A/N: This wasn’t requested, but it’s probably one of my favorite things I have ever written. It was inspired by the song “I Wish You Would” by Taylor Swift

He was just now driving home from the airport. The flight back from Detroit got delayed for an hour or so, so that meant he got home from the airport later than usual.

It wasn’t until roughly 2 am when Travis got remotely close to his house. Even though he was still a half hour away from his own home, he could feel a sense of familiarity surrounding him. It took him a few minutes to realize that he was in a neighborhood. But not just any old one, it was your neighborhood. After a tough loss or a long flight back like tonight, instead of taking the forty-five-minute drive back to his place, he would take the fifteen minute one and fall asleep at yours. He would do that at least once a week. That is, until the fallout.

The two of you started out as friends. You actually met at the local grocery store. You happened to be reading the giant Philadelphia Flyers advertisement as he walked by. Both of you began talking because of it, and you two bonded over hockey and also moving to a city that was bigger than anything you’ve ever known.

You learned about him and he learned about you. You learned that he was a hockey player for the Philadelphia Flyers – the team you were just starting to get into at the time. He told you he was a winger. You had no idea what that meant. So one afternoon the two of you went out for a late lunch and he taught you all of the basics of hockey, the positions, the players, the coaches and the rules.

You told him about life back home in your hometown. You told him how your move to Philadelphia was practically a spur of the moment decision. You thought it was a pretty city so you bought a house, packed your bags, and left. You told him about your best friend back in your hometown, the one you’ve grown up with since the first grade.

It didn’t just end at the friendship. The two of you started to like each other, but neither one knew. It was during this time that he started inviting you to the rink, whether it be the Skate Zone in Voorhees, or the Wells Fargo Center fifteen minutes away. Yeah, you went to a few Flyers games before Travis began to invite you, but there was something about an invitation and seeing him after the games that made it that much more special.

Eventually, the two of you found out that you liked each other. You’re pretty sure that one of the guys told Travis about your crush on him since one of your friends told you about his on you. How they knew about it? You have no idea, but you’re thankful that they did. When Travis eventually found the balls to ask you out, the way he did it was simple, but sweet. Literally. He had gotten some of your favorite candies and spelled out “will you be mine?” with them. As soon as you saw it on your kitchen table, you couldn’t help but say yes.

The two of you dated for nine months, and needless to say, they were the best nine months of both of your lives. You two together were like any other couple; you would go on impromptu adventures, stay up to help each other with whatever they needed, go on cheesy dates, and more.

But just like a lot of other couples, you two eventually ended it. The argument started off small, something that wasn’t even remotely important to either of you. Unlike your other little disputes that fizzled out, this argument grew and became heated. The fight was horrible. There was screaming “I hate you”, tears streaming down your cheeks. Eventually, the fight got so heated that you just hung up the phone.

Both of you knew the moment that the call ended that you two were over. Tears streamed down your cheeks as you laid there in bed. Travis went for a late night drive. No matter how both of you took your frustration out, there was one thing that was certain: both of you were disappointed, but not surprised that the relationship had ended.

So there Travis was, on your street. When he arrived at your house, he saw your bedroom light on and the memories couldn’t help themselves, they all came flooding back into his mind. He remembered the time he asked you out, the time you two had lunch by the lake, the cute stuff.

He wanted to pull in your driveway like he’s done countless times before. He wanted to knock on your door. He wanted to tell you how much he missed you. Instead of doing that though, he simply drove right past. He thought it was in the past. He thought you hated him.

You were in your room, listening to your favorite artist’s new album that recently dropped. You had given up on sleeping since you only saw the hours go by as you laid in bed trying to fall asleep. As the current song that was playing came to an end, you checked the clock to see that it was two am.

You looked out the window as the next song played to see headlights go by. You couldn’t help but to be reminded about Travis and all the times he’d crash at your house after a long game. He’d either end up on your couch or he would crawl into bed and sleep with you. However, this was not the case. You wish it was Travis so that way he could pull up and you could apologize for hanging up the phone. The headlights continued to be in your window for a little before driving off to wherever the driver was going.

The headlights continued for the next few weeks. Every night that you were up until two am you saw the headlights pass by your house. And every time, you couldn’t help but think of Travis. Travis couldn’t help but to drive by your house.

It had been three weeks since Travis started driving by your house. Every night he drove by, he wanted to stop and tell you how much he wants you back. However, he never did that – until now. Travis had swallowed his pride and finally parked in your driveway. He took a deep breath as he climbed out of his car and walked to your front door.

You were sitting in bed, reading one of your favorite books when you saw the headlights at your window. You checked the clock, and sure enough, it was around two in the morning. You looked out the window, expecting the car to drive by like it normally does. However, the car didn’t drive by. Instead, you watched as it parked in your driveway. Maybe the car was lost? Maybe it was your parents?

You watched as the man climbed out of his car and walked to your front door. He rang the doorbell, and you hesitated. Should you answer it? Probably not. But you had a gut feeling that it was going to be something good.

You walked down the stairs and to your front door. You had no idea that Travis was the one behind the door, so it was a big surprise when you opened it and saw him. Travis on the other hand? He smiled. He was surprised that you actually opened the door.

“Hey,” He said nonchalantly

“Hey,” You responded with a shy smile “You wanna come in?”

He gave you a questioning look “Are you sure.”

You knew you shouldn’t let him in, but you did anyway “Yeah, it’s late and I don’t want you driving home at this time of night.” You let him into your house and to the living room. He sat down on the couch, one of the places he used to sleep when he was over. “Do you want anything to drink?”

Travis shook his head. “I’m good, thank you though. I honestly just wanna talk.”

You furrowed your brows. What could he possibly want to talk about? “What’s up?” You asked

“I’m sorry,” He said, “I’m sorry for the fight.”

You blinked a few times. Was he serious? “Uh what”

“I said I’m sorry, but if you don’t wanna hear my apology then I’ll leave.” He said and started to get up

“No. Stay.” You said as you sat down. He sat back down on the couch. “As you were saying?”

“As I was saying, I’m sorry for the fight. I’m sorry for yelling through the phone and calling you names.” He said

“I’m sorry too.” You said. Your mouth was working faster than your mind. “I’m sorry for fighting back. I’m sorry for hanging up the pho, and I’m sorry for breaking up with you.”

“Can we try again Y/N?” He asked

“We can start as friends, and then we’ll see where that takes us.” You replied and he nodded in response “but for now, you can still stay over at my place whenever you need.”
