Today is National Crown Day 👑
I made this piece back in 2021 (crazy!) and I’m glad it has continued to aid in sparking conversation around TCA and the importance of Natural Hair in the workplace. (When used ethically-plz don’t see this save it and make a post- just share organically unless making a post of multiple pieces of art etc)
My original caption:
All beautiful, all you, all professional.
Studies show that black women with natural styles such as fros, locs, braids etc are perceived as less professional than their straight haired counterparts. Still ridiculous and I hope The Crown Act passes everywhere.
One shouldn't feel the need to straighten their hair for an interview or for every single important event.
Straight hair is fun and awesome but the keyword here is "need" versus a non biased preference.

Posted @withrepost • @vanessavandyke Earlier last month, I was given the opportunity to partner with @dove and @refinery29 to share my story of discrimination as a young girl in order to help influence the passing of @thecrownact on a Federal Level. Did you know that hair discrimination in the workplace as well as in schools is still legal nationally in 32 states? That means most of the United States still has not made The Crown Act officially a nationwide law that protects black women from experiencing natural hair discrimination. I am so glad I can make a stance and take part of influencing this law to pass in more states than what we are seeing now by using my story to help others. To view the full article go to https://www.refinery29.com/en-us/crown-act-hair-discrimination-united-states and sign the petition to help pass The Crown Act, your voice matters and will ultimately help make such a tremendous impact on how we as a society view natural hair in the workplace. 🤍 #thecrownact #dove #refinery29 #passthecrown #endnaturalhairdiscrimination #naturalhair #mynaturalhairisdope #afro #curlyhair https://www.instagram.com/p/CjbBaa9uOPE/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Posted @withrepost • @vanessavandyke Ok, I know I’m a little late to the party, BUT #happyworldafroday I wanted to make this post to not only show appreciation for my natural hair, but others as well. Of course, many of you know I was bullied in 7th grade for wearing my natural hair in school. My hair was called a cactus, squirrel, and many other hurtful words to describe my hair by students. I even faced expulsion in 7th grade for refusing to tame my hair. From then to now, I can see how far I’ve come with embracing my hair, whereas before I was so self-conscious about wearing my hair, and that my identity was basically destroyed after becoming aware that my hair was not acceptable in a school or work environment. I continue to raise awareness about natural hair discrimination, and learning to love your hair because it is crucial in order to combat the stigma of natural hair in the work environment, and how natural hair should be accepted in every environment, especially on a professional level. With that being said, never stop embracing those crowns you were given, Happy World Afro Day! 👑 @thecrownact @worldafroday #naturalhair #naturalhaircommunity #afrolove #naturalhairmovement #embraceyournaturalhair https://www.instagram.com/p/CijHaRbORAz/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

If you’re wondering, “what’s wrong with touching Black women’s hair?” We can tell you. EVERYTHING. You’re allowed to be curious, but not at the expense of invading our personal space. Seeing a natural hairstyle, does not give you permission to touch it. 📸: @loveaprilkae #Repost @thecrownact #thecrownact . The CROWN Act is a California law which prohibits discrimination based on hair style and hair texture by extending protection for both categories under the FEHA and the California Education Code. It is the first legislation passed at the state level in the United States to prohibit such discrimination (at California) https://www.instagram.com/p/CIUdVAKB4Tz/?igshid=1c57c272dxdf7

here's an update on a story i posted a few months back. this little girl has been through enough already. she was getting teased relentlessly by her classmates and one day they took it too far by putting gum in her hair, or something of the sort, that made her parents have to go get her hair cut. she goes back to school the next day with much shorter hair. she was still getting teased so she asked her teacher to cut her hair again.....and the teacher did it. this little 6 year old girl went home practically bald and her father was shocked! this story was all over the news. i'm sorry but as a teacher, they should've addressed the bullying, not her hair. she didn't even ask or tell her parents. i think they wanted the teacher fired but as of a few months ago, nothing was done. now it's escalated to this. why can't they let this little girl live and leave her natural hair alone?!? what are your thoughts? is 1 million too much? how do you put a price on damage such as this? it happens way too much to children of color!! what would you do if this was your child??? 🙈😿😲 #repost via @mixxxedchicks #mixedgirlproblems #beautytuesday #donttouchmyhair #thecrownact https://www.instagram.com/p/CUF9hr3lbSZ/?utm_medium=tumblr
