Hey hey Professor! I got another question: how the heck to tell the difference between Celtic and Viking art patterns…? Such as the knots and the braiding… I feel like the only way I can tell a little is by imagining the coloring -if I want to color this one to be like spring or summer(bright, lively colors) then it might be Celtic; and if I want to color that one like autumn or winter(dim, low key colors) then it’s probably Viking… 🥲yea I can only tell a little bit by seeing them as what Norway and Ireland would wear for fashion choices. It’s hard.

😌😌 I feel weirdly prepared for this question ✨ I did take a class on Celtic Civilizations when I studied in Glasgow, and Norse/Viking art is close to what I am writing my master thesis on atm, so I shall try my best to illustrate.

Celtic art is varied, but across the British Isles the most distinguished patterns are knotworks, triskele and La Téne style. Knotworks are often very symmetrical and repeating, organic shapes and patterns, while triskele and La Téne style is recognized by the organic spirals in three branches. Celtic metalwork is often in gold and with red details (examples under the cut). You also have the beautiful Pictish stoneslabs with animals and symbols - influenced by La Téne style.

Viking art goes through many different periods and styles, but is mostly recognized by the intricate and detailed animal patterns, often un-symmetrical. (examples under the cut). When it comes to metalwork the Vikings highly favoured silver.

I realize now I should have drawn Ireland and not Scotland, but they are both Celtic so

Here's Jamie “Muraena” Traverse and Corbin “Merlot” Michel. Both are characters I larped as in the Life Beyond universe. Corbin in Libe: Rajapinta (2021) and Jamie in Libe: Virheilmiö (2022). I've written that they meet up after the end of Virheilmiö, since they share couple contacts, are both in the Devon Academy and part of La Téne (a political separatist group).

They also share the same mishap of reding the Yellow Book. Jamie by choice and hunger for knowledge, Corbin by being placed as a human experiment by the academy.

They're now my babies and I'd do anything for them. I also have an upcoming Libe: Aamunkajo larp in two weeks, I've been assigned the role of a retired Finnish reverend who studies angels and the odd in a cult. Sounds promising.

Los celtas formaron parte de los pueblos indoeuropeos que habitaron Anatolia o las estepas entre el mar Negro y el mar Caspio. Estos emigraron a Europa mientras otras ramas se desplazaron a Irán o India. Su etapa de desarrollo comienza en la Edad del Hierro en torno al año 1200 a.C. cuando dejaron de ser nómadas pastoriles y se convirtieron en sociedades sedentarias y agrícolas.

Fue Heródoto el primero en referirse a estos pueblos como tales en torno al siglo V a.C. Hoy es complicado decir si esos pueblos hablaban lenguas celtas antes de ese siglo y también resulta difícil saber si tenían una cultura común. Hoy se les a unido más por el grupo lingüístico.

El termino celta deriva del griego keltoi, ellos se llamaban a sí mismos como gal. En el siglo V a.C. los griegos identificaron a una tribu celta hoy llamada cultura de la Téne, que estaba dispersa en el centro de Europa. En torno al siglo VII a.C. otros pueblos indoeuropeos llegaron a la península Ibérica. También se extendieron a Francia, la Gran Bretaña, el centro de Europa y los Balcanes.

En torno al siglo IV a.C. los celtas prosperaron y crearon ciudades fortificadas que sirvieron de centros comerciales y políticos. En esa época también aparecieron los druidas, una de las figuras más famosas de esa cultura.

Una de las primeras menciones de los celtas las encontramos en torno al 390 a.C. cuando en torno a su líder Breno se apoderaron de Roma. Después, los romanos lucharon de manera exitosa contra los galos cisalpinos y transalpinos. Con el pasar de los siglos Hispania quedó sometida a Roma, al igual que Galia y Britania.

A finales del Imperio romano los celtas habían quedado reducidos a noroeste de Francia, Irlanda, Gales y Escocia. De ellos se deriva la celebración de Halloween. Los autores griegos y romanos los definen como jactanciosos, turbulentos y valientes guerreros. Su vestimenta era de colores y bien ornamentados proveniente de la lana. Sus casas eran de madera cubiertas de paja y estaban unificadas en cerros fortificados.

El culto a sus dioses estaba a cargo de los druidas, quienes también educaban a los menores. Sus dioses estaban relacionados con los bosques, las montañas y los ríos. El roble era considerado como un árbol sagrado.

En una habitación oscura que parecería que no tiene ni paredes ni esquinas, se encuentra… alguien, un tipito, si es que buscamos ser más descriptivos

Aquel tipito no tiene ni la menor idea de cómo llegó ahí, a la habitación que a este punto podríamos llamar mundo, ya que es prácticamente infinita.

“Bue, con la vida se sigue que se yo”

Pensó en voz alta, caminando sin mucho rumbo.

El tipito seguía caminando hasta que una voz femenina dijo

“Tu has de identificarte! Acércate a las luces”

Clack, se prendió una luz, anda a saber de dónde venían, el tipito no miro para arriba, sino a lo que alumbraba, esto siendo un colegio.

El tipito se queda un poco más mirando sin que nada pase.

“Vamos, hablá” dijo la voz

“¿Quién yo? Ah! Ehhhhhhhhhhh (pensando) Ah! Creo que estudió acá” respondió el tipito

“Dime más” insistió la voz

“Por favor no me vuelvas a mostrar esto” dijo el tipito con una sonrisa y poco después seguir de largo caminando anormalmente rápido.

Otra luz se encendió enseñando instrumentos musicales, el tipito casi se los había pasado.

“Faaaaaa ¡re loco!, ojala supiese tocar alguno” dijo el tipito impresionado

“¿Qué tal esto?” respondió la voz

De una manera que parecía magia los instrumentos desaparecieron y se reemplazaron por saxofones.

“Copado, dame todos” mencionó el tipito

Una vez más el tipito siguió de largo y otra vez más una luz se prendió ante él mostrando unos ravioles con crema.

“¡RAVIOLES!” Exclamó el tipito

Inmediatamente después, unas aceitunas mágicamente cayeron sobre el plato de ravioles.

“Esta bien, se los saco y ya está” dijo el tipito con reducido entusiasmo

Las aceitunas, increíblemente, se cortaron en mil pedazos ni bien esas palabras salieron de la boca del tipito.

“… Bueno, por lo menos tiene la crema ahogando el sa…”

El tipito no pudo ni terminar la oración cuando vio una rodaja de tomate crudo caer en adivina donde.

“¡Ay por favor, tiene que ser un chiste! Esto es ridiculo, me voy” exclamo el tipito con ira

El tipito intento seguir de largo, sin embargo, una figura encapuchada apareció frente suyo y lo detuvo

“Observá” dijo suavemente la capucha de donde venía de la voz

Y el tipito observó mientras observaba mientras decenas de luces se prendian y mostraban cada uno fragmentos de lo que era de alguna manera manteniendo la habitacion oscura

“Ahora, decínos, ¿Quien sos?”

“Ni idea, en fin ¿Por que cambiaste de tuteo a voseo?” menciona el tipito

“Ténes que decirnos quien sos” exclamo la voz

“Que se yo, recien aparecí” dijo el tipito sintiendo su corazon acelerando

“Si no nos decís quien sos corre en peligro tu ser”

“¿Que?”

“Arriesgas tu identidad”

“¡No!”

El tipito estaba a segundos de desmayarse hasta que vio una luz. Hipnotizado, el tipito caminaba muy lentamente, ignorando lo que le estaban diciendo

“¡Espera! ¿¡Que estas haciendo!? ¡Volve!” ordeno la encapuchada

“¿Querés saber quien soy? Espera a que pase por la luz y te digo.

El tipito siguio caminando hasta que la luz envolvió completamente su cuerpo, haciendolo completamente invisible.

Hi! I would need your help if you can, do you have infos or ressources about Celtic clothing in general and Gallic ones in particular? When I do my own research I'm usually redirected towards Nordic and Viking clothes and I don't know how much they actually overlap.

I'm very sorry it took me embarrassingly long to answer! It got buried into my drafts, sorry! D:

I have tried to research this too before, and I also noticed it's super hard to find reliable sources. The trouble is that there's very little primary sources available and there's a ton of unreliable information about Celts and their clothing around the internet.

Celtic clothing is very varied since Celtic culture was not unified and covered a wide area. In general and especially when it comes to Gallic people their clothing seems to resemble much more Greek and Roman clothing than Viking clothing, but adjusted for colder climates. They used mostly wool dyed in bright colors.

Here's for an example reconstruction of a La Téne dress. It resembles in shape the Greek peplos.

I found this very extensive essay by a costuming guilt with a lot of primary sources and reconstructions of them, very handy. It covers Celtic clothing from Bronze Age to 6th century.

Men wore tunics and fairly fitting trouser-like garments called braccae in continental (including Gallic) Celtic cultures.

Gaellic people (Irish, Scots etc.) wore a tunic type garment called léine from at least post-Roman empire to Renaissance. Men and women wore their own versions of it. Here's a source and another for léine, if you are interested.

Lastly I found this interesting research paper on Gallic women's dress, which I would at least trust as a good source. It's behind a paywall though, but I have access to in through my uni. If you can't access it, I can make a post about it, I just haven't had time to dwell really deep into it yet.

yes. and also no. hmm... im unsure. you prefer this new "celtic" design or my original one, more similiar to the ones in the manga? i’d like to know your opinions! 

In order: Lazulite, Taaffeite, Sillimanite, Hercynite and the big Ballas.

so. why are they dressed like this? 

because i based the "Mountain Island" my HNK OC live in to the Alps (a smol reconstructions. the Alps are HUGE and their archipelago is big, but not THAT big), and their society to the Bronze Age ones living on the Alps. 

(Particularly to the Golasecca culture, Hallstatt and La Téne, pile dwellings of the Alps, Insubria prehistory, Val Camonica rock drawings)

And these societies were the predecessors to Celts. They were cool. So i tried to give them outfits that could remind of these societies (i used historically accurate references)

Also let me introduce to you Ballas, the big guy on the right! He’s tecnically a bort, but... rounder? Ballas is an incredibly though variety of diamond, shaped as a ball. Thats why its called “ballas”. And he’s big and he is a guard, as his older brother Champagne Diamond.
