I am an armchair linguist, as can be seen in many of my other book reviews for Words Across Time.  I also profess to be a Christian, and as such I have a particular interest in the language of Scripture.  The Christian Bible is written in three languages:  Hebrew (the Old Testament), Greek (the New Testament), and a small amount of Aramaic (also known as Chaldean) which is sprinkled amid several books (mainly Daniel and Ezra) within the Old Testament.

One should note, however, that the Bible, like nearly every other book and document in history, was not written in a vacuum.  It is informed by, and reflects the influence of, countless cultural and linguistic influences.  This is especially true of the Old Testament, given that it was assembled (many Biblical scholars prefer the word “compiled”) over the course of centuries of unprecedented upheaval and socio-political shifts in the Near and Middle East and across North Africa.  It is therefore no surprise that many languages show up in Scripture, either directly or indirectly, above and beyond the aforementioned.

This volume is a tidy and exceedingly informative compilation of articles written by experts in specific Biblical-era languages.  Many of these languages have become either extinct or are only used in very restrictive liturgical settings (meaning that they are no longer used in secular discourse).  Messrs Kaltner and McKenzie have done an admirable job with this collection of monographs.  For this review I’ll mention a few specifics about the structure and content of the book followed by a couple of observations of my own.

The book contains ten chapters, each devoted to one or more related languages.   The bulk of these chapters – indeed, all but one of them – discuss languages that are currently classified by linguists as Semitic languages.  Some sources would call these languages Nilo-Hamitic or by other designations, but the reader of this review is likely to have heard “Semitic” used much more frequently.  There are a number of Semitic languages still in use today.  The largest in terms of native speakers is Arabic (by far!).  Hebrew is also a Semitic language, as are Amharic (one of the principal languages spoken in modern-day Ethiopia) and Maltese.  [Fun trivia fact:  Maltese is the only Semitic language to be written with the Latin alphabet and read left-to-right across the page.]

The language groupings in this book are, in order:  Akkadian; Ammonite, Edomite & Moabite; Arabic; Aramaic; Egyptian, Hebrew (Biblical and Epigraphic); Hebrew (Postbiblical); Hittite (the only non-Semitic language!); Phoenician; and Ugaritic.  With the exception of Biblical Hebrew (and to a lesser degree Aramaic), the articles on the languages focus on how elements of each language’s grammar, syntax, semantic breadth and pragmatic extent exerted influence on the authors of the Biblical books.  Each article is written by an expert in the specific language area.  The tenor of the writing varies quite a bit, from nearly plainspoken to extremely pedantic, so the reader may wish to brace themselves for quite a waterfront’s worth of writing styles.

The chronology covered by these languages spans from roughly the third millennium BCE to roughly 300 CE – quite a lot of time for languages to evolve and adapt.  Evolution of language was especially notable in this time period when the vast majority of users of the language were illiterate.  The written word often provides a conservatizing filter on language, slowing the degree to which its phonetic and grammatical patterns change.  An excellent example is provided by Greek, which has been a written language for at least four thousand years.  A modern Greek can still read the classical (Attican) forms with general comprehension.  From this volume, the language with the longest continual usage is Arabic, and again, a modern Arabic reader would have little trouble reading and understanding written Arabic even from pre-Qu’ranic times.

I loved this book.  It opened my eyes to the realms inhabited by lots of extinct languages that nevertheless live on through the Bible in ways great and small.  If you’ve ever been curious about what the writers in past millennia might have been up to, this book forms a good foundation from which to satisfy that curiosity.

Yankees Sweep Twins.

Yankees 5 Twins 0 W-Schmidt (5-1) L-Ryan (2-3)

The New York Yankees are showing the Twins just how good the American League East can be. They took the first two games of the series and looked for the sweep this afternoon. The Yankees were ready from the start as Anthony Volpe smacked a Joe Ryan fastball out to left for a solo homer to lead-off the game. Aaron Judge kept the rally going with a walk and Alex Verdugo singled to center. Gleyber Torres doulbed in a pair and New York led by three before Minnesota grabbed a bat. The Yankees would get back to work in the seventh as Gleyber Torres lined a one-out double to center and Austin Wells singled him home. New York had one more rally in the seventh when Juan Soto walked and Aaron Judge doubled. Alex Verdugo hit a sac fly to left and the Yankees lead grew to five. Meanwhile, Clarke Schmidt was phenomenal with eight shutout innings. He struck out eight Twins and Victor Gonzalez had a 1-2-3 ninth as the Yankees finished off the sweep.

-Final Thoughts- Joe Ryan had a rough first inning then settled in. He went 5 1/3 innings and allowed four runs on six hits with a walk and five strikeouts. Caleb Thielbar eventually got out of the sixth, Cole Sands gave up a run in the seventh, and Steven Okert had a perfect eighth. Jay Jackson had a 1-2-3 ninth. The Twins scattered three hits on the day. They went 0-for-1 with runners in scoring position and left six men on base. Today's game lasted a quick two hours and fifteen minutes. The Twins will head to Cleveland for a big early season series with the Indians. Simeon Woods Richardson will face Triston McKenzie tomorrow night.

Solo [Getting Ready for Alabama] Part Two

Jayce (‪@ofmangledmanner) walked into our flat; Jayce picked up #AshleyLynn she is very excited about Daddy being home; she is telling him about what she baked today then Ashley said to him that Nancy growl at me. “Daddy Nancy growled at Mama” He narrows his eyes went on Nancy. AshleyLynn pats his chest. “Daddy can l go play” He just smiled at her; she knew that Daddy wanted his kiss and hug; Ashley looks exactly like Jayce. Ashley went to the playroom to play with her barbies; that’s her thing right now. She has a great time doing it. Jayce came over to kiss me and sat next to me; he sees pictures on the coffee table of him and us. I smiled at him; Nancy is at his feet. She knew she was in trouble with Jayce; I still didn’t understand why she did it, leaning against Jayce, cuddling up against him. Tomorrow morning l have an appointment with the dealership for the RV.

Wednesday Morning. I got up with Jayce getting ready for the office; I’m getting prepared for the appointment for the RV, paying for it, Jayce (‪@ofmangledmanner) hands me his credit card, placing my hands on his chest, “I have my credit cards.” He just leans down, kissing me very softly, touching my stomach; I smiled very proudly at our little bump. I’m so excited to have our twins. Marie knocked on the door. “Master Gunnery Sergeant Jayce and McKenzie, I hope you both are up. Ashley and Angel are eating now” Jayce reaches for the door opening the door; he grins at our oldest daughter. She growls at him the game they play. “DADDY, I LOVES YOUS” She hugs his leg, he scoops her upholding her, she looks at him. “Daddy, can we go campings?” I smiled at his mouths. “I got her a Berenstain Bears Go Camping” He rubs #AshleyLynn’s back we walked to the kitchen, the biggest laughed on #AngelSavannah, I kissed her head, leans down. “Good Morning, the sweet girl, are you happy this morning” #AngelSavannah giggles showing her teeth to me. Granny puts coffee in front of Jayce (‪@ofmangledmanner). “Jayce Liam, your lunch is packed up #AshleyLynn, help me.” I heard Jayce chuckles at #AshleyLynn. She takes her seat next to her sister, #AngelSavannah, to finish her breakfast.

“McKenzie Grace, I have gotten a phone call from the recording studio. You own them a song, and you're done with that,” I nodded at Granny. “Alright, I guess l will use one of Mama’s songs; I thought l wanted to end the album with Jayce and l wedding song” She smiled at me. “That’s beautiful, McKenzie Grace.” Jayce looked at me. He is trying to wake up; Marie is in a dress, the door knocked she went to get it, she opens the door her gentleman is standing there with flowers for her. She brings him in, “This my family, this is Master Gunnery Sergeant Jayce Caelan.” they shake hands.

“It’s a pleasure meeting you all. I’m Ryan Stevens,” Marie blushed at Jayce talking to Ryan; I got up, walking towards Granny whisper to me. “Did you check out this guy McKenzie” I nodded at her. “So far, he is clean, but why is Marie paying for everything? He would make more money if he were in special forces” Marie knew that I’m very protective of the family and very close friends” Granny looks at me. “I think he is a con artist” I looked at Granny, nodded at her. “Probably Granny. Do you think Daddy can watch the girls you come with us” She nods at me? “You’re father wanted to take the girls to the park l will come with you when you buy the RV; I don’t like this clown.” Jayce went to the bedroom to finish up for the office; I walked to say goodbye to him and see him later. “Jayce” He looks at me with a sexy grin on his face. I hugged him, and he pulled me on his lap. He kissed me very passionately. Granny knocked on the door. “McKenzie Grace, leave my grandson alone, get going.” I kissed Jayce again, getting off his lap. She laughed. “This why you kept getting pregnant with Jayce,” I smirked at her. “Granny, do we have to talk about this now? We need to pick up the RV” She laughs at me; Marie and Ryan went with us, Daddy decided to come with us at the last minute, the driver is there, Granny didn’t want me to do that long ride with someone we didn’t know about Ryan.

We arrived at the RV dealership; the sales guy is standing there watching me for a minute. “Aren’t you McKenzie Rossi” I smiled, shaking his hand. “I am, but l go with my husband’s last name. It’s McKenzie Caelan. It’s a pleasure doing business with you” He smiles, taking us to look at RV. “So this is a new RV perfect for your family, Mrs. Caelan. It’s a New Aire 3543, I step in looking at it, and l saw the living room, no rug, just we need a broom for it. It’s not big enough for the girls, Daddy, Marie Jayce, and l. “It’s not big enough for us,” He nods. “Let’s go to the next size” We walks down little l saw one l did want to see. “Can l look at that one” He nods at me? “That’s 2020 TIFFIN MOTORHOMES ALLEGRO RED” I step in, looking it’s what l wanted enough room for us. I am pleased with it; Daddy already brought a pop up for Marie and him to camp with us. Then we walked throughout the 2021 GRAND DESIGN SOLITUDE. “McKenzie, the truck can handle this. All Jayce will have to do is a park and put on the safely 2-by-2-inch studs.” I’m glad my Daddy is with me too, he looks at me. “Don’t get the 2020 TIFFIN MOTORHOMES ALLEGRO RED” I nodded at my father. He walked with me. We liked the 2021 GRAND DESIGN SOLITUDE. A lot better more room had two bedrooms the girls will love the bunk beds the kitchen is big enough along with the living room, I was very excited and pleased with the one Daddy picked. “I think Daddy, you are right about this one. I will like to buy it.” I wrote out a check for the dealership, and he hands me the keys; they want to Inspected one more time before we leave; he chuckles at me. “It’s a been a pleasure meeting you, Mrs. Caelan,” shaking his hand. I whispered to my Daddy. You need to buy a truck now because we are driving it.” My father chuckles at me. “Taken care of McKenzie, let's get you home to rest, so Jayce (‪@ofmangledmanner) doesn’t worry about you and the twins” I take my Daddy's hand with his extra help walking down the steps; I wanted to look at it again happy with my purchase. “Daddy, what do you think about Ryan” He looked at me. “McKenzie Grace l will talk to you about after your nap. #TBC

Selling Yarns 3: Weaving the nation's story was a four-day event that presented a conference, a market day, workshops, an exhibition and associated activities program, and launched the inaugural Indigenous Art Film program. As the premier national forum for Indigenous textile and fibre in the country it was supported by the Centenary of Canberra, drawing people to the nation's capital from across the country.

Thirty Indigenous communities and art centres and 134 artists from every state and territory in Australia converged in Canberra to participate in Selling Yarns 3: Weaving the nation's story. Indigenous artists and elders, and art administrators, came together and participated as speakers, workshop facilitators and market stall holders to share their stories, exchange their knowledge and skills, and to trade. They opened their hearts to each other and to other conference delegates and visitors. As Tim Growcott so eloquently stated post conference:

"An authentic spirit of reconciliation coursed strongly throughout the four days, with so many stories and examples of practical collaborations and life- changing projects. The conference was a recognition of the important and sensitive work being accomplished by like-minded creators, forging links with the living past and forming models for healing into the future."

The project was a huge success, inspiring artists and creating strategic alliances between Indigenous communities across Australia. There has been significant cross cultural engagement and inspiration with international Indigenous artists and culture which paves the way for lasting relationships with opportunities to develop further collaborations and joint projects. Establishing dialogue and sharing cross-cultural exchanges with international artists, curators and researchers has placed Australian Indigenous textile practice within the broader international arena.

Indians Rally Late To Beat Twins.

The Minnesota Twins have picked up two nice wins over the Indians to start this four-game set. They looked for another victory with Sonny Gray on the mound tonight. The Twins night got off to a good start as Jorge Polanco led-off and crushed a Logan Allen fastball out to left for a solo homer. Minnesota had a one-run lead after an inning of play. That lead proved to be short-lived as Andres Gimenez lined a one-out single to left in the second. Gabriel Arias singled to center and Will Brennan hit into a fielder’s choice that plated the tying run. We remained tied until the fifth as Christian Vazquez doubled with one out. Donovan Solano doubled him home and the Twins retook a one-run lead. Sonny Gray sailed through six innings then hit a wall in the seventh. Gabriel Arias led-off with a single to center and Will Brennan crushed a curveball out to right for a two-run homer. Cleveland had a 3-2 lead after seven innings of play. Enyel De Los Santos threw a scoreless eighth and the Indians’ bats got back to work in the ninth. Steven Kwan knocked a Jorge Lopez change-up out to right for a solo homer and the Cleveland lead doubled to two. Emmanuel Clase had a 1-2-3 ninth and the Indians took Game 3 tonight at Target Field. 

-Final Thoughts- Sonny Gray pitched a good game despite the rough ending. He threw 6 2/3 innings and allowed three runs on ten hits with two strikeouts. Jovani Moran threw a scoreless inning, Jorge Lopez gave up a run in an inning of work, and Emilio Pagan got the last out of the ninth. Donovan Solano and Kyle Farmer had two hits each. The Twins hit 1-for-4 with runners in scoring position and left six men on base. Carlos Correa did some fielding drills before the game and still didn’t feel good enough to go. Joey Gallo was put on the injured list with a hamstring injury and Kyle Garlick was called up in his place. Tomorrow, Triston McKenzie makes his first start of the year against Joe Ryan.

She looked very adorable in the outfit that Kitty made her for the Fourth Of July weekend. Kitty got up, taking her hand to the kitchen, gave Angel Savannah an ice pop. “McKenzie, the Kitty, is struggling about the loss of the baby, so can you help me out” I nodded at Cox. I have been there with miscarriages. They are very hard to get over. “Of course l will; I will make plans with her. Kitty starts to laugh. The girls are getting her mind off things. I heard them say to challenge me in a song. They are showing her how to do it.
