Five seconds of awkward silence, then few more of odd glances, the bell rang to mark the end of another school day. The see you tomorrow’s were meager, the waved goodbyes much more for the quick runs to their parent’s car, the buses to take them home or the luckier few walked down with their friends, to hang out elsewhere, or at least that’s how Sherry viewed it, from a corner, backpack at her feet and arms crossed.
‘‘Sherry!’’
Her head whipped to the direction of her name, quick to grab her bag. ‘‘Hey! A little late, traffic?’’
‘‘Had to drop some files at work, actually,’’ arm thrown around the smaller shoulders, Claire smiled with a hint of sadness. ‘‘Hey, when we’re done, how about I make you something?’’
‘‘I’d like that.’’
From a corner rounded a black Chevrolet Tahoe, inconspicuous by all other means, unless one took a closer look and noticed it to be armored and with a license plate different from most. Though Claire tried her best to hide her apprehension, she still guided Sherry in, always an arm around the shoulders and keeping her closer than usual, more so once inside, greeted by the silence of the suited-up man.

‘‘I don’t want to eat anything for the following month,’’ she groused, scrunching up her nose.
‘‘Heh, no dinner dates until after September, gotcha.’’ Chuckling, Leon jumped down first, looked both ways, behind him then ahead, before finally turning around with his arms raised. ‘‘Coast’s clear, c’mon.’’
His arms cushioned her fall, one hand on her back and the other around her knees, then let her down onto her feet. Leon picked up the knife from the ground and handed it over, to which she nodded and smiled halfway.
‘‘We shouldn’t be too far,’’ Claire said, pulling out a paper from her jacket’s pocket, ‘‘he said she was last seen a couple alleys away.’’
‘‘If that’s so it’s short-staffed ‘round here.’’
Claire raised an eyebrow, sliding her knife in its sheath around her thigh, ‘‘Really? Don’t think nine J’avos in a row is enough?’’
‘‘Well, they’re under Simmons’ command and if Helena was spotted near, seeing as he’s tried to hunt her down for nearly a year, I’d expect at least twenty.’’
Her frown and groan faded. He’s right, she thought, but there’s something missing...
