Bajirao Mastani (2015),India film. Costume Design by Maxima Basu & Ajay Kmr & Anju Modi & Chandrakant Sonawane.
Analyse: Although I have never studied Indian clothing, Indian women's saris are very attractive to me! So I will also enjoy the beautiful clothes of women in Indian movies! And this movie not only looks good in women's clothes, but also in men's clothes! On the contrary, I prefer the men's clothes in this movie.😁

Film Review Laal Kaptaan
Tumblr media
By Neha Bora
Most films in Bollywood are a retelling of previous stories and this might not always be a bad thing except when you aren’t able to tell it well, like in ‘Laal Kaptaan’. Keep on reading the article till the end film review laal kaptaan to know whether filmi files give this movie yay or nay.
‘Laal Kaptaan’ is set in pre-independent India in Bundelkhand. It is the story of one Naga Sadhu referred to as ‘Gossain’ throughout the film, who is an assassin/bounty hunter in the quest of revenge on a mysterious man for a mysterious reason.
The story is so stretched out that despite the great number of beautifully shot fight sequences, a magical ‘Calypso’ reminiscent witch and her prophecy, and the philosophical musings of a deep voiced Sadhu, one wonders what the story wants to get at and if ever it will get there. The basic storyline is simple, and the characters are written beautifully but the thread connecting these vast themes is very fragile almost frayed in several places.
Writers Deepak Venkatesha and Navdeep Singh leave a lot of characters in the film unnamed, we walk out of the cinema hall without finding out what they were called and this initially adds to the intrigue only to become obsolete later on. Another very beautiful aspect of the film is how it treats time. One not only does it talk about the vastness of time and a human beings’ short duration in it, it also conveys time as such in the story.
You are convinced that such a time and space existed surrounding such a man as played by Saif Ali Khan. The story has the element of the Indian Struggle against the British. It also has the deals with the macabre with ideas of ‘kaal’ and its ‘bhainsa’ prevalent throughout the story yet, these are tropes that could not be used effectively.
The support of the cinematography, sound, color and design is spot-on. There is nothing half done or hastily put together in it. The great barren lands and rocky paths of Bundelkhand are set against the colors of dirt, blood and ash. They are fore grounded by the haunting music and background score.
You can feel the strength of Gossain’s wrath with every beat of ‘kaal kaal’, the manic dance of Khan and Dobriyal is well set against a burning pyre as ‘Taandav’ plays on. The rest of the soundtrack is essentially haunting and angry but it isn’t a soundtrack that will give you goosebumps.
The film relied too much on the intrigue that surrounds Sadhus, it tried to exploit the ‘chillum’, the ‘ash’, the ‘dreadlocks’ without actually committing to the idea and instead made Saif Ali Khan only a tokenistic Sadhu. Death is often spoken of without there being any exploration of death or mortality.
Saif’s character does not manage to become the ‘Yamaraj’ that the trailer promised us. He is, in fact, only a Sadhu because making him a common soldier in search of revenge, would take away the aesthetics of the films that is the major or only reason for the audiences to go to the theatre.
The costumes and make-up become an essential part of any period drama and therefore it was essential that the costumes of the characters also convey the time and mood of the film. Maxima Basu does a wonderful job of this in the film. Gossain is Gossain partly because he looks like Gossain. The wrath of the Sadhu are almost wrapped into the folds of his red turban. Deepak Dobriyal character could not have been given a better costume, right from his cloth laden shoes, to his three cornered hat, he looks every bit as queer as his character demanded. Zoya Hussain is left barren and dark as the life she leads.
To talk about ‘Laal Kaptaan’ without talking about the phenomenal acting performances would be ignoring the one element that worked in favor of the film. Saif Ali Khan was said to have worked very hard for the film and this hard work showed. He was brooding, angry and patient as and when required. He spends almost the entire film covered in dirt and ash and paint and doesn’t seem t flinch away from these aspects of his character once.
Deepak Dobriyal brings comedy into the stationary mode of the film without breaking character and he is very convincing as the sniffer human who lives with his two dogs, picks up horse dung and apes the ‘how do do!’ of the British people. I find it hard to believe that anyone else could have done it better. Zoya Hussain portrays the lost and intelligent woman well but appears single-toned throughout the length of the film.
Manav Vij doesn’t work in either portraying the inhuman or portraying the angry. He seems to sulk and Simone Singh playing his rebellious wife seems to have the upper hand in the chemistry and marriage. Aamir Bashir is just about there without doing much for the film. Filmi Files is the best place to check out the latest tinsel town happenings.
Go watch this film to find out how trailers can be better than full deal!

Raazi Review – Bollywood Hungama
In the past few years, Bollywood has churned out some very exciting spy films like AGENT VINOD [2012], PHANTOM [2015], BABY [2015], BANG BANG [2014], EK THA TIGER [2012], TIGER ZINDA HAI [2017], D-DAY [2013] etc. Most of these films also had the role of a female spy who looked like she meant business and would easily kick ass. Katrina Kaif’s portrayal in the TIGER series is the most apt example. But imagine a spy who’s completely feminine replete with long, flowy hair and salwar kurtas et al. Anil Sharma did slightly touch upon this aspect in 2003 with his biggie THE HERO: LOVE STORY OF A SPY. Now Meghna Gulzar attempts to make a complete film on this aspect with RAAZI. So does it manage to engross viewers like the other spy films? Or does it fail in its endeavour? Let’s analyse.
RAAZI is the story of a young girl from India sent to Pakistan as an undercover agent. The year is 1971. Pakistan is all set to make a surprise attack on India and the Indian intelligence is trying it’s best to get the details. Hidayat (Rajit Kapur) lives in Srinagar and travels to Pakistan for business. He is a part of the Indian intelligence but has convinced Pakistani Brigadier Syed (Shishir Sharma) that he works for them. Hidayat is terminally ill and he asks Syed if he can get his daughter Sehmat (Alia Bhatt) married to Syed’s younger son Iqbal (Vicky Kaushal). Syed agrees and surprisingly, Sehmat also gives her nod. Sehmat is obviously being married to Iqbal to spy in the house of Syeds and she gets adequate training from Khalid Mir (Jaideep Ahlawat) from Indian intelligence. Sehmat gets married and she gradually gets attached to Iqbal, who gives her the space and doesn’t force himself on her. Meanwhile Sehmat begins her surveillance and finds out crucial information regarding naval attacks planned by Pakistan against India. However the challenges faced by Sehmat are immense and one wrong move can prove fatal for her. What happens next forms the rest of the story.
RAAZI is based on Harinder S Sikka’s novel ‘Calling Sehmat’. The story is novel and stands out from the rest of the spy films as the lead character goes to any lengths, morals be damned. And this bit comes across very nicely. Bhavani Iyer and Meghna Gulzar’s screenplay is a mixed bag. In most scenes, it’s simplistic and engrossing.
RAAZI doesn’t commence on a high note but grips viewers well. The characters are well established and Sehmat agreeing for the dangerous mission could have come across as not so believable. But thankfully that doesn’t happen. Her training sequence is interesting but the film gets better once she moves to Pakistan. Though the film drops for a while, it picks up brilliantly in the intermission point when Sehmat drives the jeep. Arguably it’s the best part of the film. Post interval, the film has some engaging moments but at the same time, the film begins to slow down. There should have been a more gripping cat and mouse chase game but that never really happens. The manner in which Sehmat is able to escape suspicion most of the times is very unconvincing. The finale however makes up for the minuses to an extent. Some of the scenes however gets complicated. For instance, some of the details provided by Khalid during Sehmat’s training is difficult to process as it is presented too quickly. Also the interest drops in some scenes. Meghna Gulzar’s dialogues are simple and neat and are very craftily written. Meghna Gulzar’s direction is impressive. Despite the content being niche, she tries to tell the story in a commercial format. She does falter at places but overall, manages to do justice to the plot.
Alia Bhatt delivers a powerhouse performance and this is surely one of her most accomplished works. Her character is living a double life and she brings out this aspect very nicely. In the emotional and breakdown sequences, she shines! Vicky Kaushal has a limited screen time but he leaves a mark. His character is sure to be loved. Rajit Kapur is quite endearing. Jaideep Ahlawat is very good. This talented actor deserves to be seen more in movies. Shishir Sharma is quite dependable. Notice how endearing he looks when he’s interacting with Sehmat but transforms in another avatar altogether when he’s talking business. Amruta Khanvilkar (Munira) is lovely. Arif Zakaria (Abdul) plays a dynamic role with panache. Ashwath Bhatt (Mehboob) has a small role but is effective. Soni Razdan (Teji) is okay. Other actors do a good job.
Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy’s music is melodious but won’t be remembered, except for ‘Ae Watan’. The song has an anthem like feel and can get a longer shelf life if it’s played during Independence and Republic Day celebrations in the country. The title track gets noticed while ‘Dilbaro’ is completely relegated to the background.
Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy and Tubby’s background score is quite exhilarating. Jay I Patel’s cinematography works big time. The exterior shots of Kashmir are simply breathtaking. Nitin Baid’s editing is nice but should have been more razor sharp. Subrata Chakraborty and Amit Ray’s production design is very authentic. Maxima Basu Golani’s costumes are appealing. Harpal Singh’s action is subtle and not very detailed.
On the whole, RAAZI is an interesting thriller brilliantly narrated by Meghna Gulzar that makes for mature viewing. It is a film that celebrates nationalism that is devoid of the colors of religion. At the box office, it has the potential to grow with positive word of mouth and keep its makers happy.

Sahid Kapoor’s determined patriotism as the Rajput ruler Ratan Singh and Ranveer Singh‘s extravagant aggression as Alauddin Khiljiin ‘Padmavati’ have gotten a fitting support from the handiwork of two Delhi based leather accessory designers. Harsheen Arora, a psychologist by profession, and Vipul Amar, a businessman and an amateur photographer, have designed the armour for the two actors in the film. Talking about how they got involved in the project, Harsheen says, “We, sort of, developed an expertise in leather work and that is what got us noticed. Costume designer Maxima Basu contacted us saying Mr Bhansali was looking for someone to make leather battle armour for the two male leads in Padmavati.” Before ‘Padmavati’, they had also worked on some leather costumes in ‘Raabta’. ‘Wanted to portray the characters’ personality through the armour’ Harsheen says, “We have two characters that are both warriors but completely different from one another. Ratan Singh is an embodiment of love and patriotism, while Khilji personifies conquest and invasion. So, the armour they wear have to be different too. In Shahid’s armour, the blood red depicts honour, love, and eagerness to serve one’s land and the deep gold stands for courage, generosity and passion. In fact, the design elements in the armour are inspired by the sun’s rays, while the colours of the chest-plate are taken from the colours of the desert at different times of the day – both important aspects of Rajputana.” Khilji’s armour is more extravagant, given the character is shown to be more self-obsessed, and it also features darker elements than Ratan Singh’s character. Vipul tells us, “The leather lions on his shoulders show his strong-headedness. But since lions are associated with a sort of noble valour and we wanted to portray darkness, we engraved the lion heads with crocodile scales, giving them a dark, reptilian feel. This was done to bring out Khilji’s ferocity.” Shahid Kapoor as Ratan Singh in ‘Padmavati’ ‘Used only historical techniques’ The duo used techniques that were used in that era to treat the leather and did not adopt any modern technology. Vipul explains, “We did a thorough research on the armoury and weaponry of that era. We used actual historical techniques to create the armour such as cuir boilli technique, chiselling, inlaying, while making sure they align with today’s standards of comfort and weightlessness. We even used the needles of the same size that were used in the 13th century for stitching.” It took Vipul and Harsheen, along with a team of 40 workers and assistants, eight months to complete the work.  ‘Despite the visual appeal, had to make the armour functional’ Apart from getting the look right, they also had to make them functional and comfortable enough for the actors to shoot in the desert. Harsheen says, “Ranveer’s armour has 14000 separate parts and they all have to come together to make it not just look great on screen but be functional too. That was our challenge, to make something that is as visually grand as Mr Bhansali’s vision and yet be comfortable for the actors to wear. When Ranveer asked us how heavy it was, we told him it was just 7.5kg, and he laughed and said, ‘It is lighter than Deepika’s lehenga!'” In order to get the functionality right, they consulted an engineer, who advised them on how to get the ‘robotics’ correct so that the actors can move about and perform stunts in the armour. They even created special wheeled cabinets to house and transport the armour from their studio to the sets, something that later came in handy when vandals set fire to the film’s set in Kolhapur in March. “We wanted the armour to be mobile and protected so we put them in cabinets with wheels. And since they were easily movable, they were the only pieces to survive the fire,” informs Vipul. The Times  of  India : 25th. Oct,17

Sushant Singh Rajput’s Raabta might not have done well at the box office but his warrior look in the film got a lot of attention. From his tattoos to his killer braids, he actually looked the part of someone from a different era. We know that a lot of effort goes into curating a period drama look and in this case it won’t be an exaggeration to say that the actor’s costumes were almost at par with costumes of the hot favourite drama series Game of Thrones.
Designer duo Vipul Amar and Harsheen K Arora from The V Renaissance are the source behind it and they custom-created this look to ensure that the ethos of the character and the story was translated into a visual experience.
Each piece has been created without a single seam.
Harsheen Arora in a statement said how it required a lot of hard work on their part. He said, “The film has had extensive research go into it, with the sets, the costumes and looks all specifically designed to recreate an era gone by in an ultra-realistic fashion. In fact, costume designer Maxima Basu specifically sought out and worked with us. The aesthetics, the fluidity of motion and an intense focus on details which are the hallmarks of our brand became integral to the curation.”
The detailing on the armour is extensive and intrinsic, so much so, that you can actually see the exquisite leather smithing on it.

According to Vipul Amar, each piece was crafted keeping in mind the fluidity of motion and the threats of natural elements that the character would have had to go through. He said, “Each piece has been created without a single seam because we realised that the character would not have had the luxury of threads or needles given the starkness of the terrain and the sheer rawness of the era.”
