Dr. Oop - “Run This” Connect The Dots: Music 4 All Cities 1999 Hip Hop

Dr. Oop (aka Dr. Oop Capone or Droop Capone) is a highly underrated L.A. rapper who's been around for over 25 years. Similar to a handful of other underground dudes like Louis Logic, MC Paul Barman, Young Zee, and Celph Titled (to name just a few), Dr. Oop is one of those guys whose modus operandi has been to deliver witty wordplay and clever metaphors, all with a boisterously over-the-top, fun rap persona. He's been rapping since at least '94, with his first appearance on an impossible-to-find cassette tape compilation, and over the years has earned praise from a bunch of hip hop outlets, including two appearances on URB's "Next 100" list. He still continues to rap to this day, having released a full-length just last year called BLessings and Curses.

Although Dr. Oop made his debut in 1994, it wasn't until 1998 that he'd drop his first release, Nommo Warfare Vol. 1, to local underground fanfare. Produced by Thes One of the, at the time, about-to-be-underground-famous, People Under the Stairs, the record appeared to open a door for Dr. Oop. In '99, he'd follow up with Subterrain / Reign on the Sherman Oaks-based Blackberry Records and also appear on one of my favorite hip hop compilations of the late 90s, Connect The Dots: Music 4 All Cities. His contribution to that compilation would then serve as part of the b-side on a split 12-inch between he and another underrated L.A. guy, Mykill Miers, released in 2000.

"Run This" is just a super fun and unserious track that features Dr. Oop traveling on eccentric trains of thought through his mind palace as he blends in silly, braggadocious battle rhymes that parodize the archetype of the pseudo-intellectual and overconfident MC, sounding something like an absurd version of Freddie Foxxx with his gravelly, guttural voice and commanding mic presence.

Like a lot of L.A. underground beats of the late 90s and early 2000s, this one has that boom bappy sparseness to it that features only subtle changes, courtesy of yet another underrated L.A. dude, Mum's the Word. With a lo-fi drum track, a considerable amount of bonging bass, and a chiming funky wah melody, Mum's the Word's bare-bones production allows Dr. Oop to strut his ironically cocksure stuff.

Really fun late 90s hip hop track from L.A.'s underground.
