Hiya! My friend recently had to put her party/scare mix up for adoption, her name is jawbreaker, she's not usually friendly, but I've known her since my friend first adopted her (she was a baby) I'm afraid she might go to a bad home, and I'm considering adopting her, but I have no clue where to start w/ anything (feeding, enclosure, toys, etc.) Any tips or suggestions?

Oh dear, what a terrible situation! I would hope that you could take her, as it is best for clowns to go to people they at least know... Here are my best tips for our dear Jawbreaker.

Feeding: 

Scare clowns require a diet of 95% halloween candy, but they can have fruits and meat as an occasional treat. Many scare clowns are attracted to bubblegum but it gets stuck in their sharp teeth and can cause some problems later when swallowed. Avoid it if you can.

Enclosures:

With a party/scare mix I would suspect that she would need quite a bit of room to do her tricks and japery. Scare clowns tend to like darker lit places such as sewer tunnels or abandoned Chuck E Cheeses where they can loom ominously or jump out as needed. Too bright of a light and they tend to squeeze themselves under couches and beds to avoid it. (This is how we get the classic horror clown under the bed trope.) I would say a standard scare tent would be amenable as long as it has plenty of dark corners to hide/loom ominously in.

Toys:

Like all clowns, scare clowns love children! In a standard troupe scare clowns are usually the protector of the nest and its clownlings so giving the scare a baby doll or stuffed animals to dote on is always a good idea. Funhouse mirrors are also great enrichment, and I’ve never met a scare clown who doesn’t like a good cardboard box to hide in. Due to their party heritage they may also enjoy party crackers, balloons and cream pies, but all clowns are different in their preferences, see what Jawbreaker responds to!

Etc:

Clowns are very social creatures that require a lot of attention, so do consider their socialization as well. If you have the time and the inclination, look into adopting another clown for them to bond with. Otherwise, regular trips to the clown park are necessary. Clowns that tend to do well with scare and horror clowns tend to be Juggalos, drag queens, flame-eaters, English sword-throwers and surprisingly teacup porcelains. Meanwhile Party clowns tend to be amenable with North American pratfalls, birthday clowns and jack-in-the-boxes.
