"I went back to my favorite shape of thread structure radiating from the middle. The energy, or emotion gets concentrated into the middle forming a stream of red thread. To me, it is a shape of maternal love, or representation of life in nature. If you see a tree from top, this is how the branches look like. If we could see a tree root from the very bottom, it is the same. So as a structure of a female organs such as breasts and placenta." -- Rima Day on Scriptum XXII
Rima Day uses thread, fabric, and paper to create artwork that is inspired by nature and the human body. Day studied fashion design both in her native city of Tokyo, Japan and later in New York City and worked as a freelance custom ballet costumer in New York City and Connecticut. Her skills as a fashion designer are evident in her beautifully hand-stitched artist’s book. This is our third post in honor of National Embroidery Month!

“Using a needle to write stories.” Former costumer and wearable art designer @rimadayart uses needle and thread how others would use brush and paint. Inspired by nature and the human body, her fabric books feel incredibly ethereal and soul-touching. — #beautifulbizarre #rimaday #needleandthread #fabric #humanbody #fabricbook #inspiration #newcontemporary #contemporaryart https://www.instagram.com/p/Cn9ehSqI7qM/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

#Gratitude is a theme for this month. Repost from @rimadayart, whose work came to my attention via @frog_hollow: I probably say “thank you” everyday to somebody. But real gratitude truly comes from somewhere deep in the heart and blossoms out. This is how I feel right now that I finished watching the opening video of the show organized by @societyforembroideredwork. Being invited to a show is always very nice but this one was very special for me. Thank you for @teksheva @felicitygriffinclark @catframpton for giving this opportunity♥️ #tonedcyanotype #exvotos #rimaday #stitchedphoto #altprocess #rimadayart #exvotos #cyanotype #alternativephotoprocesses #stitchedpaper #stitchedart #contemporarytextileartist #contemporaryfiberart #flamingheart #embroideryonpaper #slowstitch #embroideredphotograph #embroideryart #handstitched #leafskeleton https://www.instagram.com/p/CV70ObtrjyQ/?utm_medium=tumblr

“Eu faço arte com jeans usados. Criar essa arte me permite me conectar com um passado distante, que adoro e gostaria de ter vivido pessoalmente. [...]

“I make art from used jeans. Creating this art allows me to connect with the distant past, which I adore and wish I could have experienced personally. [...] The markings and gradations of blue caused by distressing the jeans stimulate my imagination. Each marking and frayed edge has a history. My works present imperfection, wear and decay as beauty, a perspective which I believe stems from Japanese sensibility and aesthetics that I was raised with. The traditional fiber and couture methods that I use juxtapose traditions of the past with the modernity, mass production, and utilitarianism that jeans symbolize. As traditional sewing techniques have increasingly become lost in the post-industrial age, I thought I could preserve some of these techniques by incorporating them into art. Through my work, I explore the boundaries that separate art, craft and fashion.”
