Those Damn Crows Show Manchester Rock ‘N’ Roll Ain’t Dead
For those not familiar with Those Damn Crows, they’re a rock five piece from Bridgend, South Wales. They released their third album – Inhale/Exhale – in February of this year.   This was the first time this reviewer had seen Those Damn Crows headline since February 2020.  The venue size was two-and-a-half-times larger than that gig, and the band made the most of it.  They’ve always been great to…

stories where the main character is a hopeful, optimistic pacifist in a bleak world usually takes one of two routes: one, everything works out for them. the world shifts to their kindness and they’re allowed easy routes on account of their morality. two, they’re torn apart by the story for being naive. their hope is something to mock and beat out of them and they can only grow once they abandon it.
then there is trigun.
trigun says that hope will hurt you. you will let people into your life that you shouldn’t have and they will leave you with scars. your obsession with trying to minimize the necessary conflict right in front of you will cause more damage than if you had just fought that battle. you can’t run from your past and all the times you’ve tried to be kind and failed. you can’t avoid hurting other people and you will have to live with that for the rest of your life.
but—
trigun says that there is so much kindness in all of us, and we are more likely to act on love than hate. no matter how many dark nights you’ve cried through, there are brighter tomorrows worth living for. if you want to be good, you can be good. love is what connects us and connection is how we save ourselves. we have to believe in each other. you are made of love. love is all we have.

vash and knives are each other's antithesis not because vash is kind and knives is cruel, but because vash thinks the best of people and knives thinks the worst

I'm so sorry but I really do think it's funny that Knives' plan in volume 8 is just "I'm going to store my siblings (yes, all of them, even my twin) in some containers and put a grate over it. Surely this will solve everything."

Oddly specific but could you write something with a whumper carving whumpees prisoner number into them (you choose the spot). To add more spice whumpee tries to be defiant and not cry out, but the second whumper leaves, they break down as they realize they’re not in control anymore >:)
I can absolutely write this! This is a wonderful idea. Poor Whumpee doesn't know what's coming. (please feel free to always ask)
Warnings: captivity, implied future torture, knives, restraints, blood, carving, mutilation, humiliation, cruel whumper, defiant whumpee
"Fuck you," Whumpee hissed as they struggled in Whumper's grasp. Between the ropes binding them to the table and Whumper's strong grip, Whumpee could barely move. But that didn't mean they weren't going to try to escape.
"Such a mouth on you, my sweet. I do so love that about you," Whumper chuckled as they fingered the large utility knife on their belt. "You are by far the most spirited I have taken. I'll give you that."
Whumpee didn't freeze despite learning that Whumper had been at this a while. And it seemed like no one knew. "Well, then you know this won't be easy! Get your fucking hands OFF ME!" Whumpee gave a fruitless almighty shove but only succeeded in banging their head on the table.
"I enjoy a challenge. Now hold still." Whumper pulled the knife swiftly. "I would hate to end our time together too soon."
"What are you doing! Get off me!" Whumpee growled as Whumper cut away their shirt.
"I'm marking you. That way no matter what happens you'll always know you were mine, Number Twenty-Three. If you escape, you'll always know you were mine. And well, if you end up like the others, if they ever find your corpse, they'll know you were mine."
Whumpee swallowed. Number Twenty-Three? There were twenty-two others. Twenty-two lives lost. I can't be like the others. I have to escape. "Do your worst then."
Whumper stopped, knife poised over Whumpee's heart. "It will hurt, but it won't be deep enough to kill you. I've practiced."
Before Whumpee could reply, Whumper began to carve the letters into Whumpee's chest. Began to carve the words that Whumpee would bear on their flesh until the day the died. Began to carve the words that permanently marked Whumpee as theirs.
And Whumpee didn't cry out. Didn't cry out as they felt their blood run over their skin. Didn't cry out as Whumper dug the knife in. Didn't cry out as Whumper dragged the knife up and down. Didn't so much as make a noise as Whumper worked. Because that was what Whumper wanted. And Whumpee couldn't give Whumper that satisfaction.
"That wasn't so bad, was it?" Whumper purred as they finally stood up.
Whumpee was shaking. Between the pain, blood loss, and rage, Whumpee's whole body trembled. They couldn't react. "I've had worse."
Whumper beamed. "Excellent. We'll see just how much worse. But first," Whumper began to walk to the door, "let me change into something more appropriate."
Whumpee heard the door close and Whumper's heavy footsteps retreat from the room. As Whumper's steps faded, the first tear slid down Whumpee's cheek. Followed by another. And another.
As Whumpee cried silently, they could feel the flames of hope that had been burning in their chest from the moment Whumper grabbed them begin to flicker and fade. Could feel the pain of the open wounds on their chest. Could feel despair begin to set in. Because Whumper had complete control over them. And there was nothing Whumpee could do to stop it.

On Knives and Plants
I see a lot of people saying that Knives does not care about plants. That he treats them like things and takes away their agency.
Firstly, what agency?
Did they choose to be put in tanks and used for their ability to create? When they’re dying, do they say to someone “hey, I’m about to die. Please force me to use up all of my energy in one last, painful burst if it will make your lives better.”?
Could Knives go about things better? Of course. There are areas where one can say he is objectively in the wrong - that he is objectively doing something selfish. But when it comes to plants, I disagree.
I’ve seen people say all he cares about in Stampede is reaching the higher dimension. Why, though? What purpose does that serve if not to ultimately help the plants? He wants them all to be independent, like him.
In Stampede, Conrad says the plants are soulless husks. That that’s the difference between Vash and Knives and other plants. He says their true being is located elsewhere and their physical forms are just a window between those worlds.
If Knives feels this way, does it not stand to reason that he feels this because that is what he was taught?
Conrad also says that in order to give the plants souls, they must connect to the core.
Knives doesn’t need the core to help himself. If everything he does is selfish, there is no reason to include the plants at all.
If he considered himself better than them - if he thought they were soulless husks - he could just kill them. He doesn’t need their power in order to wipe out what remains of humanity. He can do that on his own. He made the ships crash without the help of plants. He destroyed Jeneora Rock using his own abilities.
He doesn’t even need to expend the kind of power he did at Jeneora Rock if he wants to kill humans. Knives could go from town to town, destroying these ‘inferior’ plants and leaving the people behind to suffer and die.
He doesn’t do that. He brings the plants with him. In Stampede, the red ones are to further his goals.
One could argue that is selfish.
Is it worse, however, than humans doing it? Knives is one of them. He believes he is using the last of their energy for something that will ultimately benefit all plants. The plants cannot fully articulate their will. Knives has to interpret it. He sees them suffering and it hurts him and he wants that to stop.
One could argue that he only does this to ease his own pain.
He is almost certainly projecting, to a degree. He knows how he would feel in that position. He is scared of what it means when he sees how little humans value the lives of plants.
I don’t think that means he doesn’t care about them. I don’t think it means he doesn’t feel for them.
Re-l makes some very good points about his behavior toward plants in the manga in this post. https://www.tumblr.com/re-l/713763378777227264/idk-i-guess-the-comparisons-between-tristamp-and?source=share
I agree with most of that. (Except where it concerns his behavior in Stampede, for the reasons I’ve mentioned above).
However, I will get into the manga myself a little bit here.
Knives lives his whole life in service of one goal. He says himself (Trimax vol. 8, ch. 2) that his only purpose is to save the imprisoned plants. He doesn’t say his goal is to destroy humanity. He just says that is an acceptable side effect of his actions.
Tumblr media
When the plants ultimately abandon him, he says he’ll keep fighting, but only shortly after that he wishes for Vash to kill him. (Trimax vol. 14, ch. 7)
Tumblr media
I’ve seen people complain about how he handles the dead plants in Stampede. In the manga, he and Vash both acknowledge that humans throw away plant corpses like garbage. (Trimax vol. 8, ch. 1) Many human funeral rites are designed to give peace to the living, but Knives is not going to find peace in using human rituals for dead plants.
Tumblr media
Could he have come up with something better than decorating his piano room with them? Maybe. But I believe it is unfair to say he is wholly selfish there.
Look at how he reacts during the Last Run.
Tumblr media
Here is a close-up of Knives’ expression in this scene. He looks like he is about to cry before he redirects that into anger.
Tumblr media
And here is what he is seeing as he makes that face.
Tumblr media
He reaches out to the plants. He demands that Conrad save them.

When the plants die, Knives falls to his knees. He isn’t attacking anyone yet. He doesn’t care about how he is perceived or about trying to act strong. He is truly devastated. It isn’t until Vash shows up that he composes himself. And it isn’t until Vash does not react to the plight of the plants that he becomes violent.
Plants are, arguably, the only thing Knives cares about in a way that is not twisted and selfish. He is willing to die for them.
He gives everything for them, in every iteration of Trigun.

@adventures-written the zombie AU
Their whole life, as far as he remembered, they had been running. The brother of his more than he had. Vash had run from the group they were with, from the life they had built there. Most importantly however, he had run from him. That’s how Knives had seen it for the majority of their time spent apart. Perhaps out of self preservation, so he wouldn’t beat himself up for not going with him that night in which he catched Vash packing his things to leave camp.
He saw it more clearly now. Vash had been weak, not made for a life full of fighting, survival of the fittest and a dog eats dog mentality. He was soft, too touchy-feely, too naive and most importantly too trusting. That he even had made it that far without him was astounding to Knives. But now that they were reunited, he didn’t want to miss him anymore. No matter what, he wouldn’t let Vash go again!
It had been a gas station at which he had run into him and no matter how happy their reunion had been, it did end in misery, when they fought off some infected and one of them got hold of Vash’s left under arm with its teeth. One of Knives hunting knifes rammed into the infected head and let it go limb, but the bite wound on his brother’s arm was bruising deep red. It had broken into his skin.
“Shit.”, the barely older twin cursed. Knowing he could not hesitate even for a second, he pushed Vash to the ground and fumbled with his belt, to rip it off his pants. In swift motions, the leather was wrapped around Vash’s upper left arm instead and laced shut as tight as possible. “It gonna be alright. I’ve got you.”, he assured him, pulling out a second, still clean and way sharper knife.
“Though this will hurt like hell. - Sorry.” Without a further warning, he used all his strength to get to cutting through the arm, supposingly trying to do it right at the edge of the elbow to get a clean cut through the joints.
