Warm summer nights
Summary: Flying can actually be fun when it´s with Draco.
“(Y/n), (Y/n), wake up!”, you heard a voice whispering.
Your eyes opened fluttering and squinted at the bright light of the petroleum lamp, only centimetres away from your face. Your body felt heavy and was sunken into the soft mattress under it. Still lost in the world of your dreams you wanted nothing more than to drift back into the sweet void of sleep. But your roommates had different plans.
“(Y/n), let´s go. It´s time.”
You mumbled something incomprehensible and wanted to turn around, away from the light and the voices, but someone grabbed you by your arm, preventing you from doing so. Another hand grabbed your blanket and pulled it away. You groaned. It wasn’t exactly cold, but the cosiness you had felt slowly began to fade.
“What is wrong with you? Do you know what time it is?”, you grumbled, as you blinked into the grinning faces of your friends.
“Exactly ten minutes before midnight.”, one of your roommates stated. “And that´s why we have to hurry. We don’t want to be late, do we?”
Slowly you sat up and rubbed the sleep out of your eyes. As you did so, you started to remember what was going on. It was that night. The night of the nights. You and your friends had been waiting for this all year.
Within seconds, you were fully awake. You jumped out of bed and slipped into your shoes.
“What are we waiting for then?”, you asked, while you took a short look into the mirror of your dorm, trying to fix your messy hair so it wouldn’t be in the way.
Your friends stood already at the door of your dorm. You gave them a short nod as a sign you were ready. The door opened squeakily.
“Careful, we don’t want to be caught.”
“We´re doing nothing forbidden.”
“Yet.”
When you left the dorm, you encountered some other students from your house. You gave them a silent smile as you crossed the common room.
“Ready?”
“Ready.”
The entrance door swung open. Carefully one of your fellow students looked into the corridor in front of you.
“The coast is clear.”, they whispered.
One by one you left the common room and entered the corridor. You shivered. Even in the summer, the heavy stone walls of the castle kept the corridors and classrooms cool.
In your pyjamas, you tiptoed through the corridors. All you could hear was the heavy breathing and quiet footsteps of you and the others. You could feel your heart pounding in your chest and couldn’t help but wonder if the others heard your heart beating as well.
Finally, you reached the heavy gate of the castle. You held your breath as one of the older students tampered with it.
Open.
You let out a sight of relief. Even though you weren’t exactly surprised that it worked out. It always did.
Officially, none of the teachers knew what you were up to every first full moon of the summer. But for some reason, neither you nor any of the students before you had ever been caught that night. The gate was always open, even though Filch never forgot to close it and when you went back to bed, shortly before sunrise, the house elves had prepared some food and drinks for you. Plus, when you had school the next day, the teachers always took it easy with you, wondering with a knowing smirk on their lips why you were all so tired that day.
You didn’t know who came up with the idea. All you knew was that already your parents used to sneak out to the Quidditch pitch on that particular night. You lived in a world full of magic, yet this was one of the most magical things you had ever experienced. Because every once in a year, all students from the fifth year and above sneaked out to the Quidditch pitch to play. But it was nothing like the matches of the house cup. It didn’t matter which house you belonged to, whether you could play or not. There weren’t even actual teams. You were all just sitting on your brooms, trying to get a Quaffle into the goal or trying to prevent it from getting in. Or you were just flying around, looking at the bustle from above. Some of the better Quidditch players tried to teach those of you who couldn’t play and everyone could try out the best brooms the school had. You knew many people eagerly waited for this night to try out Harry Potter´s firebolt. But some people, like you, also preferred to stay on the ground. It wasn’t that you didn’t like Quidditch. You simply preferred watching it with both of your feet on safe ground. Still, to watch the hustle and bustle from the stand was just as fun as flying. At least in your opinion.
When you got closer to the pitch you could already hear the screams and laughter of your fellow students. Finally, you reached the court. Many people stood on the grass, looking for one of the school´s brooms since most of the people who weren’t in the team of their house didn’t possess a broom on their own. You could see a group of admirers clustering around Harry, who was standing there with his firebolt in his hand and explained to some fifth-year Hufflepuffs and Ravenclaws the differences between the firebolt and his old Nimbus 2000 and promised them, that everyone who wanted to would get a chance to fly a short round on it. You smiled. That was the true magic of the night. Most of those students probably wouldn’t have dared to talk to the famous Harry Potter on other occasions, but tonight everything was possible. Tonight, they were all the same, regardless of their houses or their years. Everyone got along.
“Found some new admirers Potter?”
Well, maybe not everyone.
Your eyes drifted from Harry to a blond boy in a dark green silky pyjama. Draco Malfoy stood only a few meters away from you, with his own broom in his hand. You weren’t an expert in these things, but it looked just as good and expensive as Harry´s broom did. You knew Draco´s father had gifted it to him. It was hard not to know since he had told everyone who did or didn’t want to hear it in such a loud voice by now the entire school knew. It was too dark to see, but you were pretty sure, Harry rolled his eyes when he heard the spiteful remark of his enemy.
“Jealous Malfoy?”
“Of you? You wish Potter!”, Draco sneered. “Just saying your broom is just as pathetic as you. Don’t understand why anyone is even interested in it.”
“Maybe because I won´t hex them if they touch it.”, Harry replied.
You still remembered last year, when Draco had nearly hexed another student because he had touched his broom, without his permission, threatening to kill everyone who would dare to touch it next. After this, no one even came near Draco, which didn’t seem to bother him at all.
“I simply don’t want any grease stains on my broom. But dirt is probably something you are already used to since you always spend your holidays in Weasley´s house. If you can even call it like that.”
Some of the Gryffindors standing next to Harry were now busy keeping Ron from pouncing on Draco, who was standing there with a satisfied grin, while Crabbe and Goyle were already pushing themselves in front of Draco, in case the Gryffindors wouldn’t be able to hold Ron back.
“C´mon (Y/n), let´s look for a good place.”, one of your friends said, making your focus shift from Draco, Harry and Ron back to your friends.
You nodded in agreement and said goodbye to some of your roommates who wanted to try their luck in the air. You and your friend on the other side went up the stairs of the stand, looking for a place where you had a good view of the entire pitch. Finally, you saw Neville and Luna standing in a great spot and you decided to join them. After you had greeted them and some small talk, you focused on the pitch again. By now many students were up in the air. You could clearly see whose of those people practised Quidditch frequently and whose sat on a broom once or twice a year. You laughed as you saw the desperate tries of one of your friends to get their broomsticks on doing what they wanted. But they failed miserably, never getting their broom high enough to lift their feet off the ground. It looked hilarious watching them running over the pitch with their feet and a broomstick between their legs. It reminded you of the Muggle kids who dressed up as witches on Halloween, running through the streets with fake noses on theirs and a bag full of candies in their hands. Neville looked at them compassionately as well, probably remembering his own first -and last- flying lesson. Back then, he had nearly died, because his broom simply didn’t listen to him. But as it happened that had also been the moment, Harry became the youngest seeker of the century. Much to the resentment of Draco Malfoy.
Just as you thought about the Slytherin boy, you saw something glistening in the moonlight. You turned your head. It was Draco on his broom, racing over the pitch. No matter what people thought about him, everyone had to admit he was an amazing Quidditch player. His broom was polished to a high gloss, shimmering just as much as his blond hair. He simply looked flawless up there, as if he was home in the heights. Just as you got lost in watching him, he stopped abruptly and turned around quickly. But there was a small error in his plan. Draco had forgotten he wasn’t wearing his Quidditch uniform but a pyjama out of silk. And this was a much more slippery material than what his uniform was made of. For a second, he slipped, nearly dropping off his broom.
You held your breath. He was at least thirty meters above the ground. And other than at the normal games, there were no teachers who would be able to intervene if something would go wrong. If Draco would now fall, it might end worse than with some broken bones. But luckily, he regained his balance again. On his face, you could still see the shock, as he turned his head to see if anyone had seen what had just happened. You let out a small chuckle. Even moments away from death Draco´s pride was the most important to him. But as he turned his head a little further, his gaze suddenly met yours. As he saw you looking at him with an amused look on your face, he immediately knew you had seen him. You weren’t quite sure, but you could have sworn that Draco slightly blushed, as his face darkened for a moment in the bright moonlight. But what you knew for sure was that you blushed madly as the corner of his mouth twitched upwards into a small smile as he winked at you as soon as he had regained his composure. Because for some reason, Draco Malfoy had this effect on you. You were aware of his reputation and had seen him saying and doing things, you didn’t agree with at all, but still, when he looked at you it felt as if the world would stop for a few seconds. And you felt as if he would look at you quite often. Even though you also might just think so, because you caught yourself staring at him all the time. At dinner, in the classes, at his Quidditch matches. Sometimes he would catch your gaze and give you a warm smile, you rarely ever saw on his face or give you a knowing smirk and winked at you, as if he knew about the butterflies that erupted in your stomach every time he did so. But sometimes you also thought you might had caught him staring at you as well. But you were never sure about it because if he did, he did it much more discreetly than you, simply observing you from the corner of his eye and not obviously staring at him, getting lost in daydreams until it was too late to look away once more.
Just like you did now. Because you only realized that you were still staring at him when your friend nudged you. You snapped back to reality and looked at her in confusion when she nodded in another direction. You followed her gaze. Draco was flying in your direction, eyes fixed on you, with a sweet smile on his face. When he had reached the stand, he hovered over it for a moment, before jumping off of his broom right next to you, catching it, before it could fall.
“Do you want to try it?”
You stared at him in awe. It was the first time, he had approached you directly. You had rarely ever talked, most of the time in the lessons you shared or if he had a question about some homework in a class you were good in.
“I´m sorry, what?”, you asked, confused by his actions.
Draco gave you an amused smile and raised an eyebrow.
“Do you want to fly?”
“Me?”
“Yeah, you can try it if you want to.”
“You said you would hex everyone who would even touch your broom.”
“Well, I might have changed my mind.”
Your heart pounded. The last thing you wanted to do was sit on this thing, hovering several meters above the ground, probably breaking the broom and your neck as well. But on the other hand, you didn’t want to seem rude or ruin this probably unique chance.
“I… You know it´s been some years and I don’t know… I´ve never been good in this.”, you mumbled and felt your cheeks redden once more.
Draco smiled at you.
“I can teach you if you want to.” Did you? But when you looked into his eyes, that now that they reflected the light of the moon looked silvery, you simply couldn’t say no. And besides, what could possibly go wrong? Besides you making a fool of yourself or breaking all your bones?
Slowly, you nodded.
“But don’t blame me if I´ll break your broom.” Draco shrugged his shoulders.
“It´s just a broom.”, he mumbled, even though you could see his hand clenching around it a bit tighter.
You turned around to your friend.
“Are you okay with that?”, you asked, not wanting to leave her alone, even though Luna and Neville were great company.
She nodded.
“Go. And have fun.”, she said wiggling her eyebrows. She knew exactly how you thought about Draco and always teased you about the fact that you got so easily distracted by him.
“Okay, see you later.”, you smiled, waving at Luna and Neville, who gave you a concerned look. You didn’t know whether this was because they knew how miserable you were at flying or because Draco and they had never gotten along.
You followed Draco downstairs, back to the pitch. By now, most of the people were either on the stands or up in the air. Only some students were standing by the side, chatting. Your friend, who had had her own problems flying, was by now solid five meters above the ground, smiling happily, even though she looked still a bit shaky.
When Draco had found a suitable place, he turned around and looked at you with narrowed eyes.
“When was the last time you flied?”, he asked.
“In the first year. Flying lessons with Madame Hooch.”
Draco nodded. Then he took his time to explain all the groundwork to you once more. You listen attentively, trying to get not too distracted by the calm sound of his voice, which you had rarely ever heard or the way his gaze was fixed on you.
“Okay, you want to try it?”, he finally asked when he had finished.
You nodded.
“It´s worth a try, I guess.”
“Oh yeah, it´s going to be a wonderful sight.”, he smiled. “For you, I mean.”, he quickly added when you saw your irritated look. “The world looks completely different from up there.”
“I saw that from the stand too”, you mumbled, trying to hide the nervousness in your voice.
Draco laughed.
“You´ll see what I mean. Ready?”
“I think so.”
He handed you the broom. It felt light and smooth, quite different from the brooms of the school. Your hand shook slightly as you took it.
“Okay, now push off the ground and hover above it. If you want to get back to the ground, lower the tip of the broom. And don’t worry, if you´ll fall I´ll catch you.”
You took a deep breath. Then you did as he told you. For the first few tries, you just jumped up and came down right away again. But then you managed to hover in the air for some seconds.
“Great, that was great!”, Draco said with a big smile on his face.
Your face was heated. You weren’t sure if it was because of the strain and nervousness or his compliment.
“Try it again.”
And you did. Nearly one hour had passed when you finally managed to fly a round over the pitch, but only two or three meters above the ground, not daring to get any higher.
“You are truly a natural!”, Draco greeted you when you had a not-so-elegant landing next to him.
You were pretty sure that this was more than exaggerated, but you smiled at him nevertheless.
“Thanks, I guess.” “You want to get up higher?”, he asked
You shook your head eagerly.
“Don’t get me wrong Draco. This was fun and you´re a great teacher, but I want to make it out alive today.”
Also, even though you didn’t want to admit it, your legs and butt were already hurting and you already knew your muscles would be sore tomorrow. You had always known that Quidditch was a tough sport. But you didn’t thought flying itself would be so strenuous.
Draco looked slightly disappointed.
“But then you won´t see how beautiful the castle is from above.”
Before you could even answer, his face lit up again, as if he had an idea. He took his broom and got up. He hovered above the ground, spinning around you a few times. Then he stopped right next to you.
“Get up.”
“Get up?”, you asked aghast.
Draco nodded in confirmation.
“No.”
“Why not?”, he grinned. “Scared?”
“No, but…” You stopped. Yes, you were scared. But not only because of the heights. You knew Draco was a great flier. The thought of you being so close to him, and once in the air with no way out, scared you much more. It scared you just as much as it got you excited. “Aren´t we a bit too heavy? I thought racing brooms weren’t made for this.” “Don’t worry love. They are very robust.” Your heart skipped a beat as he called you by this name.
“So what do you think?”
Draco offered you a hand, looking at you questioningly. At first, you hesitated, but then, without thinking about it any further, you took it. Draco pulled you up, helping you find your place behind him. But with him in front of you, there was nothing to hold on to.
“Just wrap your arms around my waist. And hold on tight.”, Draco ordered, as if he had read your thoughts.
Carefully, you sneaked your arms around his waist. Your heartbeat quickened as you felt the warmth of his body under your fingers.
Little did you know, Draco´s heart did just the same and just like you he prayed that you wouldn’t notice. But as he lifted off from the ground and sped up and your grip around his waist tightened and you pressed your chest closer to his back, he couldn’t help the smug grin that crept on his face. At this moment he was glad, you couldn’t see that he was smiling like an idiot.
But for now, you saw nothing, because when Draco picked up the pace, you squeezed your eyes shut and hid your face in his back. Up here it was colder and the wind grew stronger. You felt a strong pressure on your ears until suddenly, they cracked, making you flinch. But it felt so much better now. Still, you didn’t dare to open your eyes. You nuzzled your face into Draco´s back and breathed in the smell of his cologne, feeling the contrast between the cool air and the heat he radiated.
“Are you all right there?”
Even though he yelled, his voice wasn’t loud, since the wind was tweaking on your ears. You nodded until you remembered that he couldn’t see you.
“I´m okay!”, you yelled back, but your voice sounded shaky.
“It´s beautiful, isn’t it?”
And that’s when you finally dared to open your eyes.
And what you saw wasn’t just beautiful. It was absolutely unforgettable and breathtaking.
You hovered at least fifty metres above the ground. By now you had left the quidditch pitch behind you and headed towards the greenhouses. The glass of the buildings was glistening in the moonlight. Somewhere in front of you, you could see Hagrid´s hut, standing there quietly and peaceful. To your left, you saw the forbidden forest. From up here it didn’t look threatening at all. You passed the Whomping Willow which lazily reached for you. But you were way too far above and way too fast. Before you could even see any details, you had passed it already.
When you reached the great lake, Draco slowed down. The water down there was calm, but due to some small waves, the moonlight, which got reflected by the water was diving the entire lake into its light. It looked as if the lake wasn’t made of water but millions of small crystals, shining so bright you had to squint your eyes. A small shadow whizzed above the surface. Your reflection. Suddenly, a bigger shadow darkened up a big part of the water, welling up the surface, making it sparkle even more. You wondered if that was the giant squid, someone had told you once about. But before you could take a closer look, it vanished into the deep again. When you could finally tear your gaze apart from the lake and looked into the distance, afar, you saw Hogsmeade. Some of the windows were still lit. You wondered what those people were up to that late at night. Maybe some of them looked at the moon just now, wondering what was going on in the world outside their window. Suddenly, Draco made a sharp turn to the right. You yelped in surprise and your fingers clung to the soft material of Draco´s pyjamas. Draco let out a low chuckle, making his whole body vibrate and sending chills down your spine.
As you were so often when it came to Draco, you weren’t sure if you just imagined it, but through the wind howling in your ears, you heard him whispering: “Don’t worry love. I got you.”
And he did for sure.
You placed one of your cheeks against his back and looked at the towers of the castle you were now flying a zigzag course around. For a moment you could have sworn you had seen Professor Dumbledore´s face in the window of his office, smiling up at you, but the moment passed and now you were sure it had simply been some wired kind of reflection.
Way too fast, the Quidditch pitch appeared in your field of vision again. Draco slowed down more and more and you started to lose height. Within minutes you had reached the ground again. Draco helped you climb from his broom before he got off himself. The moment your feet touched the ground, it felt like what had just happened had been nothing more than a dream. The noises of the other students sounded far too loud -even though most of them were by now whispering, eying you and wondering what was so special about you, that you had the honour to fly on Draco Malfoy´s broomstick and even to fly with him- and there was still the ringing of the wind in your ears.
When Draco turned around to you, you thought you had never seen something more beautiful. His cheeks were rosy from the cold wind up there and his normally perfect styled hair was tangled. But his eyes were glowing like you had never seen before and the wide grin on his face simply wouldn’t disappear. It only grew wider when he looked at you. But then he stopped short.
“Are you okay?”, he asked in a concerned voice.
You just nodded, not trusting your voice yet.
“Are you sure? You´re shaking. Are you cold?”
You actually did. Even though you hadn’t noticed until now. You didn’t know whether it was from the cold up there or from the adrenaline pumping through your veins.
“Yeah, I…” Your voice died and you cleared your throat. “I´m okay. I´m great actually. This was… Amazing. Just amazing!”
His face lit up again as he heard the delight in your voice. And when he saw your face he couldn’t help but smile. You looked like a child on Christmas eve.
“Glad you liked it.”, he chuckled.
The two of you just stared at each other, stunned at the magical moment you had just shared. Draco´s gaze wandered around your face. Then he raised a hand and tucked a loose strand of your hair behind your ear. When he had done so, he froze as if he had just realized his actions. Quickly he lowered his hand again.
“Sorry.”, he mumbled as he was able to tear his gaze apart from your face again and looked at the ground.
“No need to be.”, you smiled and tried to catch his gaze.
Just as you managed to and started to get lost in his eyes again, you heard a mocking voice behind you. “You don’t even allow your best friend to take your broom but she can? Must be a very special girl then.”
You turned around and saw a tall boy standing in front of you, grinning down at you and offering you his hand.
“Blaise Zabini.”, he introduced himself as you shook it.
“(Y/N) (Y/L/N)”, you smiled.
“Oh yeah, I think Draco mentioned you one or two times. Or maybe one hundred.”
“Get lost Zabini.”, Draco growled, throwing him a deadly glance.
Blaise Zabini raised his hands in defence and took a step back.
“Just came to tell you that there are some bets on whether you or Potter will make it faster one round around the castle. So you better win because I bet on you.”, he said, before turning around to you and winking at you. “Guess I see you around (Y/N).”
Then he disappeared into the night.
You turned around to Draco who looked pretty contrite.
“Lovely friend you got there.”, you laughed.
Draco forced out a small laugh and scratched his neck.
“Well, I guess. Sorry about that.” “Oh, I don’t mind. Not at all. But I think now I have to go and place some bets.”, you smiled.
Draco did so as well.
“On me I assume.” “You think you will win?”
“With the right appeal I surely will.”
You narrowed your eyes.
“So defeating Harry isn’t enough?”
“Probably but I thought you would want to make sure you will win your bet.”
“And how do I do that?”
Draco hesitated for a second before he blurted out: “Go out with me!”
You looked at him in surprise.
“If I win of course.”
He looked at you nervously as if he was scared, he might had misinterpreted the situation, but then a bright smile spread across your face again.
“Well, then you better make sure you will. Because I would love to go out with you.”
Draco sighted in relief.
“Trust me love. I will.”
He grabbed his broom again and got ready to get up. But before he did so, he turned to you once more.
“How about a kiss for good luck. Just to make sure, you know?”
You let out a laugh. “You´re unbelievable!”
Draco smiled at you cheekily.
“I know.”
Quickly, you got on your tiptoes and placed a small kiss on his cheek. After you did so the both of you looked at each other grinning maniacally.
“Now nothing can go wrong for sure.”, Draco smiled.
And he was right. Because he won the race and was vastly superior. But even if you never told him, both of you knew, that when Draco asked you to go to Hogsmeade with him the next week, you would have agreed anyway.

Bewitched
You stepped through the wooden door of the little chapel, taking a deep breath. It was Sunday again; time for you and your mother to go to mass. Although, you stopped going to church for God's sake a long time ago... Since the new vicar arrived in Aldwinter, to be exactly. Father William Ransome. Unlike the other vicars Aldwinter had seen, was Will a sight for sore eyes. He wasn't just forbiddingly handsome - for a reverend, no, he was the kindest, friendliest man you ever met. He wasn't like any other man in Aldwinter. You quickly realised that. Unless some other men, he was a gentleman. Respectful and caring. He had, without a doubt, a heart of gold. Will often came to your house, to talk to your mother and you, since your father passed away a few months ago. Something she just couldn't get over. She couldn't accept that he was dead - what you could understand. Talking to the vicar helped your mother and you were more than thankful, that Will was here for her, looking after her and praying with her. It was no wonder, that you developed feelings for the wonderful man...
You were still unmarried. Something your mother chided you about; afraid that you'd end up as a lonely, old maiden. You always reassured her, told her that someday, you'd find the right man. Well, probably you did find him… Every time Will came around, you made sure to talk to him, enjoying every minute you had with him, before you left him to talk with your mother. You'd always go upstairs, sitting on the floor and peeking through the blanks of the railing on the second floor of your little, cosy cottage, to just watch him and hear him talk. Admire how his long, blonde-brown locks shone in the dim light of the petroleum lamp. How his big, veiny hand scratched his beardy chin from time to time. How the blue sweater he wore so often clung to his lean and seemingly well-defined body. Heard, how his deep, yet soothing laughter echoed through the room. Yes, you had fallen hard. The problem about this all? You knew that Will was still unmarried as well, but you were just too shy to say something to him - or even ask him, if he would be interested in courting you. You were a silent, secret admirer, hoping that someday you would just end up marrying him.
Like you said, you were going to mass on Sunday's only for Will. To see him and hear him speak. There was something about him preaching, which send your heart racing. Was it the change in his voice? Was it the way he gave so many people so much? Something to believe in. A place where they were always welcome. Faith. Hope. You couldn't tell, but something's got a hold of you every time you sat in that bench of the little chapel, looking at Will. You felt it taking over you, causing your head to spin. Was it the way he looked at you? Probably. Every mass was the same experience, with your nerves and feelings on edge. You enjoyed it, bathing in the feels only Will was able to give you. And every time you left, stepping through the same wooden door you came in, you hoped and dreamed about, that someday, you were the only person he spoke to - in the early mornings, late evenings and at night, when you couldn't sleep and would snuggle up in his warm embrace.

My soul, you really need this, for your lamp will not continue to burn for long without it. Your snuff will smoke and become an offense if light is gone, and gone it will be if you run out of oil. You have no oil well springing up in your human nature, and therefore you must go to them who sell and buy for yourself, or like the foolish virgins you will have to cry, “My lamp has gone out.” Even the consecrated lamps could not give light without oil; though they shone in the tabernacle, they needed to be fed; though no rough winds blew upon them, they required to be trimmed, and your need is just as great. Under the most happy circumstances you cannot give light for another hour unless fresh oil of grace is given to you.
Not every kind of oil could be used in the Lord’s service; neither the petroleum that exudes so plentifully from the earth, nor the produce of fish, nor that extracted from nuts would be accepted; only one oil was selected, and that was the best olive oil. Pretended grace from natural goodness, fancied grace from priestly hands, or imaginary grace from outward ceremonies will never serve the true child of God; he knows that the Lord would not be pleased with rivers of such oil. He goes to the olive-press of Gethsemane and draws his supplies from Him who was crushed there. The oil of gospel grace is pure and free from sediment and dregs, and so the light that is fed by it is clear and bright. Our churches are the Savior’s golden candelabra, and if they are to be lights in this dark world, they must have plenty of holy oil. Let us pray for ourselves, our ministers, and our churches that they may never lack oil for the light. Truth, holiness, joy, knowledge, love—these are all beams of the sacred light; but we cannot send them out into the darkness unless in private we receive oil from God the Holy Spirit.

The Chiming Lady - Part 5
A Lockwood & Co. Fan Fiction
Other Parts: 1 2 3 4
Summary: The agents of Lockwood & Co. are invited to the Halloween-Party of a former client.
A/N: I originally wrote this for @ savelockwoodnco on instagram's filler episode theme. But I'm a month too late... anyways this takes place after 'The Empty Grave' but there are no major spoilers for it. Originally I wrote it in german, but I translated it for the internet with the help of DeepL.
Tag List: @ahead-fullofdreams
Warnings: Mentions of injuries, brief mentions of su***de and mu**er
The ascent of the tower was a steep spiral staircase, the steps of which were completely uneven. The bells started ringing again, but at a tolerable volume. In addition, I heard someone sobbing. This someone was running up the stairs, as it sounded to me as if they were running past me over and over again.
We reached the room directly under the bell. We would only get to the top floor of the tower, where the bell hung, by climbing another creaky wooden staircase. But for now we stayed here. Thick wooden beams ran along the ceiling and the pale moonlight shone through the thin slits in the floor above us.
George lit the room with a small petroleum lamp. A few spiders had taken up residence here - an unfavourable sign in this day and age.
"Before we go outside," Lockwood pointed to the wooden staircase, "Lucy, please listen and see if you can hear anything other than the bells."
The bells were becoming a constant background noise by now. I tried anyway. I closed my eyes and listened into the darkness.
First a heartbeat. A heart pounding wildly against the chest where it lay. I was overcome with fear. The panicked heartbeat was joined by matching rapid breathing and muffled sobs.
"Oh God, what have I done?" It was the same voice I heard from the lake. The nanny who killed Mr Pearson's brother. She paced wildly up and down the room before stopping abruptly. After a moment of silence - her sobs stopped, but her heartbeat remained wild - I heard a pen scratching across a piece of paper. Judging by the scratching, it was a felt-tip pen. She walked across the room again and lifted a plank. Then I no longer heard anything.
Before I even gave the others a chance to ask me about what I had heard, I went to the corner where the nanny had gone. I searched for loose floorboards and quickly found what I was looking for. There was a little note hidden in the floor.
But just as I was about to grab the note, the ghost of the nanny materialised in front of me and I fell back. She looked really awful. She was still wearing her uniform and her arms and legs were sticking out in unnatural directions. The white accents of her uniform were covered in blood.
Immediately Holly and Lockwood were at my side, fending her off with their rapiers as I tried to get to my feet. But with the loud ringing of the bells, the numbing pain in my ears returned.
Nevertheless, I crawled across the floor away from the ghost. Out of the corner of my eye, I could see Holly and Lockwood give the ghost a cut that made it disappear and the bells disappeared with it. I stayed on the floor for a moment before George appeared above me and offered me his hand. I refused and stood up on my own. My goal remained the same - the note.
This time the ghost didn't appear and I was able to read the note, which the others only noticed when it was in my hand. But it wasn't just a note. It was the nanny's suicide note that she had signed with Felicity Williams. But it was more than that. It was also a confession. She had killed the boy. Thrown him in the lake without realising he couldn't swim. She was ashamed of what she had done and harboured such deep remorse that she could find no other way out than death itself. The Pearson family had made her life hell, she wrote, and yet she had written down what she had done. But how much was the confession worth if the note would never have been discovered without us? The remorse and shame were strong enough to make her take her own life, but not to actually admit what she had done.
I explained to the others what I had found and they listened intently.
"If her confession can be found here, I can guess how she took her own life," George finally replied. The tower was high enough for that. "But is this the source?"
"There's one way to find out," Lockwood replied, opening a lighter in his hand. Immediately, I extended my arm in his direction to stop him.
"No." He stopped and tilted his head slightly to the side. "She didn't write that confession for us to burn." His expression darkened.
"Luce... This is not the time to be communicating with ghosts." But he didn't sense what I was feeling. Her remorse and her shame. Her despair that drove her to do this in the first place. Her story needed to be told, but I needed proof.
"Give me the silver net. I'll put the letter in there and we can assess whether it's actually the source." His shoulders relaxed and he put the lighter back in while he dug out the net. It was far too big for the small piece of paper. Reluctantly, I finally handed him the parcel so that he could put it in his rucksack.
We looked around tensely. The bell didn't ring and the ghost didn't turn up either. But could it really be that simple?
The answer came quickly when George turned to the door, but even after shaking it, it remained locked. It didn't even have a keyhole.
"Question answered. The note is not the source," he said. It made me angry that he only saw the letter as a simple piece of paper; this ghost as just one of many orders. But where this anger came from, I didn't know.
"Holly and George, you search more floorboards to see if they're loose and if there's anything hidden under them. Luce, you and I will go to the bell."
* * *
The creaking sound accompanied us as we climbed the old staircase with drawn rapiers. The room we entered was spacious and square, with round-arched openings on each side. Above us swung an imposing bell, so low that I could pass under it effortlessly, while Lockwood had to duck slightly.
I approached one of the openings and took a look outside. The bottom edge of the opening started at the level of my stomach. My first thought was that it was quite easy to climb onto the ledge and make the long descent in a short time. I shuddered at the thought, which was not my own. Nevertheless, the fear of heights remained.
"Everything looks so beautiful from up here," Lockwood said as he stepped up beside me, and he was right. The tower was high enough to overlook the forest and see the beginning of London, which was just a sea of lights.
But we weren't here to enjoy the view. I turned back into the room and for a split second I thought Lockwood was looking at me instead of the beautiful view.
"Okay, you know what to do," he finally replied. I didn't like the look on his face. He looked pained. I nodded and listened into the darkness.
First there was thunder. Behind my closed eyes, I saw flashes of light that I wasn't sure were really there. Pouring rain could be heard and between the thunderstorms I heard a person sobbing. She put her sturdy shoes on the edge of the opening and looked down.
Her fear gripped me and I couldn't move. It was as if I was her. Like I had to make this difficult decision. I don't want to. It can't end like this.
Another person climbed the bell tower. I heard the creaky stairs and just as Felicity was about to step back down from the ledge, the stranger stepped behind her.
"No, what are you doing? It was an accident. I've changed my mind. Please," she shouted and I joined in. The stranger pushed her and Felicity screamed as she fell. I was snapped out of my trance by her impact. I felt miserable. But more importantly, it wasn't suicide. She had changed her mind. Maybe it wasn't her who had hidden the letter, but her murderer.
But before I could share my discovery with Lockwood, Felicity's ghost appeared behind him. Fortunately, he noticed it by himself and we fended it off with our rapiers. We couldn't do this all night though - we had to find her source.
We, or at least I, needed a quiet place to think about where the source might be. It had to be up here. Or could it be down there? Had her body just been left there? No, the distance was too great, I thought.
"We need to find the source, Lockwood," I said as we swung our rapiers through the air.
"Any ideas?"
"No, I just know it wasn't suicide. She was pushed."
Felicity pushed us further and further back. When I tried to take one of the many steps backwards, I stepped into the void and tumbled down the stairs. But I picked myself up again.
In the meantime, George and Holly had pulled some wooden planks off the floor, but they hadn't found anything yet. 'Where are you Felicity?' I asked myself.
My gaze flitted around the room. Has that rusty metal ladder always been in this corner?
Lockwood came down the stairs. The colour in his face was also running through his sweat.
"We need a plan. Where could the source be?" He was out of breath and his otherwise perfect hairstyle was completely dishevelled. He had lost the headband with the horns somewhere. I kind of liked him a little more that way. I quickly told the others about my vision after they said that the door was still locked and there was nothing under the floorboards.
"Wait... The source must be up here somewhere. Otherwise the ghost wouldn't put so much emphasis on the tower. We've already taken everything apart down here. Where else could you hide a body?" George explained, looking at us expectantly. My eyes lingered on the ladder once more, but it was George who put the pieces of the puzzle together.
"Whoever killed the nanny could also have hidden the letter. This letter would have exposed the Pearsons as inhumane employers who were indirectly responsible for the death of their own child and four other employees because of the way they treated their employees. Killing the nanny and dismissing it as suicide was perfect. At the same time, the Pearsons made the death of their son look like an accident. However, hardly a dying word is said about the nanny, as if she had simply resigned and disappeared. No death certificate, nothing. So I'm assuming that her killer hid her death. The suicide was just another cover in case she was found. And where in this huge tower could you hide a body?" George pointed his finger upwards. "I'm sure there's plenty of room in the beams of the bell." A mischievous grin spread across his face.
"George Karim, you're a genius," Lockwood replied at the same time as I asked: "How do you know all this?"
"Thanks, I know and do you really think Lockwood is the only one who came prepared for this? I found my costume quickly and spent most of my shopping trip in the archives. I took a closer look at the house and the Pearsons," he grinned proudly.

5 Tips to Keep Your Dog Warm in the Winter
Tumblr media
Invest in doggy outerwear - sweaters, hoodies, jackets, vests, even shoes! There's a whole market of pet clothing nowadays. One of our favorite brands of K9 outerwear is Canada Pooch
Tumblr media
It's important to note that not every dog's coat may be enough to keep them warm in the winter - especially puppies, small or hairless breeds, elderly dogs, or those with health issues. Just like with people, pets' cold tolerance can vary based on their coat, body fat stores, activity level, and health. Pets with heart disease, kidney disease, or metabolic diseases like diabetes and Cushing's might also have a harder time regulating their body temperatures.
Tumblr media
Protect your dog's paws when it's snowing. Boots can help minimize contact with the ground and prevent snow and ice from getting lodged between their toes and causing frostbite. Like chapped lips, cracked paws can be annoying and painful, and built up snow and ice can irritate their sensitive skin between their toes.
Tumblr media
It might feel awkward at first for some dogs, so try to use positive reinforcement as they try to adjust to wearing their boots. Offer high-reward treats so they can learn to associate good things with their boots - when the boots are on, good things are going to happen! :)
youtube
Tumblr media
If boots still don't feel right for your dog, you can try applying paw balm or petroleum jelly-based products like Musher's Secret to keep your dog's paws safe and moisturized.
Tumblr media
Just always be sure to wipe down and clean your dog's paws thoroughly with with a warm cloth when they come back inside. Sometimes salt and anti-freeze are put on sidewalks and driveways, which can cause chemical burns on your pet's paw pads or gastrointestinal issues if they try to lick it off.
Limit their time outdoors. Winter walks aren't always so magical. Know your dog's limits and shorten their walks if needed. If you can, reserve walks for the warmest parts of the day.
Tumblr media
Signs to tell if your dog is too cold: - Shaking, shivering, or trembling - Hunched posture with tail-tucking - Slowing down or reluctant to walk/move - Lifting their paws off the ground - Whining or barking - Ears and nose feel very cold to the touch Even if you decide to leave your dog in the car while you run an errand, it can still be dangerous if they are left for too long without any heat support when its below 30 degrees F outside. While cars can trap blazing temperatures in the summer and open risk for heatstroke, they can also trap freezing temperatures in the winter and open risk for hypothermia. Perhaps try to sit in your car without a jacket and see how long you can bare waiting in there without the heater on.
Tumblr media
Provide choices! Give your dog more options for comfortable sleeping places with varying levels of bedding and blankets, in case they need to change their location for more or less warmth.
Tumblr media
Set up cozy, wet-proof areas outdoors with heating lamps and wind barriers. Make sure kennels and igloos/houses are well-insulated and have enough space for them to walk in, turn around, and comfortably lay in.
youtube
Unless you have a healthy conditioned sled dog, I would not recommend letting them spend the night outdoors in the snow, without proper shelter and heat support. Watch how cold it can get in a simple dog house:
youtube
Serve warm food and water. At minimum, aim to make sure whatever they consume is at room temperature - but preferably just above their body temperature (101-103 F) when it's especially cold. Warming their food will also bring out their aroma and make it more enticing for them to eat. If feeding kibble/dry or dehydrated, you can mix in some warm bone broth. If it's canned/wet food, avoid microwaving for too long, as this can make the food too hot and potentially deplete its nutrients. Instead, try warming up your dog's wet food with this technique:
As for home-cooked/fresh food, the Balance It Canine Plus supplement not only makes your dog's complete and balanced, but is actually formulated to withstand reheating/microwaving. Our personal favorite! Below is a tutorial on how to utilize the Balance It system:
youtube
When selecting ingredients for your dog's food in the winter, consider including "warming" foods according to TCVM food energetics. Examples of these would be meats like lamb, goat, or venison, and vegetables and starches like sweet potatoes and oats. Traditional Chinese medicine teaches that hot/warm food nourishes the body by bringing heat which improves circulation. To support this theory, some studies have found that food associated with heat consists of compounds that are on average lower in molecular weight, yet higher in protein and fat - which contribute to energy production, and magnesium and potassium - which contribute to blood pressure and nerve function.(https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2666154320300247) Here is a list of some hot/warm commercial pet food and treats: - SideBySide Pet "Warming" - Dr. Judy Morgan's Fire Element Diet - Pet Tao "Blaze" Freeze Dried Raw Formula - JustFoodForDogs Venison & Squash Recipe - JustFoodForDogs Lamb & Rice Recipe

Chapter 17: Murder on the Orient
The Orient Express, 4:30 am.
"Be still, Sabine."
"Will she be able to breathe?"
"Yes." Lucian did not look up, maintaining the steady pace of his handwriting. They sat in their four-bed sleeping car, the ornate brass lamps sustaining a warm glow on their faces. Though the train rattled like a horse-drawn reaper, the movement had become imperceptible after the first twelve hours on board. The window drapes were shut.
"How?" Placed on the top-bunk and not allowed to leave its boundaries, Sabine was skipping over the small, tanned-leather bag Allegra had packed for her. Her bed was cluttered with its contents. She had the weary pitch of a child that had been confined for too long. "Do they breathe differently?"
"Ask Raze." He drew a line beside 1896, adding three slanted marks beside the date.
She crawled to the side of her bed, peering over the side, her hair falling amok. "Raze, can she breathe?"
"Yes." Raze was grinding a bone between his teeth, working away at the last bits of marrow as if he wanted to savour every bite. "…and there are enough holes that she will not suffocate unless we leave her behind."
Prelude: An Underworld Fanfiction.

Correction: I may have to update petroleum lamps to brass lamps on this chapter. (Haven't found a reference to petroleum on the 1899 Orient express, so I think they may have been brass.)

we find beauty not in the thing itself but in the patterns of shadows, the lights and the darkness, that one thing against another creates. a phosphorescent jewel gives its glow and colour in the dark and loses its beauty in the light of day. were it not for shadows, there would be no beauty. why should this propensity to seek beauty in darkness be so strong only in Orientals? the west too has known a time when there was no electricity, gas, or petroleum, and yet so far as I know the west has never been disposed to delight in shadows. this is true of our household implements: we prefer colours compounded of darkness, they prefer the colours of sunlight. and of silver and copperware. we fill our gardens with dense plantings, they spread out a flat expanse of glass. but what produces such difference in taste? in opinion it is this: we Orientals tend to seek out satisfaction in whatever surroundings we happen to find ourselves, to content ourselves with things as they are and so darkness causes us no discontent, we resign ourselves to it as inevitable. if light is scarce, then light is scarce; we will immerse ourselves in the darkness and there discover its own particular beauty. But the progressive Westerner is determined always to better his lot. From candle to oil lamp, oil lamp to gaslight, gaslight to electric light—his quest for a brighter light never ceases, he spares no pains to eradicate even the minutest shadow.

Cancer Ridden Items to Avoid Having in or Around Your Home
Some products in your home may contain chemicals or other agents that could possibly increase your risk of getting certain types of cancer. To keep yourself and your family as healthy as possible, you should refrain from using any of the following products.
 Artificial Sweeteners
Artificial sweeteners were developed with the goal of offering healthier alternatives to sugar, but many of these products have been linked to cancer. Acesulfame K can increase the chance of developing tumors and may also cause pregnancy complications. Bladder cancer risks are thought to increase from the consumption of saccharine. Aspartame may cause skin cancer.
 Processed Meats
Meats that are treated with additives, preservatives and other harmful chemicals to make them last longer and enhance their taste should be avoided. Many studies have shown how these meats can lead to the development of colon cancer, stomach cancer and other potentially fatal cancers if they are consumed regularly. Examples of processed meats include hot dogs, bacon and lunch meats.
 Refined Carbohydrates
Foods that are made with processed grains known as refined carbohydrates can increase cancer risks. These foods include white bread, white pasta and white rice. Cookies, cakes and other sweet pastries are also usually made with refined carbohydrates. To avoid foods with these potentially harmful carbohydrates, you should consider eating more brown rice, oats and whole-grain pasta and bread.
 Products with Benzene
Benzene is a possible cancer-causing chemical that is found in cigarettes and car exhaust, but some household products have also been shown to contain benzene. Stove-top cleaners and other cleaning solutions that have benzene listed in their ingredients should be avoided. Benzene is additionally found in some paints, glues and dyes. Even certain skincare products contain benzene, and recalls have been issued for some of these products.
 PVC Shower Curtains
Even though the evidence linking PVC to cancer is inconclusive, you should still consider using shower curtains that don’t contain this synthetic polymer of plastic. PVC is made with a gas known as vinyl chloride, and this gas is also found in tobacco smoke. PVC can cause liver cancer along with brain cancer, lung cancer and leukemia.
 Insecticides
Pest-control products are usually safe to use occasionally, but overexposure to insecticides often increases cancer risks. Many insecticide sprays are made with organophosphate, organochlorine and carbamate, and frequent exposure to these chemicals could damage the central nervous system and cause different forms of cancer.
 Some Weed Killers
Glyphosate is a potentially cancer-causing chemical that is found in certain sprays that are formulated to kill weeds. The chemical may also cause cancer in animals along with additional health problems, such as fatty liver disease, pregnancy complications and birth defects. If your chosen weed killer contains glyphosate, you should only use it minimally.
 Certain Scented Candles
To reduce production costs, some scented candle makers have resorted to using petroleum, paraffin and potentially harmful perfumes to create their products. These agents cause scented candles to emit smoke that is similar to cigarette smoke or vehicle exhaust fumes, which may increase lung cancer risks.
 Products with Formaldehyde
Formaldehyde is a chemical that is sometimes used to make furniture and other wood products. Scientific research has shown a link between formaldehyde and cancer development. If any of your current furniture pieces or other wooden items contain formaldehyde, you should consider replacing these products or at least airing out your home and using an air conditioner or dehumidifier regularly to control humidity levels and formaldehyde exposure.
 UV Sunlamps
Sunlamps are often used by people who suffer from a seasonal depression disorder known as SAD, but some of these lamps emit light that is similar to the sun’s cancer-causing rays. If you choose to use a sunlamp, you should get one that doesn’t emit UV light and instead uses fluorescent light. However, if you believe that a sunlamp that emits less harmful UVB light would be the most beneficial for you, it’s best to talk to a health care professional first.
 Talcum Powder
Talcum powder is made to produce certain types of baby and adult powders, but using products with this powder regularly may cause a variety of cancers to form. Women who use talcum powder regularly are particularly susceptible to ovarian cancer. Evidence suggests that talcum powder can also be a contributing factor to lung cancer
You can make your home a safer place for everyone by eliminating or at least limiting the items that may cause cancer. There are many safer alternatives to some of the potentially cancer-causing products that you use, and switching to these items can help you live a longer life.

Understanding the Technology and Applications of High and Low Temperature Shock Test Chambers
Tumblr media
The High and Low Temperature Termal Shock Chamber is the main equipment of modern reliability laboratories, which simulates the changes in cold and hot environments for testing, and is used for cold and hot cycles of various materials and environmental stress tests under high and low temperature impacts. The physical changes and material properties of the product after the environmental test of thermal expansion are evaluated through the cold and thermal shock test. The testing products include cycling tests on materials such as lithium batteries, metals, rubber, and rapidly changing electronics, to test the stability of the materials. From the perspective of LED product quality, whether it is indoor or outdoor, the environmental climate of LED depends to a certain extent on the LED utilization rate. The high and low temperature impact test chamber environmental testing equipment can simulate the rapidly changing climate of high and low temperatures in the natural environment. The LED experimental product has been tested under natural environmental simulation, which is undoubtedly an important means to improve the product. Why should LED lighting be tested using a High and Low Temperature Termal Shock Chamber? 1. The plastic shell of LED lamps is prone to embrittlement and damage under high and low temperature environmental impact; 2. LED tubes burn out when the temperature changes sharply; 3. LED circuit board chips are prone to short circuits in high and low temperature impact environments. During the high and low temperature impact test process of qualified LED, after the high and high pressure test, the surface of the lamp cannot peel off paint, discolor, crack, material deformation, and other abnormal phenomena; After the impact test, there is no electrical leakage or abnormal gas phenomenon in the lamp. In the natural environment, temperature and humidity are two inseparable natural factors. Due to different geographical locations, the temperature and humidity effects generated in different regions also vary. The high and low temperature impact test chamber is used to confirm the adaptability of products to storage and transportation under temperature, humidity, climate, and environmental conditions. How to solve the static problem of the High and Low Temperature Termal Shock Chamber? 1. Suppress the occurrence of static electricity: The source of static electricity is friction and separation between objects, and it must be suppressed as much as possible. For example, in liquid pipeline transportation, dust air transportation, plastic extrusion and other operations, the method is to reduce the speed; In fact, this will affect operational efficiency, with a safe oil flow rate not exceeding 1m/s. The electrostatic charge or polarity varies depending on the substance. Therefore, the feasible measure is to avoid the use of insulating materials that are easy to be electrified and materials that are easy to generate static electricity in the cold and hot shock test chamber. 2. Promoting charge leakage: In disaster response, a simpler method is to ground and quickly dissipate charges through metal conductors. But in this way, if the charged body is guided, it is easy to eliminate it, while insulation materials such as plastics, chemical fibers, and petroleum have little effect due to the difficulty in moving the charge of the charged part! 3. Leakage charge of additional conductive substances in objects: including tires. In order to prevent hydrophilic oil in chemical fibers and plastics, metal powder and carbon black are added to the operator’s boots, chemical fibers, and plastics to prevent electrification. Increase the relative humidity in the air, form an absorbent layer on the surface of the object, enhance conductivity, and have almost no electricity at a humidity of over 80%. So, in areas where electricity may be charged, humidity can be increased by adjusting humidity devices and spraying water. But the problem is that people may feel uncomfortable or have adverse effects on equipment and products. High and Low Temperature Thermal Shock Chamber can be used in the temperature shock test and fast-changing temperature test in a wide range such as aviation, air space, electronic components and material research. HLST-500D has two separate chambers: high temperature chamber and low temperature chamber. HLST-500T has three separate chambers: high temperature chamber, low temperature chamber and test chamber.
