Conclusion
This Prequel cleanser was one of Dr Sam Ellis's first products. It's a non-stripping glycerin cleanser for the face and body formulated with 50% glycerin, inulin, and a unique aquaporin-stimulating active to boost skin suppleness. This skin-softening, humectant-rich glycerin cleanser effectively removes makeup, excess oil, and impurities while maintaining skin's natural moisture barrier and pH. Added arginine, oat extract, and aloe soothe and comfort. Designed for all skin types and suitable for dry or easily sensitized skin.
There really isn't anything like this cleanser in the market. Priced at $18, this is a steal for the amount of product you're getting. It's received several awards and is a fan favorite among beauty bloggers and cosmetic chemists. It pairs extremely well with active ingredients like tretinoin and retinoids.
While this works exceptionally well for those with dry skin, those with oily skin can also use this if you're using harsh acne treatments and want a gentle cleanser.

Testosterone levels in men begin to fall well beyond the age of 30. Testosterone is the hormone that regulates energy, and strength. Testosterone aids in the production of sperm and red blood cells. Many changes occur due to these reductions, including loss of libido, exhaustion, sadness, obesity, bulging tummies, poor health, muscle loss, and, in certain circumstances, a drop in blood sugar level. Some men keep the issue of low testosterone levels to themselves since it is an embarrassment to have poor sex desires. Herbalists provide traditional concoctions, but they are not appropriately created and do not work. As a result, the Animal Male Enhancement Testosterone Booster has been brought to the market.

How to feed yourself cheaply when you live alone
It can be so frustrating and difficult to get used to living by yourself. Apparently cabinets don’t come magically stocked with spices and you have to buy things??? with money???? So here’s a few things I’ve learned along the way along with some links to other great posts that have information along this subject too.
1. Secretly assassinate a relative and collect inheritance
2. Find a sugar daddy
If 1 and 2 are options then the rest of this post is worthless to you, if they are not options, keep reading.
Your first visit to the grocery store Buckle up because it’s going to be the most expensive one
You need to stock your kitchen since you are not a roach and can’t just eat the wooden cabinets. Every kitchen should have some combination of the “basics” which will be your non-perishable pantry items-those things that your parents house seemingly never runs out of.
The Basics
-Rice -Pasta (+any other grains you might like such as couscous, wheat berries etc.) -Flour -Sugar -Brown sugar (if you’re into baking like I am) -Baking Soda -Baking powder -Spices (for example, cumin, cayenne, oregano, basil, paprika, etc.) -Salt and pepper -Oats -Boullion or cans of stock -Cans of soup/packets of ramen -Coffee/tea
I suggest you buy these kinds of items in bulk if possible. If you have the space to store them, they will last you forever and items like these can make a meal that is supposed to be 1-2 servings into somethings thats 4-6 which I’ll explain later. Also, buying in bulk is cheaper per pound/100 grams (whatever system you’re using) so in the long run, you’ll save lots of money by buying one fat ass sack of rice a year instead of 15 every few weeks. Check your area for bulk stores, places that sell spices and grains by the weight. This will save you cash and can be more eco-friendly if you’re able to use your own bags/containers.
Tips for meals
It is so much cheaper to cook a larger amount of food at a time than making something for each individual meal. This is because for the most part, you can’t buy ingredients sufficient for one serving at the grocery store and you don’t want to buy something you’ll only use once and then the rest goes bad and bye-bye money. Making a meal that will last you 3-4 days is not only cheaper, but also saves time since after the initial cooking, all you have to do is reheat a little at a time later. You can take this a step further and use grains like rice, pasta and couscous to “cut” the food thereby doubling the amount of servings you have. Below are some really easy recipes that I use that last me days.
Things you can make at home for cheap
HUMMUS! Bc it’s a great snack, filling, healthy and is stupid expensive at the store and stupid cheap and easy to make.
-1 can of garbanzo beans -2 T of tahini (you can leave this out if you want, tahini can be expensive) -1 T lemon juice -1 clove of garlic, minced -Cumin, paprika, salt, pepper
Literally throw it all in a food processor and blend. If it’s too thick, you can add more olive oil or save some of the water from the beans and add that as well. If you do that, less salt will need to be added. If you use dried beans that you’ve soaked and shit you will need more salt.
If you don’t have a food processor, you can heat the beans up and smash it by hand, it’s more effort and it may be chunkier but it works. Same goes for immersion blenders.
Fun ways to shake this hummus up
-Roasted Red pepper: Chop 1/3 C of roasted red pepper and add. Replace some of the olive oil with some of the juice from the pepper jar.
-Roasted Garlic: Instead of mincing a garlic clove, expose the head of the garlic (lol) and rub with a little olive oil, making sure it gets into the cracks (lol). Wrap in foil and roast at 400 degrees (~200 C) for 30-35 minutes. Garlic should be nice and soft when it’s done. Roasted garlic is sweet instead of biting like raw garlic so using a whole head is okay and you won’t die when you eat it.
-Artichoke heart+black olive: Chop up one can of artichoke hearts with however many chopped black olives as you would like
-Pesto: Add in at least one tablespoon of pesto
Now the question is, how do I eat my hummus and the answer is, there’s actually a billion ways
-Put it on a sandwich or wrap! -Dip celery, cucumber, carrots, peppers in it! -Eat it with pretzels or tortilla chips OR if you’re a cheap bastard like me, make your own tortilla chips by cutting up some tortilla rounds, brushing them with olive oil, sprinkling them with salt and bake at 350 for 10ish minutes. I usually put mine into the oven right when I turn it on and pull them out when the oven is preheated bc I can’t be bothered to actually figure out a proper cooking time. Whatever, this is way cheaper than buying chips and they’re more filling. You can also make tortillas, it’s cheap and simple, I find they taste better, but it is slightly time consuming. Here’s a recipe. -Eat it with a spoon wgaf you live alone no judgement.
Coffee Creamer
Hell yes you can make this at home. The basic is about 1 3/4 cup of milk (whatever kind of milk, the more fat in the milk the creamier the creamer) and 14oz of sweetened condensed milk. You can also add in a few drops of any sort of extract/honey or some sprinkles of cinnamon/nutmeg whatever suits your fancy! Here is a bunch of variations. Also put 1/4 of a teaspoon of cinnamon per cup of coffee in with your coffee grounds in the filter for a cinnamon scented coffee.
Popcorn
Well, we all knew this one. But honest to god it is so much cheaper and healthier to pop popcorn using a bag of kernels than it is to buy a box of microwave popcorn. Just pour some oil and a tablespoon of butter into a large pan, add the popcorn and cook covered over medium heat. As soon as the kernels start to pop make sure you start jiggling the pan to keep them moving so they don’t burn and ruin your pan. I’m pretty sure you can put the kernels in a paper bag in the microwave too. Throw salt on it, or even cinnamon and sugar cuz why not.
RULES FOR GROCERY SHOPPING
1. buying in bulk saves
2. Don’t buy in bulk if you can’t use it all before it expires-like yeast! Most expiration dates are pretty generous and you can actually continue using the product beyond the date (this amount of time varies, please for your own safety please google it). Yeast is the only food I know of that is true to its expiration.
3. Avoid superstores when possible. Most of the time, you’re paying for the convenience. Superstores are often more expensive because you’re paying for the convenience of doing all your shopping in one place.
4. Ethnic markets are almost always cheaper-especially for trendy things like Coconut oil (so cheap at indian food markets!!) Find Chinese, Arabic, Indian, Mexican food markets around you and split up your shopping accordingly.
5. MAKE YOUR OWN BREAD, it can be very easy. Google it.
6. Off brand is just as good as the rest
7. Coupons, grab them in the front of the store if available
8. Just because something is a good deal doesn’t mean you have to buy it. I don’t care if orange juice is on sale, I don’t drink a lot of orange juice. You know what’s cheaper than something being 50% off? Not buying it at all. It costs $0.00 to be smart.
9. Don’t make grocery shopping a habitual thing. By that I mean don’t go grocery shopping every Sunday or whatever. Go grocery shopping when you need to go grocery shopping. If it’s been a week but you can wait 4 more days, wait 4 more days.
10. Don’t buy fresh herbs, grow them. A packet of seeds is cheap. Plastic pots are cheap. Potting soil can be cheap if you can find a place where you can buy by the weight instead of a massive bag. Plant the seeds according to the packet. Things like basil need to be watered often. Things like rosemary and thyme are okay chilling a couple of days without it. Read the packets and google it. Also it’s so rewarding to watch your little baby plants grow. An herb garden costs $10 dollars at the most to make. Fresh herbs at the grocery store cost $2-6 per package. Fresh herbs make meals taste a million times better I swear to god it’s the best thing you can do for yourself. Growing herbs also helped me with my depression so bonus.
11. If shopping at a super store, as much as possible stay out of the “middle”. What I mean is, things you buy should come from the sections closest to the wall-these include the produce, meat, dairy and frozen vegetables. All the processed foods are in the middle and though some can be cheap, they’re not filling and you end up buying them a lot. Doing things like making your own hummus can keep you out of the middle aisles and it’s healthier. Things from the middle you may need though are tea, ramen, grains, soup, peanut butter.
12. Plan your trip. Thoroughly look through your fridge and cabinets to see what you’re out of. I even keep a little white board on my fridge where I write what’s in the fridge and what’s run out. Write down what needs to be replaced/what you need for the next couple of meals. Do not stray from the list when shopping.
13. Go to Marshalls or Winners or whatever equivalent for things like olive oil, K cups if you have a Keurig (oh fancy fancy) and cool pink salt. They also have other kinds of oils like sunflower and avocado, and even sometimes protein powders. It’s way cheaper there and you can buy a liter sized bottle of olive oil for like 7 dollars when it would cost at least twice that at a grocery store.
14. Do not have the same grocery list every week. Prices of things change, your list should reflect that. If you’re wanting to get some sort of fruit for a snack, don’t get apples every week. Get whatever is in season. The prices of fresh produce in stores and markets will reflect what’s in season (i.e. the cheapest things). Lucky for us Bananas are always in season and are a super cheap snack that people forget about. I often wait until they’re ripe, cut them up and freeze them to make smoothies.
15. Don’t be afraid of tofu. It’s cheap as hell and once you learn how to prepare it, can be a fantastic substitute for animal proteins if meat/fish are too expensive.
16. Don’t forget, so many foods can be frozen. If something is crazy on sale, don’t be afraid to buy more than usual if you are able to freeze it. Here’s a list of things that can be frozen. TBH here, in Canada, I buy those big 3L bags of milk and store the little baggies in the freezer.
Finally, go to Goodwill stores and thrift shops to find kitchen appliances, dishes, and cookware for cheap! The best 7 dollars I ever spent was on a crock pot. These stores have so many items that last FOREVER, like a good pan, or a classic cafeteria.  Don’t think you can’t cook because you can’t afford the equipment. Kitchen equipment doesn’t have to be a huge investment.
That’s all I have for today. Good luck out there guys.

Link
This is a link for writers who have ever stopped to consider where their characters get their daily bread, and more specifically, their daily flour for their daily bread.
This can be useful for “homemaker” type characters in a modern setting, for villagers or cooks in historical settings, and even for post-apocalyptic survivors who have successfully harvested and threshed and stored a crop, and now have to figure out how to turn those hard kernels of wheat (aka wheat ‘berries’) into nice soft easily mixed and manipulated flour.
It gives a quick overview of thevariou  tools used in the past to grind various kinds of grains and legumes into flour, whether it was wheat, rice, corn, oats, barley, millet, wild rice, peas (yes, peas were used for bread flour!), lentils, beans, or whatever, and goes over the plusses and minuses of stone versus steel plates, so on and so forth.
When I was a teenager, I grew a bit of wheat in our back yard, in a little patch only a few feet on each side.  I weeded it, harvested it, carefully hand-threshed it, and then my mother got out her hand-cranked meatgrinder, put on the grain attachment, and had me try grinding up grain.  I was a kid, so...it didn’t go very well.  After a bit of laughing on both our parts, she and I took the grain to the house of one of her friends, who had an electric tabletop flour mill.
In the end, I managed to get just enough whole wheat flour out of the batch to make 20 shortbread cookies, and they were tasty...but I remember how much work it was to try to hand-crank the meat grinder, how it shifted because we hadn’t clamped it tightly enough to the counter...  It gave me a real appreciation for our modern conveniences, and a lasting impression on “the daily grind,”  which is a turn of phrase that literally comes from having to grind, day in and day out, that day’s amount of flour for bread, thickening for gravies, crust for pastries, and so forth.
If you blithely assume your character just magically has bread in their cupboard...it’s best to have a realm of magic where bread can indeed just “magically appear in there”...though a good number of your readers are going to be wondering how the magic words, and if it’s conjured, is it real, or is the character going to feel full for an hour, but be literally starving by the end of the day?
And no, you don’t have to show your characters in a Classical Age or Medieval era setting hand-grinding their grain, nor do you have to show them lugging sacks of grain to flour mills and sacks of flour back home again.  If they live near a market, and if they have an income, they can buy what they need, either bread outright, or pre-milled flour.
...The one thing you really shouldn’t try to do--even if it’s literally a paleo-era, pre-agricultural setting--is try to convince your readers that primitive man didn’t need grains to survive.  Carbohydrates are a vital part of one’s diet.  While you can survive for a while on a ketogenic (high protein) diet, your character will lose a lot of weight.  (Zachary Fowler, winner of Alone season 3, lost 72 pounds in 87 days, on an extremely high protein diet...but then he also was eating not quite one whole fish--and I do mean the whole fish, bones and scales and everything--perr day.)
Grains (milling them into flour to make them easier to chew and digest) are the easiest carb around.  Other sources include acorns and pine nuts, both of which need to be “leached” or soaked in running water for several days after being shelled and cracked, to reduce the bitterness. (Tannins for oak acorns, and pine resin for pine nuts.)  Taro roots, potatoes, yams, and winter squashes (not like zucchini, but like butternut, acorn, pumpkin, those kinds) are also a source of carbs, though they don’t have to be milled.  Cattail roots are also a will-known source of starch, while the indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest actually ate several varieties of fern roots, with certain species being both revered and highly prized as the most starchy and nutritious.
Other carbs can come from fruits, nuts, and berries, plus of course the ever-popular honey.  If you live in a warmer cilmate, cane sugar can be extracted from those plants, but if you live in a colder climate, you can tap various species of maple and birch trees to make syrups.  I was surprised to learn recently that bigleaf maples, which are found locally here on the West Coast, can produce the same ratio of 40-to-1 sugars in their sap as actual sugar maple trees! That means 40 gallons of sap will boil down to 1 gallon of syrup.  (You have to boil it down to at least that thick to get it to the point that bacterial will not grow in it; otherwise, it wills poil.)  Birch was more like 60-to-1 or even 100-to-1, depending on the species.
There is evidence that even back in the Stone Ages, paleolithic people put a lot of effort into harvesting things like hazel nuts, acorns, berries, cattail roots, so on and so forth, all in the pursuit of collecting and storing carbs to last them the year.
And yes, they’d take the hand-harvested grains of millet and so forth, and grind them between rocks to break up the coarse outer coating, to make them easier to bake and chew and digest.
I honestly don’t see the far distant future abandoning the need to mill or otherwise have the means to process flour for our daily bread, either.  It might get super fancy in how they do it, but it’ll still be a human need.

Hi loves! My latest post is up #ontheblog Jen Finds Gems
New Post has been published on https://www.jenfindsgems.com/twelve12-beaute-review-for-natural-hair/
Twelve12 Beaute Review for Natural Hair
I discovered Twelve12 Beaute on Instagram, when I was searching for a natural hair stylist in my area to slay a silk press. This Black Owned, plant based haircare company is based out of Philly and they have made their stamp on the natural hair industry in a major way.
Their page stopped me in my tracks. Every single photo and video that they posted showed girls with shiny, bouncy hair. GORGEOUS hair that had movement and it looked so healthy! The Laid Pretty Boutique is located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania so I knew the chances of me flying out to get my hair straightened were slim but I was happy to see that they made and sold their own line for consumers to use at home. I was beyond excited to try their line on my hair to try my at-home silk presses. Little did I know, I would be singing their praises for getting my curls all the way together too!
Read on for my honest thoughts about the Twelve12 Beaute Shampoo and Conditioner for natural hair.
So Glo Organic Shampoo– 13 oz, $20
The Twelve12 So Glo Organic shampoo contains some of my favorite ingredients for a dry, sensitive scalp such as rosemary and tea tree oil. These ingredients work together with some of the best like Oat protein, Vitamins C, E and B3, B5 and B6 to help cleanse and nourish your scalp and hair. I’m usually weary of clear shampoos because they tend to strip my hair and be very drying, but I was proven wrong. Yes, this shampoo will get your hair squeaky clean– but it did not dry my hair out and it felt great on my scalp. How can you not get into this description:
“Organically handmade to give your hair a new beginning! Our shampoo cleanses your scalp of all impurities while deeply replenishing each hair strand to obtain and maintain healthy hair growth.”
The fragrance is a sweet herbal blend of tea tree and something that I can’t quite name (I thought it was lemongrass) but it smells nice. It’s nice to get a break from the baked goods, heavy perfume or fruity fragrances that are on the market right now.
So Glo Organic Conditioner– 13 oz, $20
This conditioner is the star player, honey! I have never had a conditioner glide through my hair this way. It’s not too rich and it’s not too runny– it has the perfect velvety consistency and it immediately softened my hair once applied. I didn’t need any detangling brushes or styling tools to detangle my hair and I was still able to condition in a quarter of the time it typically takes me.
What I love about this conditioner is that is doubles as a deep conditioner. According to the directions on the bottle, you can allow it to sit on your hair for 5 to 10 minutes with heat to allow it to better penetrate your hair. I’ve only used it as a traditional rinse out conditioner but I will definitely be using it as a treatment for added nourishment!
Here is a shot of my hair freshly washed, without any products applied. My curls were shiny, defined, and super soft!
Check out this clean ingredient list:
No sulfates No parabens No alcohol No synthetic fragrances or artificial colors
Made with 89% organic ingredients!
Conditioner: Enriched with keratin, oat protein & lavender.
Ingredients: * Aloe Barbadensis (aloe) Juice, * Orbygnia oleifera (babassu) oil, behentrimonium (naturally derived from rapeseed) methosulfate, cetearyl alcohol, * Olea Europaea (extra virgin olive) oil, * Prunus Armeniaca (apricot kernel) oil, * glycerin, silk amino acids, hydrolyzed oat protein, Anthemis nobilis (chamomile) extract, glyceryl stearate, sodium stearoyl lactylate, panthenol DL, Vitamin E acetate, rosemary seed extract, vitamin C, vitamin B3, vitamin B5, vitamin B6, propanediol (naturally derived preservative), ethylexyl glycerin (naturally derived preservative), potassium sorbate (food grade preservative), citrus.
*denotes as naturally derived
As no products are perfect (although this duo is pretty close) the only con I found was that the ingredients are not listed on the products. I have a weird habit of reading product labels in the shower or re-reading labels when I am deciding what to use for a wash/styling session. If you too are a frequent label reader, make sure you check out the full ingredients list on their website.
The Truth
I highly recommend this line for natural/curly hair and I’ve added it to my list of favorites for natural hair. This line is especially great for naturals with a sensitive scalp or those looking for clean, lightweight products. Both the shampoo and conditioner also passed my migraine trigger test– they are scented but the fragrance is not overwhelming and it doesn’t linger!
Are you ready for an update after I’ve done an at home silk press with Twelve12 Beaute? Let me know in the comments!

Product Comparison By Eben van Tonder 24 August 2020
Introduction
Meat products fall in the following three categories.
Pure Meat Products is where every ingredient except the spices come from an animal carcass.
Meat Analogues are starches and soy, grains and cereals which are made so that it tastes like meat but contains no part of an animal carcass. The question comes up as to why would a vegan, for example, who does not want to eat meat, buy a product disguised as meat, but which, in reality, contains no meat? Pure meat and meat analogues are therefore two opposing and extreme ends of the spectrum.
Meat Hybrids is the middle of the two and combines meat and plant-based protein, essential for the purpose of achieving a cheaper product. There is something deceptive about this class of products since it is often designed to mislead as to the real nature of the products (I say this, despite the label declaration, which is often still enigmatic to consumers). They think it’s meat, but it contains a percentage of non-meat fillers. This is almost always done to reduce the price of the product, which, in a country like South Africa, is not necessarily a bad thing. Affordable food, where “affordable” is relative to the income level of the consumer, is a very important consideration. It must also be stated that for the most part, large producers of this kind of products do not add as fillers and extenders, anything except high quality, acceptable and healthy products such as soy in the meat to extend it.
My personal preference is clear. I prefer pure meat products mainly based on taste and, to a lesser extent, on matters such as allergy which relate to health in that some of the fillers may be allergens. Taste of pure meat products can, in my personal opinion, not be matched in taste, firmness, mouthfeel, or any other organoleptic characteristics (the aspects of the end-product that create an individual experience via the senses—including taste, sight and smell).
Meat Hybrids I can understand, living in Africa where there is a long tradition of honouring every scrap of meat. My main issue is with meat analogues.
It was with this background that I was intrigued by Denny Mushroom’s range of meat substitute products they recently launched. When I saw it being advertised at our local Spar I immediately went looking for it, but due to its popularity, only the mince was left. My wife and I decided to compare it to soy mince.
In order to do any evaluation worth its salt, we find it best to pare it against a competitor. Here is our evaluation:
The Face-off
We chose the same basic method of preparation and ingredients.
Denny Beef Style Mince
#gallery-0-11 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-11 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 50%; } #gallery-0-11 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-11 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
Ingredients:
Mushrooms (75%), Oats, Onion, Seasoning (Yeast Extract [Garlic, Sugar], Salt, Dextrose, Caramel colour, Silicon dioxide, Herbs & spices), Maize, Vegetable fat (Sunflower seed, Palm kernel, THBQ, Sodium alginate, Calcium sulphate, Dextrose, Phosphate, Modified Starch), Psyllium husk, Beetroot, Ascorbic acid, Flavouring, Guar gum, Potassium sorbate.
Phrases like “meat alternative” and “100% Vegan Superfood” removes all doubt – it contains no meat.
The product looks like mince and it is obvious where the name comes from. I have a bit of an issue with the “Beef Style” part of the name since it creates an expectation that it will taste like beef. The ingredients list makes it clear that there is no beef in the product.
Final Evaluation
At first, I am disappointed by the “Beef Style Mince” when I realise that it does not taste like meat at all. My problem with it was, however short-lived when I took my second bite! The taste is “refreshing!” It is unlike anything I had before and is delicious! It stands on its own as a well-formulated product! Sure, it tastes nothing like mince, but it still is exceptional!
Minette and I both noticed that it binds well, meaning that it mushes into a meatball (well, not a meatball 🙈🙈🙈 but you get my point) 🤣 This characteristic opens up a world of possibilities for the chef and is also distinctly different from minced meat.
The manager at Spar told me that the mince is not selling as well as the rest of the range. In my personal opinion it will be a pity if, for commercial reasons, the line is killed.
I understand why they would never go there, but is ripe for inclusion in a food hybrid formulation. A thought for the future as a different brand name with a unique positioning will do well with it. It scores a well deserved 8 out of 10 for a refreshing taste, its originality and the overall product formulation! Hats off to the development team!
Veggie Mince of Frey’s
Ingredients
The product comes in an inner pack with gravy, but right from the start, one can see that it looks far less appealing than Denny’s product. The ingredients are:
Vegetable Protein (Soya, Wheat (Gluten)), Flavourings (Onion, Pepper, Maize Starch, Anti-caking Agent (E551), Savory Flavour), Vegetable Oil (Sunflower Seed), Wheat (Gluten) Flour, Potato Starch, Plant Fibre, Maize Starch, Thickener (Methyl Cellulose), Ground Coriander (Sulphites), Salt, Onion, Mustard, Colourant: Caramel IV
Final Evaluation
Similarly to Denny’s, it positions itself squarely for the vegetarian market with no meat. The taste was unfortunately such that I could not take a second bite. We threw it all into a bag and in the dustbin. It scores a disappointing 2 out of 10.
In contrast to this, I got up at 2:00 a.m. this morning and sneaked into the kitchen to finish the leftovers of the Denny product!
Conclusion
I understand why marketers link non-meat products to meat. They believe a meat point of reference will aid them in selling the product. Life may very well prove them right. Still, it is a pity, particularly in the case of Denny who produced a unique and exceptional product which should be able to stand on its own two feet, apart from the simile to meat. Why not call it Mushroom Style Mince? or Denny Style Mince?  Whatever you call it, it is a brilliant product!
Caviat
– Frey’s is a well-respected producer and there are many of its products which I love and regularly buy. The Mince is only one of them which I will rather give a miss.
– The views expressed are purely my own. The products were prepared in an unscientific way and no blind test or other evaluation was performed besides merely my first impressions upon tasting it. I advise consumers to be their own judge if they agree with me or not.
– I refer to myself as doing the evaluations for the sake of not making my amazing wife complicit in my comparisons! 🙂 Reality is that I am a very poor cook and she is in a league of her own. Her sister and she practice cooking as an art and not a way to get food in one’s stomach! Minette, therefore, prepares all the meals – exceptionally well. I only enjoy and judge them with her!

DO YOU USE AN EYE CREAM? IF SO, WHAT’S YOUR FAVE AND WHEN DO YOU USE IT (AM/PM/BOTH)? PLEASE SHARE BELOW… _______________________________________________________ I’m kind of wishy-washy when it comes to using products formulated specifically for the eye area. I think “eye cream” is just a marketing term like “skincare for men.” In fact, just last week I disclosed that the single eye treatment I use most frequently wasn’t even formulated for the eye area. That’s not to say there aren’t perfectly legitimate eye creams out there if you’re the eye cream type. And the FAB Skin Lab Retinol Eye Cream with Triple Hyaluronic Acid is quite a well-formulated treatment. As hesitant as I am to use Retinol anywhere on my face, I was naturally cautious using the brand’s Retinol Eye Cream in my eye area. I proceeded with extreme trepidation the first time I attempted it. Guess what! No irritation whatsoever. Not then, not now. In line with FAB’s philosophy to do no harm by sensitizing the skin, the Retinol Eye Cream is formulated with microencapsulated Retinol that releases the active gradually throughout the night “to help support natural collagen production and cellular turnover to minimize the appearance of crow’s feet, fine lines, and wrinkles”. The formula also contains what the brand describes as “Triple Weight Hyaluronic Acid” — essentially three distinct molecular weights of the common humectant. I actually really like the formula, with its multitude of pro-skin health actives, including Shea Butter, Retinol, Caffeine, ceramides, peptides, Vitamin E, Allantoin and, of course, a healthy dose of soothing Oat Kernel Extract. A TINTED MINERAL SUNSCREEN SOLUTION FOR PALE COMPLEXIONS
Out of seven days in Portugal with friends recently, I wore makeup during the day just once. The rest of the time, I wore tinted mineral sunscreen, partly because time spent putting on a face when there was exploring to be done seemed silly, and partly because it’s easier to re-apply high-SPF sunscreen over sunscreen rather than makeup. The thing is that tinted sunscreen on its own can make the skin look rather flat. And when you’re pale like me, or paler, tinted sunscreen is often a smidge or more too dark.

what i WON’T do with mineral sunscreen
Just re-applied Aveeno SPF 50 mineral sunscreen while lounging at the back of a city-tour bus in Lisbon
Sure, you could mix a little white mineral sunscreen in to lighten the tint, but I won’t do that because I’m not certain how mixing one formula with another might compromise them both. Sunscreen has to cover skin evenly, including those areas that frequently stretch and crease. Mixing two formulas together might result in a patchy coverage that only looks even, and it might affect the durability of the coverage as well.
Or you could drop some foundation or pigment into plain mineral sunscreen to customize a tint, but I won’t do that either because I refuse to compromise the level of SPF promised on the label. Plus, adding pigment will absolutely affect how thoroughly the sunscreen covers the skin and for how long. “It’s only a drop,” people say, but how many drops are you starting with? Four or five drops of sunscreen? And will each drop of pigment and sunscreen be exactly the same amount every single day? Nope, I’m not playing SPF roulette, thanks.

Despite my strong feelings on the subject, if you choose to tint your mineral sunscreen with pigment or foundation, at least you’re wearing protection, even if you don’t know exactly what that protection level is or whether it covers skin properly.
what i WILL do with mineral sunscreen

I’m just pale enough that tinted mineral sunscreen is a tiny bit dark for me. I’m also just pale enough that I can wear regular, tint-free mineral sunscreen by itself. If I apply bit by bit and rub it in, I get very little white cast, and besides, it helps to temper any redness in my complexion without looking ghostly (unless it’s Shiseido mineral Wet Force SPF 50, which made me look like a zombie). But one day in Portugal, a trick occurred to me: why not layer the tinted and un-tinted versions like foundation and illuminator? As in the tinted version all over, let it dry, then dab the plain white mineral sunscreen wherever I want to add a bit of glow?
To maintain formula integrity, Stephen Baldwin (Senior Associate Director of Global Suncare Formulation Development at Bayer, the company that makes Coppertone), and Naomi Furgiuele, (Senior Director of Global Beauty Face Care at Johnson & Johnson, makers of Neutrogena and Aveeno) both advise that it’s better to let a base layer of unadulterated sunscreen dry before applying anything on top. And wherever we went in Portugal, I always had a tinted and un-tinted mineral sunscreen with me, so I could apply and re-apply on the go. So….
The result is in face photos in this post. In the right light – always important – tinted mineral sunscreen with a bit of non-tinted mineral sunscreen on top made my skin look luminous and far younger than it is. The combo looks best over skincare that gives my skin a dewy finish, by the way – not-so-much over anything matte. And I’d get more dimension if I used a tinted sunscreen with a deeper hue, of course.
I also put plain SPF 50 mineral sunscreen on my lips, let it set, then topped it with a teeny touch of lip gloss to give it a little colour. (Probably reduced the SPF level somewhat because gloss is so emollient, but I didn’t have a mineral SPF lip balm with me. Coola makes one, by the way; it comes in eight shades, including nudes, pink, bronze and red that can double as face colour. )
Wearing tinted mineral sunscreen all over, with un-tinted mineral sunscreen in areas I want glow
This mostly-sunscreen face isn’t for everyone, of course. I did rather envy some of the really well put-together tourists with pretty makeup and hair and super-cute outfits. But although I missed having brows and eyelashes (this would’ve been an ideal time for lash extensions), I chose not to put that effort in.
If you’re wondering why it’s taken me until now to figure this mineral-sunscreen approach out, it’s because I’m so indoorsy, especially in the height of sunshine weather. I actively dislike being in direct sunlight and tend to prefer the protection of a whole building and lowered blinds rather than sunscreen. But there’s no avoiding the relentless sunshine in the Algarve… a story about that is coming soon.
In the meantime, please enjoy a slideshow (that will look better on your phone) from the trip with my lovely friends (who planned everything): Deborah, Stephanie and Heidi. We went to the Algarve, Sintra and Lisbon; this is a quick overview!
The LaSpa SPF 30 Moisturizing Mineral Sunscreen ($40 at laspanaturals.com*) in the slideshow is just one of the options I had with me in Portugal. It’s fragrance-free and made (in
Tumblr media
!) with certified-organic coconut oil, beeswax, carnuba wax, avocado oil and rosemary leaf extract. It’s a little on the oily side, but my skin likes it. I just wish it were an SPF 50. The brand recently launched a mineral SPF 50 Ultra Sun Protection Stick ($18 at laspanaturals.com), but I haven’t tried it. I’ll use this 30 in greyer months; my skin will really like it in the winter. LaSpa uses “non-toxic” in their marketing, though… ugh.
In the headshots, I’m wearing Vichy Ideal Soleil SPF 60 Mineral Ultra Fluid Tinted Lotion ($28.50 at well.ca; they ship to the USA) with Aveeno Sensitive Skin SPF 50 Mineral Sunscreen ($15.97 CAD at amazon.ca and $9.99 USD at target.com) on top, down the centre of my face. As well, on most days I wore a UPF 50 hat with a giant brim – it’s in the slideshow. (Sunscreen isn’t great as a first line of sun defence, especially if it’s mineral, a fact that’s part of my upcoming story.)
Do you wear tinted mineral sunscreen? Have you ever tried one that’s too dark for you? Do you already use tinted and un-tinted mineral sunscreen this way?

[su_note note_color="#f4efe5"] Best Sunscreen For Kids [/su_note] Best Sunscreens For Sensitive Skin Buying Guide Choosing the best sunscreen for sensitive skin is not as easy as some people assume it is. Many people compare different sunscreens in the market with some believing that the higher the SPF, the more effective the product. Below is a buying guide to help you in choosing the perfect sunscreen for you and your family. Know your skin type The first step to buying the correct sunscreen is to know your skin type. If you have sensitive and dry skin type, then you cannot buy some products because they will dry the skin, even more, causing irritations and more sensitivity. If you have combination skin, you should also know the ingredients you can and cannot use on the skin. All the same, people with sensitive skin types mostly suffer from dryness caused by various factors, which leads to extreme sensitivity prone to easy burning from the sun’s rays. Babies have sensitive and delicate skin that needs protection at all times when outdoors. Buy products with broad-spectrum SPF 15 and above Buy sunscreens that have SPF 15 and above for the most effective protection against UVA and UVB rays. For the majority of the people with sensitive skin, SPF 15 is fine. However, for those that have extremely fair skin or come from a history of cancer in the family, SPF 15 is low and they should go for products with SPF 30 and above. Do not go with the belief that the higher the SPF, the more potent the sunscreen. A sunscreen with SPF 15 can filter out 95% of UVB/UVA effectively, which is not bad while one with SPF 30 can filter 97%. As you can see, the difference is not much. Ingredients The next most important thing to look for is the list of ingredients. You have to remember you are dealing with sensitive skin and anything toxic will irritate you even more. The most popular ingredients in quality sunscreens are zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. Other notable ingredients are avobenzone, ecamsule and oxybenzone. Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are some of the oldest ingredients in sunscreens. They are also less expensive than the others are and they help to protect the skin effectively. Ecamsule is a new ingredient in the market that helps to block UVA. The ingredient is expensive and not as popular as the other two. Avobenzone is also another new and expensive ingredient that also blocks UVA effectively. Unlike zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, it is also not very popular. Water-resistant Another thing you should look for when buying a sunscreen is its water-resistant abilities. Being outdoors means you will either go for a jog, exercises, swimming or bask. You, therefore, need a product that can resist water and sweat. What it means for a sunscreen to be water-resistant is that it stays on for at least 40 minutes if exposed to water. The stronger ones can hold resistant for up to 80 minutes. Being water-resistant is not the same as being waterproof, which means that after some time, you will, need to reapply them for another round of protection. Brand name Sunscreens come in many different brands. Some of the brands are popular with many quality products to their names. However, you do have to go with a certain brand because everyone talks about it. If you have second thoughts on any brand irrespective of its reputations, go with the one you like or the one your dermatologist recommends. As much as personal preference is important, ensure that you are buying a product with all the right ingredients.  Budget Your budget will also determine the kind of sunscreen you want. The prices of the products vary from brand to brand. Make sure to check how much you want to spend against the cost of the brand you want to purchase. Read reviews You are dealing with sensitive skin, which would get worse if you use anything irritating. To be completely sure about the product you want to buy, read all the reviews and compare them with those of a different product. The experience of the other users will help you to make a better decision on the product you want. Baby-friendly sunscreens Some of the adult sunscreens are not ideal for the delicate skin of the baby. This is because some of the adult sunscreens contain some chemicals that are too strong for the bay’s skin. Sunscreens with zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are safe r the bays skin but anything with ingredients such as oxybenzone or dioxybenzone should be a no as it can irritate. The American Academy Of Pediatrics also recommends that it is not safe to take babies under the age of six months out in the sun. For children aged six months and above, a sunscreen with SPF 15 is ideal. The safe sunscreens for children are also ideal for people with allergies and skin problems such as rosacea and eczema. Read Next: Best Face Wash for Sensitive Skin Wrapping it up Sunscreens are great for protecting the skin against UVA and UVB rays. However even as you use the best sunscreens for protection, you should also be careful. Follow the laid down guidelines on application and avoid staying with the product on the skin for a long time. All the above sunscreen products come with great reviews and they provide excellent protection against the ultraviolet rays. They are affordable and easily available. There is no better way of showing your skin love than by protecting it from damage.
