It’s not even a matter of personal expression as much as it is a matter of identity. Our hair is a major part of our identity as people of African descent. Apart from the fact that our hair locs very easily when left alone, locs styles can be traced back to ancient African civilizations. So what we really need to talk about is the deeply rooted self-hate and anti-blackness that our society is built on. It’s the same reasons that skin bleaching is so popular in Jamaica. We also need not use words like neat & smooth when describing our hair as our is neither of those things naturally. The fact that the Crown Act even needs to exist is beyond me.
