I'm sorry but at this point how can anyone honestly think "Chester" is trying to warn Sam away from the Magnus Institute? The red canary case did seen like a warning on a surface level but it was also the thing that got him looking into the institute in the first place. I think someone or something knew enough about Sam to know he would immediately start looking into the Magnus Institute if it just happened to come up on his first day working in the creepy story mines.
It also, for the record, knew enough about Gwen to send her exactly the piece of info she needed so go after Lena. And knew enough about Lena to send the exact thing that would get her to promote Gwen.
It knew Colin was the only person who knew they are being listened to. It knew enough about Colin to know that he was the one person who might know enough about the program to pose a threat. And it knew how to push his buttons to drive him to the point where he would be forced to leave.
It even seemed to know which voice would unnerve Celia the most. And possibly gave a statement connected to her background/ origins in this universe. This probably made her more open to looking into things with Sam, further egging on his search.
Something is continuing to feed Sam tidbits about the Institute. It's stringing him along and pulling him in. When he was ready to give it up, here comes "Chester" unprompted with a new Magnus institute related case. And now guess who's GOING TO THE DAMN BURNED DOWN RUINS!? these are not warnings, they are deliberate bread crumbs leading Sam exactly where someone wants him to be.
Meanwhile everyone else is being fucked with to some degree, with the exception of Alice. Although her "I do not see it" powers might make her immune.
None of this is an accident! Strings are being pulled! We just don't know why or by who. Are the Archives Boys really in the computer and trying to lead Sam to the Institute for some unknown reason? Is there perhaps some other, possibly malevolent force that's stolen their voices and memories and is using them to draw Sam in for its own unsavory purposes? Only time will tell!
All I know is, the only one trying to warn Sam about anything is Alice and he has for the most part not been listening.

Gonna start listening to Malevolent tonight
Tumblr media
episode one is coming up
What I know going into this:
There's a guy called Arthur with a guy in his head
The voice is new
The voice isn't human
The voice lived in a book
Something something murder maybe? And like, right away, somebody dies too
Profanity? 🤔
There is an interactive element to this, in which apparently a bunch of people got to vote on what happened next. As someone coming into it now, who can't change anything about what's happened, I get to judge these people's thought processes instead.
My face if their decisions intrigue me:
Tumblr media
My face if they do not:
Tumblr media
What I am blindly guessing:
Voice likes murder, Arthur is not as into it
Arthur has an office job or something? Something where he sits a lot
Arthur would like this voice to not be in his head
The voice would also like to not be in Arthur's head
What I am guessing after using this as a hint:
Tumblr media
Mystery show
Arthur does sit a lot
Magic mystery
Arkham = either Asylum or Horror 🤔
Arthur brings the Dark World to him instead of going to it
Whatever happens in this, it could've all been avoided if this guy slept in that morning, and that knowledge will haunt this guy until the last episode
Update: and here's a link to the full thread so no one has to dig through the reblogs 💖

if you're gonna complain about a creator make sure your receipts are good for it, I guess? here are a few facts about Harlan Guthrie, creator of Malevolent:
more than 2 years ago he was asked on tumblr if all of the ship art he was reblogging was meant to imply anything about canon and he replied that he'd stop so as to not confuse anyone
less than a year ago he was interviewed on Hello From the Hallowoods (a queer podcast) and basically said "that ship is good for fanfic and fanart, but the canon I'm writing is for the developing friendship of a man who was raised to be stoic who ruined everything good in his life and a manipulative, murderous (male) monster learning how to be better people through helping each other deal with their emotions and flawed behaviors, because I was raised with toxic ideals about manhood so this is what I want to explore"
sometime before september '22 he wrote and performed "Big Bear", a love song from the (cowboy, male, supporting) character he plays to the (cowboy, male, main) character in the podcast WOE.BEGONE he's in a canonical relationship with (which is wonderfully depicted), which was put in the season 7 finale (season 13 starts next week, they are still together but it's about to get even more delicious angst due to [SPOILERS])
no idea if he ever heard of the term fujoshi since that's not a term I've ever seen or heard used in any fandom for the creators sphere he's in or (queer) (indie) podcasts fandoms at all, not even from fans who are also in anime/manga fandoms. but he is aware enough of the phenomenon "fans who like to ship men non-canonically because the canon friendship is compelling" to make a single joke about it in a non-canon meta-humor christmas special; subjective how it comes across, apparently, but if you take it from me he was laughing with his fans, and also somewhat at himself.
I recommend Malevolent to horror podcasts fans, particularly to those who read Lovecraft; WOE.BEGONE to time-travel action/psychological-thriller fans who also love queer cowboys and themes of power (and its abuse) and agency (or lack thereof); Hello From the Hallowoods is recommended to fans of the other 2 so I'm gonna start that once my current listening is caught up, I'm told to prepare for forest cryptids and good storytelling.

Unfortunately I now deeply believe I need to takea 48 hour rest from listening to podcasts because I had a very convincing dream where I was kayne from malevolent and having a very fun time torturing arthur by dropping him into a universe where faroe had survived to adulthood and I'm assuming in this one he was either dead or absent considering she absolutely did not recognize him and went "who is this weird blind dude".
And it panned out to me in a body that was VERY much not mine with another person who's appearance was hazy sitting next to me, and a dog bear man person who was apparently very close to me because his head was in my lap and I was giving him scritches.
Dog bear man started laughing and asking me if I could help the man out some, as he already 'had most of the puzzle', and dog bear man who's name I don't know said he was rooting for him so much he'd even give me a few years of servitude for me to lend the man a hand.
Now THIS is where it gets super fucking weird and out of character which means my brain switched gears or something while maintaining visuals into a very weird mess. I was thinking, about how if he asked, I would help the man out. I would sabotage my own game because this man was giving me a lopsided grin and laughing with his head in my lap while I asked, and then it hurt, because i knew in a fee short years he would be elderly and infirm (exact thought process quote!!!) While I would be young forever if I wanted to.
I doubled down, still scratching under his chin and the top of his head, and shot him. While I was crying the third person put his soul in some kind of mirror and the dream started to flash back to the three of us running some heist on a mansion where we had gotten back the mirror, but my alarm went off before I could tell whether or not he wanted to be put in the mirror, or if it would have been something he hated. Both were equally likely
Now this is wildly out of character for kayne malevolent who I do not think would do any of the second half. I think the crying bit was just my brain Making Things Up however props to Mt subconscious for opening this random side plot with the torturing of John and Arthur. I guess. I woke up incredibly confused at five am and got up fir the day. It was very fun actually to drop ppl in Situations

AITA for asking my brother for a favor?
I (28M) and my brother (28M) used to be incredibly close as children but near the end of highschool, we got into a huge fight when he sabotaged a huge opportunity I had because he wanted the both of us to go sailing after graduation instead of letting me go off and be my own person. He left home after that and we hadn't spoken to each other since for nearly ten years.
Since then I've had to work incredibly hard to achieve what I could have had if my brother hadn't destroyed everything for me. I'm proud to say that I managed to get everything I wanted to have in life and have been happily conducting research in a small lumber town. That is, until I made the incredibly stupid decision to partner up with someone who had only malevolent intentions. I had no idea at the time, as he acted as if he were my friend. We would play chess together and he told me that he wanted to help me with my research since he 'chooses one brilliant mind each century' to inspire.
As you might have guessed, it was all a lie. My muse was a monster and I was a damn fool for ever believing him. The project he was helping me work on turned out to be something that could literally bring about the end of the world and yes, I mean literally. I panicked and began to do everything I could to fix my mistake but I had opened myself up so much to my partner that he began to terrorize me almost constantly. Even sleep became far too risky.
This is when I called my brother. Even if we hadn't spoken in so long, I felt he was the only person in the world left that I could trust. My plan was to have him hide my research so that my partner couldn't get to it and I could focus on stopping him once and for all. I even told my brother that he could go sailing, like he always wanted to! But for some reason he just got angry with me and called me selfish! He started going on and on about how he had a mullet and that I ruined his life as if he wasn't the one who ruined my life. As far as I'm concerned, he ruined his own life!
I'm not proud of it but everything quickly devolved after that and we began fighting with each other. It culminated in me severely injuring my brother, by accident. I immediately stopped fighting and tried to apologize- I may have been angry with him but I would never want to hurt him like that- but my brother wouldn't hear any of it and promptly retaliated. Now I've lost everything and I don't think I'll ever get any of it back.
I'm still incredibly angry at my brother. If he had just listened to me and taken my research then none of this would have happened. My main focus is on destroying my partner once and for all now, but sometimes I can't help wondering if there was anything that could have been done differently, or if we were both just doomed to these fates. So, AITA?

for the character asks: pickman sangfielle and/or any malevolent guy of ur choosing
well if u insist!!!!
Pickman
Sexuality Headcanon: i do get very aro vibes from pickman and i think in a lot of cases she's functionally ace but. she sure did fuck that old woman! so i guess she's aro train-god-sexual lesbian. good for her Gender Headcanon: i mean i know this is the autism vibes but she truly does seem like the kind of person who's only doing woman because that's what she started as and knows how to do. she's still fairly cut off from traditional expressions of gender because of the autism and the Train Trauma but at the same time it's her version of womanhood and she's kind of spitefully attached to it now, even tho it's in a kind of nb way. A ship I have with said character: That Old Woman (shoutouts to chantilly scathe!!!) A BROTP I have with said character: duvall for that time he manifested into a scene he wasn't in to defend her honour A NOTP I have with said character: alekest i guess? i mean he did that himself tho. anyone else i mean. is it really friends at the table if the player characters don't all have weird unethical polycule vibes? A random headcanon: she seems like one of those people who can't cook for shit unless u give her a recipe with exact instructions and proportions and then even if she's completely unfamiliar with the technique she's suddenly a 5star chef. she thinks this is normal and everyone is like this and is baffled when colette gets moony-eyed at her over it General Opinion over said character: i am picking petals off flowers saying 'she loves me, she loves me not' i am doodling her name in my notebook i am cheerleading on the sidelines of every scene shes in i am holding her giant gun for her in case she needs it
Kayne Malevolent (i would say sorry but u did this to urself)
Sexuality Headcanon: i mean as far as canon goes he seems less concerned with gender and more concerned with whoever he doesn't consider boring. i could go ahead and just decide he's gay because he flirted with both john and arthur (not to mention the fruitiness) but that's too easy. if women were legal in malevolent he'd be uncomfortably horny about them too, i know it Gender Headcanon: whatever he's doing he's doing it a lot. A ship I have with said character: i mean given his whole deal he seems fairly impervious to like. intimacy. but i think it's fun when he gets all marina and the diamonds homewrecker in jarthur's already unstable marriage A BROTP I have with said character: well it would be lovely if there were sufficient characters in the actual show for him to actually have any kind of friendship with. or more likely affectionate rivalry considering how unpleasant he is as a person A NOTP I have with said character: i mean i don't know of anyone who's shipping him with anyone in particular but the only other recurring characters are larson yellow and the butcher and uh. all of them. less the butcher cus can u imagine the combination of fucked up hedonist trickster god + catholic guilt but still. the vibes are fucking rancid A random headcanon: this is mostly just taking the trope and running with it but i like to think he operates under fae rules, like, technically can't lie and technically has to keep his promises, so is like. extremely careful how he words things and what he avoids saying and leaves implied. bonus points cus he talks so fast u can't really tell he's doing it unless ur paying attention. yes i realise this is the third character in a row i'm headcanoning as a beaurocrat but listen it's my autism i get to project it General Opinion over said character: he's like a budget version of the outsider if the outsider listened to the orion experience. we love a fucked up trickster god and of course we love a bisexual covered in blood but yknow what else i love? characters who show up often enough to actually learn anything about them at all.

Keeping an ear out for the High One (and other deities’) advice: a crash course!
Tumblr media
Oðinn is known for his wisdom and knowledge, and often manifests himself in the form of omens. However, he is also famously deceiving: he will send you puzzle pieces and watch you try to put them together. His advice comes in handy in numerous predicaments, but it requires some sorting out. Understanding the High One’s messages often comes at a price, and I believe he will send you trials and setbacks if the lesson doesn’t sink in. Not because he is malevolent! In my opinion, he puts obstacles on our way so that we can learn by ourselves, just like he has. In order to help you guys figure out Oðinn’s messages, I’ve boiled down the basics to three major habits which I myself seek to develop. These apply to a lot of other deities, but I’ve chosen to illustrate them using Oðinn as an example because his messages are famously hard to decrypt! Now, everything in this post was written according to my personal beliefs and experiences with Oðinn and the Gods. The advice I give is that of a very humble polytheist, and in no way does it represent the absolute truth. Take away from it what you will, because I don’t claim to know the Gods more than any other.
Observation
Or catching any potential message
Learn about omens! I’m serious. Especially those that relate to the High One’s symbols, such as birds (crows, ravens) or wolves. If he talked to us directly, I believe he would encourage us to observe everything that surrounds us and to study it to the best of our capacities. May I add,
“The knowing guest who goes to the feast, in silent attention sits; With his ears he hears, with his eyes he watches, thus wary are wise men all.” Hávamál, stanza 7
Which is why I suggest to look at things: not only see them, but truly look at them. Observe the clouds’ movements, the grass under your feet and the feeling of the wind. Notice how people behave and try to guess why they behave so! Tune your ear in to sounds you’d never paid attention to before. Truly listen when people talk to you for sometimes, the High One will speak using their voices. Such exercises will accustom you to catch everything that goes on around you. Eventually, you will start to notice when something feels different, and identifying actual divine advice will become easier.
Discernment
Or identifying messages
I’ll go broader than just Oðinn for this step because I believe it applies to most deities. Now in my experience, divine advice often feels like its divine. You will know it in your bones. Physically, you may experience a chill or goosebumps. Time may feel like it stopped for half a second, just long enough for the actual message to sink it once you realize it is there. You might find yourself unconsciously mulling over whatever it is you have seen for the minutes or hours that follow. Yet as you’ve probably heard before, not everything is a divine sign. I think skepticism is a vital part of spirituality. People will see a bug outside and go ‘Loki’s telling me I should find work!’ or they’ll drive past a cat cafe and think ‘this is Freyja’s way of telling me I should break up with my boyfriend’. Now, I’m not saying we should constantly brush off signs as fake. My own way of looking at it is, does it really matter if they are? It isn’t necessary to try and interpret every possible sign. If a certain event reminded you of a deity and you think they might have sent you that message, then good! And if you’ve learned a valuable lesson thanks to it, then even better! Believing you’ve received a message from one of your deities, even if you’re not 100% certain of it, is harmless and even healthy. So long as you don’t take every potential message at face value. Same goes for the High One.
Application
Or interpreting the message
Time to reflect on the sign you’ve experienced! What lesson could you possibly learn from the event/the omen? If a particular message seems to arise, how can it be applied to your personal situation? Let me give an example. You’ve mysteriously lost your keys and are forced to go to your neighbor for help. They warmly invite you in their home, make you some tea and turn out a lot more pleasant than you thought they were. Thanks to this unexpected event, you could become more aware of the people around you, choose to commit yourself to your community, or simply try to not judge people with a single glance. Your eyes are drawn to a crow while you’re walking home from work, and you notice it take flight towards the sunset. The image feels strangely warm and comforting? This might be Oðinn’s way to make you notice the world around you, to tell you to breathe and enjoy a moment of tranquility. My personal opinion is that wether these were divine signs or not doesn’t matter, and there is no point trying to prove that they are either. If you learned something from them, them you can very well choose to believe they were sent by a deity because they just might be!

are you aware of malevolent or the fandom at all? i stopped following harlan a while ago bc the way he interacted with fans gave me the ick and i forgot about it for a while but. now i'm seeing *dozens* of comments from people who say he treats his fans like shit on the official discord and like. i guess im just wondering if you or anyone else has some insight on this? it just sucks bc the fandom is really getting huge and it seems like harlan is really parasocially involved in it and i feel like i can't even post about it on my own blog bc i'm worried about the reaction.
I am definitely aware of Malevolent and Harlan, at this point I would be surprised to meet someone who isn't at least a little.
this however is new to me as someone who only has interacted in passing and only engaged with his content the way I would most audio dramas I listen to. which is to say I've listened to some and chatted offhand with others.
I haven't seen very much from the discord, but I think I like a lot of people only frequent a few servers and mostly ignore the rest so that stuff wouldn't ever cross my path unless it affected someone I know personally.
that isn't to say it isn't happening, and honestly I would be interested to dig into it more because a lot of content creators and their communities have collapsed from this type of behavior (maybe not in our space, but plenty on YouTube and Twitch and beyond).
there is definitely an important conversation to be had around the parasocial relationships that our community fosters, every creator is MUCH more accessible than any other type of media I have experienced. and while that can be a good thing it can also be a really really bad thing, especially if someone with power abuses it.
I know that Malevolent and Harlan's other projects do have quite a following and it keeps growing, so this is genuinely concerning to hear and I personally want to take it very seriously if it is happening.
if anyone has stories that they want to tell in an anonymous forum, they are welcome to send them and I will put it out there.
we can also just as a group try to start a larger conversation about the ways that creator accessibility might be dangerous (for BOTH sides) and how we can think about putting safety rails in place to make sure that things cannot get out of hand.

I always felt that the lack of humor, the lack of irony and the fact that no, it's not a glimpse in the eye, it's almost like... I love the fact that someone was saying... instead of saying "Yeah we're gonna kill your babies... haha... only joking"... no, we WILL kill your babies! ...and I thought that the power of that and the strength of the lack of irony, the lack of glimpse in the eye was overwhelming in a great way and it made me - to express it in a banal way - made me really get this like "okay, this is no joke", you know... "This is serious". And I loved that, so that's how I perceived it anyway. [...]
Interviewer: "It's interesting when you're talking about black metal and the malevolence stare, and not messing around and kinda looking you dead in the eye and being quite... it's not entry-level music. It actually requires [...] there is so much complexity. A lot of people I think can't necessarily unpack it to get to the emotion and I think that's one of the problems [...] I wonder if people's ears were different in the 90s [...] Can you tell us a bit about that moment [...]norwegian black metal is a fascinating [...]what was this kind of moment like and what did it smell like and what was this world that you inhabitated at this moment.
Satyr: So a grew up in what we refer to as “the original norwegian black metal scene”. I'm one of the persons that was a part of both the musical and social circle that set the stage for what is, you know... now it's been around for 30 years or so I guess, so time flies and I guess what's the most frustrating part to me is that there are a lot of people that are very opinionated about the definition of black metal while at the same time not being there because we were so few and it's such a long time ago that, without mentioning names, there are so many bands out of this country that say "yeah we started in so and so and built from there and then we released" and I think to myself "No, you didn't". Because if you were there as you claim in your press release, I would have known [...] If they existed, we knew about them. [...] And then even worse now having people that are from a different country, from a different culture and different age group try and educate Satyricon on the definition of black metal... oh god, why do I have to listen to someone do this to me because they have no idea. The most influential person in the definition of black metal was without the shadow of a doubt Euronymous. Euronymous of Mayhem was the great ambassador for these philosophical thoughts and he was very much a salesman in the way that he would strongly exaggerate to get his points come across. So for example, a lot of things he said, you know, he didn't necessarily mean them literally but he would put them very strongly so that the message would come across, and he kept talking about - much like Edvard Munch - that it's not about being technical. It's about the feeling, it's about the atmosphere, so that's how you define black metal and he said "As long as it's dark and it's got the feeling, it's black metal". And then I remember having this conversation with him and other people back then many times but... I remember one of the conversations where it was just Euronymous and myself, I said "How far would you go?" and he said "Even some Diamanda Galas is black metal", and I said "No, that's going too far", and he said "No, no, it is", and he said "And so is some Mercyful Fate stuff" and he kept pushing and he said that "Listen, if it's got that feeling, that's what defines black metal and it's not corpse paint, speed or instrumentation. It's the feeling." So obviously I know that he was comunicating quite a few extreme examples but that was in order for his points to become clear to people, that this is really not about the bpm, it's not about corpse paint or no corpse paint, it's about that feeling, and then today we see that there are bands out there who have their spikes and their bullet belts, and they have their corpse paint and they play fast and they have their leather jackets and this and that and the instrumentation is there so people say it's black metal. Is it really? Is it really black metal? I don't understand that. How can it be black metal, because it sure sounds like what most people's idea about black metal is, but it has none of that feeling.
