Yu Yu Hakusho 30 Anniversary Project

According to Bandai, on January 8, 1994 (29 years ago), Younger Toguro 100% first appeared in the anime. To celebrate this moment, they are releasing 10 types of Toguro's muscle manipulation T-shirts. Younger Toguro is characterized by being able to freely control the amount of his muscle mass by 20%, 30%, and so on.

The pre-orders last until February 5, because that's when episode 66 of Toguro departing to Hell aired in 1994.

The T-shirts are available in 10 different designs, each featuring a different percentage of Younger Toguro, and a famous quote.

The lineup includes: the regular Toguro available in L size; 20% Toguro in 2L size; 30% Toguro in 3L size; 45% Toguro in 4L size; 60% Toguro in 5L size; 80% Toguro in 6L size; 100% Toguro in 7L size; 100% of 100% Toguro in 7L size; L size of strain beyond 100%; and L size of his departure to the underworld.

The sizes are funny. As the percentage goes up, the size of the T-shirt also goes up.

That's the famous Japanese professional wrestler Yusuke Okada (height 170 cm) wearing a 7L size.

And no, there's no Toguro 120% T-shirt. As I explained in this post, many fans mistranslated or misinterpreted his line. It was Urameshi Team, specially Yusuke, who gave 120% of themselves to protect their friends.

A memorable quote. When Sakyo offered Toguro a drink, so they could have a toast, he refused the alcoholic beverage and asked for an orange juice. In the anime, he says he prefers an orange juice or oolong tea.

Toguro 20%

2L size: Length approx. 74, Width approx. 56, Shoulder width approx. 50, Sleeve length approx. 23 cm

Contrary to Genkai who could use her reiki in many ways, or other youkai who have special techniques, Toguro could only use his demon energy to manipulate his physical strength.

That was the beginning of the final match between Yusuke and Toguro in the Dark Tournament. The day before, Genkai was killed by Toguro. Yusuke was so angry, he punched him with all his strength.

Pros to Live-Action Yu Yu Hakusho:

some truly awesome fights

Haven’t seen an actor capture a cartoon character in live action like the guy who does Yusuke since Mickey Rourke as Marv in Sin City

Con to Live-Action Yu Yu Hakusho:

Condensing everything from the beginning to the Demon Tournament arc (like 70 anime episodes) into five 50 minute episodes

#like toguro as a heavy is kind of diminished here simply because he was a fucking MENACE watching the anime as a teen #like bro fought yusuke and almost killed him bragging that he’s using like 5% of his power #then yusuke thinks he’s killed him when in reality toguro threw the fight to scam some rich people #so like he shows up on yusuke’s doorstep like ‘hey nice try i actually had to break a sweat get stronger and fight me in this tournament’ #‘and if you don’t fight me in this tournament i’ll kill your family and friends but really i just want a challenge’ #and then only after like another 20 episodes you finally see toguro at 100% and because it was built up his threat felt immense #and you don’t get that in like two and a half episodes

So I got round to watching the live action Yu Yu Hakusho and I LOVED IT?????

I was very nervous about a live action adaption (as I think most anime/manga fans are whenever they hear the words) but genuinely, this team put so much love and time into this and it really shows, they really did the manga justice and IM SO HAPPY

Gonna put some of my thoughts under the cut so feel free to skip past if you haven't watched it yet!

I loved the little nod to Smile Bomb on the radio in the first episode, it made me so happy!!

Why is Botan wearing platform boots, I don't get it but I kinda love it

Everyone was perfectly cast. Like the entire cast fucking ate and left zero crumbs

The Toguro brothers when they first showed up looked really goofy and I couldn't get over it for a while

I really liked how they took different elements from different arcs and managed to put them together so nicely into a story!!! Like whenever something happened I was like OH THATS WHAT HAPPENS IN THAT ARC

Even in live action, Kuwabara is still my boi

HIEI'S DRAGON OF THE DARKNESS FLAME WAS FUCKING INCREDIBLE I WAS SCREAMING THE WHOLE TIME

And YOUKO KURAMA????? HE LOOKED SO GOOD????

Honestly everyone looked brilliant and seeing how the live action did costumes and stuff is super helpful for me, a cosplayer with YYH cosplans 😂

I liked how Keiko was incorporated more into the rescue plot too and her friendship with Yukina was so sweet!!!

And Toguro at 100 percent looked FUCKING INCREDIBLE I'm kinda glad they didn't do the shoulder pad things cause I think it would have looked too strange but MY GOD THEY PULLED IT OFF SO WELL

okay so some more thoughts and initial impressions about the live action:

first of all i want to say overall i enjoyed it but this is absolutely a treat for fans and not something i would recommend for someone with no prior knowledge of the series. and it obviously suffers a lot from the limited amount of episodes. i don't know if it was a netflix decision or what, but an 8-10 episode season would've definitely taken this from "fun trip down memory lane" to "actual good series that can stand on its own".

however! the writers did a very very good job condensing the story into one arc that generally flowed together well. i would say the only time the pacing feels truly awkward is the genkai training, but with only 5 episodes there's just nothing else they could've done about that.

some changes that are really really good and work arguably better than the original:

hiei's intro being re-written so that his motivations and character make sense from the jump. i especially love the fight scene with yusuke where he refuses to even draw his sword because yusuke is too weak to bother with

KEIKO IS A REAL CHARACTER! she was a girl trapped in a shounen manga and now she gets to be a character in an ensemble cast and treated with some actual care. looping her into the yukina rescue was fantastic. she feels like a Final Girl and i love that for her

the whole cast was really good despite my reservations seeing the screenshots. kuwabara steals the show imo but the actor who plays yusuke is great. that IS my grumpy son. kurama is appropriately weird and i love the actor doing this stiff walk like he's in a body he's not 100% used to yet. hiei's hair is terrible but he's doing great. just the right level of disdain for everyone around him

SAKYO. alright listen. i love that sakyo's gambling is borderline a superpower for him. when he does the russian roulette gamble with only one empty chamber oh boy this guy is BONKERS!!

the fight scenes were all done really well. and especially with yusuke the way he thinks on his feet during a fight and using his environment was reflected well

downsides: obviously the genkai arc....its such a good arc with a powerful message and i wish it got the time and space it needed. ummm also i know everything was rushed BUT i wish they had that moment in the toguro fight where keiko has a meltdown especially in the LA watching kuwabara "die" in front of her knowing she is about to be next. it's just such a powerful moment in the show imo where she's watching this brutality unfold as yusuke is getting beaten and her mind is on a loop like "i was just scolding him about homework last week we're supposed to be in school we're supposed to be KIDS" i know why they didn't but still. still.

i really wish we got more moments with the characters hanging out or chatting or something. also adult koenma with the binky.....tbh either have koenma played by an actual kid OR just have him as an adult and drop the binky have him chewing on a lolipop or something idc but like. if we're not doing the baby bit there's no reason to have it they could have just dropped it. ALSO this is nitpicky but kuwabara's spirit sword not being yellow.....yes i was bothered by this. :((( i'd give this like a 8/10 overall tho, very very fun.

So like. Thoughts on the yyh live action (spoilers but like. That's obvious)

Tbh. The pacing was kinda rushed and I didn't like the wigs. But aside from that, it was a very enjoyable experience

Would I recommend it to someone who hasn't seen the original? Lmao absolutely not. I feel like this was an adaptation made for the people who were already fans. Certain characters (one of whom was simultaneously my bisexual awakening and my transgender awakening) were less focused on, which would make their impactful moments less,,,, impactful for a new viewer

I feel the biggest issue is that there are so few episodes that they couldn't get a whole series' worth of familiarity with the characters. Kurama's and hiei's big powerups happened in season two, and that's what made those moments so cool. By that point, we were already familiar with the characters (and thousands of filipino youth, myself included, had become bisexual because of dennis), so we got excited when these characters we already loved got cool powerups

All that said, the way they chose to compress the story was very cool. I really don't have much to say, aside from that. It was just really fun to watch all these familiar elements get put together in a new and exciting way. Even as someone who's been a fan since I was young, I was still caught off-guard by the changes and still found myself on the edge of my seat

And on that topic, the emotional moments really hit hard, and are really good at showing the depth of the characters, even within 5 episodes. When yusuke bad to fight his schoolmate, he was trying to get the demon insects out of him until the very end. When kuwabara finally broke the rock, it was because he wanted to be able to defend the people he cares about. The way yusuke and kurama had that common theme of dying and leaving their mothers to grieve (and it never gets brought up again!!! But we appreciate it nevertheless 😌). Parallel of yusuke and toguro had me tearing up tbh

And let me just say, I SCREAMED when hiei showed yukina his necklace. I've been waiting for this moment since I was GRADE THREE GODDAMNIT

And also, as much as I hated the wigs, I really liked what they did with yusuke's and kurama's costumes. The change to yusuke's costume was small -- they really just had him wear his uniform top open, rather than closed -- but it gave him a more 'casual' appearance. He really did look the part of a highschool delinquent, someone who doesn't care about rules or customs (like wearing your uniform properly). And as for kurama's costume, I loved that they used a fabric with a flower brocade for (what seems to be) his designated outfit for demon business. They really went for the flower motif, and I 100% support. However I would have appreciated if they spent a little bit more of the costuming budget on getting my boy a good wig

I also liked what they did with keiko's character. In the original she was just kinda a love interest, which. I mean. Fuck me for expecting a personality from a woman in a 90s anime. But here, there's some rough edges to her that made me think, right, she's yusuke's childhood friend

Another thing I liked is how they did the fight scenes. Here's the thing, a good chunk of the cast are teenagers. And they have to face off against various yokai. Yokai who happen to be much stronger than them. Even considering their shooty slashy boom boom magic, they have to really strategize how they're gonna attack. I really love how they had the characters really make use of their surroundings. Vehicles!! Metal doors!! It was so cool!!

Finally. Effects pretty 💛 there were some gay moments which I super appreciated 💛 but they should've brought a child in to play koenma

I have long been one to (only half jokingly) complain of a kind of ""gentrification"" effect in hentai and fanservice heavy manga and just general smut peddling circles of the internet, where some obscure fetish becomes kind of passingly popular, but then rather than see the appeal points integrated into the broader accepted definitions of attractiveness, the mainstream image of sexyiness(I dont even like calling it a "beauty standard" because it feels, like, a step removed from that... Some kind allegory of the cave bullshit but for anime waifus and porn... A pale shadow of a fetish) just sort of half heartedly dresses itself up as a malformed knockoff version of whatever the character type is: some grotesque libidinous homunculus. Until there's more, or indeed only, knockoffs and none of the real thing left.

Anyway point being that in the context of that I have the most upsetting conflict of interest where the boom of AI smut flooding Japanese artfocused socialmedia sites like pixiv are slowly but surely starting to figure out some of the prevailing trends of those subtle niche interrst groups. And while I loathe the AI art thing both in terms of artistic integrity, ethical consumerism, just the generally ugly, flat and same-y aesthetic, AND the fact that now browsing tags means wading through pages and pages of AI generated lowest common denominator waste of space in most categories... Some of the niche content is starting to look like it could actually have a positive effect on some of these weird little corners of the porn-o-sphere???

Like... At first it was funny and easy to dismiss because stuff like, I dunno, AI "muscle girls" was just churning out laughable 200Xs deviantart garbage. (You know the type, the physiologically impossible vascularity and redundant anatomy of like 100% power demon Toguro with a How to Draw Anime girl face slapped on it, but then add the patented AI color job.) Or the stock and standard twig thin animu waif build but slap some abs and no other definition on it, often too many abs even.

But now I'm starting to see stuff that --while it may not be aesthetically passable on its own-- is starting to actually nail the general mix and match of features: actual muscular definition, proportional builds and a (slight) variety of body types, and not cinched waists and stapled on waterballoon tits, etc... That it seems.to be drawing from non fetish specific sources, rather than simulating the usual inbred decay of the creative genes of those tiny insular subcultures.

What I mean is that while subjects being serviced by a large and broad body of artists can be expected to gradually innovate, and AI can be expected to only drag down the average... Some of these more specific subjects are actually serviced by so small a body of artists that the blandly middle of the road quality of AI art actually raises the average ever so slightly, and more quickly than the normal occurance rate of artistic skill and dedication otherwise overlaps with the interest group.

So now they're actually starting to shift the balance of content entirely. It's not that they're making more knockoffs of good art than there is good art (they aren't), but they're making knockoffs of the good stuff at a rate increasingly more comparable to the rate of actual mainstream low quality fetish stuff. Like.... I don't know how else to describe it but it's like, if young up and coming fetishists had to start looking to AI and human art indiscriminately to figure out what they wanted to draw and how... This would on average produce better results than aforementioned weird 200Xs era smut subculture niche stuff did? Does that make sense?

On the one hand it feels like counterintuitively a step in some kind of a right direction. But also of course this is a step that should be being taken by real artists

(Also I hope everyone knows what I mean when I start taking shots at turn of the millennium da stuff as a benchmark. I want to reference the jandrewedits startrek videos and Data's whole bad art saga, but I feel like thats almost equally lost to time now...)

who wants to tackle my annual foray into The Sacrifices Arc with me?!

The Sacrifices Arc (first book: Saving Connor) is a complete rewrite of the harry potter series written by Lightning on the Wave between 2005-2007, 3 million+ words, where Harry's brother Connor is the boy who lived, and Harry is trained by Lily to be his protector (not a spoiler). erase anything you remember about jkr's canon because you don't need it, in fact, people who have never read/seen harry potter have read and loved it!!!!!

Began reading it in 2012 and haven't picked up an OG harry potter book since, shaped who i am today, helped me grow from my trauma and taught me coping skills I still rely on, generally a really great (if long and often stubborn) story about the many different types of love (not all positive) that can bloom on a battlefield.

Happy to share content warnings to the best of my ability, it is deffo dark. And not a suitable "target audience" replacement for harry potter but i don't think anyone is interested in that anyway.

if you're interested in a story with incredible worldbuilding, magic system, magic lore (there is an autistic character who just studies and talks about different magical theories for chapters at a time), long and inconclusive deep dives into morality and ethics, epic fights scenes, like younger toguro using 60-100% of his power level fights, lesbians!!!!! (the author is a lesbian!!!!!), characters you hate to love & love to hate, subversion of sooo many of the hateful tropes jkr uses, series-spanning exploration of what equity means and looks like in theory and in execution, and also is just an epic slowburn gay love story. and did i mention, a truly ensemble cast (literally, the later books are split between 20+ perspectives but it only enhances it & the author has a nonspoilery character guide on her livejournal).

finally, a slight spoiler, but maybe the only thing that will catch tumblr's eye: Dobby becomes a DILF. I am 100% serious.
