In a little art rut and not feeling super motivated so it's a perfect time for me to return to the basics and draw very self-indulgent American Girl art. This time, Samantha Parkington's extra/limited edition outfits

I added lip paint and a hint of blush to my 1991 PC Samantha. Now she kinda looks yassified but I think it works for her!
While I normally think Pleasant Company items are better quality, it’s a bit of a pet peeve of mine that the dolls seem to lack color compared to Mattel dolls. I’m not sure if it’s because the paint has faded overtime, but I used my acrylic paints and an acrylic sealer. It ended up a bit bolder than expected like makeup but Sam looks pretty!

one thing that i wish the books had addressed is how haunting it must’ve been for samantha to visit coldrock house. i think the fandom really easily forgets that samantha is an orphan (and has been since she was around jenny’s age) because she has an otherwise functional and loving family in her life. but there’s no way that she never thought about the fact that she could’ve ended up in a place like coldrock house had she come from a different background… i cannot imagine how haunting that must’ve felt, especially at her age, and i think it makes it even clearer why she was so determined to get nellie and her sisters out of the orphanage

Look at her collar. Is it frilly, high-necked, brightly colored, and/or heavily accessorized? Congratulations! You’ve found the character on whom the writer has projected his or her own fears about femininity and materialism — or as I call her, the Little Fancy Bitch. Above all, Little Fancy Bitch is stylish as hell. From books to films, her fashion sense has remained astonishingly consistent, combining traditional notions of old money with maximalist femininity. Think frilly, over-accessorized pinafores, steam-cleaned pea coats, blindingly white knee socks, and hair that behaves exactly how it’s supposed to.
Fancy Little Bitch is a term of endearment, by the way, because I believe this trope to be woefully misunderstood. The funny thing about the Little Fancy Bitch is that often she isn’t really a villain at all — most of the time, she’s actually a friend or acquaintance of the protagonist, written into the story solely to show how cool and chill said protagonist is. But to me, she just illustrates how overrated being cool and chill is.
But I’ve had a fondness for this sort of character that’s only grown over the years, and I think I know why. In a world of bookworms and tomboys, the Little Fancy Bitch is an unapologetic try-hard who has more important things to take care of than worrying about what everyone else thinks of her. It’s also important to mention, I think, that the Little Fancy Bitch is ultimately a comedic device. She’s there because the things she says are hilarious, and in children’s books, the girls don’t often get to be the ones delivering the jokes. - "In Praise of the Little Fancy Bitch Aesthetic," Rebecca Jennings (x)

I heard a rumor that there might maybe be a historical doll drop this week. I believe it after my trip to the new AG place LA.
I submit for your consideration:
Not pictured, Molly sweater pattern chair cushions.
It’s all happening!

A little WIP of my two favorite girls. I am quite lazy when it comes to finishing my art but I really like this piece and have an idea I hope to execute and have finished by Valentine’s Day!
… but just in case I don’t… take this for now

I took Samantha to our local ballet's version of The Nutcracker last night! She brought her own ticket (to the bemusement of the usher 😂) and the mini-nutcracker she received from Santa last year. We had so much fun: Sam got tons of compliments and attention, I picked up a new ornament for my tree at the merch table, and the show itself was nothing short of magical. ✨ The only real disappointment was that one of the Mouse King's subjects 🐭 was out in the lobby at Intermission, interacting with the audience, but we missed getting a photo with him because I took too long at the merch booth. 😕 Ah well, hopefully I'll have better luck next year.

So I tried my hand at doing my own modern take on Samantha's meet dress and I think it turned out really cute 🩷

in case you're wondering how I might be doing mentally, this week I've watched 10+ hours of American Girl content on YouTube and bought myself (full grown woman with bills to pay) 7 American Girl books online. Last week I was so British I'd barely even heard of that brand. This week I would literally die for Kirsten Larson. The DollTube pipeline is real.
