Darkness also known as Leif Jonker’s Darkness

Darkness is a 1993 Vampire movie made by writer/director/cinematographer/SFX artist Leif Jonker. Filmed on Super-8 in the summer/fall of 1990 in Wichita, Kansas and nearby Augusta, Kansas on a budget of $5000 by a cast and crew who’s ages averaged around 17 years old. Part of the production costs were raised by Jonker and lead actor/co-SFX artist, Gary Miller, selling their blood to a local blood bank. The film was considered a “demo tape” by many involved, to showcase Jonker’s movie making and special effects abilities. When production wrapped there was no money left to scan and transfer the movie to video, so Jonker and Miller simply projected the film from the camera onto a piece of white cardboard with a VHS Camcorder filming to make the “edits”. The movie is a truly creative tour-de force of what you can do with true dedication and creativity. Highly recommended for fans of low budget gore-fests.

The “Vampire Version” is a mid-2000s recut, finally scanned from the original elements. Having seen both the VHS and this edition, the big differences are mostly in the audio and the visual quality. The word is Jonker is working on a Blueray release so hopefully that will make this movie easier to see for the general public.
