I've come to the conclusion that being assigned the fandom-mandated "sunshine character" is the worst possible fate a character could face

#maybe I'm just biased because the characters that this happens to tend to be some of my favorites but I think I'm onto something #these characters aren't allowed depth of emotion or complex inner worlds. once a character is fanonized as the 'ray of sunsine' #or the 'cinnamon roll' they cease to occupy any space outside of that role in fanon content. they're happy & silly & not much else #no matter how much depth they may actually have in canon. #popular fanon has a tendency to treat happiness & goodness like states without any emotional complexity. #emotional complexity is reserved for the anti-heroes & jerks-with-a-heart-of-gold you see. #atp 'X is a ray of sunshine' has begone to feel like code for 'I don't actually care about this character very much nor do I understand #their canon narrative so I'm just gonna ignore them 98% of the time. but hey they're really nice! that's something! anyways—' #this is about many characters but I particularly want to call out aang & nightcrawler / kurt wagner as two who get this the worst. #because christ the mischaracterization they get from people who never think about them outside of the 'uwu small bean' box is infuriating #also steven universe & miles morales. although it's not so bad for steven after suf #fandom bs #please pretend I typed 'begun' a few tags back

Yukio haters are some of the funniest people out there. Mostly because they're often Rin fans I swear and that influences a lot of their takes. They're so upset that a character has deep flaws and isn't a literal sunshine baby to Rin. They take it so personally like he's a real person.

Even then it's frustrating because they reduce Rin down to nothing. He too has some deep flaws that make Yukio andhim butt heads. And sometimes Yukio's anger at him is justified! Rin never takes the situation he's in seriously until it's too late. And by that point Yukio's already in deeper with other issues. Them butting heads isn't because Yukio's an ass only. It's because they're both refusing to listen to one another and actually speak on their problems.

It's totally more on Yukio's end with his own problems being much stronger. But neither are these perfect angels. They're interesting characters that have deep issues with each other. And they're just starting to work it out. There's going to be bumps in the road, but Yukio is trying his best in the recent chapters. And so is Rin.

It's just turned form frustrating to funny now to see people get upset at Yukio. I would rather him be the mess he is than be the actual perfect character type he's a deconstruction of. It wouldn't be aoex without him and boy would it be so boring.

honestly when i tried to figure out why some fans are so mad at ivypool these days i was looking through avos and. the scene where ivypool apologises to twigpaw for not supporting sending a patrol for skyclan is genuinely very sweet??

Lately I've only been wishing to grab a comic about my favorite character and just have a genuinely good time reading it.

#I can't remember the last time I took a Deadpool comic and genuinely had a good time about it #I hate the direction they took with his character and it's so disrespectful that I don't even talk about I don't even think *any* Deadpool #fan genuinely talk about it because were so tired of his kids characterization we all just collectively decided to ignore whatever hell #marvel through at him #but rant aside #it's just– #I am not sure if comic books are fun anymore I don't even know who I am making content for half of the people on my notes haven't touched #comic book and aren't pretending to do so #people who read the comics tend to be so mean or bitter about it that even if you follow most will be angry about something #comic or fan related and I don't know if I can blame them but following that is draining #and as much as I was trying to be a good sport about it you make a post about comic book characters and #and the overwhelming response is 'I don't read the comics but'– following up by a take about them that doesn't even recognize any core #aspect of their personality that you can't even grasp you can't even recognize them #you can't recognize them on tue cannon you can't recognize them on the fannon #and no matter how engaging you try to make content about the fandom people just–*refuse* to read it. And then– they *refuse* to tag fannon #content as fannon #and *refuse* to leave either #Yes we are all having fun but how can a character tag be so so filled with people who have no idea of who they are #how can a character can be properly loved and take care of and have content that respect them if no one makes any attempt to *know them* #and it's disheartening because *comics* are supposed to be fun *fannon are supposed to be fun* #but for aome reason it's really *really* hard to have fun here anymore #I created this page to share my love for the characters I care about and see more content of people who care about them too #but I can't even *find* people who care about them any more and when I do they're all so angry and upset– And I *cant even blame them* #I just... Not sure if people honestly forget or just kind of ignore how Dior explicitly took part in the Battle of Sarn Athrad one of whose main objectives (or at the very least RESULTS) was to retrieve the Silmaril. As if a huge part of the irony of the run-up to the Second Kinslaying isn't that Doriath are the ones who killed people specifically in pursuit of the Silmaril (that were longstanding allies of the Fëanorians and contributed in the wars against Morgoth as recently as the Union of Maedhros, even potential friends re: Curufin, and whose craftsmanship Beren has to thank for being able to cut the thing free from Morgoth's crown in the first place). Dior's connection to the Silmaril isn't just having it passed down from his parents, he actively fought for it (which I'll grant wasn't necessarily his chief motivation and more important to his father, but the larger point still stands). That's the context in which he refuses to even negotiate with the Fëanorians claim.

as cool as their design is im really starting to dislike the sonau in general, aside from their stuff suddendly being everywhere and everything being about them and how cool(tm) they are now with the mystery stone turning people into dragons and the similarities between the sonau and the three dragons (naydra, eldra, farodra) its actually not an impossibility that they used to be sonaus as alot of people have been theorizing about ..but ...... idk that would very much ruin their otherwordly yet ethereal mystery to me

Not to poke the discourse bear, but have you ever noticed how nobody talks about any of the romanceable female companions’ sexualities the same way they do with Astarion? People LOVE to erase the fact that he’s canonically pansexual (as are all of the companions) and insist that he’s gay. I’d argue that Minthara strikes me as the stereotypical “mean lesbian” but no one contests her sexuality or attacks others for putting her in a M/F pairing, nor do I think they should.

To me it just sounds like a combination of biphobia and misogyny. Also I don’t like the idea that because Astarion is more flamboyant than the other male companions that he HAS to be gay.
