what are your favorite shounen protagonists?

Ironically, despite my love of Shonen and running an entire blog analyzing Shonen Manga, there aren't a lot of protagonists I like. Not because the stereotypical shonen lead is a type of character I dislike, but rather because the stories themselves are sometimes too centered around the protagonists and don't really challenge those characters or explore their flaws.

So, to give two examples of Two Shonen Protagonists I think are written well.

THE HOMETOWN HERO - ICHIGO FROM BLEACH

Do you know who the best superhero is? Not in my opinion, the objective best my opinion is right and yours is wrong superhero is Spiderman. Peter Parker is not the strongest superhero, he doesn’t save the world, and he at most protects a few city blocks in New York.

He’s just some teenager who suddenly had an enormous power thrust upon him. He suddenly becomes strong, but the power he gets doesn’t magically make him a good person. He is at times irresponsible, selfish and shuns heroism. What makes Peter Parker an interesting hero is that while promoting the idea that anyone could be Spiderman, anyone could be a hero, he at the same time continually struggles and is weak, rather than being a strong and conquering hero. He’s a small time person, in a big world trying to get by protecting a few people rather than saving the world.

I think this is what shines most about Ichigo’s character, especially in the earth days of Bleach. I know that eventually we learn Ichigo is a unique Soul Reaper / Quincy Hybrid but that’s Shonen power scaling for you. For 3/4ths of Bleach Ichigo is just a dude randomly empowered as a soul reaper who is trying to protect his closer circle of friends. While Ichigo will fight to protect someone right in front of him, he’s not a Shonen all loving hero who is trying to save everyone and protect everyone. He’s someone with a small circle of friends who will go to great lengths for them, but also always returns to his normal life at the end of the story. He’s not the strongest Shinigami, he’s the substitute Shinigami. He also doesn’t magically make friends with everyone, the relationships he has with the main five, plus Rukia and Renji later on are forged in the first part of the story, and then desmonstrated in the length he will go for those friends when they are lost to him, Rukia in the Soul Society arc, Orihime in the Hueco Mundo, and finally Ishida in the Quincy Arc.

Ichigo’s characterization is especially strong in the first few arcs, where he’s a bit of a selfish and angry punk. He’s kind of frustrated by the fact he has to leave school constantly to fight hollows, he argues with Rukia all the time, even in the soul society arc he’s not really connected to the plots of greater soul society he literally is just there to save Rukia and leave. When a story is too centered around its protagonist, it weakens it because the protagonist isn’t as challenged, whereas Ichigo while being the hero of the story is also just one piece of a greater whole. What’s interesting about Bleach is one of the best Stories told in that universe is Can’t Fear Your Own World, written by Ryohgo Narita and Ichigo isn’t even in it, yet the story isn’t lacking without his presence. I argue this makes Ichigo a good protagonist because Ichigo can exist as one character as many in a bigger esnemble cast without devouring the story or needing everything around himself and Ichigo’s smalltime stakes and conflcits are still compelling because they matter to him.

JUST SOME LOSER - TAKEMICHI FROM TOKYO REVENGERS

A lot of protagonists are everyman, but very few protagonists represent the fact that a lot of people are weak, and flawed and not heroes. Ichigo and Takemichi are both characters who are essentially ordinary people who are randomly given a magical power, but while Ichigo represents the idea that anyone can become a hero, Takemichi is a much more pathetic character and his flaws are flaws he can have in common with a lot of people. He’s in a dead end job, he’s cowardly rather than brave, he’s not really talented in anything and he’s directionless in his life.

What’s interesting about him is that these Takemichi never gets stronger, he’s continually weak throughout the whole story. He’s not the strongest like Mikey, he’s not an extremely loyal and protective Lieutenant and friend like Daken. Takemichi is whiny to the point where it’s annoying, he’s ineffectual, and he fails more times than he succeeds. What’s so interesting about Tokyo Revengers is that despite the fact that Takemichi’s goal is to go back in time and save people, there are just as many people that he fails to save as he does save, people die around him all the time and he lives with those deaths and keeps going.

The key word is struggle. Struggle, struggle, struggle. Takemichi struggles with flaws that never truly go away. Even in the best future timeline, he’s still working at a video rental store. There are future timelines where his future self becomes the villain and corrupted.

Despite being so inherently flawed a person, Takemichi is also someone who is appreciated by the people around him, because he goes out of his way to forge those connections. One of my favorite quotes of Takemichi is that “Everyone sucks, but that’s why we need other people.”

Takemichi is flawed in which ways everyone are flawed, we are all cowards sometimes, we are all weak in the face of challenges, but Takemichi shows us our flaws can be the reason we sympathize with each other and form friendships rather than fighting each other. Takemichi is a loser in life, but he’s also a good friend to have, because even though he’s not the strongest or the bravest, he learns from his many mistakes and because he has made so many he sympathizes with others who make similiar mistakes instead of judging them.

One reason reason that Shonen Power of Friendship protaognists often fall flat is because the story doesn’t go out of their way to demonstrate why everyone likes the protagonist because everyone just instantly loves them without it feeling earned. Whereas, we know why Takemichi forms strong bonds with the people around him, he is someone who will be there for you in a pinch, and he won’t judge you because he’s been there before and had similiar struggles. While reading the story, I never question why someone like Mikey would hang out with a loser like Takemichi, because the story goes to show how much Takemichi cares for Mikey and tries to be there for him. I know why this loser is the protagonist of the story too, because as beaten and bruised as he can get he has a strong heart.

Cute headcanons with Tokyo Revengers boys P.1

Mikey clings tightly to you when he sleeps and cuddles. 1. because he gets cold quickly in his sleep and 2. because there are moments, when he hates himself so much that he thinks you'll leave him if he doesn't. He thinks that you would leave and that he will end up alone.

Draken sends you several messages throughout the day in which he either reminds you to eat, drink and sleep enough or that he loves and values you above all else. Most of the time the messages aren't really long, but it's enough to make you smile every time.

Mitsuya also makes you a bento every morning when he makes one for himself and his sisters, just to put it on your table before the main break. He thinks it's so cute how your eyes sparkle when you find your favourite food, but doesn't have the courage to look at your adorable expression for more than two seconds.

Chifuyu is extremely worried when you don't come to school, even if you just have to go to an appointment or something like that. He always thinks that you're lying in bed at home, terminally ill, and that you're feeling terrible. Sometimes he skips school to look after you straight away and if he doesn't, he goes to see you as soon as possible after school.

Baji can't handle seeing you cry. He just can't. Every time you start crying, he feels like something inside him is breaking. The thought that he might be the one making you so unhappy spreads through him extremely quickly the moment he sees the first tear. However, when they tell him that someone else has made you cry, he comforts you first and then disappears as quickly as he can. I think we all know why the mean person somehow stops coming to class from then on.

Takemichi cried during your first kiss. He cries quite often for different things, but it just made him cry with joy. How close you were to him, how soft your lips felt on his and how perfectly you fit in his arms. How could he not start crying?

Angry loves the way you smell. Of course he likes your perfume, but your natural body odour smells a thousand times better to him. He's far too shy to do it in public, but when you're alone he likes to put his head in the crook of your neck because that's where your body smell is strongest. He would kill for it

Smiley, unlike his brother, is not at all afraid of showing affection in public. Whenever he can, he literally sticks to you. Whether he's holding your hand, putting an arm around you or hugging you from behind. Sometimes he just comes up behind you when you're talking to someone and wraps his arms around your waist from behind.

Hakkai talks quietly in his sleep. He usually talks about trivial things or tells you about his day. It may sound confusing, but after practising a few times you understand what he is mumbling to himself. The first time you noticed it was when you spent the night at his place and you went to bed, but he suddenly started talking in a drunken stupor. He is such a shy soul and usually he is the one who listens while you talk and he loves to listen to you, but in his sleep he always starts talking non-stop. How ironic…

Kazutora keeps writing you letters. He got into the habit when he was in juvenile jail. He sent you countless letters and you answered him as quickly as you could. You gave him therapy from afar and he was able to tell you about all his worries and problems. You made plans for the time when he got out again. That was one of the few things that kept him alive.

Koko can't help but take you to every one of his business dinners and show you off excessively. He buys you the most expensive dresses and simply takes you with him as his mental support. He has one arm around your waist the whole time as if you were a trophy.

Inupi can't fall asleep without you. He makes sure he spends every night close to you and therefore always comes home on time. When you're not by his side, he feels so lonely, almost empty. As if every happy memory around him has completely disappeared.

Hanma cannot stand arguing with you. It feels like he's pushing away the only person he's ever loved and who has ever loved him for who he is. He was never loved by anyone for who he was and so he just couldn't bear to see you go. Although he teases you all the time, he deliberately avoids arguments with you so as not to give you a reason to turn your back on him.

The first time you met Mitsuya was when you were there to pick your brother from school.

"'Neesan"your little brother calls out as he saw you and wobbled on his way towards you. You crouched down infront of him and patted his head.

"Woah. You seem excited, made new friends?"

Your brother nods pointing back towards a cute girl with pink hair.

"Her name's luna! Luna look she's my 'neesan" the little girl slowly came towars you with sparkling eyes as if admiring you.

"Your 'neesan's an angel" she mumbles cutely making you smile and ruffle her hair.

Your lil bro huffed cockily "told ya! "You chuckled shaking ur head at these kids but the next thing you heard made you frown.

"My 'neesan will like her"

"yeah and you'll get a big sis too and me a big bro" they both clapped there hands.

"Woah Woah what's going on in that tiny head of yours?" You lightly flicked your brother's head and luna was bout to say something before a voice stopped her.

"Luna!"

You three turned your head towards the voice noticing it came from a boy your age with lavender hair.

"He looks intimidating .."

He bent down and pinched the said girl's cheek softly.

"so you were here huh...don't roam around on your own"

"but i was doin you a favour! Look i found an angel for you"

It was then that mitsuya finally noticed your presence and looked at you.

You being the not so friendliest person on earth smiled at him before getting up and grabbing your brother's hand ~planning to run away~.

He stared at you before smiling back

"Don't mind her words she's always like this" he said ruffling the girl's hair who seemed to be his lil sister .

"Uh i dont mind, my bro is also like this" you smiled softly looking at the two younger . "Looks like these two have become good friends".

"Well she wasn't wrong bout you being an angel" Mistuya winked at you making you shrug your shoulders with a "ikr" expression and chuckle as you were a flirt yourself.

Since then, you two started having little conversations here and there when picking up the little ones from school.

Sometimes he would invite you to his house showing you his croquis sketches and pieces of half made toile which only made you admire him more and encouraged him in his dream to be a fashion designer in future.

You also got to know bout him being a delinquent and a member of toman. It was hard to believe at first as his behavior was too gentle for a delinquent , you thought.

One time when you came to his house excitedly to show him your sketches of clothes and for some criticism as you were an artist yourself , you were greeted by a swollen-faced ,full of bruises , mitsuya with wrongly tied bandages and only then it finally occured to you that "yeah he is a delinquent ".

From then on , You became his personal nurse as he lacked in the taking care of himself department and his mom used to be out of town for work ,so why not?

Sometimes during tending his wounds or sketching various designs together, there were few moments of tension which you used to brush off by you making him flustered failed like when you were treating his lip wound , you looked at him mischievously and poked his lower lip.

"Should i kiss it ? It will heal better!"

"yeah with the tongue please"

"..."

ahem so yeah you were left with your mouth hunged open, no comebacks making him smirk. Mind you it's mitsuya takashi for fuck's sake-

Overall, It was all fun and games until your stomach became a florist, attracting butterflies everytime mitsuya was under the radar.

Man..and how when you tried to compose yourself infront of him , he fucking had to smile so beautifully making you melt and evaporate.

To confirm it, one time, Mitsuya came home late at night, parked his bike after coming from the gang, standing infront of his door sighing at the thought that he still needs to cook dinner and put his sisters to sleep, he opened the door only to be greeted by a delicious smell.

."huh..?" He thought making his way to the kitchen and meeting eyes with you wearing his apron washing the dishes.

"You.." his shoulders slumped in a relaxing state .

"I knew you had a fight with the other gang so, i came over and flexed my delicious cooking to luna and mana and uk i also made-

He stopped you mid way by back hugging you transferring his body weight onto you, wrapping his arms around your waist loosely, he breathes out a sigh tickling your neck.

"Thanks..." he words tiredly to which you faintly smiled and hummed in response.

"Staying over.?"

"Yup.."

"Good"

He rests his chin on your shoulder.

"You look like a wife"

"Then should I say "Welcome back honey"?.." you joked, removing the gloves after being done with the dishes. He backs away from the hug giving you space as you removed the apron.

Finally, you turned towards him fully only to see him rummaging his pockets before taking out a piece of cloth.

"wait...its a sample, the one you have been trying to get for your toile."

"How did you get it ?"

"To remind you, I'm the president of the sewing club, asked the girls there to order this one, planned to give it to you later but here we are."

He hands it over to you, smiling so gently ,that was the time, you confirmed, you wanna protect this man..

So yeah, you realized that you liked Mitsuya Takashi.

But you did little to nothing bout it as you figured there's something mutual but internally feared that this is only platonic.

Until on 26th dec, after the Christmas incident with taiju, you heard hakkai whom you met through mistuya whisper to you bout how he doubts that his big sis, yuzuha might have a crush on mitsuya..

"You sure it isn't you hallucinating?" You frown.

Hakkai groans " no and i think taka chan likes her back beacuse he hugged her there".

Boy, how your heart dropped to your stomach.

"I-It was just a hug, no big deal".

"But in taka chan's case it is! Have you seen him hug any female besides her sisters? And he is affectionate towards her too"

As if you weren't getting anxious before now you were succesfully in a foul mood. As much as you don't wanna overthink hakkai's philosophy, your doubt has been sprouted.

"What if you were just being delusional and there's nothing mutual between you two.? What if he really likes yuzuha then you shouldn't come between them"

So when mistuya asked you to go with him to the new year eve's shrine , you declined him as yuzuha was also coming and your heart wasn't strong enough to see him with someone else.

"Any reason as to why you dont wanna come..?" Mistuya inquired aware of the change of mood of yours these days.

"I just don't, okay" you said as you called your brother, who was busy playing with luna and mana, you used to tag him along with u to see mitsuya's, so that he can play with his sisters and ~u can have an excuse to see him"

"Let's go home now bub" you grabbed your bro's hand, preparing to go but mitsuya stopped you from doin the motion by grabbing your wrist, smiling softly at your brother and signaling him to go play more, he turned towards u with a stern expression contradicting how his hand gently grabbed yours, grazing his thumb on your knuckles.

" you seem to have something on your mind these days..wanna talk bout it ?"

You hissed wanting to yell in frustration but your words came out as a mumble.

" i told you its nothing..and you can't fix it anyway..."

The way his hand tightened around yours made you look at him. He cups your cheek softly looking at you with a concerned gaze.

"If it's bothering you then it's not nothing, Shutting me out won't solve it. You only visit now when in need of samples and you keep acting like you're looking for an excuse to leave. "

"So? Is there any other reason for me to visit?"

He frowns " You know there is.."

Your face turned soft. "No i don't "

He didn't speak anything further and just stared at you silently

You sighed. You knew he won't stop until you tell him what's wrong.

"Fine...Hakkai told me that yuzuha likes you..and "

"And?"

You looked away trying to ignore his intimidating gaze

"And you also like her"

He chuckled

"So that's it huh.."

You looked at him confusedly

"What.?"

"The one yuzuha likes is not me, it's Takemicchi "

"Huh? "

Before you can make any reaction he pulled you closer making you gasp

"As for the later one. I thought i made myself clear with the actions, didn't i?

You just looked down

"So you coming for the festival.? " He raises his eyebrows .

"..yeah"

"Good" he ruffled your hair before pulling away

"Damn you hakkai I'll kill you"

New year's eve, 11:30pm

"Where are we going..?"

You asked mistuya as he, out of nowhere dragged you away from your friend circle.

He stopped after making sure you both are out of there sight especially his lil sister's. He looked at you smiling cheekily.

"Yesterday about our discussion, i had a strong urge to make it clear to you but our siblings were there,..so i had to hold it"

He cups your cheek with one hand , pulling you closer with another.

"But now I can't "

He kisses you, where he pecks you a thousand times and you just stand there giggling with your face squished in his palms.

"I .better. not. hear. you .say .shit .like .this .again". He whispers between the kisses.

You smile in the kiss.

"Okay"

After a while ,you pull away from the kiss looking at him unable to control your smile.

"Your sister was right about you"

"About..?" He asked trying hard to suppress his own grin.

"That her neesan will like me"

He smiled widely before closing the gap between your mouths again.

....

Few feets away were standing two blond teenagers staring gawking at you two shamelessly while putting a hand infront of the younger one's eyes to stop them from seeing their olders like this.

The tall one sighed. "Man, I guess I'm the only one to have no luck with girls. "

Takemichi looked at his partner, chifuyu, and smiled secretly looking at the sky

" It's not long before chifuyu meet her..."

Takemichi is a time traveler afterall.

he'll feel so lucky! he will have a clear sense of purpose and accomplishment if you tell him that you like to take care of him in this way. no because his omega is a good cook and a cutie? an absolute win.

he thinks your cooking is the best and won't eat anything else, luckily that's your hobby so it doesn't feel like a chore.

always praises you for how well you cook, he expresses his contentment in such an exaggerated way just to show that's he's really appreciative of your efforts!

thanks you after each meal and asks you if you can also cook him lunchbox. he's practically begging you, so you can't say no<3 but of course if you refuse he won't force you, he'll insist every time he sees you and will get a bit pouty for a while but that's about it.

KAKUCHO

alpha kakucho is so sweet he feels so moved by your gifts:(

like yes of course he'll wear anything his adorable omega made for him. you're so skilled he's always in awe.

buys you more stuff so you can always have materials if you want to sew or knit something.

he's scenting every single piece of work, and whenever you throw away an item you're disappointed with, he'll secretly grab it back whenever you're not around. because none of your work is worthless in his eyes!

he's very admirative of what you do in general, seeing his omega so immersed and passionate about an activity melts his heart!!

and when you shyly gift him a sweater for his birthday he's ecstatic, thanking you with wet kisses and a slight blush across his face.

SANZU

in sanzu's mind, this is the way things should be anyways.

but fuck, when he sees you cooking for the both of you he feels so great. especially if you do take into consideration his taste before yours.

he wants to marry you on the spot.

your need to take care of your alpha makes him really appreciative, although a bit cocky at times.

like, you're just so eager to please your alpha:( it's socendearing and makes him a tad bit more protective.

kindly demands you to step back while he gets the tray of snacks out of the oven while praising you for being a good girl and listening well to what he tells you.

nothing tastes bad when it's you who cooks. but if you ever did mess up a recipe and didn't catch on it yet (because you always make kisaki taste it first) he will politely and gently tell you it probably lacks a bit of salt.

you chuckle a bit when you finally taste the food and it's just awful, kissing your alpha for being so sweet with you<3

TAIJU

taiju is just really pleased and satisfied by his omega.

like you're so perfect for him and his stereotypical lifestyle (sorry).

you cook, you clean and overall make sure your home is well maintained. taiju thinks you fit your role so well and he couldn't be any more pleased with you.

and when he sees you knit items and blankets for your nest, he can't help but think you'll make a wonderful mother for your future pups.

you'll make warm clothes for them, make sure they eat well and keep them healthy.

you just don't know how much you trigger his instincts which command him to protect and provide.

in his eyes, you only need to stay at home while he takes care of everything else. just be that sweet and submissive omega he fell in love with<3

HANMA

hanma always knew you had a thing for decoration, always buying small stuff, curtains, lamps, carpets and other furniture to embellish your home.

he knew that as an omega you liked it cozy and warm, and seeing you walk around the house with a serious and focused face always made him smile.

he likes to observe you while you replace the same vase for the ninth time. he doesn't really see the difference but you seem to take this to heart.

you're always moving things around, needing to find the perfect spot for each item. you like your home organised, you often apologise for never stopping until you're satisfied, but he waves you off saying he doesn't mind at all.

gives you his opinion once in a while about something, you think it's because he wants to take part in the process but it's actually because he knows you won't stop pacing until someone decides for you.

he'll sometimes walk across some store which sells the type of furniture he knows you like and deliver it to your place.

you give hanma a call to thank him, he acts like it's no big deal but you know he likes to spoil you.

later asks for a repay though. if he doesn't ask for something sexual, he'll force you to cuddle him. it clearly depends of your mood, he's really good at reading you.
