They were playing walkie talkies in the neighbourhood. A bunch of boys with plastic toy guns, taking on an alien invasion; the aliens had just landed down on planet earth and it was their role to defend the neighbourhood from their violent wickedness. They put on American accents from all the movies they’d grown up with. The sun baked the dusty streets and there was no school tomorrow.

Jake was one of said boys. He was tall and athletic and though not particularly liked by the peers they tolerated him because he was related to the likeable brother who was essential to the gang. Jake’s gun was also one of the coolest and much coveted by the others.

He took a side alley and ran on down there, into the shade, behind the grocery store and the barber, where the kids weren’t allowed to go. Beside the trashbins he hid. And stayed there, enjoying the small sense of misbehaviour … And then when he heard the gang calling his name, he decided to not call back, and tell them where he was.

Jake stayed there for some time. They messages to him through his walkie talkie. “Jake! Are you there? Where did you go?” The others wondered where he was … until it seemed as if there was an actual threat; like karma had made their alien game something ominous.

It was beginning to spoil things, and had already changed the mood … when Jake send a message through to the team:

“HEY TEAM! I’M BEING ATTACKED! COME HELP ME, PLEASE! I’M BEHIND THE BARBER! ROUND THE BACK OF THE BARBER!”

And his line snapped off right there.

The message sent a chill through all of them and then Jake’s brother said, “Let’s go get him,” with a white face, and then they were off and running towards the barber. All seven boys with the thin fourteen legs whizzing in the sunlight.

They turned into the back alley and hopped the forbidden fence and then they were in a watery blue shade.

All was silent. Suddenly their toy guns seemed beyond stupid.

And then Jake jumped out of them from behind the bins and said “RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!” which made every single one of them jump.

His big arrogant face laughed with a hollow mouth. Nothing wrong with him. They slandered him with all kinds of squeamish names.

“This is why we don’t like you, Jake,” one of them said.

But he didn’t care and only guffawed at priceless volume.
