I was going to wait to expand my thoughts on that last post but now I'm motivated, let's talk about disgust.

I had an interesting conversation with a friend a week ago, who's an outsider to all this bimbo fetish stuff, and they said this, which struck a chord with me immediately.

As much commentary there is about unrealistic and artificial beauty standards being pushed and average women (average people, really) being made to feel insecure, the reality is that most people will prefer "natural" beauty and what they consider sincere -- real. It's an extension of the Madonna-whore complex and goes back what I said about respectability. The ideal woman, to a lot of men, is a woman who would make a good wife and homemaker. In the long-term they want a woman who's proper, that they can view as a human being. This is not a new idea, not remotely. Think of Super Freak,

Legally Blonde, The Girl Can't Help It. There's the woman you (men) see as a sex object and the woman you (men) see as a partner. Take Legally Blonde for example, Elle Woods is far from a bimbo but she's treated as one because she doesn't have the "right" look or attitude for a political career. Despite being smart, capable, and not slutty at all she's still too feminine to be taken seriously by Warner, she's an embarrassment.

In The Girl Can't Help It (1956) you have an inversion of that. Jerri Jordan is a Madonna (loves cooking, cleaning, wants to have several children) but her gangster boyfriend wants her to act like the whore, which she very much looks like, being played by Jayne Mansfield.

And there's so many more examples I can bring up (like Drake's entire career), but I think I've got my point across. Or have I? My point is that, historically, men don't really like women who look or act sexy. Or at least don't respect them. And part of that is tied to the look. It's actually not the norm or even that popular to like women who are very "done-up" and fake-looking, or women who are sexy of their own volition, despite what porn has told you. I CONSTANTLY see men talk about pornstars have "ruined" themselves by getting plastic surgery. But it's usually the "ruination" that attracted me to that pornstar, model, actress, or whatever in the first place.

There's also the botched surgery subreddit. On more than one occasion I've seen women I follow because I think they're very hot reposted there to be gawked at and called gross, sad, and disgusting by thousands of men and women. Same pattern on Twitter. A repost of a sex worker I follow will go viral with a caption like "surgeries are getting out of hand." Millions of disgusted gawkers and commentators.

Personally, I never got the memo. And my admitted unasthamed attraction to these women who look and act the whore was seen by my peers as an indication of desperation rather than a preference or I guess more accurately, a fetish.

Some people think bimbos should be cute or traditionally attractive, I don't. I think it's hot when a woman acts obnoxious and looks sloppy and ridiculous, like a parody of a woman. Or a bastardization of the human form itself.

I knew there was a disconnect when the last season of a Euphoria aired and people were mocking Chloe Cherry for her lips and saying she looked weird while referring to Sydney Sweeney as a bimbo.

To me, the bimbo exists in obscenity. She openly expresses her own sexuality, primps and preens herself to a vulgar degree, and is dumb as fuck. It's like if you took the stereotypical whore, of the Madonna-whore dichotomy, and turned her up to the nth degree. Like a whore monster. Not only is she the opposite of what men respect, to the point she becomes unattractive to most, but also an affront to public decency. And in that way, like my friend said, the performance of femininity becomes masculine. In expressing what she does the way she does the bimbo becomes both the embodiment and antithesis of male desire. For most men she's just... too much. Too dumb, too sexy, too fake, too confident, too over-the-top.

As @severedsheriff put it, the attraction is the taboo. The appeal can be found in the lack of appeal. I suppose a woman being dumb, plastic, and provocative is a bit more accepted now than it was in the early 2000s, but just barely.

The Great Gatsby & Mansfield Park

These two books, written by very different people in very different eras, give me the same feeling. The first time I read Mansfield Park, the similar feeling was from this line:

They were careless people, Tom and Daisy – they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness, or whatever it was that kept them together, and let other people clean up the mess they had made.

Because the first time I saw the book as Fanny did, I saw the Crawfords as invaders who kind of ruined this family and then escaped without being harmed, but then I read it again and I realized that what really makes me sad in each book is the sadness of unachievable dreams.

Gatsby never gets Daisy, Edmund never gets Mary. Both of them couldn’t see the real woman. Edmund will not listen and sees what he wants to exist. Gatsby sees Daisy as a representation of wealth and success not as an actual human with a past and emotions.

Both family structures, Daisy & Tom and the Bertrams, are superficially beautiful and yet inwardly rotten (with the exception of Edmund, mostly)

Nick Caraway and Fanny Price both occupy a strange liminal space where they are within and outside of higher society.

Jordan Baker and Mary Crawford both kind of watch the action from the sidelines and don’t get involved in the morality. Both lose their love interest because of how they react to the climax of the story.

Nick and Fanny both do this strange thing where at first they don’t seem to really be participants in the story, but kind of strange narrator-observers but as time go on they take more of the stage

The hollow morality of the rich, disillusionment with society

Something between Gatsby and Fanny, where they are both raised up socially (Gatsby by his wealth and Fanny by her family), but they aren’t fully there and no one treats them as a equal. They are neither rich nor poor, they don’t fit anywhere. To oppose my point above a little, Nick knows how to fit, he isn’t fully in the club because he has a job and is poor. But Gatsby makes social errors and doesn’t seem to pick up cues, because he doesn’t have the education. Fanny has only a part of the education and no wealth. Her own conciousness of how poorly she merits a place in the society she lives in. But then she doesn’t fit in Portsmouth anymore either..

So anyway, despite being very different, these books occupy the same real estate in my head because I get a similar vibe from them. Someday I want to do a sort of crossover but I’m not totally sure how. Interestingly, while I have written varations to make Mansfield Park end happily, I don’t have the same compunction with The Great Gatsby. Maybe it’s because I literally don’t know how to fix it. Obviously you could send Gatsby home on time from WWI, but would Daisy really choose him? Would they actually be happy? If anything I want to write a nice happy ending for Jordan Baker.

tell me more about classic filk i know a few songs but never got deep into it

Heck YEAH

"Filk" is music (often but not always folk music-style, often but not always song parodies to the tune of famous pre-existing songs) about sci-fi, fantasy, and other fannish topics. Filk circles are popular events at science fiction conventions, and that's really where the genre started. The word "filk" actually arose from a typo in a convention program once, and people just rolled with it ever since!

Some of the most iconic albums in the filk world are the anthology albums "Minus Ten And Counting" (songs about space exploration and the real-life space program), "Carmen Miranda's Ghost" (songs about sci-fi space shenanigans and space ghosts), and "Finity's End: Songs of the Station Trade" (songs set in the world of CJ Cherryh's Alliance-Union novels, and my personal favorite. I've never read any of CJ Cherryh's books, but these songs paint such a vivid world.) "Space Heroes and Other Fools" is another big one, it's more hit-or-miss for me but it's iconic. Other really good and foundational ones are "Divine Intervention" by Julia Ecklar, "Avalon is Risen" by Leslie Fish, and "We Are Who We Are" by Vixy & Tony.

I lean more towards sci-fi and space than fantasy, but fantasy and paganism are huuuugely popular filk topics too.

Some of the most popular names to look into include Leslie Fish (intensely prolific, barely a fraction of her work is on any streaming or music service), Julia Ecklar (famous for her "ose," the filk-world word for sad songs - because they're "ose, more-ose, and even more-ose), Juanita Coulson, Kristoph Klover, Vic Tyler (who just recently died :( rest in peace), Duane Elms, Kathy Mar, Bob Kanefsky, Alexander James (trans, with lots of filk under his previous name as well), Vixy & Tony, and Seanan McGuire. (I like Seanan McGuire's filk music better than her books, hah.) Some other great ones include Cat Faber (most acapella), Astrisoni, The PDX Broadsides, Kari Maaren, and Sassafrass (also mostly acapella. Includes Ada Palmer). Heather Dale, Tom Lehrer, and Jonathan Coulton are kind of honorary filkers too haha.

The best place to get the ones from 80s and 90s cassettes are on the Internet Archive or Youtube; a few filkers who are more currently active have their stuff on Bandcamp.

The Gallery of Beauties (Schönheitengalerie) is a collection of 38 small portraits of the most beautiful women from the nobility and middle classes of Munich, Germany painted between 1827 and 1850 (mostly by Karl Joseph Stieler, appointed court painter in 1820) and gathered by Ludwig I of Bavaria in the south pavilion of Nymphenburg Palace in Munich. Two additional ones were created by Friedrick Drück and one portrait was stolen in the XXth century and remains missing.

The set includes all the 38 portraits, with the original frame swatches, fully recolorable. The portraits are of:

This is the first time the Manhattan D.A.’s Office will have an executive position focusing on these priority areas. The Office recently announced the creation of its first-ever Housing & Tenant Protection Unit, which investigates and prosecutes landlords and developers for systemic harassment of tenants and abuse of government programs. Colangelo will provide support to the Unit and deepen the Office’s relationships with stakeholders, drawing on his three years spent as the Chief of Staff at the U.S. Department of Labor, his work as Deputy Director of the Obama-Biden Administration’s National Economic Council, three years at the Civil Rights Division of the Department of Justice, and seven years litigating fair housing and fair employment cases at the NAACP Legal Defense & Educational Fund.

Colangelo brings a breadth of relevant experience, most recently his two years at the U.S. Department of Justice, where he served in a senior leadership position and helped to oversee the Antitrust, Civil, Civil Rights, Environment and Natural Resources, and Tax Divisions, including review of significant hate crime matters. In his time at the New York State Office of the Attorney General, he was Chief Counsel for Federal Initiatives, leading more than eighty lawsuits challenging federal agency action on constitutional and statutory grounds. This work included representing three dozen states and local governments in a successful challenge to the inclusion of a citizenship question on the decennial census, challenging the federal policy of conducting immigration arrests at state courthouses, supervising civil and criminal labor prosecutions, and investigating the Trump Foundation.
