Healthy and Iron-Packed: Foods That Help Fight Fatigue and Boost Energy
Tumblr media
Do you often feel tired and fatigued, even when you get enough sleep? If so, you may be suffering from iron deficiency. Iron is an essential mineral that plays a crucial role in transporting oxygen throughout the body. Without enough iron, your body may not be getting the oxygen it needs to function properly, leading to fatigue and low energy levels.
Fortunately, there are many iron-packed foods that can help fight fatigue and boost energy levels. Here are some of the best foods to include in your diet:
Spinach: Spinach is a superfood that is packed with iron, as well as other nutrients like vitamin C and folate. These nutrients work together to help your body absorb and use the iron in the spinach. Try adding spinach to your salads, smoothies, and omelets.
Lentils: Lentils are an excellent source of iron, protein, and fiber. They are also easy to cook and can be added to soups, stews, and salads. Lentils are a great option for vegetarians and vegans who may not get enough iron from animal sources.
Red meat: Red meat is one of the best sources of iron, especially beef, and liver. However, it is important to choose lean cuts of meat and limit your intake, as too much red meat can be harmful to your health.
Oysters: Oysters are not only delicious, but they are also a great source of iron. They are also high in zinc, which is important for immune function and wound healing.
Fortified cereals: Many breakfast bowls of cereal are fortified with iron, making them a convenient and easy way to boost your iron intake. Just be sure to choose cereals that are low in sugar and high in fiber.
In addition to eating iron-rich foods, it is also important to pair them with foods that are high in vitamin C. Vitamin C helps your body absorb iron more efficiently, so try pairing your iron-rich foods with citrus fruits, bell peppers, and broccoli.
If you are experiencing fatigue and low energy levels, it is important to talk to your doctor. They can perform a blood test to check your iron levels and recommend a treatment plan, which may include iron supplements or dietary changes.
Conclusion
Including iron-rich foods in your diet can help fight fatigue and boost energy levels. Spinach, lentils, red meat, oysters, and fortified cereals are all great sources of iron that can help keep you feeling energized throughout the day. Just be sure to pair your iron-rich foods with vitamin C-rich foods for optimal absorption, and talk to your doctor if you are experiencing persistent fatigue.

The daughter of a butcher, Smith supported her artistic practice early on working as a private chef. Quiet moments alone in the kitchen precipitated the contemplation of ingredients, serving ware, and culinary implements, as well as the meaning that can be associated with them. Fine china and silver have long been symbols of status, family, tradition, and history, while expensive cuts of meat and delicate pastries are not foods of the working class. As Smith’s focus has primarily shifted to her artistic practice, she continues however to contemplate the subtle meanings of these items in her work. Our favorite warehouse sells a wide variety of items and caters to cultural diversity. We have seen the entire goat in the @costco Business Center. Regular warehouses in Northern California sell ox 🐂 tail and beef tongue. Both $8.99/lb. About 3-4 lbs per pack. Have you seen this at your warehouse too? 👀 #costco #costcofinds #costcohaul #dinnertime #cooking #beef #beefitswhatsfordinner #beeftongue #oxtails #oxtailstew #oxtailsoup #nowaste #protein #costcofans #oxtail #redmeat #meat #butcher #bayarea #dinner #groceryshopping #grocery #food #groceryhaul (at Foster City, California) https://www.instagram.com/p/Co98ACHuGEk/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

"O Youth and Beauty" (The Stories of John Cheever)
The more I read John Cheever, the more I see how much WWII fucked up an entire generation and then fucked up the generation that followed. Our Parents Fuck Us Up, goes that poem. The baby boomers spent a lifetime trying to deal with their parents surviving WWII with varying results - including "greatest generation" suck up tomes and building that weird financially wealthy but emotionally poor lives that they had for their children.
This might actually make more sense in a story that references the war directly, but there's a Quantum Leap episode that doubles as a fan letter to Jack Kerouac. Dean Stockwell explains that the 50s were boring but then came "On the Road" and everything got fun.
Which is very strage when you consider how much the generation that fought in WWII worked hard to build that boring life (with their GI bills and their suburbs and their Cold War to keep unpleasant political systems out) only to see many of their kids embrace the people like Kerouac who came back from the war severely fucked up and questioning everything. Tearing everything down, first with flower power and then with Reagan.
Cash Bentley, the ostensible hero of this story, might not have fought in the war, but the need to relive past glories looms large. This is a story about an angry drunk who spends most of his time going to parties and running obstacle courses around the house.
Maybe if he had fought in the war, he might have been less likely to try to relive his youthful track star. Note that he's 40 in 1953 so when he was a track star, the 1930s were raging with all the poverty and fascism and Communism brewing a toxic mix that would lead to the war. So what he remembers as his happy youth when he could still run around tracks was a miserable time for the rest of the world.
I call him the ostensible hero, because his wife gets all the perspective. She's the one comforting him when he first breaks his leg. That broken leg is the point where even he knows that he is too old, or gets angry about it.
This seems strange to a modern reader (especially a modern Millennial or Gen Xer) who knows that 40 isn't necessarily that old and that it's very easy to be in pretty good health with some careful eating and semi-regular trips to the gym. Sure, you see some people at that 20 and 25 year reunions (or whom you would see if you see if you went but can see on Facebook) who look like hell, but most of us know the power of moisturizer, water, exercise and diet.
But this was 1953 and those people wanted to kill themselves. Jack Kerouac was 47 when the booze killed him. Cheever made it to 70 but he had to quit drinking else he wouldn't have made it to 60.
So Chase - cute name for a track runner - is trying to relive a lost youth with athletic displays while also doing all he can to destroy himself.
Not for nothing do most critics think that he gives his wife the starter pistol knowing that she'll shoot herself. He's been on a death race for years and why not? He's been disappointed that he stopped being 21 and why not let his wife shoot him.
Of course, I think that his wife shoots him because she's clumsy. She's not necessarily unhappy that he dies. Ok, it doesn't really say that she's happy or unhappy but after spending that many pages with this guy, the reader definitely is happy to see him go. He's obnoxious and spoiled and a juvenile delinquent going to pot.
So the last sentence where she shoots him dead is a funny one.
Most critics like to praise John Cheever for seeing the humanity in even the worst characters. However, this one is just an asshole. He's an asshole with a believable backstory of being a vain track star who can't get over the fact that his life has moved on, but that only makes him more detestable.
