Kirk Degiorgio - Modal Forces / Percussive Forces - his new library music LP
Like a long-lost Holy Grail album from the mid-seventies, Kirk Degiorgio’s latest project explores both Modal Jazz and Seventies Jazz Fusion in the Library album format. Side One swings with a vengeance with its tight arrangements built around acoustic bass, electric piano and glorious analogue synth leads and side 2 takes us on a journey of funk fuelled, percussive workouts and heavy breaks. The contribution of renowned session drummer Chris Whitten adds to the authenticity of the album as does the use of vintage, analog synths. The Library album was predominant in TV and film studios in Italy and France with composers creating background, incidental and scene music for use in TV and movie production. In recreating the sound library format Kirk Degiorgio has revelled in both the creative freedom and the test of melodic capability that the short form of the Library album allows. As Kirk says, 'the skill with this kind of composing is to be able to express your ideas and thoughts in a maximum of two minutes at a time.' Kirk Degiorgio is a DJ, composer and music lover whose influences, from family and then going out to clubs from under-18 discos to attending the Belvedere Arms and 'Shoom' and working in Reckless Records, cover all genres of Black music. From Soul, Jazz-Funk, Funk and then House and Detroit Techno Kirk has a love and an appreciation for how all these sounds work together and evolve from each other.

Together they formed Fingers Inc with Ron Wilson and released a series of excellent singles such as ‘Mysteries Of Love’ or the instantly recognisable house standard ‘Can You Feel It’. In 1985 Robert met pioneering Chicago producer Larry Heard, who invited him into his studio. Growing up in the poor areas of Chicago and L.A Robert used music as his inspiration to channel his energy but his entry into the world of house music came originally not through Robert’s singing but DJing at block parties and smaller clubs in Chicago. Like many other great vocalists, Robert Owens began his career singing in church gospel choirs. ‘Tears’, ‘I’ll Be Your Friend’ and ‘Ordinary People’ are just some of the tunes that have borne his black velvet voice and gone on to become truly classic dance records.

AllMusic Staff Pick: Metamatics A Metamatics Production
Covering the four Metamatics EPs released on Clear during early 1997, A Metamatics Production charts the duo's course across abstract drum'n'bass and polar electro soundscapes. Equally comfortable working with breaks as with a four-four beat, Metamatics' sublime Detroit shadings and crisp percussion makes Kirk Degiorgio's As One project its closest precursor. The sublime electro update "Dope for the Robot" is the highlight.

Neuropolitique - “Switchback” DJ-Kicks by Carl Craig Song released in 1995. Mix released in 1996. Techno
***Song starts at 49:37 and ends at 52:24***
Neuropolitique was the stage name used by Matt Cogger, a subtle techno pioneer in the UK. Born in Britain, he moved to Detroit in the 80s to immerse himself in the city's techno scene. At the dawn of the 90s, he took what he had learned and brought the Motor City sound back with him to England. Sean Cooper, writing for AllMusic, expands on his story:
Cogger's first exposure to dance music was (not uncommonly) electro and early hip-hop, which he helped promote as a member of a sound system which also included Lee Purkis (aka Insync of 10th Planet). As hip-hop became more commercial, Cogger became increasingly interested in the emerging acid house movement, picking up the legendary House Sound of Chicago compilation in 1986 and immersing himself in the club scene. Drawn to the bizarre experiments of early Detroit techno, Cogger met up with Derrick May at a party in 1989 and made offhanded plans to visit the producer at his Detroit home. Two months later, Cogger was knocking on May's door, having left London to dry out from acid house's drug-addled "summer of love" and learn something about this music he couldn't leave alone. Cogger began working at May's studio, engineering a number of popular records, and soon began cutting tracks with Marty Bonds, including "Mind You Don't Trip." His first solo work was the "Artemis" single, later released on Kirk Degiorgio's Applied Rhythmic Technology (A.R.T.) label (Cogger met Degiorgio at May's studio when Degiorgio was over from London on a record-buying trip). A.R.T.'s assocation with the New Electronica label led to Cogger releasing a number of influential tracks and a trio of full-lengths on the label as Neuropolitique (derived from a book by Timothy Leary).
One of those full-lengths on New Electronica was his sophomore album, Are You Now Or Have You Ever Been, released in 1995. It contains a great, mechanically metallic track called "Switchback". In 1996, Carl Craig featured it on his fantastic DJ-Kicks mix for Stud!o K7, which did a lot to raise Cogger's profile.
The influence that Detroit had on Cogger's style of production is on a "does a bear shit in the woods?" level of obviousness here. This song is just a superb sonic reflection of the bleakly dystopian, dulled chrome character that the Michigan metropolis is known for exuding. Cogger works high-pitched and knife-sharp, droning, dusty string stabs, rattling authoritarian closed-hat and snare pounds, and a kick drum into a hypnotically rapid lather, underlying it with a paranoid faint hint of humming acid. Throughout the song, Cogger alters the sound of his strings and its undergirding layer as the snare and hat combo remain a constant. But after about two minutes, those snares, which were once tight and in unison, break apart from each other, and generate a less predictable clatter.
I read on the Discogs forums that at some point Cogger would fall out of love with producing music, sell his studio, and become a barman. You'd probably be bitter too after making such magic and receiving such little recognition for it. But he came back in 2010, dropping some new songs and launching a SoundCloud account. However, in late 2014, he lost his life to a bout with cancer.
RIP to Neuropolitique, a brilliant and highly underrated artist who was one of techno's unsung pioneers in Britain.
