Too Sweet
Nero and Vergil bond over stroopwafels. That's it, that's the plot.
Slice of life, Dadgil, humour to glue it together, I just want them to end up happy, okay?
Tumblr media
---------------
"So what's new?"
Nero leaned back. This was nice. A Sunday morning off the job in Redgrave, a pre-booked spot on the ferry meaning he and Nico were stuck hanging around with nothing to do. No shopping that Kyrie or the kids needed picking up and bringing back from the mainland - he triple checked that - and a decent paycheck sat in his inside coat pocket. Time for a little R & R.
Vergil picked up his small packet of biscuits. "Nothing significant. A few demon-hunting assignments but nothing of lasting importance. A long evening yesterday spent in a bar with Dante-"
"Hence the caffeine and caramel treats this morning. Gotcha."
Vergil leaned toward Nero. "Unlike that fool, I know how to conduct myself in public. Especially when the beer is terrible."
Nero smirked, shaking his head and his two sugar packets, dumping them in his coffee. Vergil had leaned back, attention back on his allocated sugar and caffeine, hoping it would get rid of the last niggly bit of headache (or at least the taste of said beer still hanging around after brushing his teeth three times). What was that stuff made of anyway?
"Whatever you say, just surprised to see you on the hard stuff this morning instead of your tea."
With that, Nero shoved the caramel waffle in his mouth and took a huge bite, leaving a thin crescent moon shape behind. Vergil's turn to smirk... for someone who had just been teasing him the child was quite endearing. Vergil filed away Nero's preference for caramel for later use as he carefully balanced a waffle on top of his steaming coffee.
Nero chomped his way through the rest of the biscuit and took a huge gulp of still-too-hot coffee. Damn but if the demonic heritage didn't come in handy sometimes, not least with his impatience with hot drinks (and his love of all things spicy). He placed his mug down on the table and noticed Vergil's precariously hanging waffle but decided not to mention it. After all, he already got away with a bit of cheek, he didn't want to go too far. Vergil could get kind of defensive and sulk if any of the gang drew attention to his many little quirks or habits. But they made his father less of an idea and more of a real person - so Nero liked them (mostly).
"... out in the suburbs?"
Nero blinked. "Uhhh?"
Vergil raised an eyebrow. "It looks like I'm not the only one requiring caffeine this morning. I was enquiring how your assignment proceeded. It was located in the suburbs, yes?"
"Ah. The job. Right. Yeah, it was fine." Smooth, Nero cursed.
Vergil nodded and turned his attention downward again. Excellent way to end the conversation you fool, he cursed himself. He knew exactly where the job was located and what it entailed, he and Dante having turned it down a few days ago with the express promise from Morrison that it would be offered to Nero and brought back to them if necessary. Which brought a hearty and knowing chuckle from Morrison and (unfortunately) a hug-tackle from his brother. At least the fool waited until the broker had gone - perhaps he can exhibit survival skills on occasion. What has it Dante had said while Vergil had him in a head-lock? Sharing is caring, Mr. Poetry.
Vergil picked up the waffle from the top of his mug and pulled the biscuit into two halves, strands of warm gooey caramel trailing between them longer than Vergil thought possible. He took a bite and closed his eyes for a moment as the soft waffle gave way to sweet caramel. Such a small but joyful moment. He opened his eyes and as they focused he became aware of Nero's mug hovering halfway between the table and his mouth. A mouth hanging open as Nero stared.
Their eyes met. Vergil panicked. What does he say? Does he say anything? What did he do? He swallowed, the sugar hitting and burning his throat with the sweetness. How embarrassing to be caught so off guard. He will not blush, he is a mighty son of Sparda, he will not blush. Nero still hadn't moved. Should he trick himself out of the room and run away screaming?
He swallowed.
"... not all of my ideas are terrible, Nero."
A heartbeat passed and Nero still didn't move. Then he let out a snort and a laugh, the coffee returned to the table. Thank Sparda for self-deprecating humour, Vergil thought. He took a sip of his own beverage. A small victory.
"It definitely makes your top ten, old man."
"Most regrettably, I can't take the credit. I merely observed others eating them this way during my travels and approved."
"The approval of a son of Sparda? They must have been so honoured."
There it was again, such cheek. Vergil smiled.
Nico slammed her drink onto the table and whirled into her seat with all the delicacy of a hurricane. Nero and Vergil stared at the huge multi-coloured monstrosity of a frappé. Vergil was the first the speak. "What on earth is that?"
Nico took a huge draw from the straw, making a noise Vergil swore he hadn't heard since the depths of hell. He didn't understand the babble of words that assaulted his still-sensitive ears, recognising only a few such as "Instagram recipe", "custom" and "improved".
"It took that long to make something that gross," Nero deadpanned.
"Stop bitchin', you know those drinks don't actually exist so that's why it took this long. Can't rush art."
Nero opened his mouth to speak again, so Nico beat him to it. "Having a nice catch up with your daddy?" she asked, all faux innocence as she swiped Vergil's second stroopwafel. Vergil smiled (internally) and let it happen. This was nice.
---------------
Thanks for reading, I hope you enjoyed it! We all know DMC likes its parallels, and drawing imaginary parallels between Vergil and Nero is one of my favourite hobbies.
P.S. Try the stroopwafels, they're delicious!

Task 005: The Hart of the Matter
The Hart of the Matter, Reina had heard of the show but she had never seen an entire episode. The extent of her exposure to the show were the clips that would randomly, and rarely, appear on her Tik Tok and even then she would scrolled past them 99% of the time. She had no intention of participating in the interviews that would be conducted and yet here she was, letting someone fuss around her to get the mic attached. She went to take a sip of her coffee but it was quickly taken away.
"You'll smudge your makeup." The woman said and set down the coffee cup on a nearby table. "Two minutes till places." She said checking her watch and then quickly leaving to wherever she was needed next.
The mic was attached and working, her hair - down in loose curls -and makeup - light and natural - was looked over once more and then she was led to the stage. There were bright lights, murmurs from the audience, and a hustle and bustle from the crew - the environment felt chaotic.
Tumblr media
"Ms. Azarolla," Dr. Hart flashed what she assumed was his signature charming smile as she rook the seat beside him. A smile that she could tell was completely fake.
Reina returned the smile. "Dr. Hart," she nodded after sitting down and smoothing out her top. She was wearing black skinny jeans with ankle boots and a nice pastel pink blouse with a dainty gold layered necklace, one chain have a small sun charm and the other having a crescent moon charm. She had a black leather jacket too but they told her she couldn't wear it.
The audience started to quiet down and from somewhere behind the cameras a woman - the one that had taken Reina's coffee away - counted down. The red lights on the cameras turned on and immediately Donovan Hart started the interview.
“It’s a tough year to be a student at Ogden College with the tragic passing of Penelope Klein. And of course, we can’t forget the ongoing missing persons case surrounding beloved student, Greer Morrison. I know that Dean Zuko insisted on free on-campus counseling set up for all students. Have you made use of it?”
If her father taught her one thing it was to keep her composure at all times. That all actions and words should be done with intent. With this being recorded and the show having the power to edit this however they want to, she knew she would need to be extra careful with her words. Yet seeing Dr. Hart there was something she sensed that she just did not like, she almost just wanted to make this interview difficult for him. It was an urge she'd have to try to fight, for now.
"I was unaware of the free on-campus counseling. I may just have to look into that and thank Dean Zuko for giving his students and staff this resource for free." There was a short pause, she thought that answer would suffice but then she opened her mouth again. "And I'll have to thank him for hosting such a prominent psychiatrist the next time I see him. I'm sure he intends these interviews to be cathartic for us." The brunette tilted her head to the side slightly and smiled. Sarcasm hid beneath her tone but she was sure the wise doctor would pick up on it.
It was no surprise to her that he simply moved on to the next question.
“There was that nasty storm that knocked out the power at the resort, I remember. That got a little dicey, huh? Parents and staff all congregated in the faculty chalet, but you kids were on the other side of the resort. We’ve been told that Penelope organized some things for people to complete to make it through that night together. Were you one of them? What did you get up to during the blackout?”
Ah, one of the reasons why she didn't want to do this interview. She wasn't there when Penelope met her untimely death. She only experienced it through other's re-telling of that night and even then she knew she didn't have the whole story. "I was not at the ski resort. I was studying abroad last semester. As one of the parents there, wouldn't you have known that I was not?" She raised a brow.
Dr. Hart cleared his throat and moved on to the next question.
“In the wake of tragedy, it can be hard to recall things in detail. The brain has its own ways of protecting itself in high-stress situations, and I know that the police have been a near-constant presence on campus this year. This is not that; I want you to feel safe and comfortable enough to share whatever you want about that night. Did you see anything? Hear anything?”
There was a flash of something in Dr. Hart's eyes, as if he knew he should have not asked the question as soon as he had said it.
"May I ask you a question Dr. Hart?" Reina crossed her right leg over her left and leaned on the side of the chair that was closer to him. She didn't really wait for him to answer before continuing. "What number interview am I?" A short pause but again not one long enough for him to answer.
"I know I was not the intended interviewee, I mean I'm pretty sure it was an intern that ambushed me when I was leaving Rumi Cafe asking if I had time to come do a quick interview." Reina had told this person she did not in fact have time. She was heading back to her dorm to study. Who's bright idea was it to host right before midterms. The intern was not taking no as an answer, they seemed desperate, how many people had they approached before Reina.
"It just seems like you're going through the motions, reading those cue cards of yours." She shrugged a shoulder. "And not really listening. Which, as a psychiatrist, if a patient feels like they aren't being listened to does that create a safe environment?" Reina sighed. Again, I was not at the ski resort. I was studying abroad last semester. I did not see anything and what I've heard about that trip are just bits and pieces. Nothing I'd want to repeat, I wouldn't want to relay the wrong information."
Dr. Hart cleared his throat again and flipped through his cards before finding a question that was not entirely related to ones experience at the ski resort.
“Now, if you’ll direct your attention to this screen here, I have something that— barring appropriate authorities— no one has seen until now.” A picture of Greer suddenly appears on screen, all eyes trained on this new piece of information. All eyes but Donovan’s which are locked onto the face of the person he’s interviewing, watching for any and every reaction. “This photo is shocking, I know. It was found in the faculty chalet the night of the blackout. Do you know anything about the day it was taken or who might have taken it?”
Reina looked at the photo, her mouth fell open slightly. Donovan's voice sounded muffled, she was no longer present in the interview. Many thoughts began to enter her mind but the loudest one was once again her father every action and word must be done with intent.
Her eyes glistened as they began to fill with tears threatening to fall. She shook her head and grabbed a tissue from the box of tissues that suddenly appeared on the table beside her. She fiddled with it in her hands, only having it ready for if, or when, the tears begin to fall. "It looks like it could have been taken while on vacation, or maybe on some sort of bus. I don't know." A tear fell and she wiped it away once it was about half way down her cheek.
"You said that was found in the faculty chalet? Why would it be there? Have you asked any of the staff or parents about this yet?"
This was not a two way interview, Dr. Hart simply moved on.
“Do you have any idea why this photo might have been left with faculty that night? Or, most pressing, what reason someone could have for vandalizing it in such a horrible way?”
"What do you mean left with faculty? How do you know it wasn't already in possession of the faculty?" Her eyes still glistened and she took a deep breath to fight back the tears. Reina knew there were bound to be some creeps in Greer's life, but they were harmless. At least she thought they were harmless.
Again Dr. Hart ignored her questions.
“Finally, it’s been discovered that Penelope, shortly before her untimely death, had mentioned to someone that she knew why Greer had left. Do you think that has anything to do with this photo? Do you know why she might have left? Even though being honest about it may seem scary, I promise you, it’s the right thing to do. It’s the only way we can protect you.”
"Oh come on Dr. Hart." Now Reina was getting angry. She balled up the tissue in her fist, tears no longer threatened to fall. "Who is going to protect me, and everyone else. If you have a plan on how you can guarantee our safety then I'm all ears. But aren't you are only here for the weekend to get the inside scoop and monetize on the suffering these students have gone through." She took a steady deep breath.
"To answer your questions. I do not know why she left. I would think the photo has something to do with it, but I can't say for sure. It's just, why would someone leave it where it could be so easily found?" She shook her head. "I have nothing more to say to you except instead of worrying about all of us and making promises you can't keep, why not focus on your son that is also a student here. Have you recorded his interview yet? I'm sure a father son interview would drive your ratings through the roof."
Dr. Hart gave a look to his crew. The cameras turned off, the audience began to murmur again and the crew started get ready for the next student. Reina was directed off the make shift stage. Her mic was removed and she was left to gather her things. She put her jacket on, grabbed her bag and grabbed her coffee that was now cold and left.

{ LILY-ROSE DEPP, 21, CISFEMALE, SHE/HER } Is that CARA MORRISON ? A SOPHOMORE originally from MANHATTAN, they decided to come to Ogden College to study MARKETING. They’re THE UNFAVORITE on campus, but even they could get blamed for Greer’s disappearance.
Tumblr media
THE ESSENTIALS
cara is the bratty younger sister of greer, always living in her shadow and constantly feeling like she will never be able to live up to her - for good reason, though !! she won't !! she simultaneously tries her absolute hardest to be a good girl to get her parents approval, while failing time after time at that, acts out in every possible way she can think of. and through it all ?? her parents still mostly ignore her. there's one thing cara won't do, though - and that's let herself get caught. because at the end of the day, the morrison's public image is the most important thing, and even cara - the unfavorite that she is - knows that.
pinterest - muse tag
CHARACTER INSPIRATIONS
venetia catton (saltburn) - jocelyn (the idol) - alexis rose (schitt's creek) - danika fendyr (crescent city series) - serena van der woodsen (gossip girl) - jordan baker (the great gatsby) - nesta archeron (acosf) - marissa cooper (the oc) - rachel gattina (one tree hill)

HOW THEY EMBODY THEIR TROPE:
It goes without saying that Cara, feeling as though she was unable to live up to Greer, felt a huge amount of pressure from her parents and her brother. She was well aware that she was the least favorite, the least wanted, the least cherished child. After all, they had Greer - the girl golden in every way you would want her to be. And then, when their parents had another child, they had their son, a golden boy to complete the pair with Greer. The only downside being that he was a twin - and Cara was thus destined to always be second daughter to Greer, and the second twin to her brother. She didn't fulfill any purpose, and no matter how hard she tried, she could never shine as brightly as her siblings. At least not as far as her parents were concerned.
EXPANDED PERSONALITY:
tbd
CONNECTION IDEAS
some wanted dynamics -
hook-ups, party friends, drug friends, people she just is naughty with
people who have used her for a connection to greer - be it to get closer to the golden girl or to get some dirt on her
exes !! always exes !! the most exes !!
maybe people she's gotten close to know that greer is gone ?? who used to be closer with greer ??
friends !! at least one singular friend !! who gets to see more of the real cara rather than the facade of the unbothered younger sibling she tries so hard to maintain
more tbd !!!
RELATIONSHIP WITH GREER:
Cara is Greer’s younger sister, but that goes without saying. Everywhere she went, people seemed to know Greer first. It didn’t matter how far Cara tried to strike out on her own, she was always ‘the younger Morrison’ or ‘Greer’s little sister’. She never seemed to be able to fully forge her own identity. And even when she did try to do something Greer didn’t, the comparisons were there. They were always there. Cara hated it. And as she grew up, and people continued to pit the two sisters against each other - and while Cara’s twin seemingly took Greer’s side over and over again - that grew into hatred for Greer. However, if there was one thing Cara was aware of even more than the ways she failed to measure up to her eldest sister, it was public appearances. When she was younger, she often acted out, ending up in tears and tantrums when she didn’t get what she wanted. Her parents would reprimand her, scolding her and sending her to her room, and it didn’t help that Greer, the perfect, golden Greer, never seemed to have a hair out of place in public. The tears, the feet stomping, the misbehavior only highlighted the contrast between the two sisters. Even when Greer started it - which, in Cara’s opinion, it always seemed she did, she was the one who ended up looking unaffected, while Cara ended up losing it. So as she grew older, she honed her skills to put on a facade, appearing as if she was unbothered, while internally, her pain from never living up to Greer just continued to fester, building upon the resentment.
FAMILY
FULL FAMILY PAGE TBD
SOCIAL CLASS: very very very upper class
FATHER:
MOTHER:
SIBLING(S)? two - elder sister (the golden girl), greer morrison and a twin brother (the proud elite) - luke
ABOUT CARA
FULL BIOGRAPHY TBD
cara has spent her entire life trying to live up to greer (typically unsuccessfully), the competition between the sisters set up from the very moment that she was born
growing up, she used to throw tantrums constantly (very typical youngest child behavior, lbr). whenever something wasn't going her way - which was frequently - she would have a breakdown, screaming, crying, throwing things. it only further distanced her from her parents, because it showed how ill prepared she was to represent the morrison name and all that it entails
as a result, cara has often tried to keep her emotions down, learning that her reactions were "not appropriate" and tends to shove things deep inside until they overflow and burst out - making the outbursts worse
however, she is quite skilled at keeping a facade up, a party girl who - while not unbothered (she'll never achieve that) - doesn't give too much of a damn, leaning into being the black sheep in comparison to the golden girl greer, and plenty of people - especially those who are not close to the family, or did not grow up with the morrison's - probably assume that cara is fine with that.
now, she tries to straddle the line between the rich girl who couldn't care less and then actually working hard for a career and impress her parents with her motivation and talent - since they're such opposites, though, she's sorta just bad at them both and can never actually fully achieve either !!!
SOME FUN FACTS
she almost always has a cigarette in hand (yuck tbh !!!)
cara is the type to completely overload her plate, not actually finish anything, get completely overwhelmed and then have a complete meltdown
she has a unrelenting inferiority complex, obviously, and will backstab whoever to feel like she can win, since she never managed to pull it off against greer - hooking up with friend's partners, taking credit for people's work, blaming other people for shitty things she's done, etc etc
can and will cry on command - but can't stop herself from crying, so she does both quiet frequently
MORE TBD
FALL SEMESTER TOUCHBASE
cara received a letter from greer in september - she did not tell the cops (or likely anyone else) about it.

Watching the ACTUAL first episode of the battle frontier arc: Advanced Battle ep. 40, The Scheme Team
Turns out the first episode of the battle frontier season is when we're already in the battle frontier arc and have been for a while at this point. Oh, AG and its interesting decisions. Anyways, here's my thoughts on the technical episode one, of it and not fear factor phony.
First, bye Morrison and Tyson, I never think of you guys ever. We're headed to Oldale town where the heroes split up temporarily, will toss thoughts here as they occur to me.
Also, jelly filled donut sighting.
Tumblr media
I love how max has gone from "you were top 16 or whatever in the silver league conference!" to "I'll tell dad you should have been champion". Very sweet.
"We've got to change our strategy!" team rocket says, continuing to do the same ass thing for hundreds more episodes
Also, it takes them a whole episode to get from one side of a forest to the other half the time yet they unlocked region-wide fast travel for this episode.
SCOTT HAS ARRIVED. Agatha got reck't.
Also. Is this crescent hair thing anything. Does Scott have a Skitty. Also Scott reminds me of Jumba from Lilo and Stitch but less menacing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ash Agatha battle was fine.
Ash is actually very nice in this episode, sort of abnormally so for AG! Refreshing.
Overall, good episode, just a lot of exposition. Team rocket is there, not super interesting to me but whatever, good episode! I am ready for stuff to get more interesting!

october 31st, kappa kappa gamma
amber light brimmed from inside the various hanging jack-o’-lanterns that surrounded the outer entrance, parker’s eyes studying their expressions as she waited in line outside of kappa kappa gamma. or, more aptly, outside of their haunted house. the entrance before the entrance. the night was still young, with the moon’s waning crescent just seeming to find its place in the sky, but no one wanted to make their appearance too late. fear of missing out on any haunts and hotties was simply too big a risk.
adjusting the long strap of her little bag, parker took a giddy step forward, reaching the front. she’d made what many would consider an obviously mistake—showing up alone—though the hunched orc-man now at her side seemed eerily delighted by the fact. “a glowing bracelet keeps the haunts from making contact with flesh,” he explained, a snarl accenting the word flesh. parker glanced down at the one offered, green as science fiction ooze and just bright enough to draw the eye. “i think i’d like the full experience,” she decided, returning to their gaze. christ, the special effects makeup was impressive this year. “but thank you.”
given the nod to go ahead, she offered her own nod of thanks and stepped inside—though, not before the performer could get right up to her ear and give a gargling growl as she passed by.
Tumblr media
when parker was seven, she watched her first scary movie.
okay, that got her a little bit. parker had always been a fan of the spooky, though, the performer’s sudden snarl bringing nervous chuckles to her throat. anything, it seemed, that could get her heart racing was welcome. she reveled in not knowing what came next, eyes glued to a screen as her hand reached out for a sibling’s, friend’s, or partner’s. only, there were no hands to reach for now, as she approached a hallway covered in wooden planks, metal chains hanging from the ceiling. her stride continued in its slow, observant manner and a hand reached out toward her throat. it stopped just short, but not before lunging forward a second time. “christ,” parker gasped, right hand flying to her chest. she stumbled forward, all the while trying to make out the figure in the dark, but being unable to.
suddenly, she took a turn and was bathed in eerie blue light. the hallway seemed bare, save for scattered cobwebs and... was that fake blood? each footstep carried her forward in a careful, yet fascinated manner. each detail gained her appreciation, even if it’d eventually cause her heart to take up residence in her throat. she was a theatre student, after all—and this was already turning out to be a decent production. after a few steps, her eyes fell on a missing persons poster, taped up next to a door left ajar. brows creased, parker approached it and stepped inside.
they were everywhere. lost, missing, reward. she studied their faces, eyes scanning the strange collage until a familiar smile caught her attention like a stray nail stags a sweater. greer morrison. parker frowned at the page. as if the pool party hadn’t been grossly fucked up enough. then, without hesitation, reached up and delicately ripped it off the wall. “for fuck’s sake,” she murmured, quickly folding it up and stuffing it into her bag, lest someone just pick it up from off the floor and pin it up again.
when parker was sixteen, she was cast in the musical ‘carrie,’ based on the book and scary movie.
a scream from somewhere else inside the haunted house shattered the air. parker straightened up, head turning from side to side in search of the source, but couldn’t find one. it was enough, however, to get her to keep moving. swiftly, she left the room and continued on down the hallway until she reached a staircase. atop it stood a ghoulish figured—one you, apparently, needed to get past in order to move on. drawing a quiet breath, she started up the stairs, only taking her eyes off the figure once or twice to look down at her footing. it made no moves, not even when she reached the stare just before it. obtrusively, their arms stretched out at their sides, hands bracing the railing, and parker saw no way through but between. having scanned their hooded face one more time, she hunched down and began to slip through the space between their arm and the ground. eyes wide, she moved with caution, watching to see if they’d start to move. but they didn’t, not when she’d made it through and straightened up.
okay, not bad. good trick. only, just as she’d begun to think it was a fake out, a pair of hands grabbed her shoulders, shoving her forward with an unintelligible yell. a scream met her throat, blocked by her lips, and she hurried onward with renewed determination. unsure of where to go, a moving body across the way flashed in her vision. only, one second it was there and the next it’d vanished. okay, convicting enough to investigate.
parker moved closer, realizing once she’d come within a few feet that she’d seen a reflection in a large mirror. a mirror with writing on it. SOMETHING WICKED THIS WAY COMES. “macbeth,” the redhead recognized with a nod, eyelids fluttering as she scanned the reflective surface. “nice.” she dug through her mind for the rest of the couplet, while her hand dug through her bag for her phone. she knew they discouraged bright phone screens and flash photography, but one mirror selfie in a non-crowded area wouldn’t hurt. parker tapped on the camera button and slid over to video mode, then hit record. in frame was the mirror in whole, her costume-clad body visible behind the writing. then, she neared, smoothly shifting the camera lens up and down. she hadn’t noticed the webbing before, hand almost getting caught in it and bringing her to back up. then, in the sweep of one last look, someone else appeared in the mirror behind her. “RUN,” they yelled, reaching out, too, to push her forward and keep her going. at a loss between responding with okay! and running!, parker locked her phone, slid it back into her bag, and rushed on. apparently, to linger too long was to beg for interaction.
there couldn’t be much else left, the front lawn of KKG not exactly sprawling on forever. she went down what she assumed was the last hallway, eyes and ears out for anymore friendly halloween performers, when she came to two different doors. one nearer to her, marked with a message of “U.R. NEXT” in bold white letters. the other, a little further down the hall and bursting with subdued lights and music. curiosity taking hold of her, she moved toward the former, hand gently reaching out to grasp the doorknob. what the hell, she was living out her final girl fantasy or whatever. plus, she wanted to be able to tell everyone that she'd explored everything she’d found.
with a creek—because, of course—it opened, darkness seeming to spill behind it like thick ink. a stark contrast to the party that awaited just a few steps away. but, of course there was a pitch-black room. there always was, in these things. so, parker moved to step inside it, leaving the door open a good foot. just to be safe. the light it provided did very little, parker hardly making out a desk or table before the door slammed shut.
when parker was twenty, she found out she was living in a scary movie.
“hey,” she called out, walking to the door, “someone’s in here.” she reached for the knob, assuming it’d been a mistake. but when she went to turn it, she was met with resistance—someone was blocking her way out. the claustrophobia, the endless darkness, immediately began to set in. “hey,” she tried again, harsher, leaning her shoulder up against the door as she tried to work the handle. “ha-ha, you got me, let me out!” the struggle persisted for another few seconds, parker wishing she’d taken a glow bracelet after all.
at least, that way, she would’ve been able to see the figure that reached out and grabbed her ankle before it did. that did it—she screamed, the sound echoing throughout the small (or, so she assumed) space. with a final yank, the door blew open, parker stumbling out of it and shutting the door behind her.
when parker was twenty-one, it followed her to school.
a few passerbys—four or five students—who’d just entered the area came to a halt, studying her panic. “jesus,” parker started with a faint chuckle, a hand rising to brush her hair away from her face. “they got me good.” offering a particularly stupid thumbs up, she strode toward the final exit. entrance. whatever. quick breaths made her chest rise and fall with rigidity, the sounds of the party instantly calming her nerves.
“every fucking year,” she whisper-spoke to herself, head shaking in good-natured humor as she finally made it inside.

I Often Wonder
by Gabriel Cassidy
One time during my incredibly impressionable youth–I believe I was about twelve–I knew a kid whom I will refer to as E. This E had grown up in a house with a stepfather who mercilessly beat the shit out of him until child protective services was forced to intervene. E was a musician who never owned an instrument. Drums, he would tell me, were to be his specialty. His stepfather owned a drum set, but E was given strict orders never to touch them. Once, his stepfather caught him tapping the hi-hat cymbal playfully with his hand and, in his eyes, this was cause for a particularly cruel and unusual form of punishment. He grabbed both of his drumsticks and beat E within an inch of his life. E never, to the best of my knowledge, touched that or any drum set ever again, electing instead to develop the peculiar habit of tapping his collar bone with the fingers of his right hand in the style of various drumbeats.
E was a performer. Our English composition course produced a variety of plays adapted from the ubiquitous “required reading” novels of jr. high’s everywhere (e.g., The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, A Christmas Carol, etc.) He played an impeccable Scrooge, and an almost uncomfortably believable Tom Sawyer. During our lunch breaks from these performances, he and I would skip off to the restroom and inhale glue in the bathroom stalls. This developed into a habit. We would often ditch classes, assemblies, lunch periods, prospective make-out sessions with women, and even whole play rehearsals for the temporary euphoric feeling provided by the solvent. Strangely, while I would be rendered incapable of basic speech–and physically reduced to slightly above a vegetative state–E would continue about his day relatively unscathed, returning from class or rehearsals with only a slight slur in his speech, which actually served him quite well in his Scrooge performance.
A year prior to my acquaintance with E, I had fallen in love with a girl whom I will refer to as J. She was a goddess and the first woman in our school to develop breasts–the primary source of my friends’ envy when I eventually began dating her. She had an immaculately smooth crescent-shaped face, an adorable sharp nose, and beautiful golden hair that descended to her shoulders like water flowing unyieldingly from a faucet.
I dated J on and off throughout much of my pre-adolescent years, never seeing too much of her during school; however. This was due primarily to the fact of her being an unmotivated student, a “condition” that is often confused with stupidity in the public school system. Thus, she was placed in remedial courses taught by teachers whose talent lied more so in enforcing Bush’s No Child Left Behind law than relaying information to students.
During one of our relationship breaks, J had navigated her way closer to my circle of friends, developing an attraction towards E. This did not cause a rift between us; however, but, perhaps out of the looming fear of loneliness, my fascination with J was soon reignited. In between one of our glue sniffing marathons, we had decided–right there in the school’s bathroom stall–that we would share her. She said yes which, once we had sobered up, was an earth-shattering shock to both of us.
Despite her academic contempt, she was a poet. She was an artist. We often spent whole afternoons at her house, listening to poems and songs that she had written. Her parents’ garage was dubiously filled with canisters of paint and gasoline. Each of us would take turns climbing in through the window, reaping the stimulating benefits of these inhalants. We would then return to her room and lay on her bed together, staring at various portraits she had drawn and taped to her wall. Portraits of Jim Morrison, Jimi Hendrix and, of course, Kurt Cobain. These afternoons never progressed towards anything sexual, other than occasional kissing and one particularly exhilarating moment when she decided to take a bath while we waited in her room. E and I both urged the other to ask her if one of us could join, but neither of us had the courage, and thus her nude body has forever been a mystery.
A year later I was informed by my parents that I would be moving to a new state on the opposite side of the country. Idaho. One of God’s mistakes. It has been almost a decade since I last saw either of them, yet their memory still lingers within the bowls of my psyche with an arrogant confidence. And as I sit here, solemnly recounting the episodes of my past, perturbed by the potential absence of such relationships in the future, I think about the innately fleeting nature of time, and my own inability to appreciate what is present. And I often wonder where they are.
