?"

What’s different between Livsies Delanceys and OBC Delanceys?

Honestly? Not a lot, but also a lot. Just so you know going into this, though, all my comparisons are a mix of canon and personal fanon so bear with me LOL

How are they the same?

Obviously, they're all still the Delanceys. They're the same characters in the same media just portrayed at different times! They still are hired to be thrown against the newsies and still handle the "dirtier" tasks their uncle doesn't want to deal with. But this isn't what you're asking for, so I'll spare you that massive rambling post.

How are they different?

Actors, portrayals, and personalities.

Just like any other newsie, the brothers are portrayed differently across every version of the musical because of their actors. They may share their names, they may share the general surface level goals, but they're always different. There's different interactions between each other and with the newsies, there's different things that make them tick or set them off, and there's different mannerisms with them that allude to different key personality traits. It's all about paying attention and being interested in how they differ!

Obviously since this is about Livesies vs OBC for the brothers, it's going to be about Mike Faist's Morris and Brendon Stimson's Oscar vs Devin Lewis's Morris and Anthony Norman's Oscar.

It can be quite easy to lump OBC and Livesies together when it comes to how you perceive and portray ANY of the Newsies characters. They're technically the same iteration, it makes sense! Just as it makes sense to combine different bits of the characters from Broadway, the movie, and West End! But I very much prefer separating them, sheerly because they are portrayed so differently IMO.

The biggest different I have always seen is specifically Oscar. Brendon's seems much more aloof, egotistical, and full of himself, while Anthony's feels more restrained and quiet. Like he's holding back his anger (which is very much true according to Anthony). The way they hold themselves and how they express themselves are a big enough difference to garner being considered two different iterations.

There's even more when I go into specifics (please note that the differences I perceive are based on how the versions are filmed. This is a bootleg vs a proshot, a lot of my stuff regarding OBC!Oscar is interpretation's based on movements and his voice since I cannot see his face well).

REMEMBER! I am using a mix of MOSTLY canon and some fanon interpretations for this. These are also MY things I noticed and MY perception of them. It can differ for anyone!

OBC Oscar:

is very talkative outside his scripted lines. We see him talking to newsies in the background has he hands out papers when the focus isn't on them. He motions quite a bit with his hands and comes across as a very expressive person. We also see him talking to his brother a bit more often, again being far more expressive than Morris, gesturing a lot whether it's towards the newsies or other things around them.

shows (and feels) more than anger/frustration regarding the newsies and the strike. When the strike begins and the newsies stand their ground against the brothers, Weisel, and the scabs, Oscar is more visibly shocked than anything else. He comes out in front of the paper stand when his brother backs down from Jack, and is again frantically gesturing towards the newsies. His movements read more as shocked and honestly stumped, rather than angry or eager to fight.

is quick to back down from a fight. He is INCREDIBLY all bark no bite. The only time we really see him engage in a fight (outside of the giant brawl in Seize the Day) is during Carrying the Banner, where he shoves Race. Pre Seize the Day he backs down IMMEDIATELY when newsies square him up. He doesn't even try to stand his ground like Morris. He is immediately backing away from them.

Livesies!Oscar:

is rather quiet. He doesn't interact with any of the newsies, really, outside of his scripted lines. We sometimes see him talking in the background, but it is usually only with his brother. He watches people, yeah, but he really just does not talk to anyone. He is a honestly wonderful portrayal of that quiet, seething anger that slowly builds to the point of explosion

seems to actually be scared of Jack. Oscar, ever since the interaction in Carrying the Banner (both getting hit in the shin and then kicked in the face), flinches around Jack. It's a small detail, but a visible one during the proshot (he flinches when Jack slams the paper stand when he's pissed about the price change, and he flinches in the end when Jack (playfully?) hits Oscar with papers).

is actually kinda fucking cruel. Not only is he a yesman for Weisel, he seems happy to be it too. When he punches Crutchie, he also spits on the kid. When he threatens Jack in the cellar, he seems thrilled at the idea of using his brass knuckles against him. He doesn't come across as some kid barking up the tree, he comes across as someone who has some serious fucking issues that need to be brought under control.

Morris is a bit more difficult for me to properly explain the differences of outside of general appearance. Both Faist and Devin have WONDERFUL portrayals of Morris, but they also read quite similarly. Though, I will still lay out the differences I see :). (Again, my points about OBC!Morris are based on movements and his voice, because I cannot see his face).

OBC!Morris:

is quick to act against the newsies. When he see's the opportunity to get in their way and threaten or intimidate them, he takes it. See: he goes after Crutchie when Oscar shoves Race around, he immediately rushes forward to get the newsies to back down when they first go after the scabs, and he LUNGES forward to get the discarded papers before Jack and stands his ground against Jack for a while. Morris is in their faces as much as possible and is not afraid to move forward and be aggressive and threatening.

acts less like an egotistical yesman and more of a meat shield, both for his uncle and for his brother. He doesn't have the air of egotistical confidence that his brother has. Rather, he's more just... neutral, I'd say. He constantly steps up to his brothers defense (can be seen during the strike when the newsies go after Oscar) and more-so stands around as the intimidating chess piece Weisel has to move around rather than a guy there to back up his uncle's words.

is far more calm and calculated. Morris isn't one to run around or move/speak sharply. He is calm, he is calculated, and he is thorough. He's the definition of stone-faced if you ask me. When he delivers his threats, he delivers them flatly. Not in a bad way, more... deadpan, matched with unwavering certainty that it is almost impossible to determine if he is bluffing or not. He stands rigidly (both normally and when he is up hovering over the newsies keeping watch), he walks calmly, and he threatens the newsies with such a stagnant aura of confidence that you can't imagine him being loud or boisterous. He doesn't run from Jack in the cellar, he doesn't laugh, he barely even moves. He doesn't gesture like his brother and he barely wavers from his more intimidating stance.

Livesies!Morris:

is extremely expressive and wears his feelings and thoughts on his sleeves. He is a lot more physical and expressive when it comes to dealing with the newsies and how he reacts to them. He scoffs at Jack's threats, he slams the gate near Race's face when the newsie makes fun of him and his brother, he spreads his arms in that "try me" gesture when accusing the newsies of trespassing, and slams his fist on the press and points to it when threatening Jack. Honestly, that entire bit in the cellar he is much more animated than OBC. He throws the cover at Jack, he giggles at his own tormenting, and he fucking sticks his tongue out lmao.

craves violence and is far more eager to fight. Morris actively throws himself at the newsies multiple times. He jumps at the idea of tormenting Crutchie during Seize the Day and he nearly lunges at the newsies when they start to charge the scabs. He has to be held back by his uncle and actively throws a mini fit when he's shoved back. When it comes to the actual strike and the strike breakers come in to stop the newsies, he SKIPS in, he is EAGER to be there and to get his hands on the newsies.

is an accidental yesman to his brother and uncle. Despite having the exact same lines as OBC, Morris comes across as though he is backing up his family rather than acting on his own thoughts and threats. Going after Crutchie in Carrying the Banner feels more like an afterthought of "ooh! Violence! My brother started this I want some too!" than his own action of his own volition. Same with his threat during Seize the Day. He acts on the words and actions of others, he is tied to them. I feel like if you separated him and put him alone, he would be almost useless against anyone going after him. He is nothing without his brother (and, honestly, his brother is nothing without him).

In the end, they are still the same characters from technically the same iteration, just about 6 years apart. But to watch them and listen to them and pick them apart? It's so interesting coming across their differences and interpreting them. What matters to me, though, is the overall comparison that it came down to for me:

The OBC brothers hold each other up and fight tooth and nail for each other, while the Livesies brothers need each other to stand against the newsies but can fend on their own. It's not a big difference? But at the same time it is a big enough difference in nuance. They still care about each other in both iterations, but the way they help each other and defend each other are very different. We see them stepping up to back up the other more often in OBC, but in Livesies we see them standing back to back against the newsies during Seize the Day.

I just think it's neat to write them differently :D

i just got into mc let’s plays of any kind a month or so ago, and into hermitcraft around the same time via gem, but i am,,, lost. i’ve only really watched gem and pearl, and impulse’s streams will autoplay while i’m not paying attention. if i want to really jump into this hyperfixation, where do i start? how much content am i getting into? should i watch everyone’s videos or can i mostly pick and choose? what about double life?

i’m glad i can hop in while it’s current, but i have NO idea where to go/how to catch up/how much real lore there is, and i’ve seen so much fan content that i do not understand lmao

Welcome to MCYT! I'm so happy others are still getting into it! You are joining at a fantastic time honestly, the content is top-notch and the fandom is thriving.

Now the one thing I say to people getting into anything mcyt related is, please do not try to watch everyone's content, whether it be videos or streams. That is the fastest way to burn out and there are about a billion content creators, so it will eventually start to feel like a chore to try and keep up with everything.

I currently watch an absurd amount of mcyt content and even then there are only about 5-6 people that I watch everything they produce consistently. The best thing you can do is have a few people you main and just pop into other videos occasionally to see what they are doing.

Thankfully there is very little that you need to know to get into hermitcraft, even on an episode to episode basis. Lore tends to be really, really informal on the server, with the exception of season 8. I want to say lore is generally more of a plot device to encourage hermit interactions, rather than a strict story with characters and plot lines.

I saw you've seen my post on getting into hermitcraft and how you should start with season 9 - I still recommend that. Season 9 is currently hitting mid-season which is when hermits start focusing on their mega bases and mega projects. It's not too far into the season so you should be able to catch up quickly if you find a few hermits that you like. But I know it can be daunting to hop into a season that's 20-30 episodes in, so honestly, I would just watch the latest episode from a hermit you want to watch and see if you like the vibes. You can always re-watch the backlog later.

To start finding a hermit to like I suggest either watching one and branching out from there (or the “Grian Effect(TM)” as Redwinterroses calls it lmao) or another great way to see which hermits you could vibe with is to watch the hermitcraft recap. They summarise the best things that happened that week on the server and give a great run down of the different hermits. Check out the hermitcraft site for a full list of members and latest videos.

Some personal suggestions though if you like Gem and Pearl is GoodTimesWithScar, VintageBeef, Cubfan, False and Impulse. Also I'm being incredibly biased when I say this because he is my favourite, but Etho has just started his season so if you want to watch along with everyone else you should check out his videos!

What kind of things do you like watching or what things are you looking for? I can give some better recs if needed :)

If you are looking for something a little more story heavy and with a touch more lore, Empires season 2 has just started and its also looking incredibly promising. It's not affiliated with hermitcraft, but there is a little crossover with the members so the vibes are good over there as well. I think the full member list is on the Empires Wiki.

Now Double Life is part of a series separate to hermitcraft run by Grian that just happens to have a lot of hermits in it lol You don't have to watch double life to watch hermitcraft, it's more of a short-form, death games series that's very personality-driven. It's a great way to see a bunch of different creators hanging with people they normally wouldn't.

You've got 3rd Life (season 1), Last Life (s2) and Double Life (s3) and thankfully you don't have to watch the previous seasons to appreciate any of the others. Bit of self promo here lol but I actually have viewing guides for which POV's to watch for both 3rd Life and Last Life if you want to check it out.

But yeah, some fan content can be a little obscure lol You're welcome at anytime to come ask me questions for things that just seem to come out of no where. Like how Rendog is now king of the server, which is definitely a throw back to how he became the Red King on 3rd Life but he only became king there because he was wearing a skin with a crown on it from winning MCC (blue bats 9 my beloved). It's all messy and super intertwined, and sometimes it doesn’t make sense at all but most people in hermitblr are super happy to answer any questions and love to ramble as much as me lol

I agree that it can be super confusing about knowing where to start so I hope this helped. Thankfully I'm more familar with the hermitcraft/empires/life series side of mcyt but I did do a little bit of time in dsmp so if you have any questions for there, just let me know :)
