I’m currently listening to Maren Uthaug’s book 11% about a world where most men have died. I should probably wait until I’ve finished the book but I’m so fascinated by the world building.

As of now it’s still unclear why the men died but when the story takes place there’s a mix of older women who fucking hates men and young women who have only met drugged up men at “breeding centers” and imagine “males” as violent boogeymen but otherwise don’t really care and just want to live in the new seemingly perfect society their grandmothers fought for. The only people who still fight for men’s rights are witches who believe masculine energies are as natural and Of Nature as feminine energies, but even they sound more like animal rights activists, standing outside breeding centers with signs every Friday. Their most provocative sign is a picture of a man with Human written on it.

Christianity has been completely transformed and is now run by priests (they don’t call themselves priestess) who can only hold ceremonies when they have their periods and snakes are their most sacred symbol because they gave knowledge to Eva and God is called The Mother.

Trans men exist but are referred to as Man Women and they all seem to be sex workers who have functional silicone penises, though I’m not far enough into the story to know if they have other jobs. They generally also still have breasts because working as a wet nurse is another source of income for them. Testosterone treatments is not an option because it would make them too masculine and dangerous to be allowed into society but they all have male names and everyone use male pronouns for them.

A really fascinating aspect of the world is how people want to get rid of the old “patriarchal architecture” of straight lines and boxes but refuse to tear it down with machines, instead insisting on letting Mother Nature reclaim it. Only Rat Girls are actively trying to destroy the old buildings by releasing hoards of rats into them and planting bamboo to break up the concrete. New buildings have round shapes and are build in ways that make them blend in with cultivated nature and inside they’re painting in beautiful colors with no hard edges. They sound a lot like colorful hobbit homes. Also, locks are considered uncivilized and of a time when violent men roamed the earth and made life unsafe so nothing, from front doors to bathrooms, have locks. For a while after most men died women would go for Night Walks to relish in the fact that they no longer had to be afraid, though they liked to visit the witches at night because it felt a little spooky, which the witches thought was good fun.

The story is naturally about a middle aged witch who is hiding a young boy illegally and gets milk from one of the trans men in the red district while also sleeping with a Christian priest who struggles with her sacred job because her periods are irregular.

I’ll come back with follow up thoughts once I’ve finished it. Unlike what you might think, Maren Uthau isn’t a scary man hater. I’ve listened to most of her other books and this isn’t a recurring trope so clearly she has something to say specifically with this story and it’s rated pretty highly by both male and female readers. I think I’m in for quite the ride.

Coup de cœur 🖤🖤

Comme sa mère, son grand-père et sept générations d’hommes avant lui, Nicolas est croque-mort et adore son travail. À présent, l’entreprise familiale est florissante, et alors qu’il s’apprête à faire un voyage avec ses deux enfants, il s’interroge sur sa famille et leurs rapports tous très particuliers à la mort.

Et nous voilà embarqués, à partir du XIXe siècle dans une petite île perdue au milieu de l’océan Pacifique, jusqu’à Copenhague de nos jours. On entre dans ce roman avec horreur, fascination et délectation : Nicolas, notre personnage principal, et celui qui va nous raconter l’histoire de sa famille si particulière, a des penchants un peu (très) morbides, et (très) ennuyants pour un croque-mort — mais je vous laisse découvrir tout ça par vous-mêmes. Quoi qu’il en soit, l’autrice de Là où sont les oiseaux (que j’avais adoré) revient avec une autre famille toujours plus dysfonctionnelle que la précédente, pour notre plus grand plaisir !

J’ai dévoré et adoré Une fin heureuse. J’ai adoré avoir sept histoires de sept Christian Christiansen (et Liliane et Lone Halle et Nicolas) différents et tous plus timbrés les uns que les autres. Parce que chacun.e d’eux avait une relation toute particulière à la mort : Christian III était un pyromane qui s’est battu pour pouvoir incinérer les morts, Christian IV parlait avec les esprits, et ainsi de suite. Je ne vous dis pas tout pour ne pas tout divulgâcher, mais ça vaut le coup d’œil. Dans le genre famille maudite, aussi, ça se place là ! C’est un régal de retrouver Maren Uthaug, pour encore plus de morbide et d’humour noir, et pour découvrir une famille vraiment pas comme les autres. Gros gros coup de cœur pour ce nouveau roman des éditions Gallmeister !

Yeah you're right about that honestly. It wasn't nearly as healthy a relationship as I wanted it to be... I'm currently reading Fall of Giants by Ken Follet (a historical novel about WW1) and 11% by Maren Uthaug (a fictional Danish novel about a futuristic society where men are systematically oppressed instead of women)

Eh bien, mazette !

Quelle sordide histoire. J’ai cette sale manie de finir les livres que je commence, ce qui fait que je suis parfois irritée à la fin, c’est ici le cas. Encore une fois, Gallmeister nous fait le coup de « Betty » (de Tiffany McDaniels) qui a eu un succès invraisemblable pour moi. Une saga familiale, certes, mais qui mêle inceste, viol, maltraitance... là encore, comme pour Betty, le livre semble reposer sur des faits réels (je ne sais dans quelle mesure), ce qui nous force à ne pas totalement hurler sur l’autrice. C’est donc possible de composer une telle famille, il y a un siècle, dans une contrée battue par les vagues et les vents.

Le principal intérêt du livre, et je dois concéder qu’il n’est pas négligeable, c’est sa composition, à trois voix successives : on a la version de Jonah (qui pour moi est un personnage impossible à aimer d’aucune manière), puis celle de Darling, sa fille (la plus attachante, sans doute parce qu’elle commence par être victime de ce couple taré), puis celle de Marie, la mère, moins innocente qu’on le croyait. Tout dysfonctionne. Ce mariage précipité plonge Jonah et Marie dans des abîmes de solitude car chacun en aime un(e) autre. Ils vont rester aveugles l’un à l’autre toute leurs existences. Et se mentir copieusement pour continuer à vivre leurs amours ou leurs pulsions, ou pour cacher leurs secrets inavouables. Le sort réservé aux enfants m’est apparu totalement insupportable : Letten d’abord, Darling ensuite, rejetée au son père et sa mère, puis Valdemar, enfant attardé, mal aimé, bientôt gênant. Beurk.

C’est donc intéressant (tout en étant totalement révoltant) de voir les actions des uns et des autres se révéler au fur et à mesure qu’on change de point de vue. Le puzzle prend forme, mais pour composer un tableau ahurissant, à la Jerome Bosch ; pas étonnant qu’un veau difforme symbolise pour Darling l’aberration de la nature et lui donne des suées froides !

Il faut bien avouer que Maren Uthaug raconte bien les choses. Et donne une idée effrayante du secret imposé sur les familles en raison du qu’en dira-t-on dans la première moitié du XXe siècle. Mais dieu, quelle lecture éprouvante ! L’intérêt sociologique suffit-il à s’infliger une telle lecture ? J’en doute.

Bref, si vous aimez les secrets glauques de famille, les récits de destins féminins bousillés par les hommes, foncez ! Sinon, passez votre chemin. Si vous aimez seulement les phares, ça ne suffira pas.

Three ships:

Isak Valtersen and Even Bech Næsheim / SKAM - their story touched me like no other. It feels so true, even in it soulmates in every universe dimension. They're the reason I got into this whole fandom/fanfiction world. I love them so much.

Rebecca Bunch and Greg Serrano / Crazy Ex Girlfriend - I adore this show, I adore Rebecca and I'm team Greg all the way. Even when he said stop because their relationship wasn't good for him, especially then. And also because of one of the beautiful love declaration ever, simple, no artifice. Right to the feels.

I can't really think of a third one right now that I love as much as these two...

Last song: this is very funny but a bit of a French people inside joke. One of my friends needed a little pick me up, so I sent her the music video of an 80's song called La Bamba triste. It is absolutely ridiculous. Where there drugs involved in the making of this song? Probably. The lyrics are completely absurd and the clip is super kitch. It's hilariously bad 👌🏻

Currently reading: Là où sont les oiseaux (Hvor der er fugle) by Maren Uthaug. It is a Danish/Norwegian book that takes place mainly on the Kjeungskjær lighthouse, guarded by Johan and his family. The book tell their story through 3 pov, Johan's, his daughter Darling and then Marie, the mother. It's really good, powerful but difficult. Not for everyone, some major TWs.

I've also started Marguerite Duras' beautiful essay on writing.

And of course I'm always reading skam fics!

Last movie: Bright Star by Jane Campion that tells the love story between Fanny Brawne and John Keats. What can I even say to describe the beauty of this film? A masterpiece.

Currently watching: I've just finished watching Squid Game, which I really liked up until the final episode. I was very disappointed by it. I found it sort of clumsy and to me, it only felt like an excuse for a potential second season which is something I find quite annoying.

Currently consuming: coffee with almond milk ☕

Currently craving: a cinnamon roll.

I have been trying to cut down on my phone use and trying to read more. Good thing my mom was like “ why not combine?”

“A happy ending” is Maren Uthaugs 3. novel. Published in 2019 in Denmark, the EU litterateur prise normittied novel tells the story of a 8 generation of funerals directors. The story is told through Nikolas the only one male in the family who hasn’t been given the traditional name (Christian).

That is not the only thing about him. Nik has also some tendencies involving the dead. And he is not the only one in the family who has a weird connection to the dead. Christian 2 made the family business on a foundation of superstition and traditional aboriginal traditions (he is half danish and aboriginal) Christian 4 is a medium. Another is a pyromaniac. And that is the only the top of the iceberg of weird tendencies and abilities the family deals with.

This story is really macabre and will turn stomachs. However Marens writing is made so the blows is both equal soft and hard. Her style also makes the macabre sometimes extremely funny because it can be so blunt from time to time. The character of Nikolas , while sometimes you wanna punch him, is written to in such a way you feel sympathetic for him.

10/10 would recommend this for those with dark humour and a strong stomach.

Petit bilan de lecture 2023

Je vois beaucoup de bilans lectures fleurir sur les réseaux sociaux en ce moment, et j’en rajoute un sur le tas !

Le moins que l’on puisse dire, c’est que 2023 a été riche en émotions et en lectures… Je m’étais fixée un objectif de lire 120 livres (romans, BD, mangas et albums jeunesse), 100 sans les albums, et j’ai réussi et je suis fière de moi 💪🏻 J’ai lu pas moins de 192 livres ! (Et 129 sans les albums.) Je m’étais aussi dit que j’essayerai de baisser ma PAL (sans commentaire mdr) ou à défaut d’en sortir des vieux titres présents depuis déjà quelques années (j’en ai sorti quelques-uns, c’est déjà ça). Je sais qu’un objectif de 120 livres c’est énorme, qu’en avoir lu 192 c’est énorme, que ça angoisse beaucoup de personnes, mais retenez bien que je ne fais que ça dès que j’ai un moment de libre. Je suis une personne renfermée et angoissée, je n’aime pas sortir, pour moi le meilleur moment c’est une après-midi avec mon chéri et mon livre. Donc : oui, j’ai lu énormément, mais j’ai aussi un rythme de lecture hyper rapide, et je ne fais que ça.

Cette année, je me suis aussi lancée (un peu) dans le BookTube game, et sur BookTok (un peu moins). J’ai aussi découvert la romance, et en fait j’aime bien 🤭 J’ai lu plein de romans trop cool, qui m’ont retournée et percutée, auxquels je pense encore plusieurs mois après — et c’est vraiment satisfaisant !

J’ai eu une année compliquée, surtout au niveau du travail : j’adore toujours autant ce que je fais, mais j’ai eu des moments vraiment pas marrants et des gros bouleversements qui m’ont beaucoup angoissée. Résultat, je râle et je suis frustrée… pour 2024, je me souhaite de retrouver plus de plaisir en librairie !

J’aime bien me mettre des objectifs / des vœux, donc j’aimerais lire 150 livres l’année prochaine (romans, bulles et albums compris), et puis si je n’y arrive pas c’est pas grave. Mais surtout, j’aimerais essayer de lire plus de livres pour moi, parce que lire un max pour le boulot c’est bien, mais en attendant ma PAL est en souffrance et moi je suis frustrée. Et peut-être continuer à découvrir la romance ? Et essayer de me mettre moins la pression. Ici, professionnellement, partout.

Jeg har en dejlig familie. Selvom jeg har lyst til at slå dem ned 70% af tiden, har jeg en bror, som er sød, kærlig og menneskelig. Han er ikke klassisk drengebøv, selvom han kan være distræt som bare fanden. Men han er reflekterende, intelligent og burde have en meget bedre søster end mig. Manja er jeg aldrig enig med. Hun er storesøster og evigt perfekt, men også menneskelig og ind i mellem er hun også bare en ung kvinde, der hader sig selv, og forsøger at finde en hylde, hvor hun hører til. Jeg bliver ikke enig i hendes valg, men jeg kan ikke bestemme over hendes liv, men bare grine med hende, når det brænder på. Min far elsker mig. Som når jeg ikke kan nå at få burger King og han bestiller og løber fra butikken og tværs gennem toget, så jeg når at få mad med på min tre-timers togtur. Han reflekterer og jeg kan altid tale med ham om livet, og han forstår ikke altid hvorfor jeg ikke kan være sårbar overfor ham, men han respekterer det. Og selvom jeg ind i mellem synes han er påståelig, så er han den bedste far. Han er ham, det flytter bilen, når parkeringen udløber og ham der ikke brokker sig. Han er fantastisk Mor er stædig og kontant og alle de ting jeg også er. Hun er grineflip og Maren Uthaug og vrede, når man opfører sig dumt. Hun er dybe samtaler om sociologiske mekanismer i samfundet og andres forventninger og leder, og jeg elsker hende, selvom jeg ind i mellem glemmer det.
