By "listened to" I don't mean that you have to necessarily completed/be up to date on it, but have listened to at least a few episodes in their entirety enough to have gotten the general gist of the show.
Please reblog so that this can leave my Circle Of Podcast Fan Mutuals

This is part 3 of a three-part poll. Parts 1 and 2 are linked below. Please respond to all parts in order.
Part 1 | Part 2
The reason I am running this poll is that many TMA fans have a hard time telling when Jonny is saying Gerard vs Jared in the podcast. The oft-cited reason for this is that he does not pronounce the second "R" in "Gerard," thus making it hard to distinguish the two names.
This confused me for a long time, as I can tell them apart regardless of the "R," based on the "E" vs "A" sounds. But it occurred to me that the E/A distinction is the same one as exists in the words "merry" and "marry" - two words that many people cannot tell apart. Those particular phonemes get lost in many American accents, meaning that the words are spoken and heard as homonyms despite technically having different pronunciations.
My predictions are that the results of this poll will show that people who hear "Gerard" and "Jared" as the same will also hear "merry" and "marry" as the same, and that this will be the largest group. People who hear one word pair as different, will also hear the difference in the other one, and this will be the second largest group. There will be a small number of people who can hear the difference between one word pair but not the other. I do not know how fandom association will change these results (but I expect most interaction will be from TMA fans anyway).
...All that aside, I'm very curious to see if I'll be proven wrong!

YO TMAGP fans, looking for something to quench you thirst for horror while the show is on it's break?
May I suggest Ghost Wax?
It follows the last reclaimer Voncid, and his apprentice Luca, as he extracts statements from the dead.
Just like TMA it starts out fairly episodic but then the meta plot kicks in soon after. Currenly 40 episodes out.
Selling points: Voncid has old man baby girl vibes, it's queer, there's a cat whose more than a cat, kick ass women, it's creepy as fuck at times, there's bees, fish people, the Glorious, Luca is adorable.
Please listen to it, it needs more love!!!

that's me complaining about fanon again etc
It's kind of mega meh how the TMA fandom has assigned Martin's Loneliness to the fog.
The fog is a Lukas's family thing. Ymmv on how far Peter Lukas would've affected Martin, depending on your interpretation of their relationship etc. That's fine and good and nice. I myself drew Fog!Martin a couple of times. But everyone manifests the Entities in their own manner, which would probably mean that Martin would also develop its own twist.
I listened to MAG blind. I deliberately avoided and blocked fan works for years until I finished listening, because it was one of those "oh i might pick this up someday" thing. So my Lonely!Martin was of rust (rusty smiles, stuck in a poise), steam (tea) and sea wind (as per Peter's influence). But once I finished the show I could never, not even once, find not-fog Martin in any creative endeavor that wasn't mine. Black or POC Martin are rare, but at least they exist?
The homogeinity of Fog!Martin really proves fandoms sometimes will declare something as So Very True they limit their creative power towards it, and that's kinda sad, man. :/
(btw not-fog Lonely!Martin indications are so welcome. Link me! Please!)

My #1 post of 2022
Hey there! If you consider yourself a fan of fiction horror podcasts, then I have a recommendation for you!
Spirit Box Radio is about Sam Enfield, who finds himself replacing renowned psychic the Illustrious Madame Marie as host of the Advice and Community Segment, a show for witches, arcanists, and the magically-inclined. However, Sam seems to have no penchant for the Arcane Arts, and in his struggles to be a good host he finds out that the show may be haunted not by ghosts, but by secrets.
The show has the creeping sense of unease of The Magnus Archives, the weird whimsy of Welcome to Night Vale and the LGBTQ+ representation of Hello from the Hallowoods!
If this sounds like something you'd like, then I have good news for you: The show has completed two whole seasons and a third (and final!) one is in the works, but it needs your help!
youtube
The show is trying to raise £6500 by October 28th to pay everyone who works on it, like it was able to do in its second season thanks to the previous crowdfunder. Please consider supporting if you've got the means!
Other ways you can support are reblogging this post and/or this post, retweeting this tweet and, of course, listening to the show on your podcatcher of choice!
EDIT: The crowdfunder has now closed, a huge thank you to everyone who supported it!! I still highly recommend you give this pod a listen.

hello yes please complain more about tma. i listened to the entire thing and was bored the whole time, mostly bc of the characters. i had the hardest time remembering anyone's names and god forbid i even try to piece the plot as i went along. it had its merits at some point but before, during, and after it got popular i genuinely could not understand it's amount of success simply bc i've listened to other podcasts with immensely better characterizations, aestheticism, storytelling, and cohesion and have not seen nearly the same amount of hype or fan activity
sooooo true. so true. tma fans are like less annoying harry potter fans like fucking. Listen to another podcast bro. listen to what its trying to be: WTNV or some shit
i listened to a good chunk of it mostly cus it dropped in a good time of my life to listen to podcasts (covid made me go on so many walks) so like i have a . decent understanding of what it was trying to do but i couldnt fucking be bothered to listen to it weekly or whatever the hell. i remember first really getting the "this is lame as hell" when they kept going back to that one story about the house burning down. like they tried so fucking hard to make that something but it was so god damn boring. couldnt tell u a single actual plot event in the series i was there for teh short horror stories and even those were worse than most short scp entries. like let alone the awful racism and shit in some of those, its just bad horror.
hoenstly weird pull but the writing reminds me a lot of john darnelles writing? like not his music his BOOKS. where he tries VERY VERY hard to write this scary thing with soo many looping threads and awesome plot beats and all of them fall on their face so hard it becomes a fucking slog. like its just actively shit writing. thats tma to me. its written by people who think theyre writing the next house of leaves when its just some fucking cheapo 4chan one sentence horror shit.
and like all of this? on a plot they admitted at one point (dont ask me for a souce i dont care enough btw sorry) they changed the plans of the series to keep fucking uh. the annoying one the boring one the one that people try and call guillermo from wwdits (another show that i could talk for ages about how much of a let down boring it is) whatever like they kept him alive cus the dumb ship stuff . like stop hes such a boring character how did u make a character MORE boring than jon.

how do I scream and admit I’ve fallen in love with Jon Sims without embarrassingly outing my identity BAHAHAH please don’t guess who I am if I’m known as the Jon Sims simp among my mutuals I’ll CRY AHDHSHDHSNDNDJ
WAS JUST WONDERING IF YOU LIKED TMA,, I’ve been wanting to get into it for him but horror makes me squeamish 😭
(haha you're all good)
I... Like TMA by proxy?? My roommate is a huge fan (like listened to the whole show through multiple times fan) and I know many things about it because of it.
I did listen to the first season. But I also skipped episodes - did some episodes where I only read the transcript, and had some episodes that I started and never finished because they scared me.
I am NOT big on horror, so after carefully tiptoeing through the first season I decided not to finish the show 😅 it was just a bit too much for me.
If you are squeamish about it but still want to listen I will say- the transcripts have CWs for each episode so I read those before I listened (or decided not to listen) to each episode, and for me, reading the transcripts did help for episodes that would have scared or grossed me out too much.
But I did like the show's concept even though the horror elements were a bit much for me, and there's mysterys and things that connect between episodes that you never expect to come back up so I did love that, and the characters are great
That's all to say, if you like the characters then you should give it a try. Maybe read the CWs for each episode if you're a bit squeamish with horror
Anyway this was very long I'm sorry I'm incapable of being straight to the point lol

Horror Recs for Magnus Fans, Part the Second
Last time I did this I was assuming that anyone who was listening to a horror podcast already knew some horror, but I have since learned that this is not the case, so there are a few more classics in here, as well as some more of my faves.
For anyone and everyone who listens to TMA: Sarah Monette's Kyle Murchison Booth stories, many (though not all) of which are collected in The Bone Key. Queer information professional would very much like for ghosts and monsters to leave him alone, does not get what he wants; can't resist the impulse to help out people who are more fucked over than him anyway. I love Booth so much, he deserves much better things than he gets.
For Web stans: Blindsight by Peter Watts, a sci-fi horror novel about free will and consciousness. Lydia Nicholas named this as one of her favorite books in the first Assistant's Round Table; I respect her for it, but I read this once and it gave me an existential crisis. Highly recommended, but make sure you've got a palate cleanser.
For jonelias fans and/or fans of the Corruption: Candyman (1992). With bonus folklore & urban legend meta! Kissing bees into your (potential) lover's mouth in order to convince them to become a murderous spirit of vengeance just like you! "All you have left is my desire for you"!!! It's extremely sexy, is what I'm saying, in all the best ways. (Trigger warnings for violence against children and a fair amount of gore, in addition to the aforementioned bees.)
If you love the no-holds-barred social commentary of season five: The Ballad of Black Tom by Victor LaValle. No, I will not shut up about this book until absolutely everyone in the world has read it. It's short! You could read it in an afternoon! This is Lovecraft's "The Horror at Red Hook" from the point of view of a black musician and hustler who's hired to help out with the ritual, and it's incredible. (If you're enjoying Lovecraft Country, absolutely do not miss this.)
If you miss the standalone statements of season one and two: the works of the early 20th century cosmic horror and ghost story writers: M.R. James, Algernon Blackwood, Arthur Machen. Machen has a tendency to get pretty eugenics-y, and they're all either misogynistic or don't have women in their stories at all, but goddamn do they do atmosphere. ("The Magnus Archives" is named after James's "Count Magnus," Jonny's favorite M.R. James story.)
For Stranger fans and those who love unexplained mysteries: The Twisted Ones by T. Kingfisher, a Southern horror (not a Gothic) about a woman who goes to clean out her abusive grandmother's house to sell it only to find that there are things other than his wife that her grandfather was afraid of, and for good reason. Features hot competent neighbors, extremely practical reactions to terrible monsters, and a Very Good Dog (the dog does not die).
For Lonely bitches: "The Horla" by Guy de Maupassant, the story I use to describe my depression to people. That's a pretty good content warning, honestly.
If you loved the "Am I still human?" plotline: The Monster of Elendhaven by Jennifer Giesbrecht, a grotesque little novella about monsters in (dysfunctional) love. I'm a bit iffy on the ending, but honestly landing the ending of horror is so tricky that I'll almost never discount something just because I'm iffy on the ending. The body horror and emotional repression throughout make up for it.
If you crave the supernatural adventure series starring Gerry Keay: The Sandman Slim series by Richard Kadrey - modern noir, so gritty you can feel it in your teeth, featuring all kinds of monsters, demons, curses, and narrowly-averted apocalypses. Not as misogynistic as noir can get, but it is noir so there's definitely a bit of that (but definitely not as misogynistic as Jim Butcher). Trigger warnings all over the place; this is B-movie horror in book form.
For Distortion fans: The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson. Bears almost no resemblance to the Netflix series of the same name, or any of the movies based on it; this is a twisty psychological novel with a profoundly unreliable narrator and a lot of repressed queerness. Michael/Helen would be right at home in Hill House. (Content warning for suicidality.)
If you want your horror to make you cry: El Orfanado, directed by Guillermo del Toro; a family moves into a house that used to be an orphanage, that is, of course, haunted. This is a tremendous distillation of the way that horror movies are so often centered around women not being believed, so content warning for gaslighting (and for harm to children); I saw this movie once and entire scenes are embedded in my brain in full color. (Honestly you can't go wrong with any Guillermo del Toro movies; he's fantastic.)
If you want your horror to make you cry, but make it gay: In the Flesh, two seasons of a zombie TV show tragically cut short (yes, it ends on a cliffhanger, I’m sorry). Uses zombies as a metaphor for homophobia, but also includes actual queer people. Content warning for small-town-typical homophobia and tragic gays. Please come yell with me about Simon Monroe, I love him so much.
For Slaughter fans: The Shining by Stephen King - look, look, I know. He's not great. He needs an editor. The movie is all kinds of fucked up. But this book is one of the most raw, personal horror stories I've ever read, and it's got an excellent combination of supernatural influence and real-life mundane fear of addiction and personal weakness that really grabs you by the intestines. Again, an iffy ending, but it's worth it for the slow descent into paranoia and madness.
If you just want to try to find some authors to read: The Borderlands anthology series, paperbacks from the height of the 80s horror boom; there are so many different kinds of stories in here that I can pretty much guarantee you that you won't like some of them but you might well find something new to fall in love with. A lot of these writers are out of print but readily available at used bookstores or for pennies on Amazon.
As always, let me know if you liked any of these or if you have a specific need: it is no longer my job to recommend books and media to people but it is still my very favorite thing to do and I will be obnoxious about it forever

What is the archive crab???? please I need to know I can't find anything about anywhere I am so confused
Ok I can't find the original post rn but basically back in 2019(?) someone who hadn't listened to tma made a post about what they thought the show was about based on their dash. And one of the things they mentioned with complete sincerity and confidence was the giant crab that lived in the archives. So a bunch of tma fans reblogged it like "?? What giant crab what are u talking about" op goes "you know, the giant archives crab" and everyone goes "what" and op is like "yeah the archives crab" and everyone else is like "no absolutely not that. That's not. No" and on and on and eventually it is discovered that op had once seen a fanart of poor baby Jon's mr spider encounter, and had assumed the giant spider legs coming out of the door were actually crab legs, and concluded that there was a giant crab in tma that lived in the archives and haunted the main cast throughout the run of the show. It was a very funny misunderstanding and I miss the archives crab memes to this very day

The final Web!Martin evidence list
Now that canon is done, and we’ve got word of god confirmation that Web!Martin wasn’t complete nonsense, I decided to go back to my lil chronological evidence list and actually clean it up a bit, delete parts that in hindsight weren't all that indicative, and put everything in a slightly more readable format. (Obligatory disclaimer that i don’t and never did believe or advocate for some kind of evil web!martin, and that I'm not intending to connect a moral judgement to martin (or anyone else for that matter) having some of these traits)
So here: The (hopefully, please) final list with Web!Martin Evidence! Presented in order of importance, according to. me
The final (hopefully) Web!Martin evidence list
(In order from most to least obvious)
Spiders
I mean, it’s called the Web. TMA reiterates quite a few times that Martin liked spiders. Sometimes it IS that easy.
MAG022: Martin: "I like spiders. Big ones, at least. Y’know, y’know the ones you can see some fur on; I actually think they’re sort of cute -"
MAG038: | Sasha: "A spider?" Jon: "Yeah. I tried to kill it…" [...] Sasha: [Chuckles] "Well, I won’t tell Martin." Jon: "Oh, god. I don’t think I could stand another lecture on their importance to the ecosystem."
MAG059: Jon: "I have done my best to prevent Martin reading this statement in too much detail. I have no interest in having another argument about spiders."
MAG079: Jon: "Apparently, biologically, his account of the spiders doesn’t make any sense according to Martin."
MAG197: Martin: “What? Because I like spiders? Well, used to.”
Lies and subterfuge
Martin is able to use lying and subterfuge to achieve his goals, and is called manipulative a few times.
Lies:
MAG022: Martin: "[He] became slightly more co-operative after I lied to him and told him that one of the upstairs residents had buzzed me in."
MAG056: Martin: "I lied on my CV."
MAG158: Peter: “But you said –” Martin: “Honestly, I mostly just said what I thought you wanted to hear.”
MAG164: Jon: "You – I actually believed you!"
MAG189: Martin: “Sorry. Sorry, John. Not sure how much everything up there actually understood what was going on. But, y’know, I didn’t want to take any chances so it made sense to… um…” Jon: “Put on a show?” Martin: “Yeah, basically, more or less.”
MAG191: Martin: "That's not true." Arun: "Liar!"
Subterfuge:
The plan in 118, which revolved around convincing Elias that Martin was only “acting out”, to create a distraction for Melanie. (Also compare the way he evades giving a straight answer here with the way Annabelle talks in 196.)
Working with Peter in s4 under false pretenses, to distract him from Jon and eventually try to learn what Peter wanted.
Manipulation accusations:
These, I know, are somewhat contentious, since it’s mostly villains saying this to him. I’m still including them, since
1): From a media analysis standpoint, being mentioned 3 times is a sign to pay attention, even when it may not be the full truth.
2): I only see it as describing Martin’s behaviour in the previous points, not as a moral judgement; Especially since he almost always ‘manipulates’ people in positions of power over him.
Still, if it bothers anyone, feel free to ignore these.
MAG138: Martin: "That’s it? No, no monologue, no mind games? You love manipulating people!" Elias: "That makes two of us."
MAG186: Martin: “I can be a real manipulative prick, you know that?” Also Martin: “Oh yeah.”
MAG196: Annabelle: “Because you always managed to get what you wanted through smiles and shrugs and stammerings that weren’t nearly as awkward as they seemed.” [SMALL SOUND OF MARTIN’S CONCESSION TO THE POINT] Martin: “Point taken.”
The Lonely/the Web
The Lonely and the Web sometimes affect Martin to similar degrees.
In season 3, when Martin is getting used to reading statements for the first time, most of them leave him emotionally affected: MAG084, MAG088, MAG090,
MAG095: Martin: “S-S-Statement… done.” [HEAVY BREATHING & TREMBLING AS MARTIN STEADIES HIMSELF] “I don’t like recording these. There. I-I said it.”,
MAG098: Martin: [Panting] “End of statement.” [Deep breath] “I, um, I think I might need to sit down. Oh. Yeah, I am. Right. I don’t, uh, I’m not really sure if these are actually getting easier or harder. I mean I don’t feel –”
Only the last two statements he reads are remarkably easier. This might be a hint that Martin is just getting used to reading them, but the quote from MAG098 seems to contradict that. Either way, it’s likely not a coincidence that those last two happen to be the Lonely and the Web:
MAG108: Martin: “Statement ends.” (exhale) “That wasn’t so bad…”
MAG110: Martin: “Statement ends.” [...] “I mean, I think it sounds like a Jurgen Leitner book. About spiders. Hm. Good John didn’t have to read this one, anyway. I know he’s not a fan. Although, this one wasn’t too bad, actually! I – yeah. Anyway.”
In season 5, there are two powers’ Domains that actually affected Martin mentally, as opposed to only physically: the Lonely’s, in 170 (and arguably 186), and, depending on your interpretation, in 172, when Martin went exploring without knowing why he did so.
Proximity
Martin investigates a lot of the Web statements during season 1 to 3 (in other words, when the archive team still researches statements). The only ones he isn’t mentioned in during this period are MAG019 and MAG020, when he’s being harrassed by worms, and MAG081, which Jon records by himself outside of the institute.
Most notably, he’s the one who discovered the statement in MAG114, ‘Cracked Foundations’, which is the one statement in the entire show that sets up the interdimensional properties of HTR.
The Web!Lighter passed through Martin's hands first, before he gave it to Jon.
Similarly, Annabelle mostly spoke to Martin in season 5, despite most other Avatars usually focusing on Jon.
Aesthetics
Apart from the above obviously Web related areas, there are some other aesthetics which are mentioned in connection to both the Web and Martin, throughout canon.
These are describing the Web;
These are describing Martin.
Tapes:
Martin is the only character to treat the tape recorders as friends - any other character is either indifferent, or treats them as enemies.
MAG039: Martin: "I think the tapes have a sort of… low-fi charm."
MAG154 Martin: “Oh. Hi. Hello again.” … (small laugh) “Sorry pal, false alarm this time.”
MAG156 Martin: “Mm? Oh.” [HE LAUGHS, GENTLY.] “Yeah. (rustling paper) I was going to read one. Hate for you to miss it!” [SHORT, FORCED LAUGH, AS HE FLAPS THE STATEMENT AROUND.]
MAG170 Martin: “Oh. Oh, hello. What’s this? Wow, retro! What are you up to, little buddy; just – listening? That’s okay. It’s nice to have someone to talk to.”
MAG190 Jon: "[The tapes] seem to like [Martin]."
Retro:
MAG069: Statement: “I only saw Annabelle Cane once during this period. She wasn’t hard to pick out. She dressed like a vintage clothing store exploded on her, and her short bleach-blonde hair stood out sharply against dark skin.”
MAG160: Jon: “Anyways, don’t tell me the phonebox down there doesn’t appeal to your retro aesthetic.” Martin: “It – might. Maybe.”
MAG163: Annabelle/the Web callying Martin via an old payphone: [ A PHONE RINGS. IT’S NOT THE TINNY, ELECTRONIC SOUND OF A CELLPHONE – NO, THIS IS A TRUE, HEAVY, CLASSIC RING.] Martin: “Uh. John? Uh, J, John – the, uh, payphone that’s – here, for some reason – it’s ringing?”
Hatred of burns:
MAG067: Jack Barnabas’ statement: “I looked up and noticed within the corner of the room, where there had been a spider’s web this morning, there was just a faint wisp of smoke.” “Another held a bag that seemed to be full of candles, while a third had a clear plastic container filled with hundreds of tiny spiders.”
MAG139: Statement by member of Cult of the Lightless Flame: “The Mother of Puppets has always suffered at our hand; all the manipulation and subtle venom in the world means nothing against a pure and unrestrained force of destruction and ruin.” Agnes burned down Hilltop Road.
MAG145: The Web ties Gertrude to Agnes, stopping the Desolation’s ritual (the only Power whose ritual the Web is known to have prevented).
MAG167: Gertrude enlists Agnes’/the Desolation’s help in order to burn her assistant Emma, who was Web aligned.
MAG169: Martin: "Look, I just – don’t want to get burned, all right? It’s, it’s like my least favorite pain ever. [...] I, I legitimately hate burns, alright? They’re, they’re awful, and they scar horribly, and they just – it – it just makes me sick; I, I hate it. Hate it!"
Phrasing:
MAG039: Martin: "I’m trapped here. It’s like I can’t… move on and the more I struggle, the more I’m stuck. [...] It's just that whatever web these statements have caught you in, well, I’m there too. We all are, I think."
MAG079: Martin's poem: "The threads of people walking, living, lovi–"
MAG117: Martin: "This last couple of years, I’ve always been running, always hiding, caught in someone else’s trap, but, but now it’s my trap, and, well, I think it’ll work. I know, I know it’s not exactly intricate, but it felt good leaving my own little web. Oh, oh, Christ, I hope John doesn’t actually listen to these. “Good lord, is Martin becoming some sort of spider person?” No, John, it’s an expression, chill out! Besides, spiders are fine. I mean, yes, people are scared of them, obviously, but actual spiders, they just want to help you out with flies."
MAG167: Jon: “Methinks the Spider dost protest too much.” Martin: “Jon –” Jon: “Joking! Just joking.”
Personality:
How applicable these are depends heavily on how you interpret Martin's own personality, so your mileage may vary.
MAG008: Statement: “Nobody ever said a word against Raymond himself, though, who was by all accounts a kind and gentle soul [...]”
MAG123: Jon: "The Web does seem to have a preference for those who prefer not to assert themselves."
MAG147: Annabelles statement: "I discovered a deep and enduring talent inside myself for lying. [...] My manipulations were not intricate, but they were far beyond what was expected of a child my age, and I have always believed that the key to manipulating people is to ensure that they always under- or overestimate you. Never reveal your true abilities or plans."
Word of God and Annabelle
I kinda wanted to ‘prove’ that Web!Martin had quite a bit of evidence to back it up, hence this header being last. But of course, in this post-canon world, there are a few lines that most obviously confirm the theory:
MAG197: Martin is Web enough to be able to read the 'vibrations', like Annabelle, and see Jon and Basira (the latter being especially notable, as he hadn't known she was there beforehand): [CHITTERING, BUZZING AND HIGH-PITCHED SQUEALS CHANGE CADENCE] Martin: "Wait… Wait, hang on, is that him?" Annabelle: "Yes. I guess you’re better with the Web than we thought." Martin: "And – Wait, ha– No, uh… is that… Basira? He – He’s got Basira with him!" Annabelle: "Yes."
Season 5 Q&A part 2: Jonny: “Essentially, it was fascinating looking at the fandom and, like, the Web!Martin believers, because what they were doing was correctly picking up on hints dropped in the early seasons that were later, like, not exactly abandoned, but it was much more like, ‘Well, no, he does have like aspects of The Web to him, but he is moreover The Lonely.’ And that came about very… very organically, really. Because throughout Season 3 and going into Season 4, we had this conversation and we were like, ‘No, actually he's like-” Alex: “‘It can't be, it cannot be, it must be the other way round’ Yeah.”
(Note that they say “throughout season 3 and going into season 4,” which likely means that season 1, season 2, and at least part of season 3, aka half of the entire show, were written with Web!Martin as an intentional possibility.)
If you read all that, thanks so much! Obviously, Web!Martin never really came to fruition, so it's fine if you still don't like it. This is just a post explaining where it was coming from, at least for me and the other theorists I've spoken to.

Y’all please stop marketing TMA to new fans as a romance/based on its romance. I adore jonmartin so much but they’re really not the selling point of the show, and now that we’re at the point where new fans are getting upset/angry/claiming it’s ‘bury your gays’ when they 170+ episodes in look around and realise what genre they’re in because they listened because of shippy fanart without noticing the ‘tragedy’ aspect, it’s legitimately creating hurt for those people. Obviously don’t dissuade people from listening because it’s a phenomenal show but just make sure they know what it is? And if they’re in it for the romance purely, maybe reccomend a different podcast that focuses on that more/gives them a definite happy ending as opposed to making them go through that many episodes for it to be a tragic ending that will annoy/distress them

Other works from the cast of TMA
The magnus archives cast is filled to the brim with talented creatives with over pieces of work and more people should know about them.
First the obvious: rusty quill makes amazing stuff! MAG is magnificent but more people should get to know their other stuff. Im slowly getting through rusty quill gaming and its delightful. If you want to hear Lydia Nicholas (Melanie king) be a stabby knife woman again, listen to Ben Meredith's (Elias) soothing voice without having to simp over a literal murderer and Alex (Martin, director, big boss man) being chaotic this is just the place. I also cant recommend ehough listening to one-shots special episodes, my favourite one is when Sasha (Georgie) gms Helen (Laverne, Melanies therapist), Lydia (Melanie) and Lowrie (editor) as they play a very cheotic and quite horny rpg about being stuck on a cruise ship to Bermuda. The game is by Macguffin and co, Jonny's and Sasha's game company that i will talk about in depth further in the post.
Stella firma is another rusty quill podcast. It is made and stared by the Meredith brothers. I have yet to listen to alot of it but it includes tons of gender fuckery and chaos.
I haven't listened to any of outlanders yet, but i believe it shall be great like everything RQ makes.
RQ also has "Rusty quill streams" that streams in twitch and you can also find on YouTube. It is hosted and stars Mike leBeau (the iconic tim stoker) Nico ( vocal editor, gabe us the kiss). The streams are hilarious and make me want to get into gaming, it is also a great way to support RQ and also get to see content from other of their creators. Last week featured Anil helping Mike playing through dream daddy and it was glorious.
I would be surprised if any of the hardcore TMA fans haven't at least heard of the mechanisms. But just in case:
The mechanisms were a steampunk-cabaret-neo folk band that were active in 2010-2020. The premis of the band is that each of its members plays a mechanism, an immortal cyborg and they all travel together through the universe, singing and telling stories about the tragedies they encounter. Non other than the beloved Jonny Simms was there lead singer, Jonny de'vil, a space cowboy from new Texas. other familier people were band mates aswell, Frank Voss (Basira) is Ashes O'Riley, an arsonists with a bass guitar, Jessica law (nikola orsinov) as the toy soldier who sings and plays the mandolin, ukulele and a variety of other instruments. Tim ledsam (jorden the extinguisher) plays gunpowder tim, the allmother of gender envy that plays the guitar. The Band has four concept albums that tell full tales:
"once upon a time in space" that is a reiteration of classic fairy tales but with lesbians in space.
"Ulysses dies at dawn" that is based in greek mythology and is bluesy and jazzy and wonderful
"High noon over Camelot" which is rooted in the tales of king Arthur and the round table, but as a wild west spaghetti movie of sorts in space. It has a main trans character and i lovely poly relationship that i have yet to see better represented in other media.
And "the bifrost incident", based on Norse mythology in a "murderer on the Orient express" setting, lesbians in space and a non binary main character.
Other then that they have two albums that are made out of short stories, many of them a backstory for fhe characters named "tales to be told" and "tales to be told II". They also have a standalone song about frankinstein and a live recording of there final show, that includes a few new songs, lovely banter and a revision if some ot their older works.
I cannot recommend listening to them enough.
Macguffin and co is Jonny and Sasha's game company. They design micro settings for RPG that some are free and some are patreon exclusive. I have yet to play any of the games myself but read through all the ones available online and listened to the acctual play podcast episodes of them ("dusk hollow pd" on MAG and "not far to Bermuda" on rqg). The settings are thought out so well and the attention for details is amazing. Jonny and sasha also stream on twitch regularly and the streams are a delight.
Sasha also has a podcast with the one and only Jessica law called "Jane austentations" in which they watch together all the film adaptations of Jane Austen novels and review them. Sasha knows an awful lot about Jane Austen, Jessica doesn't, but she has a surprising amount of knowledge about period accurate plants. The podcast itself is hilarious and Sasha's and Jessica's dynamic is great. Sasha also runs a blog under the same name were you can find other reviews.
Speaking of Jessica law, she is a great musician and i love her music so much. All of her work is available on Spotify and on bandcamp, she has a concept album called "lovers and fighters" which is a masterpiece in my opinion and five other albums. Her storytelling abilities blow my mind every time and her voice is beautiful.
Fay Roberts, the voice behind daisy is a poet and spoken word artist. Their work is so good! I cant explain how wonderful it is. They made " the selkie: a song if many waters" that is a poetry collection/ story that they wrote and preformed on bandcamp, and its one of my favourite works if litreture ever, it is heartbreaking and mystical and beautiful and makes me sob very easily. They also have quite a bit of spoken word poetry published online, both on bandcamp and on YouTube and i can't recommend enough for you to go listening to it.
Please go check out these works! They are all a delight and you should go and support the wonderful people behind them!
Also, feel free to add to this post and also tell me if I missed anything.

Consider: TMA as an Early Cult Classic TV Show
TMA but it’s a late-80s-early-90s cult classic TV show, like X-Files with the podcast as a reboot. The story stays pretty much the same but a different aesthetic, treatment of storylines and characters, and fandom reaction. Basically:
• More period typical questionable fashion choices. Michael is dressed like a bus seat 100% of the time. Melanie is a full-on punk with a public access TV show.
• The cassettes are more “hippity with the kids” than “charmingly retro” and Martin does spoken word poetry, which often opens episodes up.
• Peter Lukas is played by some famous TV actor from the 60s.
• Elias is the original fandom sexyman instead of a recent addition.
• The archival investigation elements are more integral to the plot because technology isn’t quite there yet, so it feels less like an anthology and more like a monster of the week kind of thing.
• The special effects... they did what they could on TV show’s budget but it’s no Jurassic Park and doesn’t really hold up over time.
• Jon and Martin don’t have a canonical relationship but rumors have gone around for years that both actors supported it (think Garak and Bashir) which lead to a thriving online shipping community.
• Do Not Archive becomes a common fandom term for “If you’re part of the production don’t look at this” and is widely used regardless of fandom
• The Show gets rebooted as a podcast with the entire original main cast on board to reprise their characters, which gets a lot of media attention.
• When the podcast reboot happens and JonMartin is canon a bunch of new fans hop on, with the older generation nitpicking difference. There are several thinkpiece articles on cross medium adaptation and the reboot epidemic.
• There’s big fandom controversy because Basira was the only POC character in the main cast of the TV show, but new podcast listeners start headcanoning the characters as POC. The whole situation is made even more confusing by the cast reprising their roles. Tumblr is in absolute chaos for weeks and the tag is never free of the discourse again.
• Buzzfeed refers to it as a “workplace black comedy” in their TMA quizzes and listicles which somehow leads to people comparing it to Buffy the Vampire Slayer more often than the X-Files.
• A generation of lesbians grew up with either Daisy or Basira as their gay awakening.
• Lots of cats named The Admiral.
• “You’re a true 90s kid if you care more about which entity you’re an avatar of than which Hogwarts house you’re in.”
• So many Comic-Con panels. The one where the reboot was announced went viral because they left the stage empty at the beginning, micced a tape recorder, and played the trailer (which was mostly drowned out by screams when the crowd heard Jon’s voice).
Please help me expand the show part, this has consumed me.

Hey hi!
if you look at the TMA fan art, you'll see lots of fluff, shitposts, and memes. If that makes you want to start listening, that's great! However, TMA is a tragedy and horror podcast. It goes heavy into themed of depression, abandonment, grief, paranoia, cults, and more. the podcast itself does have many happy, fun, and/or fluffy parts, but the majority of it is, to some extent, dark.
People make fanart/fic to compensate for what canon does not have. This is why happier, fluffy shows will be filled with angst in the fan base. This is why darker shows will be filled with fluff in the fan base.
I know how you might want to know who the characters are, and TMA is a great podcast, but please don't go into it thinking it's a happy, romantic plot. it isn't.
