I actually don't think the ages of the actors would be a problem to make Zutara canon in the Netflix Live Action if they were to go that route. Dallas Liu is currently 22 and Kiawentiio Tarbell will be 18 in about a month and a half.
By the time the show got to Book 3 and they're filming, they'd be 24 and 20, respectively, at the youngest. At most, they'd share a kiss or two, if it wasn't just an implied Zutara ending.
I don't think it's a big deal for a 20-year-old actress and 24-year-old actor to share a small kiss for their TV series.
If anything, it would be weirder to depict on screen Kataang, as Gordon Cormier is only 14 now and would be 16 by Book 3, whereas Kiawentiio would be 20.
Personally, I think the most likely scenario will be no romances at all for Zuko, Aang, and Katara. But, I would be happy to see Zutara made canon in some form. The Kataangers get the most important canon, the OG show! Throw the Zutarians a bone here!
But yeah, just to speak on that discourse.

There could be a LOT they mean by Azula getting screentime in the first season of the live action adaptation comes from them knowing a lot more about where the story goes for her.
And yes. Gonna let myself be dissapointed and have a glimmer of hope that yea, they lay the foundation to talk about the stuff with how Azula has her issies rooting in Ozai's abuse just as much as Zuko does. I hope they mention Ursa. I hope they start to set up that Azula feels unlovable and lables herself a monster, whitch leads to her falling in line to what Ozai teaches her: that fear is the only reliable thing to keep people around.
I don't expect them to lay this all out in season one, of course. But starting to lay those threads and building a foundation for all that? Yes please. I'll take that happlily.
The thing about this series is yes. There is a LOT of room to go into extra stuff with the time a TV Series allows. And starting Azulas story ahead of where it is in the animated series tells me they want more time to do OTHER things with her later on. Probabbly a lot of it.
And I want to hope that means something good for how I am gonna like Azula in the live action show.

Adapting Avatar: The Last Airbender to appeal to the Game of Thrones crowd is like adapting Monster High to appeal to Walking Dead fans. (I feel the need to say "Don't do that, Netflix. We now know you would".) It was a terrible idea from the word go. I'd like to think you'll learn a lesson from this, but after at least four awful live-action adaptations under your belt, it's safe to say you won't. And it's not that you're incapable of doing this right. A Series of Unfortunate Events and One Piece (so far) are both fine. Now, what could they possibly have in common that the failures don't? Oh, yeah. THE ORIGINAL CREATORS WERE INVOLVED.

What do you MEAN you're going to remove one of the most important aspects of Sokka's character arc in the first season? What do you MEAN you're going to remove Sokka unlearning misogyny, accepting change and embracing his role as a fighter and protector of the Avatar in order to end the war? What do you MEAN???

Somebody on Twitter pointed out that almost all of the netflix Avatar show was filmed so that the focus of the action would be at the center, so it could be viewed vertically, like on tiktok

I liked it better when Katara released Aang from his 100 year slumber through the pure unfiltered rage of a feminist rant at her brother

why do I see people complaining left and right aboout them cutting sokkas sexism arc but not about them completely cutting sokka out of the jet arc??? which in my humble opinion was much more important to sokkas character development overall and as a leader. sokka being the only one not blindly believing jet and his heroic act and instead trusting his instinct and revealing jets twisted morals and cruel plan that could have led to the death of a whole village full of innocent people??? no one???

Is the new avatar live action a perfect remake
No
Does it have a perfect scene of a random lady hitting zuko with a brush to stop him from trying to attack aang that wasn’t in the original
Yea and it was great

Okay, on the complaint about Azula not being composed and in control of herself enough...
Yes it IS a change to have her be a little bit unstable this early. Even more so with the change they've made to Ozai's interactions with Azula and Zuko.
Yes it is ALSO more true to real life.
No it does not make her less scary or skilled. No it does not make her arc less enjoyable in my opinion.
Okay, I said my peace and can admit I actually throughly enjoy the potrayals of ALL of the fire nation royal family. It feels just like the OG story but more layers and detailed, and I LOVE that. Being a Azula fan, I do love they are bringing this very notable sympathic side forward in the time line. I've said it a hundred times: Azula is the product of the same home Zuko is, even if the abuse took different forms. Ignoreing that is ignoreing canon fact. I appresiate them not holding that back till the last season like the orignal.
Yes there is some, weirdness going on with motivations. Mostly, with Ozai playing these games more directly with Zuko and Azula it changes their motivations. Ozai complimenting Zuko is WEIRD but. I think what that needs more of is cleaning up and clarifying narratively...which could be something easily handled in a second season where Azula is more involved anyways.

OH AND ANOTHER THING ABOUT THE ATLA REBOOT
the sexism thing??? we all know it's fucking stupid and purely performative to take out sokka's feminism arc, but can we talk about the fact that He Is Still Sexist????? he still thinks that what he does (running the village's defenses, which they've never needed) is vastly more important than what she does (wash the clothes, cook, etc). and yk what?? the live action reboot AGREES with him. it doesn't show or even mention katara doing any work around the village. all we see katara doing is practice waterbending - the only interesting thing that original episode 1 sokka seems to think katara ever does.
the live action show depicts sokka "doing all the work", fulfilling his traditionally masculine role of warrior/protector, and COMPLETELY DISMISSES whatever "women's work" katara does, as if she does nothing. seems pretty clear to me that the showrunners would love to absolve themselves of sexism by not talking about sexism, while in actuality being pretty sexist themselves
and don't even get me started on sokka not wearing the dress/makeup of the kyoshi warriors' uniform

Time… Time is a funny thing. The past… the future… It all gets mixed up. There's only one way to keep it straight. Always remember who you are.

Ok now we're just taking the piss right? Right?
Once again this sort of thinking is removing a fundamental character arc that makes this story what it is. A big part of Aang's journey, especially in season 1, but tbh it does return in later seasons too, is accepting that he is the Avatar, and that he's the only one who can end this war. During the whole first season he is in complete denial about who he is and what he's supposed to do, which is why in most of this season there's no sense of urgency, and then once Aang gets faced with a very real, very close deadline he panics. This makes it even more brutal when in season 3, after accepting this responsibility, he gets faced with the reality of failure. He runs away again, this time not because he doesn't want responsibility, but because he knows how heavy his responsibility is and he doesn't want to burden anyone else with it. Removing the first aspect, aka running away and denying responsibility, it in turn also removes the heavy emotion from his later arc.
It keeps surprising me that people who claim to be such fans of the original seem to completely miss the point of most of this story? Like how could you look at Sokka learning about women's rights, Aang learning to accept responsibility, and Katara's motherly warmth which happened because how young she was when she had to step into a motherly role, and think "well we should remove that." You're taking out all of character development and going purely off of plot (which isn't gonna be nearly as good without the character development!)
Atla is probably one of the most analyzed and picked apart story, has one of the most long running loyal fanbases, people are STILL making thinkpieces about this show, and you manage to still misunderstand so much???
